Digital Foundry: Hands-On with Project Cars

EG - Thanks to a recent Bandai Namco event, the latest console build of Project Cars is up for analysis ahead of its (still rather uncertain) mid-May launch. Until now, delays upon delays have denied PlayStation 4 and Xbox One owners a firm grasp on what this PC-borne title brings to the racing sim space. Slightly Mad Studios' work is a technical tour-de-force on PC of course - a brutal stress-test for any GPU when maxed out - but on current evidence the results on console are mixed.

to sum it up for those that like to not read... PS4 clears it by a mile over the X1... X1 hits lows of high 20s the PS4 lows of 30...but that's with 44 cars and weather effects

recommend a 30FPS cap

A summary with phrases directly taken from Digital Foundry's article:

"[...] now we see just an internal 1600x900 frame-buffer in effect on Xbox One. Image quality does suffer in this case [...]"

"Meanwhile, PS4 goes all-out with a pure 1080p output"

"Microsoft's console puts in a result that lingers around the 30fps line, with its lowest read-out at 24fps"

"Meanwhile, PS4 has a rocky time with an output closer to 40fps (though it still wavers up and down), and a minimum rate of 30fps".

"We have a clear victor during these stress-tests, and it's fair to say that the PS4 edition does feel smoother in practice".

Volkama3297d ago

And to think Slightly Mad promised 1080p60 for both consoles months ago. The smell of BS has been strong ever since.

OB1Biker3297d ago

'An early frame-rate analysis of Project Cars on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Its 60fps target is achievable, but pushing the AI car count up to 44 and engaging weather effects drags both consoles down to 40fps and lower - with PS4 often ahead.'

frostypants3297d ago (Edited 3297d ago )

The images really are significantly different. The anti-aliasing on the One version is terrible.

RocketScienceLvlStuf3297d ago

PS4 has a 50% higher resolution AND much higher performance AND includes more graphical effects than the xbone version.

The gap is finally starting to close people /s

Lord-Nicon3295d ago

And yet tears and has heavy framerate drops, 50% my ass

gameboy13295d ago (Edited 3295d ago )

If you look at my comments i did say that the wiiu version would be better off at a steady 30fps at 720p native upscaled to 1080p ect....now the ps4 and xbox1 seem to have framerates all over the place it looks like i was right ?? every game on ps4 is 30fps i didn't expect a locked 60fps no chance,if anything WiiU will have the most stable frame rate...

Any Tudor said over a year ago wiiu will be at least 720p native at a locked 30fps....

mad-dog3297d ago (Edited 3297d ago )

Well if you got the two consoles, i'd say: go for the PS4 version.

Ofcourse, if you have a decent pc, go for that.

The pixel crawling on the XboxOne version is distracting, imo.
Who is driving that car in the rain, haha? Or is it impossible to keep a car on track during rain?

i think the physics look off. Or he is driving with his eyes closed and with one hand.

StrayaKNT3297d ago

Not when you have a thrustmaster. In that case it's the x1 version anyday of the week. Although I'll be waiting for reviews first because after playing forza it will be really hard to play something Thats not on the same level.

mad-dog3297d ago (Edited 3297d ago )

yeah that might be a good reason.
And, this is not the final build. So maybe the framerate on the XboxOne might improve.

kraenk123297d ago

The game always was more realistic than Forza. Forza 5 is a joke compared to this, we'll see about Forza 6.

MRMagoo1233297d ago

Yeh who cares if the game can't hold 30 fps as long as you have a steering wheel the slide show on the xbone would be worth it /massivesarcasm

StrayaKNT3297d ago

@kraenk12
Lmao so you have played both have you? Doubt it. Forza 5 is the best sim racer ou. Forza is the highest rated racing franchise nothing you can say is going to change that dude.

@mrmagoo
You must have hated bloodborne then because that game was always dipping in between 15-25 fps. And don't bother arguing I had and experienced it first hand.

Spotie3297d ago

@Aussie: You are probably the one person- so far- that's made the least use of your new bubbles.

A nice accessory isn't going to make huge framerate dips better. I mean... it just won't.

As for Forza 5 being better or worse, that remains to be seen, on a simulator level. I think it's ironic that you accuse someone else of not having played both games, when you've only played one, yourself. Furthermore, your fanatical obsession with Xbox means your opinion is nowhere near unbiased, and thus should be taken with a grain of salt, at best.

Finally, there's the outright lie about Bloodborne, pretty much showing just how untrustworthy you are. "Don't bother arguing," you say, as if you're some figure of authority on the subject, while your previous comments clearly show the opposite to be true.

Ps4 looks better than x1 as expected, but I'm not feeling this game

higgins783297d ago

Yes, under a microscope, side by side. Don't get me wrong, I own a PS4 - bought at launch, but this 'better' business is only in a lab environment. As pointed out in the hands-on, both versions suffer on all levels visually and performance wise.

mad-dog3297d ago

i'm sorry but you don't need a microscope to see the difference in jaggies. The first thing that really jumps to the eye are the crawling pixels in the white line in the window in the XboxOne version. Hopefully they can fix a bit of that in the final version.

The performance is more important, i agree. And i also can agree that we can become overly nitpicky.

Anyway, Game is probably a best match for PC anyway.

MRMagoo1233297d ago

The ps4 doesn't drop below 30 fps the xbone version does often , the difference is massive , especially considering the ps4 is native 1080p and the xbone is 900p. If you need a microscope to notice drops of frames below 30 you need your eyes seen by a doctor.

Spotie3297d ago

Trying too hard there, higgins. Framerate dips into the 20s would definitely be noticeable, even if NOT side by side. And since the PS4 version doesn't do that, well...

And the difference in resolution will be even MORE apparent because of that, rather than less.

Alright now. Head on back to the Nintendo articles.

higgins783297d ago

Inconsistent framerate, tearing, sub 1080p, yes, no wonder everybody tears into the WiiU at every opportunity for not being 'next gen'.

BiggerBoss3297d ago

Thats a pretty bitter comment. I wonder, If the Wii U version was being analyzed as well, do you really think it would perform as well as the ps4 version? Or even the XB1 version for that matter? I would be pretty surprised if it did

higgins783297d ago

By "as well as the PS4 version" do you mean all the performance and visual mishaps stated in said hands-on? For me, if that is 'next gen' I'll be happy sticking with games such as Mario Kart 8 which perform within their means and as such leave us with polished performance and visuals running side by side in harmony.

BiggerBoss3297d ago

No, by "as well as the Ps4 version" i mean "as well as the Ps4 version". Do you think that the game will run at a higher res or fps than the Ps4 or Xbox One? The answer is likely no. And I dont know what Mario Kart has to do with this, I could have sworn we were talking about Project Cars

Lord-Nicon3297d ago

both consoles tears, heavy drops, one is missing some effects, etc... to sum up, gor for PC

Moldiver3297d ago

Yup. This article pretty much made up my mind. I was going to get it on X1 to play with my friends. But to be honest I find inconsistant frame rates that jump all over the place to be just as bad as low framerates. anything less than 60 FPS is a no go for me, when it comes to sims. sucks for X1, its ok for Ps4 owners if they can live with jumping framerates too, I guess. But I can have GREAT post effects, 4K and 60FPS on my PC. I think I may wait as well, until W10. I could buy it on the W10 store front and have the achievements added to my XBL gamerscore. Plus Im still enjoying FM5 which runs at a proper 60FPS and has fantastic car handling, that wont lose input responsiveness due to too much going on. And I have FH2 for my other racing needs. FM6 will be a better game on X1 than Pcars is on either console. In the meantime. My copy of Pcars will be PC bound :)

So while im disappointed that I wont be playing this with my X1 buddies. I can get over it by playing it at 60FPS in 4K with effects turned up beyond the console versions. And I still have forza to play with my X1 buddies. No loss here, for me, to be totally honest.

Depends on your PC. As always.

Why did EA Kill Project CARS?

This video explains why we think Electronic Arts didn't see a future in the sim racing title Project CARS and promptly cancelled the fourth instalment.

Jin_Sakai532d ago

After the last installment I’d say most hardcore fans left. It’s just not that good anymore so I can’t really blame EA this time.

masterfox531d ago

because it was always a project and it never got finished :D

ChubbyBlade530d ago

Every game is a project. Your joke doesn’t make sense

InUrFoxHole529d ago

It makes perfect sense. It's obviously a play on the title. Jesus christ you must be a blast at parties.

ApocalypseShadow531d ago (Edited 531d ago )

Ask Bullfrog or Black Box or Tiburon or Studio 33 or Criterion or any of the previously acquired developers who made racing games as competition, or as developers of EA games, then eventually dissolved into oblivion or reassigned. Just ask them. They'll tell you why.

ApocalypseShadow530d ago

Oh. I forgot. Even Code Masters were absorbed into Criterion. Another racing developer EA took over.

Every racing developer either absorbed by EA or eventually destroyed by them. They either kill competition or have them in the end make Need 4 Speed for them.

MadLad530d ago

EA only cancels projects for one reason.
They didn't see enough money in it.

Kombatologist530d ago (Edited 530d ago )

Not when it's because it didn't meet some crazy margin. It's like if something doesn't make EA a billion dollars on day one (I'm exaggerating that figure of course), they swiftly put it out to pasture.

SurgicalMenace530d ago (Edited 530d ago )

Much like if you're spending money on what's a bad investment for your desired goals, you'd do away with it, if you're wise. We should try to get away from thinking we know more about business than individuals that have been doing it for decades. Perhaps you could benefit from going into business instead of wasting all of your talents in comment sections. It's clear that you're the missing piece that EA's been looking for.

MadLad529d ago

I've made a good amount of money betting on underdog investments over the years.

EA sets unrealistic expectations of their more niche developers, yet continue to fund absolute blunders like DICE and the Battlefield series year after year.

dumahim530d ago

EA butted in and messed with the formula and act shocked when it doesn't work out.

Original Project CARS creator trying to re-hire EA team

Ian Bell, the founder of Slightly Mad Studios, is aiming to hire former Project CARS employees to work on his upcoming GTR Revival project.

Sgt_Slaughter533d ago

If it's just going to be another sim-cade that doesn't do either one correctly then no thanks.

Project CARS 2 was a step in the right direction but the physics still aren't where they should have been, so what did they do for PC3? Go completely arcade. That killed the franchise.

EA dropping Project CARS

From GI.biz: "EA is dropping Project CARS, GamesIndustry.biz can reveal.

The Slightly Mad Studios-developed series was launched in 2015, with EA confirming today that it has made the decision to "stop further development and investment" in the franchise.

The announcement was made internally and it's unclear at this stage to which extent staff could be affected. EA said that employees working on Project CARS will be moved into "suitable" roles "wherever [they] can.""

Terry_B535d ago

Typical for EA. They buy studios that created nice games..and are sooner or later destroying them and move the people to work on the old same 5+ EA series.

italiangamer535d ago

They will put the developers on the 1000th Need for Speed for the rest of their entire careers, just like Criterion.

SurgicalMenace535d ago

To be fair, it's not EAs fault it falls directly on the consumer. Everytime these companies choose to drop a series they're met with backlash though the gamers didn't support said series enough to justify its continuation. Attempting to paint every company as evil all because they're in it to succeed is ridiculous. They have to make money just like each of us typing in this section. If a job wasn't supporting you well you'd quit and find a new one, this is the same mentality concerning series.

TheColbertinator535d ago

@SurgicalMenace

No it is their fault. They don't listen to fans and burn the franchise to the ground by introducing elements that nobody wanted instead of increasing support for said respected franchises.

I order a steak, they make a steak. 1st sale
I order a steak again, they vomit on my steak and charge me more for it. No sale.

EA in a nutshell.

Tapani534d ago

@TheColbinator Well how do you think they make the billions then?

Their fans ARE buying their games. You are just not their focus group, and I can guarantee their customer insights team is more thorough and detailed in their reaearch than any N4G commentors’ opinion on the matter. Otherwise EA would not exist as a company, and they’d be bankrupt.

deleted535d ago

The one that still hurts the most though was Criterion w the Burnout series. Acquired Criterion's tech for their own existing IP, then shut em down. It's basically parasitic. I sure do miss Burnout's crash mode!

Hofstaderman535d ago

Sounds eerily similar to another large unnamed corporation hey. I believe some EA bigwigs shifted to that company back in the day, would explain the similarities.

rlow1534d ago

Must be talking about Sony

peppeaccardo535d ago

and instead they come out with that piece of shit of Need for Speed which looks like an Anna & Barbera cartoon. C'mon .... PC2 was my go to game for VR racing and the first one i played for tens of hours. i was so lookiing forward to PC4 after that failure of PC3 ... what a shame EA, they are bombing all the good games and stick to the garbage ones. EA when you think you have reached maximum of disappointment they top it off with style .... screw them!

SurgicalMenace535d ago

Need for Speed continues to sell so why would they get rid of what's producing what they need to maintain stability?

EazyC535d ago

What they did to this series was idiotic. The premise was great -- a sim/simcade game that GENUINELY got developed in line with its community. There is a huge gap in the market for this...I mean, PD hasn't listened to fans at all over the last year with regard to simple Gran Turismo 7 tweaks. Sim racing fans are screaming for a title where they actually give a shit about their users.

Project Cars 2 was genuinely on to something, it just needed some refinement. But instead they followed up by selling off to EA with a braindead GRID clone with Project Cars 3. Again...idiotic.

SurgicalMenace535d ago

Well since you're the authority on properly managing a million dollar company, why don't you just call them to let them know of your divine wisdom?

Hardcore sim racers are the ones who are competing acrossed the globe, no company in their right mind would focus on a forever moving casual market. They have to focus on those dedicated to supporting their efforts. Notice how you're speaking from a perspective of self opposed to the collective. Perhaps they sold out because they, like us, needed the money knowing that they could reinvest it into something new. PC was a decent racer but very few people mainlined it over GT or Forza.

EazyC535d ago

I'm not a divine authority but I notice a pattern where these huge corporations turn completely tone deaf of what the "average fan" wants.

vallencer534d ago

Hate to break it to you but project cars 3 was published by Bandai in 2020. EA didn't buy codemasters, which owned slightly mad studios, until 2021. Either way the sales were super poor for the game and it's not surprising EA would just drop the game. BUT it still sucks because it's one less sim racing game on the market. Especially because the first 2 were really good.

Tzuno535d ago

and focuses more on cartoon network games
