Why Digital Stores Haven't Improved Backwards Compatibility

Long gone are the days of backwards compatible discs, and the issues in playing old games have worsened as digital stores have become more common.

I wish I could download Resistance: FoM, Resistance 2, Killzone 2, Killzone 3, Motorstorm and Motorstorm Pacific Rift. Make it happen Sony!

"When the PlayStation 3 was released, there was no backward disc compatibility" Hmmm not sure what PS3 you own but every PS3 I own plays PS1 discs and the 20 gig and 60 gig PS3's had the PS2 built in and there was an 80 gig that used emulation to play PS2 games. Only way I buy a game that is backwards compatible online is if the game disc is not compatible and there are some games that the disc does not work on the Xbox so you have to go digital.

On top of that, all PS3's were BC with PS1 games through the entire generation, both on disc, and digital. Even the Vita had PS1 BC availability for digital games.

Reason digital stores haven't improved BC is because BC is a hardware feature, and to sell the hardware, they need to make it affordable, and to make it affordable, they decided to not put the hardware into the system.

Emulation is not BC, but it can serve as a partial BC solution, and this gen, it's the reason why a lot of publishers have gotten on board with BC on Xbox, because it gives them potential revenue to sell those old games with no real effort on their part.

True but what Sony offers for PS2 and PS1 backwards games on the store is a joke PS1 discs are better because its a bigger library I have a 60 gig I gotta fix to play PS2.

rainslacker1640d ago (Edited 1640d ago )

I dunno if I'd say their digital PS1 availability is a joke. Certainly not as big as the physical catalog, but it's quite hefty, and almost all the big games are on there.

PS2 though, yeah I agree 100% that it's pretty barren. Probably would have been better if they hadn't removed the PS2 BC early in the gen, because once they did, there wasn't much incentive for publishers to make digital versions of their games available, even with the available emulator, which didn't always work for all games.

I have lots of PS1 and PS2 discs though. But I have a pretty good selection of PS1 games as well. If i have it digital...usually through PS+ offerings, then I'll play it that way for convienance, but I have no problem popping in a disc for a game that I want to play.:)

The ps store needs a wishlist option. It’s on the mobile app. Why wouldn’t they put it on the PS4?

"When the PlayStation 3 was released, there was no backward disc compatibility and the Xbox 360 had the same stance."

Stopped reading there.

When the writer has to resort to writing fiction to get clicks I lose interest.

A Matter Of Trust: What The Game Industry Should Do To Win Gamers Back

Skewed and Reviewed have written an Opinion Piece covering issues in the gaming industry, how current issues were issues years ago, and what can be done to help restore consumer trust.

anast5d ago

Nothing. It's up to the gamers to stop consuming content from companies that they don't agree with.

Garethvk4d ago

How do you know if you agree with it or not unless you play it? Which without conventions forces gamers to rely on trailers. Perhaps Demos should be made more frequently. But companies need to do better as well.

anast4d ago

Wait until release. Watch Gameplay. Exercise patience.

Garethvk4d ago

But is that not what they have now? Tons of gameplay or are you talking about watching actual gamers play it versus the trailers and streams? The big issue is that some companies pay streamers and influencers and they create content but for me; that is hardly a fair, unbiased, and factual look at a game.

Get rid of the suits in the industry and job done!!

Garethvk4d ago

They usually are attached to the money sadly. It would be nice to have gamers in charge but you have so much money invested that business people are needed. Hence the issue; you need people who know business but are also gamers who know have an eye to the community. It sounds simple in theory that if you give gamers quality games that they want to play; money will be made. But that is not always so.
