Microsoft plans to make 825,000 consoles carbon neutral

The climate crisis is a massive problem that not only consumers, but large companies have to tackle. Today, Microsoft announced that it was going to take substantial steps to make its productions and operations more environmentally friendly. While the company has a number of initiatives it's going to push, it also plans to make 825,000 Xbox consoles carbon neutral.

Personally, I think the climate change scare is a scam, but you have got to get a kick out of the shameless cash-in that all of these companies are trying to promote as being 'carbon neutral'. At best, Microsoft will probably just purchase carbon credits from a carbon exchange (like a stock exchange, which has been promoted by Al Gore for many years), just for the purpose of virtue signaling.

It is a scam..

Associated Press Nov. 2, 1922..The Arctic Ocean is warming up, icebergs are growing scarcer, and in some places the seals are finding the water too hot. Reports from fishermen, seal hunters, and explorers all point to a radical change in climate conditions and hitherto unheard-of temperatures in the Arctic zone. Exploration expeditions report that scarcely any ice has been met as far north as 81 degrees 29 minutes. Within a few years it is predicted that due to the ice melt the sea will rise and make most coastal cities uninhabitable.”
It is..

“The longer the planners delay, the more difficult will they find it to cope with climate change once the results have become grim reality.” This is from an article in Newsweek on April 28, 1975, warning us of the dangers of global cooling.

In 2007, U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said, “If there’s no action before 2012, that’s too late. What we do in the next two to three years will determine our future. This is the defining moment.”

Or just listen to the Dr. Patrick Michaels, director of the Center for the Study of Science at the Cato Institute

Brave_Losers_Unite2088d ago

Yeah let's reference something from 1922. You know flat earth conspiracy clowns existed then with their "research" too.

But you know, let's not reference anything that is measurable like year over year global record breaking temperatures, sea rise, rapid ice melting, and CO2 in the atmosphere and its affects on temperature regulation. But no, let's listen to some fat guy who tweets out that climate change is a Chinese hoax.

It is from people like you that will be the cause of many deaths. Rather than listen to the overall consensus of environmental scientists who do all of the work you nitpick your research to support your own flawed thoughts.

Psychotica2088d ago (Edited 2088d ago )

@Brave_Losers_Unite - nitpick? You mean like scientists nitpicking which computer model they want to listen to or choosing to ignore the video because it doesn’t fit your liberal indoctrinated agenda? How do you explain the 12 year period from 2005-2017 without a major hurricane? Climate change just decide to take some time off?

Brave_Losers_Unite2088d ago (Edited 2088d ago )

@Psychotica

The amount of stupidity in your comment and your brain isn't worth the effort to reply to.

***How do you explain the 12 year period from 2005-2017 without a major hurricane?***

Weather != climate. This is the same as holding up a ball of snow in the Senate and going "I thought it was getting warmer."

Lol people like you two are reason why we can never fix what's wrong with our world. Pls leave this planet.

Rhythmattic2088d ago

Lets just sit back and think about all this for a moment...
Increasing Costs have not made it any better, nor the exploding population of 3rd world countries...
Yes, Climate change exists.... That is a fact (or not if you think the world id flat) Ice cores show this marble has gone through many....
And is it a fact the Human species is the reason? Or was it happening anyway? Or was is it not ? Or are we just accelerating whats is unstoppable?????

But just like Left and Right wingers, theres never anything in-between... Its a debate that doesent solve shit.
Energy prices in australia have gone up 500% , at least in the last decade....
That aside.....
Dont you think he has a point?

Sorry bud I’ll stick with the consensus by experts and not some lobby. Where I live the climate has changed over the past several years and it’s negatively impacting where I live.

You conspiracy theorists are a complete joke. You don’t do your research and actively search for shit that “confirms” what you already believe despite it not actually proving what you think it does.

I’m willing to bet you were one of those who cried aloud when the migration crisis was ongoing. It’s going to get worse because of climate change. There are already places on the earth that are unbearable for humans now.

Yes, the handful of them versus the 98% of others.

And note, even most of those who dispute alarmism agree that we are affecting climate change, they just disagree about the data pointing to how quickly but tend to agree that we should change things to limit our effect on climate but at a slower pace.

If the Netherlands hasn’t drowned yet, which is still vey far away from it and not even the population is worried about it, then we should be fine

Rimeskeem2088d ago

You understand that rising sea levels is not the same across the world. Some places rise more than others. The true factors are that extreme weather is getting worse and more constant and Europe is becoming hotter each year. Copenhagen had a 40+ day drought, longest in recorded history. We also know that the carbon density in the air is higher than it has been in the last 800,000 years. All this allows scientists to know that yes the world is warming, and it almost certainly has to do with carbon emissions and pollutants in the air.

Sophisticated_Chap2088d ago (Edited 2088d ago )

Rimeskeem, that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Ocean levels rise and fall equally across the world. It is essentially all one ocean. It's almost like saying that your glass of water fills to different levels. I live 10 minutes from the ocean here in British Columbia, a completely different region than The Netherlands, and the ocean level is the same today as it was when I was a kid.

Need proof that the alarmists don't really care about the climate? Bring up nuclear. They have no interest in nuclear, because nuclear power doesn't have a clear path to large scale government power grabs. Nuclear powers most of France cleanly, fewer people have died from nuclear power than any other form. So why don't the alarmists want to talk about it? Hmmm.

Christopher2088d ago

Well this is false. Nuclear is an option tons of people are exploring. My wife works for the EDF owned company in the U.S.

gangsta_red2088d ago

Your wife works for the Earth Defense Force?

Bladesfist2088d ago

Nuclear is just really expensive compared to other renewables per MWh in my part of the world. We are currently building one new nuclear plant and will be paying the energy company double the tariff per MWh that we pay for solar and wind.

sander97022088d ago

You're not allowed to say it's a scam don't you know there is undeniable proof like a 16 year old suicidal girl with autism repeating the green propaganda that has been used by crypto-communists for years, if she says it then it's gotta be true since she has the experience of being a 16 year old suicidal girl with autism!

Oh and did you know 99/100 scientists say global warming is real don't look into who those scientists are though and how they are just humans like us who have been brainwashed by the educational system that was taken over by crypto-communists when it was decided that secularism is the only true faith, just obey stop questioning.

Imalwaysright2088d ago

I'm not 16, I'm 33 and I don't need a 16 year old or an army of 1000 scientists to tell me that the climate is changing. I just need my eyes, my skin and my bones and I trust them more than anyone else. I know that the climate is changing. What I don't know is if we're the driving force behind it or if it's something that is happening naturally.

Sophisticated_Chap2087d ago (Edited 2087d ago )

@ Imalwaysright

I agree, the climate is changing, and has always been changing. Right here in British Columbia in Canada, during the Ice Age, this area was covered with more than 2km of snow and ice. To my knowledge, it wasn't coal fired power plants, or big block Chevy 350s that melted the ice, rather, it was natural processes. Scientists have also studied the Seatle and Vancouver areas, and discovered that these areas had tropical climates, several million years ago.

Scientists have only been keeping weather records for around the last 130 years, and the earliest of those records are not very accurate, as they did not have weather stations all over the world like they do today. Also, Weather Satellites have only been in use since the 1970s. So when you understand that the earth is around 5 billion years old, and we've only been collecting weather data for 130 years, it really shows how ignorant people are on the topic.

FGHFGHFGH2088d ago

mkis0072088d ago (Edited 2088d ago )

The problem is if it isn't a scam we are talking extinction....if it is a scam things cost more...that is a terrible bet.

Technology should naturally make lives better anyway; continuously finding a new efficient fuel source should be a priority from a technology standpoint.

Sophisticated_Chap2087d ago (Edited 2087d ago )

Technology is great, and if this is what the climate change people were pushing, I might be on board with it, because why not? The problem is that everything they are proposing is meant to make peoples lives harder and more expensive to live, and you aren't seeing any real world push for technology that would actually solve the problem.

Wind farms are not a good source of energy, as it takes around 1000 windmills to produce equivelent power to that of one coal fired power plant. Since the wind doesn't blow all the time, the windmills spend much of their time not moving at all. During that time, windmills require electricity from the power grid, keeping a generator running, so that when the wind starts to blow, the generator can power the motors, which are used to get the windmill spinning. Once there is enough wind, the windmill can spin on its own, but this could be for just 5 or 10 minutes, or it could be for several hours. Not a reliable source of energy.

With Solar power, most people think it would make sense to have solar panels on the roof of their houses and apartment buildings, and I agree, but governments have no intention of allowing that on a widespread basis. Instead, when politicians talk about Solar, they are refering to Solar Farms, where electric companies buy up many hundreds/thousands of acres of land, and completely cover the land with solar panels. This means that you will continue to purchase electricity through a centralised distribution grid, which the government can continue to tax.

Please look into United Nations Agenda 21 (Agenda for the 21st Century), and you will then have a wake-up call. In fact, once you start looking into what the world politicians, billionaires, tech companies, media companies and world bankers are planning, your world will be turned upside down, and you may even get depressed. We're basically living in a science experiment, but the average person is clueless, and when confronted with arguements against their world view, they simply disregard and science, common sense or reasonable discussion, and revert back to a zombie-like state of thinking, and use talking points that Al Gore or people like David Suzki use, such as 97% of scientists say......, which is actually based only on scientists who are part of the IPCC, a wing of the U.N..

It is also based on scientists who apply for government grants for their work, where they are asked what their position is on global warming. If they say they do not believe the science or that they have science that proves the opposite of the hive mind thinking, then they are not eligable for their grants, which is why 97% just go along with it, because they do not have a choice.

Bleucrunch2088d ago

To think climate change is a scam is a rather harsh position to take seeing as their is scientific evidence to support this.

It is horrifying that there are some people who too believe it is a scam....what is worst is that some of those folks are in a position of power to try to discredit it....just shameful.

frostypants2088d ago (Edited 2087d ago )

I'm all for save the planet hug a tree I think this is a PR stunt by Microsoft to make it look like they actually care. I bet after those 825,000 they'll just go back to the old ways once they see the production costs of making an Xbox both ways.

Christopher2088d ago

This I agree with. I'm also certain most of the manufacturers they work with are outside of the U.S. and are already pressured to reduce carbon footprint by their respective governments.

Atom6662088d ago

I believe most are made in Singapore where some decent climate change initiatives are in place.

So, yeah. I'm guessing there was a minimal cost to hit this new goal from MS.

Something must be going on, because I just saw this from Sony:

https://www.ign.com/article...

Changing the world over here...

annoyedgamer2088d ago

The only way we can end catastrophic climate change (which is already ocurring) is if we ban the manufacture and sale of products that are not carbon neutral immidiately. One could even make the case for the arrest of CEO's and seizure of assetts to pay reparations to the millions already displaced or killed by the climate catastrophy.

rainslacker2087d ago

A lot of big companies are doing this. It's a good thing, and if they follow through on their promises, they should get positive attention for it. Back in 2010, sony stopped using lead in their electronics, and reduced the amount of mercury used within its solder. That may not seem like a big deal, but think about the number of electronics that get tossed in landfills every year, and all that lead and mercury which bleed into local water tables. I believe ms started doing the same thing a few years later, and a few years after that, it was slated that all electronics sold in the US, and EU followed suit, could not contain over a certain amount of lead or mercury.

Sometimes companies go the extra mile. Sometimes they're forced by regulation or pending regulation. Other times it's to take advantage of tax incentives for clean industry.

May be for good PR, but its deserved good PR

ApocalypseShadow2088d ago (Edited 2088d ago )

Microsoft reporting actual hardware numbers? Insanity.

It's a joke Chris. It's a joke. I know what you're going to do. Let there be jokes sometimes..lol!

But seriously, you can see the effects of the climate decimating areas that haven't been effected in our lifetime. Places hotter than before on record that weren't hot before. Places burning consistently without reforestation. Flooding in coastal areas that creates refugees that become a burden to other communities willing to assist with their needs.

Even if you would think there's no such thing as climate change, there's weather destruction that costs in the billions that could be used for other things if we prepared for it sooner, and built things in better ways to help prevent the rising costs to rebuild. You can close your eyes all you want, but those figures in costs aren't an illusion.

Any bit helps. And if Microsoft wants to build carbon neutral consoles to help in some way, I can at least call that a good thing. We need people to be proactive than inactive. And that's before we get on the subject of plastic and food waste.

CaptainObvious8782088d ago

Of course the climate is changing, but how much of that is due to human activity and how much of it is due to other factors like the cosmos?

I suggest listening to scientists that aren't on the payroll of an interest group.

Sophisticated_Chap2087d ago (Edited 2087d ago )

Well, as an example, all CO2 in the atmosphere makes up, depending on what atmopheric chart you look at, on average 0.035% total, as a percentage of the atmosphere. Meanwhile, Nitrogen makes up 80%, Oxygen roughlt 19% and then there are a number of gasses that make up the final 1%.

Humans are responsible for just 4% of total CO2, meaning that the CO2 that is human caused, makes up just 0.00114% of total CO2 in the atmosphere. These numbers should make any free thinking person question the science being peddled.

Christopher2087d ago

@Chap

https://climate.nasa.gov/vi...

https://climate.nasa.gov/ca...

"Carbon dioxide (CO2). A minor but very important component of the atmosphere, carbon dioxide is released through natural processes such as respiration and volcano eruptions and through human activities such as deforestation, land use changes, and burning fossil fuels. Humans have increased atmospheric CO2 concentration by more than a third since the Industrial Revolution began. This is the most important long-lived "forcing" of climate change."

With it's light weight version of windows, ergonomic controls, gaming performance, and open system with multiple store launchers, it may be the best handheld on the market. This device is more pro consumer instead of a handheld that just plays Xbox games.

If my cash wasn't so tight this year I would be looking to pick up one at or around launch and I have no issues recommending it to any gamer as long as it is within their price range.

PapaBop3d ago

Pro consumer? Have you seen the rumoured price for it? At that price and using an LCD panel, pro consumer is not the words I'd use to describe it.

DivineHand1252d ago

So for you if it had an OLED screen but stay in a closed walled off software ecosystem, that would be pro consumer?

This is for the people who want an ergonomic handheld with as much power they could possibly get without compromising the battery life. It also gives you the ability to connect to your own display or an external GPU for those with the budget. What I love about it the most is that you have multiple competing store fronts so you can shop around for the best prices for your games.

BeHunted2d ago

Agree to disagree. This would open up a new era of Windows Handheld gaming devices: a cut down version of Windows with no bloatware, with hundreds of gaming clients.

crazyCoconuts2d ago

"cut down version of Windows without bloatware"
No such thing exists. Temper your expectations... Windows launching straight into the Xbox app.

mkis0072d ago

It doesn't play all xbox games though. It plays pc games, meaning if you don't have play anywhere titles, you have to buy them again.

DivineHand1252d ago

Right now that is a small inconvenience as the play anywhere program is not perfect.

You have to consider that it is offering something that no one else is doing for a large number of titles. That small nitpick should not count against this device and we as gamers should support moves like this.

crazyCoconuts2d ago

Would you still consider this pro consumer if you learned this is just MS' way of telling you there won't be any more consoles, just PCs?

DivineHand1252d ago

If it means I won't have to pay any subscription fees for online gaming I would say yes to that.

Nintendo Switch 2 sales shatters records, most-sold console in 24-hour period

Crazy. Switch 2 is going to do very well.

darthv724d ago (Edited 4d ago )

No doubt, but.... the current price is out of the realm of the average parent / kid to buy like the SW1 was. So this launch achievement is from those of us with more disposable income.

The number of SW2 specific titles pales in comparison to the variety of SW1 games that get a performance boost right out of the box on this. And like the SX and PS5 before it, you can bet the majority are going to be using it as a means to better enjoy their existing titles that can benefit.

This may have been quick out of the gate... so was the WiiU. I quite enjoy it for what it is, but am keeping my expectations in check.

GenoPurpel4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

The Switch 2’s price point is great and fine and it’s still cheaper than the current gen of consoles aside from the Series S.

The only place I think they will fall short is their software sales, which also in turn may affect the hardware sales but not significantly. Parents will be fine paying for the system for their kids, but one look at an $80-$90 price tag for a single video game, that is where a lot of people will draw the line. Maybe not so much the people who are in the “willing to pay because I buy deluxe editions anyway” crowd, but for parents specifically, more sacrifices are gonna need to be made in their choices of gifts for their kids.

OtterX4d ago

As a parent of 3 with a very modest income, it was very affordable bc I already had an immense library of games, and the Mario Kart bundle came out to only about €50 more than a standard bundle. Both Zeldas were upgraded w Family Expansion Pass that I already had. Many games were upgraded for free. The only additional game I bought was Fast Fusion for 14.99 which was a great purchase!

Killer2020UK4d ago

People seem to forget that the Switch was $299 at launch which in today's money is roughly $400. That makes the Switch 2 a $50 increase when inflation is taken into account compared to the original.

Yes, people have less spending power on average compared to 2017 (Switch launch year) but this is not the MASSIVE price hike that people are making out Nintendo to be doing.

raWfodog3d ago

“No doubt, but.... the current price is out of the realm of the average parent / kid to buy like the SW1 was. So this launch achievement is from those of us with more disposable income.”

It could also be many people rushing to buy to avoid any possible tariff hikes in the future, but I think it’s still a good sign that many people still want physical consoles. Congrats to Nintendo! I’m not getting one at this time though (unless I get it for a Xmas present for one of my kids).

I bought the Switch 2 I won’t be buying games at MK prices. I don’t ever pay over £45 for my games. Even my Nintendo switch exclusives I never paid more than £33 for.

franwex3d ago

I think the typo you put was meant to be $80.
Anyway, the answer to those questions seem to be yes.

victorMaje3d ago

Looks like I’ve been enlightened about the amount. Happy to see it’s not $90.

Don't get your news from clickbait TikTokers/YouTubers, only go to the source (Nintendo) or reliable new outlets like IGN.

No game is $90 on the Switch 2, and they will never go there. Most games will be under $80, too.

cool
wasnt expecting it not to sell well

Profchaos4d ago

Its crazy that it's both the highest selling console on day 1 and people can walk into a store and buy it with no pre order

Ashunderfire864d ago

Yup while I was waiting in line from Best Buy for Switch 2, like I did for Switch 1 back in 2017, every waiting 12am was going to get a Switch 2! I was in the no preorder line too!

My friend manage to get 4 Switch 2s at his GameStop store, that was lowkey not busy at all. Got them all for himself and his family. Super easy to get a Switch 2 over PS5.

Profchaos4d ago

The struggle to get a ps5 was real had mates wait over 2 years for stock i got lucky and got it day 1 but still

Ashunderfire863d ago

I know and I also struggled getting a preorder for the PS5, when Walmart, Best Buy among other retailers open their preorders a day early before most of us realize it. I got my PS5 launch day thanks to YouTube Live Streamer Jake Randell. He helps people get preorders and launch consoles.

Neonridr3d ago

the PS5 also released during a global pandemic.

Ashunderfire863d ago

It’s funny how I got disagrees for speaking the truth for what I experienced getting the Switch 2. Nintendo had more copies of Switch 2 than Sony for the PS5.

Don’t be butthurt about this very fact. People on here disagreeing with crazy reasons lol

Doesn't that mean Nintendo made sure they had plenty of stock available at retail.

Profchaos4d ago

Yeah it's nice to see they prepped for it

adamwparker4d ago

Yeah, I remember reading an article over two years ago with Nintendo stating that they were going to do all that they could to make sure their next console didn't have the PS5/XBox reseller swiping /no stock fiasco happen to them.

Looks like they made sure production met demand. Refreshing to see that the reseller thing didn't trend and I hope a lot of people who bought multiple units for the sole reason to resell then at $1000 are now stuck with them.

jznrpg3d ago

It also means there isn’t a chip shortage when PS5/Xbox came out during pandemic

gold_drake4d ago

to be where fair, we had a current gen come out during covid ha

repsahj3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

I remembered I tried 7 pre-order events during the PS5 launch. I gave up and ended up buying 1 from a scalper. But now, I already secured 1 pre-order Switch 2 unit in my country very easy and without problems.

Neonridr3d ago

kudos to Nintendo for ensuring a healthy amount of stock.

Unlike the Switch 2 , the Playstation 4 was not sold on the same day in most regions.
