Scalebound's Cancellation Is a Loss for All of Us: Please Forget Your Console War at Least for Today

Today is a sad day for gaming. Microsoft has officially announced the cancellation of Scalebound, a triple-A action RPG directed by PlatinumGames' Hideki Kamiya as a collaboration between the prolific Kyoto-based developer and Microsoft Game Studios.

While some might look at it as a loss for Microsoft and Xbox, it's actually a net loss for all gamers.

Well a loss for gamers who wanted to play the game in the first place. Obviously naturally the haters will latch on but the loss is there.

But the criticism against MS is valid. For whatever reason Scalebound is cancelled, it's the burden on Xbox to prove it's worth.

The X1 should be hitting it's stride this year like the PS4 is. Whilst I gave flack to Sony for its first two years which imo were weak (especially considering the hype and stellar sales), 2017 looks undeniably great. The Xbox is doing the opposite of what it should.

I was (and to an extent still am) excited for the Scorpio but that's with the expectation of having some bloody games to play on the machine!

All I'm saying is, E3 better be wicked for Xbox otherwise the Xbox will suffer irreparable damage.

No more coasting on the same titles. That won't float for xbox anymore, regardless of how good they are

SpaceRanger3086d ago (Edited 3086d ago )

I honestly am disappointed. I myself give Xbox a lot of flak for talking a lot (specifically Major Nelson and Aaron are the more annoying of their camp). But this just isn't good at all for the gaming community.

I'm sure MS has enough unshown software to hold itself afloat this year against Switch and PS4. But this news really has left a gaping hole to start off MS' new year hype.

i don't know what the author is smoking.

The game was nothing great to begin with. The character was some typical american teenager which had no charm to begin with. It looked like Insomniacs' game for Xbox - Sunset Overdrive. Except the kid here was on dragon and less cartoony.

Here's the bitter truth, EVEN IF THE GAME DID COME OUT, this game would have sold less than most of the Xbox exclusives.

So we didn't miss anything. We just did not get another substandard uninteresting game like Recore. We should actually thank the devs for coming in senses and cancelling it before the entire project became a drudgery just to bring it out. Maybe they did a pre-survey and found the game unappealing. Things like that happen.

3086d ago
nveenio3086d ago

I'm not disappointed or even surprised. Once they released the first full gameplay demo of this game, I was convinced that it was going to be pretty terrible. More evidence of that was granted by how quickly it was forgotten. There was simply nothing about it that was memorable or standout. Even the main character was obnoxious. I don't envy the creators, though. It's a tough time to be making games. So many different things have been done by now. The only real way to stand out is to just be complete technical or artistic masters (like Naughty Dog, Guerrilla, Kojima), and that's a rare trait. I'm in an even worse position than Platinum, having just released a game that completely sucks and working on a new one that also completely sucks. It's a hard business.

Angeljuice3085d ago

@Nix

What a load of rubbish you talk. This was the most interesting game coming for Xbox1.
"So we didn't miss anything. We just did not get another substandard uninteresting game like Recore. "
My guess is that you came to that conclusion after the Messiah said cancelling it is what's best for gamers.

He was wrong and so are you. This was the only Microsoft IP that I had any interest in whatsoever.

I don't know what the legal complexities are, but I still want this game to be released on some platform. Maybe the IP could be given to Platinum to do with what they will (with whatever caveats they require).

indysurfn3085d ago (Edited 3085d ago )

I'm sure that Microsoft knew it was not going to be a good product when it got finished even if they put more effort into. Good they cut loses and went on from that. Releasing a bad game is NOT a loss. Keeping people hyped for a game they will regret paying for and selling to them is a loss for the industry.

Just because it seemed good does not mean it was. What if it was so repetitive that it was not worth $10? Would people still be jumping on Microsoft, yep....except worse! And fanboys will be pointing and wagging fingers and laughing.

This is one of the better things they have done. Good job Microsofty

You mean the first 2 years right? 2016 was not a weak year for Sony.

Sorry yeah not 2016 . Edited the comment.

Whoever says the year Bloodborne was released was a weak year has some weak reasoning.

foxdie2k153085d ago

I cant remember since ps3 end cycle it had a weak moment its been announcing and dominating in sales and exclusive unlike mocrosoft just cancelling and talking smack about scorpio with no games at all to show for it i was looking foward to scalebound i have both systems and over 40 games not including digital for ps4 and the gears entires series and halo 5 and lost odyssy for xbox 1 so basically 3 xbox 1 games and a like 4 games for the 360 great job ms keep up the great job

moegooner883085d ago

2015 was my fav year on PS4. Bloodborne and Until Dawn are still my favs this gen. Nothing weak about it

Phantom Dust isn't cancelled. It's still in development last I heard but yeah, generally it's not good enough.

It is ridiculous and disappointing. But that's for xbox fans like me. Not those hoping for things like this. 😉

Overload3086d ago (Edited 3086d ago )

The real Xbox One Phantom Dust is cancelled, the one they have coming is a HD Remaster of it.

"Phantom Dust is getting an HD remaster next year, Not to be confused with the cancelled remake."

Agreed. Regardless of who's really at fault here for Scalebound's cancellation (some say MS mismanaged, while others say Platinum was too ambitious and couldn't deliver); the point stands that Microsoft really needs to get their act together and go all in on cultivating some homegrown talent and getting a strong lineup of first party studios. Gears, Halo and Forza are great and all, but they can't carry the Xbox brand forever.

GamingIVfun3086d ago (Edited 3085d ago )

Microsoft has lots of money, yes. they spend a lot of money (extreme amounts) on advertising, they are willing to lose lots of money on hardware (sales and giveaways with purchase). Why do they not allow the wright amount of time and money to make sure there games are good when released... Recore not finished lots of bugs,,,, all the Halo games took a long time after release to fix online problems with the so called best gaming network, not to mention Halo 5's single player was boring and seemed like it was rushed. Then there's canceling of big games that looked very promising, Scalebound received lots of game of show awards, the new Fable game looked very promising also. Then you have the many delayed games, many of the games Microsoft announced to early and over hyped. Cloud gaming, Direct 12 being touted as big boost for Xbox One games......not really. Abandoning Kinect after forcing early adopters to by it if they wanted an Xbox One. Hololens isn't likely to be released any time soon.

Phil's not making any real difference in making Xbox One successful....a distant second successful maybe,,, they are still losing ground.

I own all the consoles, have an Xbox One S it's not about console wars, I truly believe that Microsoft have done a terrible job with the Xbox brand and I have been hoping for a long time that would get better.

I was really looking forward to playing Scalebound.

GamerGT3085d ago

I just get the vibe that Project Scorpio is going to be Microsoft wanting to be every bit into the gaming scene minus the XBOX name but with the XBOX live or Windows store environment. I think they want a box that plays PC games and Microsoft exclusive games and multiplats. Essentially a gaming PC minus the functionality and expense of a traditional gaming PC. They ride the Windows 10 horse hard with a traditional console interface. Just gaming: no Microsoft Office, Outlook, Adobe. Just gaming, Blu-ray player and streaming services such as Netflix. I could see Microsoft going this approach and as an PlayStation guy this would appeal to me and would find it valuable if priced right. Again I see this to be where they're headed. I could be wrong though. I would buy this if Microsoft did this. And then just get a cheap PC for its traditional office use.

GamingIVfun3085d ago

A PC that doesn't do everything a PC can do is what modern console is, PS4 and Xbox One. I don't really see how Xbox and PC having the same operating system helps that much if at all. They all (Xbox One, PS4 and PC) share similar architectures and are pretty easy to develop for as is. Xbox One and PS4 probably much easier than PC development. A fixed architecture like console is the best choice for developing games, they only have to worry about one system vrs. variations on hundreds of thousands of different PC 's.

Consoles are already the solution to PC gaming... price of entry, difficulty's caused by various machine types (cpu , graphics card, mother boards, memory), steeper learning curve. Consoles are the answer to that.

Fluxour3086d ago

Is there an off chance that another publisher might pick up scalebound and they can continue development? Probably unheard/impossible, but you seem to have a good grasp on the industry so I'm curious as to your thoughts.

Gazondaily3086d ago

Microsoft own the IPro so it's dead in the water.

RedPill863086d ago

False. Nothing but false, biased BS.

Zero criticism against Microsoft is valid as you have zero facts as to what happened.

You have only a handful of facts to work with.

P only makes AA games on a AA budget.
M asked them to make a AAA game on a AAA budget.
Team lead is stressed, obviously having a hard time with work (after at least one delay for extra time).

So what can we pull from what LITTLE information we have? It sounds like they bit off more than they could chew, and that's IT. Wait for the god damn facts, fanboy, and quit regurgitating the same BS that everyone else here throws around. Blaming Microsoft before we have any evidence they did anything.

By this stupid logic we should stop doing any investigations about anything. Simply lock people away based on feelings. What a great idea that would be.

3086d ago
_-EDMIX-_3086d ago

Maybe you should start directing that anger towards the actual publisher that seems to be playing it safe......

Fanboys didn't cancel this game bud

this is exactly what I was talking about when I said Microsoft entire first party is a house of cards.

Gazondaily3086d ago

Did you even read what I posted? Your propensity to get things wrong is astounding. I literally squarely blamed Microsoft the publisher.

Where on earth did I say fanboys cancelled the game?

joab7773086d ago

It's gonna be tough when Sony drops the Pro and slim price, offers bundles and about 50 exclusives! Their games this year and next are obscene! That and they will have a year's head start on their next console!

Automatic793086d ago (Edited 3086d ago )

@Septic

Well said, I was one of the gamers excited for this game, especially the ability to play a Western Action RPG with great Japanese developer influence.

I think it leaves a hole on what could have been a solid year, really hope they have a good Third party exclusive to fill that hole or have an ace up their sleeve.

Right now

Halo Wars
Sea of Thieves
State of Decay 2
Crackdown 3
Forza 7

Each of these games look good. However, they need to use that money they saving from Scalebound and acquire one or two exclusives for Xbox One from well know third party developers.

Note what makes this weird is that Platinum has made in the last few years, Bayonetta 2, Transformers, TMNT, now Nier Automa, and they can't complete Scalebound. Something beyond what we are told has happened.

SpaceRanger3086d ago (Edited 3086d ago )

"However, they need to use that money they saving from Scalebound and acquire one or two exclusives for Xbox One from well know third party developers."

That comment is exactly why stuff like this happens more frequently to no other gaming company except MS. You can't just buy a good game.

This really does put into perspective how exclusives matter. Especially when 80% of the games you listed don't have a release date.

mark_parch3086d ago

totally agree septic

first of all i feel gutted for all the people that have worked hard for 4 years on this game, i was genuinely excited for it.

second microsoft best have at least 2 other games we don't know about coming this year aside from motorsport 7 or i'm going to be really pissed.

and last off, i'm really concerned for crackdown 3 now

wutang4ever3086d ago

PS gamers depend on MS doing well. If not Sony will get lazy.

Competition is good for gamers and the industry

jojo3193085d ago (Edited 3085d ago )

100% true in the real world. Why people want ANY console to fail is beyond belief. I can understand wanting your console to do well, but actually wanting the other to fail is just dumb and hurts ALL gamers in the end. It's basically just schadenfreude. However here at "myconsoleisbetterthanyou rs.com", the gamers will never unite as one community. It would be great if people could help people with game decisions, recommend games on other systems and encourage people to buy games regardless of platform. That would be a real gaming "community".

nowitzki20043085d ago

I wasnt too interested in the game but kept it on my radar. Sad to see any game get cancelled for a lot of reasons, 1 of them being there is people that put in a lot of work into it and dedicated themselves to it and all for nothing? Hopefully we still see Scalebound sometime in the future.

Chexs19903085d ago (Edited 3085d ago )

This game was literally one of the reasons why I bought my Xb1 dude, so this whole cancellation business is a huge kick in the groins to me -_-
That and cuphead were the games I was looking forward to the most, maybe even a new Alan Wake.
I do agree with you that MS needs to pull something other than a new Halo/Forza/Gears. The games are great and all but come on man, there is no excitement to it anymore because you know that those titles are always incoming :O

hamzilla3085d ago

I wonder how far in development this game was. I am calling this out there that SONY or someone else will talk to the parent company and take this and keep it going because it was looking to be a legit top AAA game....

Seafort3085d ago

I just wonder which 3rd party game MS will try to acquire to replace Scalebound. I hate E3 as a PC gamer as Sony or Microsoft always try to buy exclusivity rights for one or two games I'm interested in which was already coming to PC before E3.

MS are getting desperate at this point and it's inevitable they'll buy timed or full exclusivity to bulk up their games lineup for E3.

Omnislashver363086d ago

Dude you are crazy. Unreal Engine basically kept Microsoft afloat last gen with Gears of War. Kingdom Hearts 2.8 has amazing graphics, and KH3 even better(those games might not even have come out this gen if they sticked with the previous engine, Luminous Engine). Same with Final Fantasy VII Remake. And there's a shit ton of other games on UE4, it's one of the best engines in existence.

never4get3086d ago

"there's a shit ton of other games on UE4". Yes they are shit. Final Fantasy VII Remake? "Smoke and Mirrors", any recent news about its development? NONE. "it's one of the best engines in existence" More UE4 lies.

rocketpanda3086d ago

Are you seriously blaming a game engine for failed game projects from Japanese developers even though many other developers use it and have made and making titles using Unreal 4? That's a new low, a really stupid low.

Relegating your reason exclusively to Japanese developers failure on the engine, how laughable. Please tell that to Suda regarding Let it Die which plays and works just fine. How about Abzu, Gears 4, LawBreakers, Paragon that received positive reception. Look at upcoming titles in development and some in beta being enjoy like Sea of Thieves running on Unreal 4.

Your excuse would mean that Japanese developers don't know how to code for Unreal well enough, which just isn't true. The Engine isn't the problem, Microsoft decided to cancel the title, that is all the information we have at this point.

Omnislashver363086d ago

Final Fantasy VII Remake hasn't had new news because of Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts 2.8... They'd cannibalize their own sales if they advertised later games and got people psyched for them instead of the games coming out as we speak. And Kingdom Hearts 2.8 is out in two weeks. After that we'll see more on Final Fantasy VII Remake, use some common sense.

trooper_3086d ago

This has nothing to do with Unreal Engine...

kayoss3085d ago (Edited 3085d ago )

Its not Unreal Engine that you should blame. Its the people using it. If they dont know how to use it then they shouldnt use it. Its like blaming adobe Photoshop for doing a piss poor job of editing a picture, but the tools are there. Its up to the user to know how to use it effectively.

Dragonscale3085d ago

@never, blame anything but MS right?

3085d ago
johndoe112113085d ago (Edited 3085d ago )

I'm convinced you suffer from some sort of mental disorder.

rainslacker3085d ago

ummm....huh?

Game developers aren't complete idiots, and they would know how to use a game engine when starting to use it, or even deciding which engine to use to build a game.

UE4 isn't the problem here. The engine is fine, and more than capable of building a game in it.

The reason we don't have more games released on the engine is that it's still relatively new, and these things take time. But I'd imagine UE4 will end up being the most used engine for the remainder of this gen.

I'm curious why you think devs have been scammed. What exactly was the scam? I work with UE4, and it works, is well supported, and well documented, and Epic is quick to work on improvements needed by developers when necessary.

What a boring year for Xbox if nothing replaces it. Apart from Halo Wars 2,I expect to just hit up the multiplats.

conanlifts3086d ago

Same. Every year i have overall preferred the xbox exclusives over the ps4. But this year there is little that appeals. The ps4 on the other hand is destroying xbox if they release even half of their anticipated games.

Hideki Kamiya wants to revive Scalebound: 'Let's do it, Phil'

Hideki Kamiya is still interested in developing Scalebound, after the PlatinumGames and Microsoft action game was cancelled back in 2017.

ZwVw111d ago

He's been begging for the past three years. That ship has long sailed. Besides, Phil's a fake. When's the last time he delivered on a game the fans asked for? Still waiting on him to greenlight KI4.

InUrFoxHole110d ago

@8bit
Yeah I mentioned that below. Although in comparison concord was a bigger failure.

MetroidFREAK21111d ago

I mean I'm all for it... I'd buy it for PS5 since Xbox is doing these multiplatform releases now

MetroidFREAK21110d ago

Well, I vastly prefer physical versions of games, and I can't do that with my Series S... sooooooo assume what you will

Lexreborn2111d ago

Scalebound was my reasoning for buying and Xbox one. Legit my biggest let down last gen

raWfodog110d ago

Same here. That was going to be the game I'd buy a Xbox One for back in the day. It'd be good if they did revive it and improve on what they had at the time.

Chocoburger111d ago

Seems odd to be asking for it now that he left Platinum Games. He'll be busy with Okami 2 for a number of years, does he expect to develop the game at Clovers studio now? Would they be picking up where they left off, or starting over again? Any of the previous team members, or just him?

I doubt Phil would fund it again, but if so, then that would be good news, also fund a new Banjo as well as Conker games while you're at it. I miss Conker!

Michiel1989111d ago

doesn't seem odd at all, he'd want work and that game even though it suffered some bad press with the cancellation and stuff is still something that people want to see (i think)

Canceled Video Games That Still Hurt The Most

The cancellation of Rainbow Six Patriots, Alice Asylum, and Scalebound, among others, have hit players and fans like a truck over time.

Chocoburger336d ago

Advent Rising was planned to be a trilogy, and we never got parts 2 and 3.

Also wish THPS 10 was never canceled back in 2008. They were releasing the games at too fast a pace and just needed to slow it down instead of abandon the series entirely to make endless Guitar Hero games.

Stupid Activision executives.

RaidenBlack334d ago

My biggest "disappointment" for me, will always be Kojima's original MGS Rising from E3 2010.
The reveal trailer will always top my Gaming Expo highlights list, followed by MGS5 Ground Zeroes reveal at PAX 2013 and God of War reveal at E3 2016.
It looked soo good and cool. My heart sank when the whole Platinum's Revengeance thing got announced.
My 2nd disappointment is another Kojima, the Silent Hills.
3rd is tie b/w Rainbow 6: Patriots and the original Ghost Recon Future Soldier 2010 version.
4th is Unreal Tournament 4/2014
5th is Half Life Return to Ravenholm
(Dis)Honorable mentions: Delta Force Angel Falls, Brothers in Arms: Furious 4, Fallout Van Buren, Capcom's Deep Down, Original Duke Nukem Forever 2001 version, Prey 2, Command & Conquer: Generals 2, Timesplitters 4, Alice: Asylum, Mercenaries 3, KOTOR3, Star Wars 1313, StarCraft: Ghost, Legacy of Kain: Dead Sun, Whore of the Orient, Fable Legends, Star Wars Project Ragtag and maybe Agent?
Half Life 2 Episode 3 should top my list, but I still believe it'll happen. You know what might break the gaming internet and steal some of GTA 6's thunder? If Valve just posts '3' in any of their social account.

Chocoburger334d ago

I love Rising Revengeance, but I would have loved to see MGS: Rising, where we got to see Raiden's body destroyed at Area 51, and play some portions of MGS 4 from Raiden's perspective.

Good pick.

rlow1334d ago

Did you see play Advent Rising? If so, what did you think of it?

Chocoburger334d ago

Yes I played it long ago. Its kind of like Mass Effect, years before Mass Effect. You have to make choices which permanently affects the story.

Near the end of the game you have a bunch of super power abilities, I remember a shockwave stomp attack which wrecked enemies.

It was rushed out unpolished, so it had a lot of framerate issues, but I did end up having fun with it. Been over 15 years since I played it, so my memory is fuzzy, but I do remember I was looking forward to a sequel which never came.

XiNatsuDragnel336d ago

We need scalebound, Alice asylum, rainbow 6 patriots, battlefront 3, and half life episode 3 plz 🙏 if not official devs, fans make those games a reality do what cd project red dev said I have to look up the article but if something can't happen themselves then it's up to the fans to make it ourselves.

Relientk77335d ago

I played Alice: Madness Returns a couple years ago and it blew me away. What an amazing game and it still holds up. When EA said no to Alice Asylum I was so mad. EA also said something like "Alice is an important IP to us" Yeah, right an important IP that you do nothing with. License it out so we can get that 3rd game from American McGee.

INMATEofARKHAM335d ago

Interesting and pretty solid list but I would day it's Star Wars 1313 that hurts the most in terms of Star War games.

DaReapa335d ago

Honorable mentions go to Eight Days, Agent, and Whore of the Orient to name a few.

Deeeeznuuuts334d ago

All of them! But none more than Agent for me, how good a rockstar espionage game could have been! 😭
