Will Xbox Scorpio and PS4 Neo Drive You to PC Gaming?

With the much more powerful Xbox Scorpio set for 2017 and Sony’s PlayStation 4 Neo looming somewhere on the horizon, are more gamers now considering PC?

None of those games are on XBOX ONE. It stands to reason that many XBOX ONE consumers will be driven towards PC gaming.

There was a post on Neogaf where a retailer was reporting that a lot of people have been trading in their XBOX ONEs, with intentions to build a gaming PCs instead.

Let me know when you buy a decent pc for $600 or less. PC games are way easier to hack. You also have to worry about settings, viruses, drivers, updates, or a big bulky pc under your living room tv. You guys already said the Xbox One was too big so they made a slim version. But now the bulky pc is ok? Kids don't want to deal with PC settings either. Plug and play is the point. I hate gaming on a pc personally. Neogaf exaggerates...it probably was 3 people who traded in their X1 with "intentions". They'll probably end up get a Scorpio.

I can see some people who prefer to play on PC but had an Xbox One for all exclusives completely moving to PC. But I don't see how that applies to PS4 NEO. I also think most people who own a console have a console because they prefer console. PC gaming has always been better than consoles in almost every way. Xbox Exclusives moving to PC isn't going to change much.

I like that i'll be able to play my Xbox games on PC when I feel like sitting at a desk or when I'm on the road on my gaming laptop and playing on Xbox on the couch when I'm lazy. The fact that I only need to pay once for my game is awesome.

Microtransactions do have something to do with Neo/Scorpio because the overall complaint is that companies are greedy, they keep trying to extract too much money, don't give enough value, etc etc.

So here we are with two mid-gen consoles that don't give as much of an upgrade as a normal console launch, and yet it seems like everybody can't wait to spend money on them, and few see it as a cash grab.

If you bought both PS4 + Neo, it will cost you $800 this gen, that's more than the most expensive PS3 model. XB1 will end up costing more than that.

If I was a big fan of certain former XB exclusives I'd build or buy a PC to play them, so there's your answer for Scorpio. I don't feel any need for a 4K tv so there's your answer for Neo. Neither of those answers has anything to do with accepting the new consoles. I simply don't see a need for them, for different reasons.

Your microtransaction question is too broad. What am I buying? How much does it cost? What game is it for? It's always a case by case decision, but people obviously support microtransactions in $60 games because they've been around for a long time now.

By going to pc you'll enter the platform that does a lot of upgrading so I don't see what's the point. Consoles will still be the simplest to use. Plug and play isn't going anywhere so I doubt people will abandon it.

False, I see people try and use this arguement a lot but, my 4 yo mid range PC still holds up today at 1080p. I plan to upgrade the graphics card next month though, and that would be my first upgrade since I first built it.

You cant argure that new PC parts are developed and released very frequently, meaning that a person can upgrade just as often as the new parts come out should they choose to. Just because you specifically don't upgrade your PC very often doesn't mean nobody else does. Also I'm willing to bet you spent more than $400 on building your PC.

Ehhhh the point of Microsofts direction was to learn to lock it down. Pcs are always known as "open" and that is why console gaming is liked by developers....
Steam, ea, Ubisoft are trying to lock down. Microsofts Windows 10 is more locked down, but Microsoft would prefer people go to pc so that they do not have to do what they are bad at, bulging things.

it goes both ways. Consoles taking on more PC hardware while PC's are getting more console style. Alienware with their steam machine and even the raspberry pi's getting put inside almost anything. Though a raspberry pi is more for emulation than a full size PC.

Let me know when consoles can run big programs like Pro Tools 12 or Adobe Premiere. Or when you can connect a external blue ray burner, printer, or midi interface. That's what a pc can do. The advantage consoles have over pc is that they're more optimized and coded to the metal. So it would take a more expensive pc to perform as well as a cheaper console because consoles don't have the same bottlenecks and heavy OS. Batman Arkham Knight is a prime example of consoles playing a game better than pc. Consoles are so much more efficient and cheaper.

I will still buy the Neo, but thinking about building a PC for Xbox games.. That RX480 for $200 coupled with a Zen should be some nice bang for the buck and I won't have to wait a year for the Scorpio which this machine should outperform..

That said I'm still not sure that's the route I want to go, and if Microsoft designs a nice looking box that is small and looks nice on the entertainment center than I will still get a Scorpio.

That card should serve you well. If you could push the boat out a bit more I'd say go for the gtx 1070 but honestly, you'll be perfectly fine with the 480 if that's what you choose.

I agree with everything you said, but there's a bit more to it. Let me ask you this: What if Scorpio does act as a full-fledged computer (I.E. It can play all PC games, acts as a Steam machine in addition to an Xbox, whatever)? Will that push you to PC gaming?

Reason I ask is that if Scorpio can use PC software, then technically Scorpio would be driving console owners to play PC Games. Just not on a PC. I find it interesting that MS didn't talk about which VR headsets would be supported on Scorpio, but they did mention multiple VR headset compatibility. We all assume Rift will be one of them, but don't different VR headsets work differently, have different exclusive games, etc.? Wouldn't it be more difficult to program one VR game to work with multiple headsets?

I think it supports the theory that PC Games run on Scorpio. Let's not forget the possibility that they are working on a partnership with Valve to deliver content to the Xbox One family through the UWP as well. Anyways, it obviously hasn't been confirmed in any way, but it is plausable at this point that Scorpio will be a full-fledged PC and I welcome any new info about Scorpio to clear up some of the mystery currently surrounding it.

no because i love the utility and convenience of a console. I respect pc gaming but its too much for me and I'm comfortable with myself so i don't need to prove anything to anyone or the have the desire to constantly upgrade my rig. these days i'm a no fuss kind of guy.

i do appreciate good graphics though and i have a 4k tv with not nearly enough 4k device support. I'd pay a little more for an upgraded console. in fact the xbox scorpio and ps4 neo are similar to what i said i would want before i even knew about them.

Not like PC is more convenient. I mean, I can browse and play a game at the same time, boot up in 5-10 seconds with load times that are non existent feels pretty convenient. I haven't upgraded in 4 years, and will only upgrade the GPU next month, and I haven't had a single issue with the build, and most of my other builds have had little to no issue.
Don't expect much 4k. Either it is gonna be up-scaled or lowered graphics at 30fps.

For me it's not about the money. It's I just want a box that I buy, plug a cable into my tv and turn on and play games. I don't care how "easy, user friendly, powerful, etc" you can make a PC these days it just doesn't interest me to fool with it. I haven't had a computer for probably 7 years now. Anything I need a computer for I can perform on my phone.

Sony has some of the best exclusives in the market and I will continue to buy their main consoles as well. And your not going to play those on PC so...there's that.

It's possible to do that with pc too. You can just buy an off the shelf gaming rig or pick your parts and have the site build it for you. Then just plug into TV. However form factor does come in to it and consoles generally win out in that case :p

Nah, The exclusives are what keep me console faithful. Although Microsoft may be bringing most of their console exclusives to PC's, its the fact for 1 those exclusives were born on their machines and tailored to their machines which make me not have to worry about constantly buying Graphic cards and such to try to keep up as far as building a PC.

I just want Sony and Microsoft to do right by the gamers! I'm harsh on Microsoft because sometime I worry about their true intent when it comes to something I love! And how their action may affect the gaming industry as a whole. Sure all the console makers have made mistakes in the past, but when it comes to Microsofts money I think they are more influential than the others! Scorpio will push me to PC gaming. But not PS4 Neo because Sony still has many great exclusives that won't be found on PC. You might as well buy a gaming PC, so you don't have to continuously pay for Xbox Live. Plus the games on PC are cheaper most times and a PC can be upgraded and used for more than just gaming. The Xbox ecosystem, on the other hand, doesn't have much that interest me personally, and for the pretty few games I actually want to play (Cuphead, Ori and the Blind Forest, Quantum Break), I'd rather build a gaming PC than buy any Xbox. I would get far more use from a new PC anyway, because it's not restricted to gaming.

I wouldn't say that Xbox Scorpio drove me to PC gaming if that happened, though. More like, Microsoft's decision to make Xbox games also available on PC drove me to that.

It sure seems that way. I'm still of the wait and see, but if consoles are doing away with "generations" and plan on bringing a latest and greatest every 2 1/2 - 3 years I'll just jump into PC gaming and upgrade when I'm ready.

The comments made from the xbox executive about the possibility of them making Scorpio only games felt like a bit of a slap to the face.

Also if both console manufacturers are planning on doing this it will make it nearly impossible for myself to upgrade both consoles as often as they may release them. And force me to back just one of them. Trying to explain to my wife almost every year and a half I need to drop 400 or 500 dollars on another console.......yea right.

Sorry, but PlayStation 1st party exclusives will always be on PlayStation platforms! In fact PS Now allowes games from the PlayStation library to be playable on PC's, TV's and Phones, but these are PS2 and PS3 games.

a few exclusives is not worth purchasing $400-$500 bricks that are so restrictive. When i can build my own PC. not pay to play online. Get access too more games and genres that are very rarely seen on consoles. most of the time modern consoles just support the basic genre and games that barely scratches the service. on PC there are a multitude of genres unlike on consoles where majority games usually fall under 1 or 2 maybe 3 categories. (unlike what the console peasants like to push that PC only has MOBAs and stupid nerd games).

It comes down to personal preference. It also depends on how much PS4 N/Xbox S will cost when they are released. It takes about 800-1000$ to build nice gaming PC these days so the price would have to be up there. Being able to play games maxed out is nice but buying them for 5-10$ on Steam is even better. Still consoles have exclusives and they are convenient so the final price will influence most peoples decisions.

360 and PS4 drove me to PC gaming. The drought with a new console gen was too long and 360 dragged on forever. The games started running terribly. The only exciting thing for me was PC and now I'm hooked.
