Sean @ FG : The “story mode” of Jedi: Fallen Order improves accessibility but makes the game feel almost hollow.

Why does every game in existence need to be compared to the Soulsborne genre? Some people just like to enjoy games without intense difficulty.

olorin8181627d ago

the article referred to Souls-genre because of the unmistabable souls like mechanics in Fallen Order. The bonfire -meditatation ring,, combat, enemy respawn system. They've clearly drawn inspirations from the From SOFTWARE games. The author simply debates how it doesn't work for a game which allows for easy play mode.

CorndogBurglar1627d ago

They aren't. But it's very obvious this game takes a lot of inspiration from the Souls series and even Sekiro.

It has exploration where you can go in multiple directions from the get-go. But you may not be ready to go certain ways yet, until you get some powers and upgrades.

The combat is very similar to Sekiro in the sense that it heavily relies on the counter-attack system. It's fairly difficult on the harder settings.

It has meditation points similar to camp fires, where you can upgrade your character and refill your health.

If you die you have to go back and fight the enemy that killed you to get your experience back.

You can have the enemies you've already beaten respawn at meditation points.

I mean, it's pretty easy to see why its compared to Souls-like games.

PlayableGamez-1627d ago (Edited 1627d ago )

This game actually does use the soulsborne formula.
If you think games are difficult today, you should play games in the 90s and come back to me about difficulty.

Thunder_G0d_Bane1627d ago (Edited 1627d ago )

The souls like mechanics in this game are just horrendous it’s not suited to Star Wars.

I don’t know why this game chose to imitate dark souls when it could just be it’s own game. Enemies respawning at meditation spots is just dumb doesn’t fit the Star Wars theme.

KwietStorm_BLM1626d ago

How do enemy respawns clash with **the Star Wars theme?

**wtf is the Star Wars theme

Hungryalpaca1627d ago

Fallen Order is exactly like those games. That’s why.

ziggurcat1627d ago

"Why does every game in existence need to be compared to the Soulsborne genre?"

It doesn't, but the comparison is fair when this game has been influenced, in part, by the Soulsborne genre.

KwietStorm_BLM1626d ago

The comparison isn't about intense difficulty, it's about design elements, which you know..did you play the game?

D__RAiL1626d ago

not every game but only ones like this that are hugely inspired by Dark Souls

The combat needed more polish( tightness) and better design decisions. Not being able to interrupt a swing to block is their most egregious error; its a lightsaber not a claymore. Emphasises on light.

That would have made the combat flow.

CorndogBurglar1627d ago (Edited 1627d ago )

My only issue with combat is how they made some lightsaber attacks use up you Force meter. And it took a LOT! I mean, a simple overhead swing should not cost 2/3 of your Force meter lol. It shouldn't take ANY of it. No Jedi is using the Force to swing a lightsaber downward lol.

Basically, I feel like the only lightsaber based attack that should require Force meter is the Lightsaber Throw.

It just made it to where I didn't use any special lightsaber attacks. I just parried and counter-attacked everything and saved my Force meter for Push, Pull, and Slow.

CaptainHenry9161627d ago (Edited 1627d ago )

Facts and push, pull, and slow uses a lot of the force meter as well imo

carcarias1627d ago

Yeah, I agree with you there.

Overhead swing was a very handy move but used soooo much bar. Ridiculous. I realise they didn't want us spamming it because it does a ton of damage but the amount of force it used, combined with having very little force regen in fights, needed adjusting I think.

Maybe it could have used stamina instead? Or perhaps had yet another bar? One for force powers and one for 'force saber', I don't know. It just didn't feel right.

carcarias1627d ago

Agree.

I found the last two boss fights really accentuated the lack of, as you say, 'tightness', around the combat. Playing on Grandmaster felt very difficult but not in an enagaging way. Things felt cheap and not as fair or balanced in the same way as Sekiro or Souls.

Imho, it was a combination of various niggles/mistakes that the FromSoft team wouldn't have made. Still felt pretty good most of the time, just needs fine tuning for the next game.

Articuno761626d ago

Little things like the sound design not being quite up to par become evident on higher difficulty levels. Like, in Sekiro I can have the camera jammed halfway up a boss's arse and still parry correctly because their general silhouette and sound cues let me know the parry timing.

In Fallen Order you can get hit by things off screen (that aren't projectiles) that you had no idea were happening.

CorndogBurglar1627d ago (Edited 1627d ago )

I'm not sure how having an easy mode makes the game feel hollow. I played through on Jedi Master and found it to be just the right difficulty for me.

But not everyone would like that. I'm all for games having only one difficulty set at hard, like Sekiro if that is the developers vision. But this being Star Wars it needed to be more accessible. I don't see a problem with that. If it's too easy for you and feels "hollow" just play on the harder difficulties.

Story mode is for people that love Star Wars and want to experience the new story, which is canon, but may not necessarily be experienced gamers. Or people who may not be familiar with the Sekiro/Souls style of play. So they can experience it without having a difficult time doing so.

Quit the complaining. If you're a gamer and have even a little experience playing 3rd person action games then Story Mode wasn't meant for you.

GamingSinceForever1627d ago

I played at Jedi Master until the last 2 bosses. I’m at the age now where I no longer have the patience for repeated ass kickings.

CorndogBurglar1626d ago (Edited 1626d ago )

Haha. That's fair. I'm going to take a break then try it on Grand Master. Once I got used to the Combat I pretty much ran through the game with no problems.

I did struggle a bit when I got to the new enemies on Dathomir. And I lost about 25 times or so against the end boss. But other than that it wasn't too bad.

I felt like it was fine, I actually enjoyed it and this is coming from someone who is a mega Soulsborne fan.

Before Miyazaki Retires, We Need To Get A Sekiro Sequel

A sequel to the studio's acclaimed title, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, would be the perfect swan song for long-time video game director Hidetaka Miyazaki.

H933d ago

Man you didn't have to do me like that with the title

LoveSpuds33d ago

I just don't see it happening given the success of Elden Ring. I think we'll be seeing a sequel to Elden Ring before anything else.

Demetrius33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

I'm not into souls games but it's good to see that this dev studio stick to what makes their titles unique, there's alot of souls copy n pasted games but they rarely get talked about cause they're looked at as copies and not original created ideas, the souls games are unique cause they offer they're own identity instead imitating I respect that

jznrpg33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

Or Bloodborne 2 preferably both but that’s a lot to ask if he plans on retiring sooner than later

Leeroyw33d ago

Bloodborne 2 or I'd simply love a 60fps remaster. I'd also love a bloodborne randomiser option.

toxic-inferno33d ago

I'm definitely holding out hope for a Bloodborne 60fps remaster still. Some extra features thrown in would be nice too.

With regards to a sequel, I'd actually rather From Software make another new IP with a different setting. That is what made Bloodborne so good - the fact that it took a proven formula and applied it to a completely new setting.

anast33d ago

The hype would be insane if they announced Bloodborne 2.

Inverno33d ago

What if they made a Sekiro/Bloodborne mix?

I regret i never played it, like many other great games!! Still on my radar, when i become retro gamer in a year or two with all this gaas crap happening around

Psychonaut8537d ago

Absolutely. Amazing art design, and didn’t have the Bloodborne problem so it runs at 60FPS on newer hardware, which is amazing given the reaction based gameplay

Cacabunga36d ago

Wait did it get a next gen patch??

Sciurus_vulgaris37d ago

This one title that never clicked with me. I enjoyed Dark Souls, Demon Souls and Bloodborne, but I never warmed up to Sekiro’s parry-focused combat. I honestly gave up on the game at about the half way point.

Armyofdarkness36d ago

Me too. But after the Stellar Blade demo and parrying like crazy I’m tempted to go back and play this again

Inverno36d ago

Took me a couple years too get into when I first bought it. I had gotten so used to Bloodborne that the gameplay was genuinely confusing me. Picked it up a third time and clicked. The game is souls stripped of all its RPG elements and left with nothing but it's combat. It's Souls at its pureness but I can see why the combat would turn people off. That's why I liked it so much tho, without the choice of weapons it's very focused on a specific style. I think a sequel with a small selection of weapons but each fleshed out would be the right step.

Sciurus_vulgaris36d ago

My problem with Sekiro was the combat, I didn’t find it as engaging as Bloodborne, DarkSouls due to the lack of RPG elements. I even found action games like Ninja Gaiden 1-2 and Ghost of Tsushima more engaging as well.

The 7 Best Souls-Like Games - Mastering the Challenge

The Souls-like genre remains popular, along with FromSoftware's classics there are many contenders. But which are the best Souls-like games?

toxic-inferno45d ago

Hmm... In my opinion, the 7 best are the 6 made by FromSoftware (DeS, DS1, DS2, DS3, BB and ER), then Lies of P. But each to their own.

kevco3345d ago

Still DS1? You don't feel it's been surpassed yet?

Demon's Souls has the remake of course, but DS1 has surely been outdated?

Smellsforfree44d ago

I think that the DS1 remake is better looking than DS2. The interior lighting matched with the low resolution textures in DS2 is very garish, IMO.

Besides graphics, what do you mean by DS1 being "outdated"? I'm someone who played through Elden Ring and just recently played through the DS series, and as far as gameplay went, there were all very similar.

Cacabunga44d ago

I haven’t played many but Bloodborne and NIOH1 are on top of my list.. had a blast with these 2

toxic-inferno44d ago

For world design and interconnectedness (that's a word, right?) DS1 is yet to be beaten.

anast12d ago

All great games beside DS2.

toxic-inferno12d ago

I would agree, but there are some things in DS2 that are great and incredibly memorable. It tries to do things differently, and there are some amazingly cinematic moments.

Of course, there's also poor level design (particularly the interconnectivity of the world), questionable combat choices and some of the worst boss runs since the early days of video games...

anast12d ago

True. I can't disagree the game has some moments.
