Far Cry 6 is Changing Up the Far Cry Formula Once Again - IGN

The Far Cry series has changed a lot over the 17 years since the original launched on PC in 2004. Not everything has been as drastic as Far Cry 2’s choice to abandon the genetically engineered man-monsters of the first, or the introduction of RPG-style skill trees in FC3, but almost every game has done its part to tweak things in some way or another. Far Cry 6 will certainly feel extremely familiar to longtime fans, but it also takes some big swings at shaking things up. It’s a combo that, based on my experience with the first few hours in a recent remote demo, mostly works really well – though I’m not entirely sold yet on some of its newer elements.

If there's anything Ubisoft is, it's formulaic.

I swear there is no other developer out there who has such fun concepts that they consistently manage to suck all the fun out of til you're left with a lifeless, soulless franchise.

I was playing Odyssey almost every night or two for about a good two months. 35 hours-ish.

Then I realized I wasn't accomplishing anything. It was fun but I was just stuck in the loop. Decided not to play it and that's that - haven't bothered to pick it back up since.

glennhkboy968d ago

You should play Origin. At least you would feel like you've accomplished something at the end. Odyssey is just a mix of game mechanics. It didn't add up to a cohesive game, like black flag & Origin.

SyntheticForm968d ago

The main differences between Origins and Odyssey aside from the apparent themes is the combat.

Odyssey really ramped up the combat and made it more fun, though I enjoyed Egypt far more than I did Greece. Both were beautiful in their own ways, however.

That was my first thought too lol. Ubisoft is pretty much done to me. They've had some great games over the years but they are hell-bent on releasing the same kind of game over and over with a new setting, era, PoV etc. I can't do it any more. They need a massive restructure IMO

dumahim968d ago

I'm absolutely done with Ubi.

The crap they're pulling in Assassin's Creed the last few games, plus Valhalla was a bugfest for me. I even left it for the end of my holiday new games to play (besides Cyberpunk) and by the time I was getting near the end, I had something like 130 hours into it. Holiday event bugged leading to upgrades not working. Wasn't fixed. They just let the event expire. Collectibles floating 20 feet in the air or otherwise unlootable. One side quest horribly broken. I get near the end, I was going to finish the game that day and I hit a progress breaking bug that's been there since launch. 130+ hours, get close to the end and done. I guess it took another month or so to fix it, but this was the last straw for me.

Watch Dogs Legion, possibly the most boring game I've ever played. I struggled to build up the energy to even fire up the game, and even then I could only play for about an hour. Eventually finished it and the main reason why it took so long to get to AC Valhalla.

Far Cry, it's a fun game, but I've done it so many times now and it's just the same thing over and over. Large map, gain exp and new skills, find the best weapons, take over forts and way too many damn collectibles I can't stop myself from going after. I haven't seen anything in 6 that feels all that drastically different from the same formula.

NoFanBoy968d ago

If they keep selling well they will never change like COD , FIFA etc.

EvertonFC968d ago

R.i.P ubi 😞 big fan myself but agree I havent bought a ubi game for ages now 😔 same formula different location rinse and repeat.

dumahim968d ago

Same. When was the first time it got changed up?

senorfartcushion968d ago

2 maybe? Maybe none at all. Primal was formulaic and that had mammoths in

Kados968d ago

2 was changed from 1, 3 was changed from 2, 6 will be the 3rd time they have changed the formula of Far Cry.

glennhkboy968d ago

@Kados 1 was not an Ubisoft game. That was developed & self-published by Crytek. Crytek sold the Far Cry right & game engine to Ubisoft.

senorfartcushion968d ago

Once again? IGN is really good at marketing aren’t they. They have even used Far Cry 3 as an example of them changing formula.

dumahim968d ago

What changed? Drug trips? An awesome antagonist that wasn't even the main baddie?

glennhkboy968d ago

I guess the change back to a pre-defined, voiced protagonist is the big change. For the past several years, Ubisoft has been using generic protagonists in their single player games; this led to a blank single-player experience. A return (change) back to a pre-defined protagonist hopefully means that the overall story & the side missions will be more focused & engaging.

Far Cry 3 actually was a big change in the formula (Far Cry 2 was very different) but they've changed barely anything since then (2012). It's amazing how little they improved or changed anything in the 9 years since 3. Jesus. At least Blood Dragon was great.

CaptainHenry916968d ago (Edited 968d ago )

I guess this and dyling light will be the only AAA third party game I get this fall. I'm gonna do a wait and see approach with everything else including Halo Infinite

leahcim968d ago

Once Again? Are you talking about the leap between Far Cry 1 to Far Cry 2?
Because the formula is exactly the same since FC 2, don´t get my wrong, I love the formula and I love the saga. I think its pretty difficult for them to make a bad Far Cry game because the existing formula is fun an proved trough the years. Now if you are gonna tell me that FC6 is in third person and on rails, that would be an authentic change. (a bad change).

Played and enjoyed Far Cry, Far Cry 3 and 4 campaigns .

-Foxtrot42d ago

4 wasn’t so bad

Pagan Min was pretty entertaining

Skuletor42d ago

Yeah, 4 was good, was hard choosing which Golden Dawn member to side with, when they were both pieces of sh!t.
I've beaten all the main entries except 2 and 6, ended up uninstalling 6 to download something else instead.

Profchaos42d ago

I'd love a far cry pack with the original PC game (not the half assed port on ps360) instincts, predator even a port of far cry 2 to modern consoles back when these games had their own identity and weren't far cry 3 cut and pastel

Demetrius42d ago

Still one of my most favorite franchises along with assassins creed

banger8842d ago (Edited 42d ago )

Same here, I don't know why these games get so much hate. I've thoroughly enjoyed every single one of them, with only a couple of exceptions. I wish they'd hurry up and announce Far Cry 7. The only thing I'm concerned about is the rumoured time limit.

Bethesda makes the most consistently stupid NPCs, like really bad... yet I still can't help but love playing their games. Guilty pleasure, I guess. *sigh* 😩

Flawlessmic266d ago

How did redfall not make the cut.

anast265d ago (Edited 265d ago )

Every Bethesda game and Every Halo game. This list needed to have Cyberpunk somewhere.
