The climate crisis is a massive problem that not only consumers, but large companies have to tackle. Today, Microsoft announced that it was going to take substantial steps to make its productions and operations more environmentally friendly. While the company has a number of initiatives it's going to push, it also plans to make 825,000 Xbox consoles carbon neutral.

You understand that rising sea levels is not the same across the world. Some places rise more than others. The true factors are that extreme weather is getting worse and more constant and Europe is becoming hotter each year. Copenhagen had a 40+ day drought, longest in recorded history. We also know that the carbon density in the air is higher than it has been in the last 800,000 years. All this allows scientists to know that yes the world is warming, and it almost certainly has to do with carbon emissions and pollutants in the air.

I agree, the climate is changing, and has always been changing. Right here in British Columbia in Canada, during the Ice Age, this area was covered with more than 2km of snow and ice. To my knowledge, it wasn't coal fired power plants, or big block Chevy 350s that melted the ice, rather, it was natural processes. Scientists have also studied the Seatle and Vancouver areas, and discovered that these areas had tropical climates, several million years ago.

Scientists have only been keeping weather records for around the last 130 years, and the earliest of those records are not very accurate, as they did not have weather stations all over the world like they do today. Also, Weather Satellites have only been in use since the 1970s. So when you understand that the earth is around 5 billion years old, and we've only been collecting weather data for 130 years, it really shows how ignorant people are on the topic.

Technology is great, and if this is what the climate change people were pushing, I might be on board with it, because why not? The problem is that everything they are proposing is meant to make peoples lives harder and more expensive to live, and you aren't seeing any real world push for technology that would actually solve the problem.

Wind farms are not a good source of energy, as it takes around 1000 windmills to produce equivelent power to that of one coal fired power plant. Since the wind doesn't blow all the time, the windmills spend much of their time not moving at all. During that time, windmills require electricity from the power grid, keeping a generator running, so that when the wind starts to blow, the generator can power the motors, which are used to get the windmill spinning. Once there is enough wind, the windmill can spin on its own, but this could be for just 5 or 10 minutes, or it could be for several hours. Not a reliable source of energy.

With Solar power, most people think it would make sense to have solar panels on the roof of their houses and apartment buildings, and I agree, but governments have no intention of allowing that on a widespread basis. Instead, when politicians talk about Solar, they are refering to Solar Farms, where electric companies buy up many hundreds/thousands of acres of land, and completely cover the land with solar panels. This means that you will continue to purchase electricity through a centralised distribution grid, which the government can continue to tax.

Please look into United Nations Agenda 21 (Agenda for the 21st Century), and you will then have a wake-up call. In fact, once you start looking into what the world politicians, billionaires, tech companies, media companies and world bankers are planning, your world will be turned upside down, and you may even get depressed. We're basically living in a science experiment, but the average person is clueless, and when confronted with arguements against their world view, they simply disregard and science, common sense or reasonable discussion, and revert back to a zombie-like state of thinking, and use talking points that Al Gore or people like David Suzki use, such as 97% of scientists say......, which is actually based only on scientists who are part of the IPCC, a wing of the U.N..

It is also based on scientists who apply for government grants for their work, where they are asked what their position is on global warming. A lot of big companies are doing this. It's a good thing, and if they follow through on their promises, they should get positive attention for it. Back in 2010, sony stopped using lead in their electronics, and reduced the amount of mercury used within its solder. That may not seem like a big deal, but think about the number of electronics that get tossed in landfills every year, and all that lead and mercury which bleed into local water tables. I believe ms started doing the same thing a few years later, and a few years after that, it was slated that all electronics sold in the US, and EU followed suit, could not contain over a certain amount of lead or mercury.

Sometimes companies go the extra mile. Sometimes they're forced by regulation or pending regulation. Other times it's to take advantage of tax incentives for clean industry.

Places burning consistently without reforestation. Flooding in coastal areas that creates refugees that become a burden to other communities willing to assist with their needs.

Even if you would think there's no such thing as climate change, there's weather destruction that costs in the billions that could be used for other things if we prepared for it sooner, and built things in better ways to help prevent the rising costs to rebuild. You can close your eyes all you want, but those figures in costs aren't an illusion.

Well, as an example, all CO2 in the atmosphere makes up, depending on what atmopheric chart you look at, on average 0.035% total, as a percentage of the atmosphere. Meanwhile, Nitrogen makes up 80%, Oxygen roughlt 19% and then there are a number of gasses that make up the final 1%.

Humans are responsible for just 4% of total CO2, meaning that the CO2 that is human caused, makes up just 0.00114% of total CO2 in the atmosphere. These numbers should make any free thinking person question the science being peddled.

they probably had it in the works for a while. MS as a company doesn't have to react to Sony as a company. The only place they really compete heavily in is gaming. Large company wide initiatives arent just thrown together in a few days, and changeovers like these can cost a lot of money.

I'm glad level-headed conservatives exist. So many conservatives are so focused on denying climate-change or at least the hand humans have in it until they're blue in the face simply because if true it's highly inconvenient for them that they fail to realize that there's actually plenty of room to acknowledge climate change and the impacts of human activity while still holding to conservative values, and they would get far more credit for their intelligence while they're at it.

In fact, it's actually more productive IMHO to say, argue against things like carbon tax by weighing the potential benefits to the environment with the potential detriment to industry and the highly suspect nature of having to trust the government to take 100% of that tax and use it towards things that are relevant to helping save the planet.

So, yes, you can be conservative and care about the planet. In fact you may be more interested than the average liberal in actually examining not only whether the benefits of green initiatives are worth the cost, but also whether they're actually effective in curbing climate change and/or other environmental impacts (many liberals by my estimations seem to take these initiatives at face value and throw their support behind them).

Not all climate change deniers are Flat-Earthers. In-fact, the vast majority of them are people who just happen to live in certain regions or work in certain industries (or know someone who does), whose livelihood can be crippled by some environmental initiatives. I don't hold the view that one should turn away from the truth if it's inconvenient simply because it's a difficult pill to swallow, but I do know why a lot of conservatives deny climate change. Whether climate change is real or a serious threat or not, one cant deny that companies making their products or operations cleaner for the environment is a good thing.

Even if we arent all doomed to bake in the sun's radiation, itll be nice that the water tables from all the waste will be cleaner. That animals more sensitive to environmental changes may not be as negatively affected. That the skies won't be as clouded with the exhaust from manufacturing plants. So on and so forth.

Just go look at the images or videos of LA during the 80s and 90s from all the cars, and compare it to today. Cars running cleaner and producing less exhaust, has made it better, despite there being more drivers now, almost 20 years later.

The option to consume less power and limit the consoles capabilities is fine. I wouldn’t do it but don’t mind the option. Options and choice are rarely the bad direction imo. I feel that way about pretty much everything. I could not care less about my game consoles carbon footprint though.

The standards also killed more people. To make the vehicles meet arbitrary numbers in gas mileage they have to drastically reduce the weight in vehicles. They are supposed to crush like cans now where the old cars were tanks. You have 16 airbags all around the car now and still more people die. Smog is terrible, especially in crowded cities. That’s why public transportation should be such a big deal. It’s just cars sitting in traffic and their own exhaust fumes and that sucks but it’s nothing to apocalypticly shit your pants about. Ethanol and natural gas has made in big difference in air quality. The US is fairly low on the pollution charts already, what are these idiots protesting?

Really? is that statistic true? I did a quick look up, and since 1990 when most cars started moving towards being more fuel efficient, traffic deaths have actually decreased in the US by several thousand a year. They range between 37-41K, as opposed to 43-50K in years prior.

Cars crushing like cans actually makes them safer, as it provides more inertial dampening so the human body isn't traumatized so much in the crash. The airbags do help as well, and were an immediate drop in traffic deaths, and especially in injuries, after they became mandatory.

Cars being cleaner has much more to do with the way the engine handles the fuel, and how much fuel is actually wasted in the burn. Lighter cars allow for lower octanes, which produce less waste.

I don't disagree with everything you say, but in this case, your basing your allegorical reference on a falsehoods. Cars may seem less safe now because all those videos show them crinkling up like a tin can, but the reality is, is that it takes a lot more force to get appreciable damage inside the passenger compartment nowadays than it did on those tanks, which were basically just steel plate welded together, without all the reinforcing that engineering has brought to newer metals.

There may be other things in becoming more environmentally friendly which lead to deaths more often, but I'd also wager that those products may have other factors like poor design or quality control which should be considered, because things aren't made the way they used to. What those things which could be dangerous now may be, I couldn't really say, because nothing comes to mind.

But overall, and especially with what we're talking about here, I can't see how them being more environmentally friendly is a bad thing at all.

I too do not worry about my individual carbon footprint from a console. My TV probably draws more power. But there are things that are certainly better to want to be made more environmentally friendly. Cars, Air conditioners, the overall public lighting system within a city, so on and so forth. Collectively, the more friendly everything gets, the better it is for everyone.

That's probably all they have scheduled for production at the moment. Or that's all they could source through the places that could make it with clean industry processes. Possibly a test bed to see if the quality of these units meets their standards, but if theyn do, theyll probably move all their production over to it. If not, they dont want to be held to a promise they cant keep, although likely would try to find another way.

There are some things people shouldn't be so cynical about, and criticizing or undermining what ms is doing is not a good thing. Regardless of their reasons, or peoples own opinion about climate change, I dont see any reason why this is a bad thing

Diesel is cleaner than regular gas. But I guess you knew that. Truth is, the entire life of your car, your individual contribution is pretty insignificant to climate change. Its collectively and including industry, that it's a problem. Dunno if it's the major problem where we will get a point of no return, but cant see why people would not be ok with companies that are taking steps to run cleaner. Even if climate change is a scam or misunderstood, how is it bad to run cleaner?

I don't know what "carbon neutral" means but although I agree there's a climate crisis, I don't know how much of an impact this will have and I have a hard time believing MS of all companies actually cares about the environment. Ummm...no, it's not. Global warming is still a term being used, and you really shouldn't generalize all scientists, who by the way have spent way more time thinking about a particular topic and know way more about it than either you or I ever will, just because there may or may not be individuals in the scientific field who twist narratives and/or falsify data to benefit their agenda.

Global warming is just a far more limited term as it deals with temperature and its effect on the planet, while the term climate change can cover other things too that aren't temperature related, such as the Ph of the ocean or the effects of deforestation.

In any case, as I've said previously you can acknowledge the above without having to agree with what is being done about it and the sometimes unfair extremes to which certain governments can go to try and regulate it. I mean, just because some environmental initiatives are being implemented doesn't mean they're at all effective and oftentimes even if they are it's a very minute effect compared to the potential detriment that they cause to local businesses and even entire economies. Besides, if you choose to become well-versed in a subject you are better equipped to defend your point of view so it's highly recommended.

@deno I’m no scientist, but I’ll let the scientific community deal with their own politics as no one else has the time for that. Lulz. I’m more inclined to think that if the vast majority of people who dedicate their lives to a subject and know a lot about it feel one way they’re more likely to be correct, but to each their own.

You’re certainly right that a nuke would certainly have much worse ramifications though than daily commutes, and yeah, there are other issues that need to be dealt with too.

In any case, there are other groups to defer to for those other issues and they have an important task to do too. Local governments, social services, cops and individuals on some branches of the social sciences may be able to help.
