20 Years Later – 'Halo: Combat Evolved' Remains High Up The Evolutionary Ladder

Halo: Combat Evolved pretty much kickstarted the Xbox age, with no sign of it or the Master Chief's universe coming to an end anytime soon.

Hands down the best launch game ever. Raised the bar massively.

Kurt Russell897d ago

Agreed, I would have never picked up an xbox had this not been on it. I played this at a friends house and was immediately hooked.

Think people forget the state of fps on consoles at the time.

FinalFantasyFanatic897d ago (Edited 897d ago )

Pretty much, it single handedly saved Xbox as a brand and was evolutionary for a shooting game of it's time, although I like the gameplay in Halo 2 better myself. I miss going to friends houses and connecting up half a dozen or less Xboxs and playing multi-player together.

The amount of times I've gone through this campaign; the ridiculous amount of hours I played couch mutiplayer with friends over the years in just Blood Gulch alone is insane.

I love this series. Far from a fan of 4, and haven't tried 5 to give a personal opinion. I can just go by what I hear. I'm just hoping Infinite ends up a great return to form.
Like what I'm seeing from the content released on it the last few months.

BenRC01897d ago

Yeah fingers crossed, halo died with bungie for me, hoping for epic campaign and the resources haven't gone into skins, dances and a live service.

FinalFantasyFanatic897d ago

Personally I like how the guns feel in Halo 4, and Reach was my favorite Halo game, I hope infinite is a return to form for the franchise.

MadLad897d ago

Reach is also my favorite. Halo 4 didn't feel bad. A lot of the foundation is there, mechanically. But I hated Promethean enemies and their weapons. Also the game seemed a little more straightforward, lacking as much of the open, vehicle based stretches seen in past games.

FinalFantasyFanatic896d ago

Yeah, I didn't really care for the Prometheans as enemies either, a small numbers of their weapons were kinda fun, but they're essentially re-skins of other guns (they didn't play uniquely to me compared to the Covenant or Human weapons). Gameplay-wise, Halo 2 was the peak for me, didn't care as much for the campaign or mechanical changes in Halo 3/4.

Meh, never understood the raving this game gets, tried it on Xbox, had much more fun multiplayer FPS on PC around the same time and even before this.

The Callisto Protocol has some gross ones as did the Doom, Dead Space, and Quake games.

cooperdnizzle465d ago (Edited 465d ago )

That had to be one of the worst list I have ever seen.. The flood from Halo makes the list? Left for dead? Terrible list… they didn’t even mention silent hill or Bloodborne. Obviously they haven’t played too many games.
