Mother's fury over Nintendo Scrabble game that taught her son a string of vile swear words

A mother who bought a Scrabble game for her eight-year-old son's computer console to improve his vocabulary has told of her disgust after it produced a string of swearwords.

I have to agree with timesplitter, "bad" words don't hurt anybody. Bad thoughts and beliefs do however. Hitler and the KKK don't use "bad" words to cause harm, they use ignorant and hateful ideas to cause harm. Are you saying that profanity = hate/racism/discrimination? Does South Park cause harm cause they use "bad" words? No way.

Wow maybe that mother needs to take a look at the scrabble dictionary. Furthermore, the computer doesnt "choose" to put down these words, it searches the its own dictionary for word combinations for whats on the board and puts down what gives the best points, so yea, maybe parents should rethink, not in the sense that you might see these words but need to rethink about how scrabble is played.

Those are real words in dictionaries, but they really have no place in a game that's rated 3+.

If a 10 year old walks into a store and buys a dictionary I don't think it would be front page news, or news at all because it happens every day.

How often does a three year old walk into a bookstore and buy a dictionary? 3+ means a parent is potentially going to give their 3 year old child the game, and given that it's just scrabble, not necessarily provide enough supervision to notice a bad word. I don't know about you, but I didn't read dictionaries at 3, and if I did, it would have taken a really long time to get to f, t, s, etc. (Mind you, my mother also swore around me. It was never a big deal for my family, but for a family that does feel it's important...?) On the other hand, I played lots of silly reading and spelling related games like Reader Rabbit, Scrabble, and Wheel of Fortune.

Swear words, racist words... all those things should not be taught to a 3 year old. Nigger is a valid dictionary word, as is kike, but a three year old probably doesn't have the ability to really understand what they mean. They just don't have the context. I agree that a ten year old should be old enough, but this game wasn't rated 10+, and if you're going to include offensive words, I don't see why it shouldn't be acknowledged in the rating.

Those words aren't supposed to be in Scrabble anyway; the official Scrabble dictionary does not have any offensive words. Tit(s) and toke are the only ones from the article that actually are Scrabble words.

The article also makes it sound like all these words were played on a single game. If she's not lying, there is definitely something wrong with this game. Even if the presence of those words can be overlooked, the odds of all of those words being played on one game is ridiculously minute. Unless the computer were TRYING to pick dirty words, discovering all those words by chance would require at least a couple dozen full length games.
