That's insane, the equivalent of 3 out of 4 people on the entire planet having purchased a PlayStation game. I know that's not literally the case, but it makes it easier to digest than just saying "6 billion".

Got a PS1 in 1997 when I was 7/8yo with Casper The Friendly Ghost and Mortal Kombat (weird mix I know), I've dabbled in Nintendo and Xbox products over the years and still do, but PlayStation has always been my mainstay where I owned every system and thoroughly enjoyed every one.

100% deserved for the years of entertainment Sony have brought me.

just_looken450d ago

sony in the old days always pushed the consoles forward they had everything first but integrated graphics card gamecube had that first.

Thanks to sony we got ar / vr / dvd / bluray the motion tech first actual dvr systems back on ps3 kits from 2004/5 never mass sold though outside eu.

Sony was on of the pioneers of tech to bad they are a shell of those times making ps5's a phone here and there then movies. There tv brand is not even made in house anymore :( those were awesome before.

Playstaion was a great brand new tech safe closed off online gameplay i loved playing online on playstation way less cheaters more competitive.

Now its all gone cross platform live service games full of cheaters with sony buying bungie to launch live service games :( so dam sad.

SurgicalMenace450d ago

A shell, huh? Sad? What's been sacrificed with Sony's desire to get into live service gaming? How is this decision any different than them venturing into games, movies, or music? Cross play was demanded by their audience. Did you overlook that detail? We are still using DVDs, CDs, and Blu Ray now, so what else needs to be pioneered? Are you included within the inner workings of their R&D department? Seems like you just wanted to say anything contrary to the article and the above comment.

Lastly, they've got cutting-edge TVs, sound systems, one of the best phones to date, a console leading the charge, quality shows, and VR2 in just over a week. I guess there's no pleasing some people.

Here comes the sony blindboys

I was just at walmart got a sony cd player and my nsync cds har har

https://www.theverge.com/20...

I never said there phone is crap i said was they are not making as much there cameras have been in every iphone for years.

All they have is one smart phone that is it were as other compaines in the space have 3-5 models then tablets and other devices.

https://pocketnow.com/does-...

Also who the heck has a disc player of any kind in recent years? both Microsoft and sony are again pushing disc free systems because like it or not digital is the future.

stranger things was viewed for 7.2 billion minutes between May 30 and June 5
https://variety.com/2022/tv...

Not on a blu ray

And again sony has not made a new version of there blu ray player.

What i said was fact crossplay killed online gaming do to pc and xbox players increasing the number of cheaters and adding latency. The live service approaching to gaming i mean really what sony is going to rub you first before they milk you?

Every live service game has either become a money maker machine or failed in a year.

Quality shows what are those also? peter parker sing along? because i have not seen a sony streaming app making streaming shows nor any sony tv show this year.

And psvr 2 just wow you do realize that is a nice product for sleet users after they tossed out the last system without adding backwards compatibility. In its current state vr has select good titles but as whoie is just like the wii motes/kinect systems its a fad yes its cool but not practical right now.

The amount of room you need cost of equipment only certain games and or certain section of a game and you do not know if it will make you sick until you try it.

But hey go spend 10grand on sony stuff like those that eat at $5 mcdonalds board but buy everything apple new each year then complain about being poor.

CornholioX449d ago (Edited 449d ago )

In the old days, internet wasn't a thing, so consoles didn't need internet yet.

VR is very nice game experience i would definitely buy PSVR2. DVD/bluray has become of the past and will die slowly. I still like physical disk than digital and one day, it will be all digital. Nothing wrong with it. The only thing they have to do is bring more demos so people know if they like the game or not. Still very important when it's only digital.

About cheaters, well i blame free-to-play games or games becomes free later, that's the problem. Some big titles like COD Warzone should never be free and they can cheat if they want it. Crossplay is still nice but against other consoles, not pc imo.

You just hate changes and you live too much in the past.

SurgicalMenace449d ago

I do spend at least 5k on my Tvs/sound systems, but I cook and eat top shelf as well. I'm not sure what 41 year olds you know that eat horribly to own Apple products, but that's not an environment that I would choose to frequent. You shouldn't assume that everyone's finances are limited, though some may be. Porsche, Ferrari, Rolls, and Bentley all have been doing well in spite of all the recession talk. That's because there are some who are dedicated to living in comfort for a lifetime by making great financial decisions in life.

Concerning the other stuff, those are your opinions of which you deem as facts because YOU believe them. My parents, for example, are wealthy boomers who have little knowledge of streaming, downloads, or otherwise, so they make up a large sector of people still using all the above-mentioned mediums. People like them control a good majority of the world's wealth, but I'm sure none of them came to your mind before speaking.

Sony is a billion dollar company that's sustained through many global hardships, I'm more than sure that their decision-making eclipses any opinion of them that you may have. Last of Us is their most recent production, show wise, and it's on HBO if you'd like to check it out. Concerning streaming music, Apple signed a multi year deal with major labels, including Sony, to provide content to their platform. Own the license to the media and let someone else deal with the devices/services. Sounds like a smart plan to me, but I guess you know better, huh? There is no need for a new Blu Ray player when they hold the top spot in 2023 still, with the rights to the tech in hand as well. Making money from competitors must be another poor business decision as well, huh? Live service has a sizable market. Destiny, Fortnite, and FF14 come to mind, and all being greatly successful. Let me guess, bad business again buying Bungie to lead the charge? I digress, sir. Your views are paramount in your world, so I'll leave you to it. Good day.

I wonder if this argument will get brought up with Sony crying foul over the MS Activision/Blizzard deal.

S2Killinit450d ago

MS will say anything at all those scummy suits.

Welshy450d ago (Edited 450d ago )

They're different issues with lots of caveats to be cleared up to make it relevant.

Both things can be true. Sony can be successful and also be harmed by major acquisitions made by rivals at the same time.

Even a lawyer would have a hard time strategically wording "they have been successful up til now, therefore they'll continue to be successful regardless of rival businesses" with any real believability. Sony could easily counter by saying they'd never have reached that level of success if 1 rival company was allowed to just amalgamate all the major publishers and starve everyone else to death.

343_Guilty_Spark450d ago

Complete domination, market leader. They don’t need Activision.

Aloymetal450d ago

Of course they don't. The PlayStation brand was already GLOBALLY huge way before call of doody.

gold_drake450d ago

ah, shush will ya.

theres always one of those, i swear

lodossrage450d ago

What does their market position have to do with them needing Activision or not? They aren't the ones trying to buyout Activision. One of the most powerful companies in the world is.

And before you say Xbox's position, Xbox is in the position they're in because of their own incompetence and messing up their own franchises.

Wow what a milestone. And that just new games sold, probably a ton more used sales. Here’s to another three decades of good memories.

Solitariussaint450d ago

Woah, incredible!

PlayStation Always has the Best Games!

The people who took that pic of the consoles should straighten up those PSlogos on that PS2 and PS3!

Let me guess (without reading the article) the "questionable aesthetic choices" is the main character being too attractive. Did I get it right?

Helldivers 2 Reportedly Surpasses PlayStation in PC Popularity

Helldivers 2 now boasts twice as many PC players as PS5, emphasizing PC gaming’s increasing appeal.

PrinceOfAnger6h ago

Steam all-time peak 458,709 players

Tacoboto4h ago

I mean, it was available on Steam in far many more regions than PS is so it maths out there alone.

HankHill3h ago

You should be happy that Sony is making even more money off this game.

PrinceOfAnger2h ago

I don't think he is happy about this.

Eonjay1h ago

He is right. Mat from NPD already stated that the PS5 version BY ITSELF would have been the best selling game of the year. Its also the best selling PS5 game of the year as well. The game would have been a success regardless but Sony made the wise decision to put this on PC as well. This means that Helldivers 2 has sold more that twice as much as number 2 (MW3) in America. Its an unmitigated success on every platform it touches.

Cockney5h ago

It won't be long till we have official figures, not even sure why I'm here

Eonjay1h ago

FYI. That data point will be shared come within the next 6 days. There earnings report goes out 5/14/2024. The always post their software sales. Expect to see an astronomical YoY jump in that area.

SimpleDad4h ago

More mature people are on PC with disposable income.
Also people can enjoy the game without ps plus sub.
Game is good!

OhReginald3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

People are failing to realize that Sony sold the game on steam for all countries. PS5 consoles and PSN is not available worldwide. Also Sony delisted the game from 170+ regions a few months after launch. PS5 would be a lot higher if they made mandatory psn link for pc players as PC gamers are not down with more accounts linking like ubisoft and ea, AND the amount of PC players that would be pretty much blocked if their region doesn't support PSN.
