Flight sim inside of a vr hmd... could be interesting. Would the game had to have been built to support VR for the in game cockpit view to look around when you move your head?

ApocalypseShadow583d ago (Edited 583d ago )

It's not VR. It flat games on a screen in VR.

This was probably a deal since Facebook is encroaching on their territory of business. Putting their windows software and xcloud on Quest Pro using Microsoft's controller is a concession.

Eventually, you might see VR cloud streaming as it's already done with things like shadow PC.

This is no different than Microsoft when they tried to push games on Xbox one in VR. Which wasn't VR. Just flat.

crazyCoconuts583d ago

I think the thing that's gonna keep VR from being streamable anytime soon is the bandwidth required and the sensitivity we have in VR to latency. 120FPS with a tiny bit of lag is virtually impossible to pull off over a WAN, especially with the ever increasing resolutions we're coming to expect.

WeAreLegion583d ago

It's incredible. Highly recommend.

crazyCoconuts583d ago

I think technically MS could map head movement to mouse input, but wouldn't work with controller input, which will probably be what you're limited to, given that the games are running on xbox and you couldn't use a keyboard with the headset on practically anyway. Sorry - long way of saying probably not.

"Quest users will be able to play Xbox Cloud Gaming's hundreds of Xbox console games on a projected 2D screen while in VR"

It's cinema mode read ffs

Eonjay583d ago

I feel like you could already do this. Or maybe it required PC link.

Imagine Forza in VR. That could if done right be a hell of a lot of fun.

WeAreLegion583d ago

There are several racing games with VR support now and it's one of the best genres for it. Forza would be a great addition though.

WeAreLegion583d ago

I know that. It was in the comments here, too. I'm saying Forza would be great in VR.

Brazz583d ago

It's not the case here, this is not "VR gaming", but yeah... Forza would look great in VR.

Star51583d ago

Sadly this is not VR gaming but similar to Netflix in VR. Useful if you want to game in a 3D living room on a 2D screen. Maybe heavy usage will prompt developers to offer VR upgrades on old games.

crazyCoconuts583d ago

True regarding Netflix in VR. Probably won't even take up the whole screen, but will be played on a virtual monitor.
Developers can't offer VR upgrades in the way you're saying though- Quest is like an android phone running an xbox streaming app similar to your phone. There's no path to VR from there unfortunately

spicelicka583d ago

They need to start putting actual VR games on Gamepass. Could get a share of the VR market as well.

FPS_D3TH583d ago

Would’ve been more interesting to have a partnership with someone that makes actual VR games instead

GamingSinceForever583d ago

Actually Meta just purchased 3 new VR studios.

To me the most important hardware is the battery. Doesn’t matter how powerful the chips are.

ABizzel11d 1h ago

Eh…. It’s a combination of multiple things.

The battery is hugely important as it allows you to have ideally 4 - 5 hour gaming sessions.

The more powerful the processor the more games developers can share to the handheld, nd of course the better said games perform.

From there display, software, and ergonomics matter, as a good display/software will allow games to be more vivid, run at variable fps 30/40/60 ideally, and good ergonomics means it’s comfortable to play for said 4 - 5 hours. Everything else is gravy at that point.

redrum066h ago

Of course it matters how powerful the chips are for it to be future proof. Don't you want to be able to play new games?

Neonridr5h ago

the Switch proves that you don't need the most cutting edge power out there to be successful.

RaiderNation5h ago

@Neonrdr that doesn't prove anything because only Nintendo could get away with that. Their games aren't the most complex/graphically ambitious and Nintendo fans don't care.

Vits5h ago

@Neonridr

If anything, the Switch proves the exact point "redrum06" was making. Yes, it might be successful, but it's definitely not future-proof. Just look at how many games and franchises completely skip the platform.

Marcus Fenix7h ago

There’s no way you’re getting that 40CU 16-core APU in a handheld. That’s too hot and power hungry for that. The highest end APU they’re suggesting is going to end up in gaming laptops that can cool a 100W chip.

Jingsing7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

I think these articles get things a little out of perspective, Steam Deck has sold around 3 million and Switch has sold 140 million. But if you are browsing certain parts internet you'd think the Steam Deck had sold over 100 million. If articles are going to continue to circulate like this and continue to put the Steam Deck in the same arena then I'm comfortable calling the device a flop.

Neonridr5h ago

Steam Deck, while considerably more popular due to it's lower barrier of entry, is still a niche device with the likes of the ROG Ally and others.

I own one and it's really nice to be able to play some games on the go or in bed, but it'll never fully compete with a system like the Switch.

Skuletor4h ago

Especially when they're not in the same price range, the Switch is considerably cheaper.

gold_drake3h ago

sure but theres still a limit to what u can put in there ha. power consumption would be the biggest hurdle. and cooling.
