Every Gaming Series That Died With PS3

From PSU: "Every Gaming Series That Died With PS3 – Over the years, many game franchises have come and gone. While we still have games like Ratchet & Clank and God of War gracing every new PlayStation console, we thought we’d take a look at some of the game series that ended with the PS3. Franchises like Prince of Persia won’t be making the list, as we’re not considering full remakes as an entry into the ongoing series. We also won’t be counting remasters or definitive editions. So while titles like Burnout Paradise Remastered released on the PS4, we’re still considering this series deceased."

I would soooo love to have a Motorstorm compilation seeing as we wont likely get a new entry (since Evolution is no more). Sony could get a 60fps remaster of the main games on one disc. That would be sweet. Same with the Resistance games.

Snookies121099d ago

Just thinking about a Motorstorm collection in 60 FPS at 4K resolution would be stunning. To this day, I still find myself wanting to play those games again every so often. They were just so damn fun.

TallDarknWavy1099d ago

The people who made Motorstorm made Dirt 5, as well as OnRush for PS4, they play basically the same.

bouzebbal1099d ago

Modnation Racers is a series I want to see again.

Omegasyde1099d ago

Motor storm PS3 was a system seller for me. Played the demo at a GameStop kiosk and was hooked

ravinash1099d ago

It was my go to game when I first got my PS3.

SlothLordPootus1099d ago

I played Pacific Rift at my friend's, and immediately wanted a PS3.

jukins1099d ago

Motorstorm blew my dads $3000 subwoofer out from the menu music.. lol he was pissed i was even more excited to play

CobraKai1099d ago

After seeing what Insomniac can do on PS5, I think I’d blow a gasket if they brought back Resistance.

Nineball21121099d ago

I LOVED the Resistance series. Awesome, cool, unique weapons... great story line... and the MP was also extremely fun.

If Resistance came back, I think I'd even buy a PS5 from a scalper to play it. LOL

ABizzel11099d ago (Edited 1099d ago )

This is one of the areas where I feel a GamePass like service would shine. It would give so many games that were good but didn't find a large audience or niche gems a second chance at life without the fear of pouring money into a dead franchise.

I'd love to have a Heavenly Sword 2, Warhawk 2 (not starhawk, but take a few things from it), Folklore 2, Tokyo Jungle 2, Puppeteer 2, Dead Space 4, Motorstorm 4, Resistance 4, SSX Tricky 2, OG Style Twisted Metal, Heavy Rain 2, Legend of Dragoon 2, Sleeping Dogs 2, PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale 2, ModNation Racers 2, Ther Order 2, Portal 3, Sly Cooper, Jak, inFamous, Vanquish 2, Metal Gear Rising 2, Ninja Gaiden 4, Shinobi (Side Scroller), Jade Empire 2, and so many others.

They need a PS+ Platinum, PS+ Gold, and regular PS+.

PS+: Keep it the same.
PS+ Gold: $10/mo, PS Pass (100 games + 10 new additions per month) Day 1 exclusives NOT HAPPENING
PS+ Platinum: $20/mo., PS Pass, includes PS video pass, Crunchyroll+Funimation, Tidal or Spotify.

Nineball21121099d ago

That's a really good point. Sony DOES need something like Game Pass, imo, for the reasons you listed.

SonyStyled1099d ago

You just explained what PS Now is as PS+ Gold. Have you heard of PS Now?

ABizzel11098d ago

@Sony

PS Now does not have PS+ included in it which would be the point of it being names "PS+" Gold.

Also, PS Now has lost the branding / PR battle even with PS fans as it last posted 2.2m subscribers this time last year, and people still ignorantly think it's a streaming-only service when only PS3 games need to be streamed. They need to drop the Now Name and rebrand it. PS Now has hundreds of games more than GamePass, but a better focus would be to try to make it a top 100 games of PS, that covers PS1 (10), PS2 (20), PS3 (10), PS4 (20), PS5 (10), PSP (10), PSV (10), and PSVR (10), that way it offers a significantly more streamlined, focused, and consistent content flow with your online included. Having a smaller pool to start with means less shovelware to dig through and allows them to focus each month on quality content releases which looks better, they could have anniversary months like a FF month with 10 FF games, or 10 MGS games, etc...

Finally, as I said PS+ Gold would primarily be a way to launch new A - AAA games that didn't really find a large enough audience to fund a sequel or was extremely niche. All the games I listed could have a second chance, as well as remastering many PS3 games with updated PS4 engines to support 1080p - 4K @ 60fps to make PS3 "backward compatibility" available on PS5 with a best-of version. PSNow's 3 - 5 million subscribers don't compare or bring enough funding that a 10m - 30m GamePass like subscription would, and we could be seeing the games I listed above launching on PS Pass consistently. That's $30 - $50 million per month gross on PS Now vs $100 - $300 million per month with PS Pass, considering GamePass is already in that range, which would easily allow 1 AAA and 2 or 3 A / AA games per month on PS Pass, compared to squeezing out 1 AAA every 2 months with PS Now and just 1 A / AA game per month. It also brings revenue in for acquisitions like Bluepoint games ect...

PS Now and a PS Pass are not the same.

I miss Army of Two. Great couch co-op.

bradfh1099d ago (Edited 1099d ago )

Bad Company 2 was a great game, too
not sure why Bad Company 3 never was made

Eidolon1099d ago

Just wasn't a good platform for lootboxes.

NecrumOddBoy1099d ago

Not a series but I wish Puppeteer would come to PS4/5.

FallenAngel19841099d ago

Sony doesn’t seem fond of their Japan Studios titles lately

1099d ago
Christopher1098d ago

So not fond of them that their last one was Demon's Souls on PS5? How many games are they supposed to put out a year to make people think Sony doesn't respect a studio?

Godmars2901099d ago

Title is a bit misleading. Indirectly implies many of them died with the PS3 when many were 3rd party and the PS3 wasn't their main platform.

Also, White Knight Chronicle was pretty much DOA cause the full game failed to live up to the promise of the initial trailer. Was more an effort at an MMO than anything.

SavageFlamingo1099d ago

Not really misleading when you look at the website. It’s a PlayStation website, so they’re going to write articles from the PlayStation perspective.

Silly gameAr1099d ago

You must not visit PSU much. They're actually a joke of a Playstation website, and write more click bait than a tabloid.

Army_of_Darkness1099d ago

Yeah bro, I feel that PSU takes more jabs at playstation than kotaku and polygon combined!? Just for click bait... Shame...

bondsmx1099d ago

It couldn’t die, because it was never “born”.
But the original trailers for “eight days” for the ps3 literally looked amazing for the time...

I remember being blown away by them. Too bad that game never happened.

vTuro241099d ago

Yeah the Eight Days trailer was quite the hype. The disappointment was real when it got cancelled.

Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell Of Ar Ciel Retro Review – Love Conquers All

Gary Green said: You’ll be forgiven if you haven’t heard of the Ar Tonelico trilogy. The previous two games arrived so late in the PS2’s life-cycle that they simply went unnoticed. While most were tinkering with their shiny new PS3s, Ar Tonelico: Melody of Elemia and Ar Tonelico II: Melody of Metafalica were being ‘returned to sender’ by your local Game stores. Luckily, you won’t need to have played them to understand and appreciate this third and final chapter, Qoga (pronounced k-yoga) tells the story of a racial war between humans and Reyvateils, a breed of biologically produced female cyborgs capable of reproduction, while still having a digital mind.

Oh my god. I kinda wish this would get a remaster on PS5, it would be awesome. One of my favorite games on PS3.

That and 3D Dot Game Heroes. It's a shame that some stuff is stuck on PS3.

Knightofelemia4d ago

Ar Tonelico 3 is good I still prefer the first AT game. The music is solid in all the games and Akiko Shikata is a very talented singer bringing life to the game. Only annoying part is well I find is Saki I always choose Finnel or Tyria. KOEI so needs to HD remaster the franchise along with Ar Nosurge and Ciel Nosurge since it never came to North America. I would day one the Ar Toneliceo games and Ar Nosurge if they were remastered.

TheColbertinator4d ago

I still have the limited edition of Qoga unopened. Unfortunately it never went up in value like I had hoped all these years.

Used to own all these quirky JRPG on ps3 good times. Wish I would have kept them all

Mugen Souls Retro Review – Sexy Demon Space Adventure

Gary Green said: We have a juxtaposition of 2D and 3D visuals, flashy turn-based combat, quirky anime characters with cheeky dialogue with plenty of partial nudity; Yes, this is a Compile Heart JRPG. Whilst the engine is borrowed from Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, Mugen Souls is more of a Disgaea spin-off. It’s not a strategy RPG as such, it merely sits within Disgaea’s ever-expanding universe (Multiverse? Netherverse? Your guess is as good as mine). You won’t find cameos though, since Mugen Souls is a franchise which aims to stand on its own two feet.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies5d ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken5d ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing696d ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker6d ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing696d ago (Edited 6d ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt5d ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken5d ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.
