Playing Dying Light without the day-one patch is “a different game”, says TechLand

As long as people are willing to pay them en mass day 1 they will continue to release unfinished products. Why spent more time=money on it or lose their release window if we are going to pay them day 1 anyway?

Wait for some reviews and and then decide if you still want to get the game.

To be fair there are some developers who have earned our trust in buying their games day 1.

Dying light's dev is not one of them.

That's explains why I couldn't find any at Best Buy in my area when I got it on Friday. There was 3 copies left for Xbox One but none were on the floor.

This game run silky smooth after the launch day update. I'm getting 60-80 fps all the time @ 1440p. It's awesome.

Ermmmm... what happened to they hundreds of hours of testing they did and bragged about? Surely those hours of testing showed some cracks and should've been dealt with prior to realease And not have a day one patch.

"Hundreds of hours of testing" in corporate language can easily mean 3 people with two weeks until the deadline(3 people * 8 hours a day * 10 working days = 240 man-hours). And they call it "truth".

When the time comes, usually 2-3 or so months before a game goes gold, a big AAA game will have 20-30 testers, working 10-12 hours a day, 6-7 days a week, to put the game through the ringer to find every possible bug there is. I've always said that the devs know about more bugs/glitches with the game than the players will ever see, and that's why.

Anyhow, Even looking at those numbers on the low end, that's almost 10,000 man hours over two months.

That doesn't include the testing that goes on the two years prior which usually consists of 5-10 man teams working regular 40 hour shifts or less, except in times of milestone crunch where they may work some overtime.

Testing doesn't mean anything though if they don't fix the problems. Nowadays, games are so complex it's hard to fix all the problems, and sometimes fixing them makes more problems. At some point a lock is put on code, and ideally the biggest problems are addressed to make the game playable without a patch. But that has changed, and it's more a thing of getting the game done enough to boot up to the update screen.

Those last 2-4 weeks from a game going gold to release can be brutal for some devs as they are trying to fix as many issues as possible for that day one patch. More often than not, that's why you sometimes see those last minute delays of a week or two, although at times, it's sometimes just a issue of manufacturing or distribution, and in a few cases trying not to compete with some other release.

Anyone complaining about downloading the patch is rediculous. Unless you have a really shitty Internet, the patch takes like 10 minutes to finish. Every game has a day one patch so stop pretending this is something new. I swear people get butthurt over the littlest things. The game is great and runs smooth, I ran into like 2 bugs where in Dead Island I'd find a new one everyday BUT I still had a blast playing it.

I was running the game with around 40-50 FPS lowest settings on PC even though i have a GTX750ti i5 CPU after the day one patch the game runs medium settings Constant 60FPS with the newest Nvidia drivers.
