Microsoft Is Going To Have A Hard Time Supporting The 360

Game Informer - Every time there's a new system that comes out, some gamers get nervous that there won't be any good games for the old platform anymore. And why should there be? Console manufacturers like Microsoft and Sony naturally want to migrate people over and spend their resources on the new system. So when a Microsoft executive says that the company plans to support the Xbox 360 for three years, I don't believe it.

There hasn't been much 360 support going on for almost 2 years now.

But still a few games are coming out for it, Like TitanFall & The Next COD.

Ricegum4184d ago

Yeah, I'll pick up Titanfall on it if it proves to be any good, but there really isn't any incentive for me to turn mine back on at the moment.

iGAM3R-VIII4184d ago (Edited 4184d ago )

I think MS are done with the 360 now anyway, I doubt you'll see any more 1st party support. As soon as Forza 5 was announced for X1 only, I knew the 360 wasn't getting any 1st party support. No more Forza for X360 fans. MS should really keep supporting the 360 but I think they are trying to get 360 owners switch

andrewsqual4184d ago

@iGAM3R-VIII Funny, as soon as Kinect was unveiled at E3 2010, I knew Xbox 360 was done http://oi39.tinypic.com/991...

Charybdis4184d ago (Edited 4184d ago )

Titanfall is not really a good reason for me to keep my 360. A far more appealing reason for me to keep the 360 are the free games every month believe this month are sleeping dogs and a lara croft game (much thanks to the ps3 free games program: which this month will have bioshock infinite and DMC)

saladthieves4184d ago

Other than 3rd party support (of course), I'd say Microsoft was done with the 360 the moment they released Kinect. I don't think we'll see any more 1st party studios from now on...only Xbox One.

I understand that the 360 is in its last aging process but it is their best console to date! Some support would be understandable, IMO.

kreate4184d ago

Microsoft doesn't have to support the xbox360.
unless ur oblivious to whats going on, there's nothing to play on the x360.

but since the x1 is out, all those xbox fanboys can go buy a x1. American gaming related companies will fill their offices with multiple x1's and fanboys will buy 1 for the family room, 1 for the bedroom, 1 for themself.

Microsoft didn't support the 360 for the past 2-3 years and x360 outsold its competitors by 35 or so consecutive months. this just proves that Microsoft still got the American market.

xbox doesn't need games to sell. they just need the name 'microsoft' and 'xboxlive' and all will bow.... in America.

SilentNegotiator4184d ago

Microsoft dropping their system like a bag of bricks when their next system releases? Who could have seen that coming other than anyone?

abzdine4184d ago

3 years 260 fans have been treated like garbage, how can things change now when not even X1 is having support?

ShwankyShpanky4183d ago

@kreate: not if the UK and all the Xbones sitting on store shelves across the US are any indication.

Syntax-Error4183d ago

EDGIDEM? Are you brain dead? 360 is MS's best console to date? THEY ONLY HAD ONE OTHER ONE. Are you from another planet? Not counting the new consoles since they have only been on the market for a month. MS has stopped first party support and they only focus on the XBL at the moment.

SonyKong644183d ago

you haven't bought a ps4 yet?

Ps4Console4183d ago (Edited 4183d ago )

I got done with my Xbox 360 6 yrs to be honest it got to bring it's corporation muscular arm into ordinary gaming which I was not happy with .

In the beginning they said it will be all about the games but then decided to turn the Xbox 369 into a Pc & trying to sell you everything I hate about Ms no thank you I went to Sony where I was welcomed with open arms & made great friends online great .

I gave my Xbox 360 to game where I bought games for PS3 & bought a new controller the rest I left in store for when I wanted a new game .

MWong4183d ago

They did the same thing with the original XBox why do you think it would be different with the 360? That's how you can tell when a system is done for them, you won't hear about any new exclusives.

hazardman4183d ago

@abzine

Idk how you got that many agrees..how is it Xbox One has no support?! I understand Xbox360 but if you can enlighten me on your Xbox One theory...

More like 3-4 years, around the time the Kinect came out. It's what caused me to buy a PS3 in 2011, the 360 was like a wasteland exclusive-wise.

It's also the reason why i still have my PS3 next to my PS4 instead of my 360 (360 is packed away).

But it's not the first time MS have done this, they abandoned the OG xbox for the 360 too, but as ive said before so many people have extremely short memories on this website.

unjust754184d ago

It's funny you should say that, I have the same set up. The difference is I sold my 360 to pay for my PS4.

4184d ago
ABizzel14184d ago

@Lukas

Sell it. I would have sold mines as well, but I gave it to my little brother.

GarrusVakarian4184d ago

@Abizzel

I would, but im waiting for the 2nd piece of Bioshock Infinite DLC to release and i still need to play the Mass Effect 3 DLC lol. Im also thinking about buying The Walking Dead season 2 on the 360...but im not sure if it's coming to next gen or not.

Ultraplayerxp4184d ago

Why would you Do that to Your little brother, man?
Lol, I kid. I believe the 360 still has a few games left in it. I'm halfheartedly looking for the cheapest 360 I can find right now because I want to play some of the old and newer exclusives.

Infamous2984184d ago (Edited 4184d ago )

There will be a next gen port for walking dead season 2 , btw why did you blocked me :\ pm me the reason

ABizzel14184d ago

@Ultra

lol. He's only 6, but already a little gamer. I have quite a few downloadable games on my Xbox 360, and PS3. I'd plan on giving him the PS3 once I got my PS4, but seeing how there are still a good amount of games coming in 2014, he can't get it just yet, maybe next year :D.

Cueil4183d ago

you people are just ignorant the reason they stopped support for the Xbox OG was because Intel and NVidia wouldn't discount he chips any further and it was costing them an arm and a let to make the system... the 360 is on it's 9th YEAR

insomnium24183d ago

@cueil

http://tinypic.com/view.php...

smh.....are you really defending THAT?

gcolley4183d ago

People do have a short memory, like when MS acknowledged their failure to support the original xbox, and their refusal to make the same mistake again. Your memory is just as selective as everyone else's on this site. But whatever you fanboys need to say to convince yourselves that any of this really matters.

GarrusVakarian4183d ago (Edited 4183d ago )

@gcolley

"and their refusal to make the same mistake again. "

You mean the exact same mistake they then proceeded to make with the 360? That refusal? Lol at you for actually listening/believing something MS told you.

Dropped OG xbox support for 360, then dropped 360 support to focus on kinect/casuals/X1, even going so far as to cancel 360 projects to make them into X1 games (RYSE and DR3). Facts. It wouldn't surprise me if they did the same with the X1, given their track record.

So yeah, it seems like my memory is fine, unlike yours.

Eonjay4184d ago

Since Halo 4, there hasn't really been too much effort on the part of Microsoft to provide exclusive content to the 360. However, if you remember, Ryse and Dead Rising 3 were both originally supposed to debut on the 360. Microsoft reassigned those to the Xbox One. That seems like a clear indication to me that they have moved on.

Nintendo has done the same thing with Wii. Sony's studios have released a barrage of exclusive titles in the last year. They also have alot of third party exclusives as well (Dragon's Crown, Kingdom Hearts and FFX remasters).

Automatic794184d ago (Edited 4184d ago )

People claim there is no support but as a whole Xbox 360 will get support.

This year they are getting

Recoil in January
Max and Cursed brotherhood in January
Halo Spartan Assault in January
Plants vs Zombies in February
Fable remake in February
Titanfall in March
Warfare ???
World of Tanks ???
Games with Gold
And much more with Xbox live, apps, free movies, documentaries, excellent 3rd party support. It will continue that way. I know I will get disagrees but I am putting the truth out so that we can have a civilized conversation about it.

GarrusVakarian4184d ago (Edited 4184d ago )

Key words being "this year". We are talking about this year, we are talking about support during the past few years, which has been......bad. Especially when compared to the excellent support the PS3 has had.

But yeah, 2014 looks pretty great for the 360 actually. Im surprised.

fattyuk4184d ago

@michaellito

Sorry but your clutching on to straws to prove a point,

the 360 has hardly had a lot in past 2/3 years and that sure ain't changing any time soon!

Ulf4184d ago (Edited 4184d ago )

Project Spark is also slated to come to 360, iirc. I would not at all be surprised if 3rd parties also continued to support the 360 for a few years, just due to the sheer number of them in homes, relative to the newer consoles.

SilentNegotiator4184d ago

So 6 games with release windows and 2 without?

That's your idea of a console getting support? Well someone certainly isn't picky.

Condemnedman4183d ago

50 disagrees!! ha bet I play my 360 more than my ps3 this year

Syntax-Error4183d ago

Those are all 3rd party! They are referring to 1st party support. Did you not notice they said MICROSOFT in the title. maybe you should try comprehending what is written

GamingNerd0134183d ago

Lol is that what u call support ? Please that list is shit and nothing to what Sony has brought to ps3 such as TLOU BTS GOWA GT6 and many more from 2nd and 3rd party as well. Pluse 2014 looks like another year 4 PS3 as the exclisves keep going FFX hd collection tales HD collection tales of xillia 2 TLOU DLC story persona 5 and last KH2.5 hd collection all only on PS3 so yeah I think people r pretty much right about xbox 360 being pretty much dead and having no support from MS. And last what does apps have to do with games huh? Trying to make it sound like apps counts 2 lol. Anyway ur comment doesn't do anything in fact makes it even worse as now u helped people know what a bad year it will be 4 360.

Godmars2904183d ago

How is Games for Gold "support" for the 360 when anything offered on it is likely a title's already been released on it?

MightyNoX4183d ago

Support means by releasing videogame media on it. Games with Gold are games that have been released for 4+ years.

Just wake up from this haze of a dream and admit the 360's support is dead.

Funny thing

I don't recall any other console being out for 8 years without a new model being introduced.

3-4-54184d ago

I'm done with my 360 I think. I had a great time with it but looking bakc, it mostly only offered good sports games and FPS games with a few other gems in the mix.

Original Xbox had a much better and more diverse collection of games to play and they have lost their gaming touch.

Microsoft's gaming department has become TOO corporate always making " Money Decisions" instead of the best long term decision.

I have a PC, 3DS, PSP & soon enough I'll get a Vita, Wii U & PS4 and I'll be all set.

I just can't support them anymore. I have no trust in them. They are weasley sneaky shysters and they know that we know that.

KratosSaveUs4183d ago

PS4+Wii U is the best combo. I'm gonna get a Wii U later this year. And 3DS is awesome too.

Cueil4183d ago

you're bitching about games and you're going to get a Vita?

3-4-54183d ago

A Vita will compliment my game collection well.

How can't you comprehend that?

nypifisel4183d ago

Vita got some great games actually. It's kinda sad it's bombing like it is. You'll be happy with that purchase, if anything just for the joy of being able to play PS1 games on the go cause that is awesome.

Titanfall, Project Spark, Fable Anniversary are not too bad for a console in its 9th year

TheGrimReaper00114183d ago

sure, but if you see what came out on ps3
new ip's;
- the last of us
- beyond two souls
- ni no kuni
continuation of popular franchises:
- GT6
- sly cooper 4
- God of War Ascension

Not to mention, titanfall will be (from what i heared) a lesser version on XB360 (in terms of content) and will be on XB1 and PC, same with project spark (and free-to-play apperently?)
And Fable Anniversary is just fable 1 in hd

DiRtY4183d ago

So you compare games for the year 2014 for a console that launched in 2005 with games for the year 2013 for a console that launched in 2006 / 2007... And then you say: LOOK AT THE MUCH BETTER SUPPORT! -.-

frostypants4184d ago (Edited 4184d ago )

Yeah, the writing is on the wall...MS is doing what they did to the original Xbox all over again. Near total abandonment. What's weird to me is that even the 3rd party devs seem to dry up.

There's still Titanfall I suppose. After I play that to death though, I'm probably selling all of my 360 stuff.

DevilishSix4183d ago

What was the last first party published game on 360? Was it judgement that is coming up on a year ago? Ms did this with the original xbox when the 360 came out. The difference is this time there are to many 360 owners to kill it off in a year, but first party AAA titles are probably over. Funny thing is they have no problem selling you one even without support. PS3 has had a ton of first party support. The FACT is Sony treats its gamers right. MS not so much and its been proven so don't deny.

Kavorklestein4183d ago

I personally think, both MS AND Sony should lower the prices on their old systems to $99.99 for ones with good hdd's and the 360 and PS3 games should be $39.99 for a brand new title, THEN you could say gamers were getting treated right.

zerocrossing4184d ago (Edited 4184d ago )

Going by how fast MS dropped the OG Xbox after launching the 360, I wouldn't be so sure.

Also, not everyone can afford to live in Microsofts future right now.

@Chrisgamerguy

True, and we can all be thankful for that.

Although MS could surely reduce the price to match that of the PS4, if they would just allow consumers the choice to purchase the console without the Kinect 2 bundled with it.

Chrisgamerguy4184d ago

Well at least its not $600 like the ps3 was at launch

Bathyj4184d ago

He has a point. If you like Xbox better to get it now before they drop support in 4 years before they move onto their next console which I guess will be called Xbox Two?

LeCreuset4184d ago

I can afford it. I bought an original 60 GB PS3. It's just that I realize MS has fallen back to talking about the future because they can't sell me on the now.

Death4184d ago

Microsoft dropped support for the original Xbox due to the way they structured their contracts with hardware suppliers. The biggest issue was nvidea and the GPU in the Xbox. Microsoft did not have the hardware experience to require component costs be adjusted over time. Nvidea refused to lower GPU prices late in the consoles life cycle as the retail price came down. This caused very significant losses in the Xbox division.

The Xbox 360 was introduced early and Microsoft partnered with AMD for their GPU that came with a much friendlier contract for console manufacturers that scaled over time. The biggest problem they had going into the new console generation was profitability. To justify its existence they needed the new Xbox to be profitable which wasn't going to be easy. Their first outing resulted in massive losses due to low market share, high manufacturing costs, and too much overhead expense. In 2008 the U.S. was hit with a very bad recession. Something needed to change to offset the new challenges the recession brought. Unfortunately Microsoft shut down internal studios, reduced staff in others and also cut down on marketing personnel.

As the console generation started to wind down Microsoft started preparations to release their next generation console. The Xbox 360 gained much market share and brought profitability to the gaming division. This allowed Microsoft to invest in first party studios. In 2010 new studio creation started with Microsoft really ramping up efforts to expand both studio acquisitions and increasing personnel in 2012.

With the release of the new Xbox One in 2013, Microsoft announced they we're investing over 1 billion dollars on exclusive Xbox One game development.

JasonKCK4184d ago (Edited 4184d ago )

MS will support the 360 for another 3 or 4 years. At the same time Sony is pulling the plug on many PS3 games like Resistance. So while the 360's game library continues to grow the PS3's is already beginning to shrink. Eventually all games that require servers on the PS3 will be dropped.

DigitalRaptor4184d ago (Edited 4184d ago )

There's a difference between "support", which is allowing third parties to include 360 releases and keeping the network running for it, and support, which is releasing exclusives, notable games for the system up to and beyond the launch of its next console.

I mean, the 360 had about one non Kinect exclusive a year for the past three years. 2013, it actually only had one exclusive... Gears of War Judgement.
When you compare this to the PS3, that had a treasure trove of exclusives in 2013, it's pretty bad. Especially when they deny 360 owners those exclusives by just releasing them on the new Xbox instead... Sony had every chance to release TLoU on the PS4 and didn't... It was a PS3 game.

I don't see much, if any support for the 360. I'm considering putting mine away outright now.

Mister_Dawg4184d ago

Sony would never have released TLoU on PS4. That was a silly thing to mention.
With 80million+ on the PS3, why the hell would they release a AAA game onto such a tiny install base?

MetaReapre4184d ago

@mister_dawg
What he is saying is that like Microsoft with the xb1, Sony didn't bother to move any ps3 exclusives to be put as ps4 exclusives instead to try to sell the console. I agree with what nabbic said. Microsoft kinda screwed their fans by doing that.

SoulSercher6204184d ago

Xbox One the future? Thanks for the laugh I needed that.

MetaReapre4184d ago

I'd just like to say that I've had a chance with the xb1 as my best friend bought it instead of the ps4 (I bought the ps4 over the xb1) and I don't like using the kinect nor the voice controls, and actually neither does my friend and he keeps the kinect unplugged generally. None the less he enjoys the xb1 just as much without the kinect. I'm quite happy with my ps4 myself but dead rising 3 is quite fun as all the dead rising were for me. However I'm not going to buy a xb1 until a price drop comes. Lol but I have to really disagree with your comment xb1 isn't the best. Computer gaming is where its at. Lol (bring it disagrees!)

frostypants4184d ago (Edited 4184d ago )

I'm not spending $500 on a $300 gaming system with $200 of gimmicks and sh*t I already get from my other devices tacked onto it.

T24183d ago

Support was gone long ago. for the one or two games worth playing, it wasn't worth keeping xbl sub... 60 bucks for a year plus 60 to get a game not worth it.
Big difference between that and ps3 with plus, wasnt worth dropping. haven't bought a ps3 game full price since I got plus

Prime1574183d ago

Yeah, I didn't want to trade my ps3 in for my ps4 simply for the amount of ps+ games they were giving.

GarrusVakarian4184d ago

It's quite arguable . The wii reigned without contest . And the ps3 and 360 in the end were fighting elbow to elbow despite the headstart and ridiculous stuff like the outrageous price of the ps3 .

It's obvious MS messed up and fumbled its lead , while Sony shouldnt have messed up so much and lost so much marketshare to MS , to begin with

Prime1574183d ago (Edited 4183d ago )

Sony lost market share for two big reasons:

1) price was much more than it's competitor. I agree, that when you look at the complete package, that the original 360 omitted certain things like a good sized hard drive and wireless adapter..but it worked for them.

2) a year of gaining market share before ps3 came out. Coupled with ps3's price, no one say a reason to get the ps3.

That's why I find this year so interesting. They are releasing at the same time with more similarities than last time. It will be fun to see what happens between the two.

Condemnedman4183d ago

worst selling but constantly sold more copies of games. great logic there

tommygunzII4183d ago

PS3 players have a wider selection of games to choose from. Common sense really.

For example reaching into a bag with 50 games compared to a bag with 10. The bag with 10 will have the same game pulled more times.

Kavorklestein4183d ago (Edited 4183d ago )

@ tommygunzll I get your point, and I agree... to a point. But, just because there are MORE exclusives on PS3, doesn't mean EVERY SINGLE ONE is amazing, and the exclusive games typically aren't even their best sellers. Same goes for XB360.

At least you didn't do the typical PS fanboy thing where they act like every single fucking exclusive is a gem to be treasured, even though only 2 or 3 out of ten exclusive games are even worth touching.

Not saying the 360 is full of gem exclusives either tho... I mean, who actually gave two shits about Gears of War Judgement? LOL

All in all, having exclusives is only as good as the games themselves, not the number of exclusives.

AMD is really building hype around their unique partnership with Microsoft to help and build an advanced and seamless Xbox ecosystem across all Xbox consoles and devices.

I wonder what she meant by "full roadmap of gaming optimized chips" though? Seems ambitious.

Next year´s Xbox Showcase already looks promising and exciting. Here´s hoping they deliver.

VenomUK7h ago

Obscure_Observer said “I wonder what she meant by "full roadmap of gaming optimised chips" though? Seems ambitious.” To me, I interpret this to mean rather than having a couple of X/S products for launch and a handheld there is a longer term plan to release new products with higher specs at timed intervals. I’m speculating of course, but this could mean a spec bump every year or two, so that even if the PS6 or Steam Deck Home is released a year after ‘Xbox’ Microsoft can release an updated model that has a higher spec.

KwietStorm_BLM2h ago

It's X3D chips for console. Everyone knows this. And it's been rumored in the PS6 forever.

Ganif35m ago

Correct.

"Sony's PlayStation 6 reportedly will feature an AMD semi-custom APU with a Zen 5 CPU and UDNA GPU, capable of 4K 120FPS and 8K 60FPS gaming. The console will include X3D cache and advanced AI upscaling technology."

Some odd, deliberate wording, no branding, not 'Xbox consoles, Xbox handhelds' specifically, feels and sounds like they're building towards hardware that anyone can be used or licensed to/by themselves and other manufacturers.

Multiplatform software and hardware 'Xbox/AMD APU'.

Obscure_Observer18h ago

I guess you missed Sarah Bond´s next generation Xbox announcement this week, were she clearly states:

"I´m thrilled to share that we´ve established a strategic multi-year partnership with AMD to co-engineer silicon across a portfolio of devices, including, *our* next generation *Xbox consoles*."

But hey, I don´t think you´re entirely wrong, maybe MS will build their own Xbox consoles while licencing other manufactures to build and sell their own Xbox branded consoles. Who knows

Lightning7714h ago

Probably because the next xbox isn't ready to release yet?

The marketing and rumors seem to be heavy out of no where. The rumor was a 27 release but it maybe it could be 26 new console launch instead.

Who knows.

Eonjay2h ago

There PR is alrways super heavy handed. No one is acutally buying an Xbox as is.
Also it is very early to be talking so much about a next gen console.

Activision Forces Adverts into Call of Duty Black Ops 6 and Warzone Loadouts

With the launch of Call of Duty Season 4, Activision quietly put adverts inside loadouts for Black Ops 6 and Warzone, sparking a backlash in the process.

Putting Ads in a pay-to-play Premium title? Well done Microsoft. Well done /s This is really scummy.

jjb198119d ago

This game will never change because these sweatlords love buying up all the skins and bundles that become obsolete the following year. They're the ones perpetuating Activision's greed.

VenomUK18d ago

If Microsoft introduces adverts into its other games I hope it can do them without disrupting the immersion of the game world. So for example in the new Fable game it would look out of place if there was a billboard advertising Cadillacs.

A far better way to do it would be to have a wizard conjure a 'dream cloud' in front of your character and then in the cloud you can see the Cadillac car and see the text with price and availability and hear a booming sales voice promoting the car. That would work so well as it wouldn't be a billboard and completely, 100%, fit in with your character's adventuring in Albion. Doesn't that sound so much better?!

crazyCoconuts18d ago

@venom, or how about our of 100 farts in Albion, 1 of them has a Cadillac pop out

VenomUK18d ago

@crazyCoconuts That’s undeniably off-beat - but it could really work!

Xbox's first-party handheld has been sidelined

Xbox's handheld ambitions continue unabated, but the focus is shifting towards improving Windows 11 for third-party handhelds — for now. The Xbox Series X 'Melrose' successor is safe, with development continuing at full pace.

Is there really a market for handhelds next to mobile?

Vits21d ago

If they run the same games as the main home console, then yeah, sure.
But if they need specially tailored games just for them? Probably not, unless there isn't a home console for comparison (see Switch).

RaidenBlack20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

I am kinda low-key happy this happened.
Dont want another Series S situation (games to be designed from 4 to 12TF scale and not 10 to 12TF).
Hope PS follows suit as well. Tablet SKU sharing with console for 10th gen, will just continue the cross gen -esque development/design phase/nature.
Want a proper 20+ only TF rasterized next-gen plz (+ frame-gen and the lot).
If anybody wants to continue the cross-gen, the Series S|X, PS5 will remain for that. And Switch 2, if you gotta go even lower in the TF range.

ABizzel120d ago

Yes and No. All of the PC handhelds combined have struggled to sell 7 million units, which would be a flop for any “console”. So the market is extremely niche because of price and target market (the informed hardcore gamer / casuals aren’t picking these up).

These handheld PCs are $500 or more, and offer at best Xbox Series S performance levels, so it’s best for MS specifically to just partner with ASUS, instead of investing millions if not billions.

Sony can make their own with custom AMD hardware due to their partnership, and stronger global brand for hardware. But even then it brings the question, of being a lower resolution PS5, and what does that mean for PS6 cross-gen (likely another generation where the first 3 - 4 years are just upgraded last-gen games).

Kosic20d ago

Imagine a Wii U style console, where the tablet doesn't rely on the console it's self, you download the game on the console under the TV and play in 4k glory, then you can remote play, get some unique game features if using both console and handheld in tandem. Then you can download the games in 720-1080p to play on the go, continue your progress, and continue on the TV when you get back.

Sony could get away with this due to exclusives, and that would be a reason for sales. Look at the portal.

I can picture seeing new hardware having some sort of GPU dock, where the handheld runs 1080p, and the dock has additional hardware to bring in 4k/60 specs.

I do think handheld gaming is going to be a strong future, imagine Nintendo release a new upgraded GPU dock for the Switch 3, every 2 years. More frames, sharper graphics on the same game for an extra £150 for a dock with a built in GPU chip. Console cycles doesn't have to be renewed, just the hardware can be improved by them reselling docks to us again and again with small/yearly upgrades like mobile phones.

GamerRN20d ago

Did you just imply that Sony can make a better stronger handheld than Microsoft? You do realize we are talking about Microsoft, the tech giant, right? If Microsoft can't make one that's cost effective, Sony definitely can't...

Brand and market share means nothing when you are a trillion dollar company

ABizzel119d ago

@GamerRN

It has nothing to do with what company can do it, or what company can spend.

For anyone taking a basic business class there is a term called ROI, and Xbox home consoles are selling at an all time low, meaning their ROI on a handheld is a risk that doesn’t make sense, even if they can afford it. Businesses are there to make money and it doesn’t make sene for MS to invest in a handheld that’s a companion device when their current home consoles they’ve spent 20 years working on are at an all time-low, when they can invest with little risk with what ASUS already has to offer.

This is why Sony can build a better device, because they have less risk involved, meaning they can invest more in their own product, and they already have an exclusive partnership with AMD on creating features and hardware. So in this specific case, YES Sony can built a better handheld, due to custom hardware, customer tools, low level APIs, compared to an off the shelf product running Windows or a Window Xbox kernel =.

I play steam deck primarily... Don't play consoles or mobile. The deck covers it all.

@shadowT

The Switch is a handheld, so will the Switch 2. what are you on about?

Funny to see the alt already damage controlling and having a meltdown with multiple accounts in the comments already.

Sad for MS if true, a dedicated handheld would go down a lot better than a rog ally 2 with an Xbox sticker on it I think.

crazyCoconuts21d ago

It couldn't have succeeded for a number of reasons. Now they've retreated to the Windows front and trying to keep that relevant for gaming. How long before Windows Central realizes there won't be a real console successor to Series X either?

Lightning7720d ago

Except there is. That project is reportedly full speed ahead.

Outside_ofthe_Box20d ago

@Lighting77

So was the handheld until today...

Lightning7720d ago

@outside obviously not since they sidelined it and they wanna see how the Asus does. Are you saying they're gonna cancel the next console?

crazyCoconuts20d ago

@lightning - I'm admittedly trying to box you in here - Do you think the next Xbox console will have Steam on it?

Outside_ofthe_Box20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

@Lightning

Here we go with having to spell everything out.

If I told you yesterday that Xbox was going to sideline the handheld console what would your response have been? Probably something along the lines of "I doubt that since Phil has been talking about it for some time now"

My point is just because they are "full speed" ahead now does not mean that will not change in future. As we have seen with the handheld. Do you understand what I'm trying to say now?

Lightning7720d ago (Edited 20d ago )

Box me in? No you said the same thing you've always been saying for years now. Those are the rumors to have Steam integration.

What about it

If you told me they were gonna cancel it tomorrow it would nothing more than fanboy talking points. I only wait for credible sources not what someone else says.

Also this is the handheld not a full blown new console. The Asus is yet to release and they're waiting to see how that thing does. Critical thinking is my strong suit you should try it some time if you can. But Ok cool well you hang your hat on that I guess. Main New console is gonna get cancelled even though the handheld is a different marketing device than the main the console itself.

__y2jb20d ago

I think there is a 75% chance there will not be another Xbox. There is zero reason to buy one now. No way it can possibly sell more than 10m units after Xbox went third party.

BLow21d ago

That's what they do. Goalposts shift like the wind.

I'm really confused on why they are making a "first party" device and also have a Rog Ally with their sticker on it. Make this make sense. How is their own device going to be any different?

Your console doesn't sell and they expect a handheld to?

RaidenBlack20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

The Rog Ally one is gen agnostic ... as you deciphered, it was to be the updated Rog Ally but just with Xbox branding. PC handheld with some Xbox features.
The handheld Xbox is/was supposed to be sharing the same gen/ecosystem with the next-gen (10th gen) Xbox. Think Series S but handheld ... it'll run the Xbox OS or whatever the next Xbox will run.
...
As for anybody wondering/confused why MS is doing another Xbox console ... coz mainly its the 10th gen of home consoles next, which started wayy back in 1972 for the 1st gen. And MS wanna be part in it, in the 10th anniversary gen of consoles. If they gotta bow out, they can't do that at 9th i.e just before 10th. They wanna stick around till the 10th or the X-th gen and check what the fuss happens.

Outside_ofthe_Box20d ago

Curious as to what excuses the spam was saying. Because prior to this news, the Xbox handheld was used as proof that Xbox is still committed to the hardware space. This handheld being scraped is not a good sign...

20d ago
Outside_ofthe_Box20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

@Spam
You can replace scrapped with pushed back if you like. It's not a good sign either way.

20d ago
1Victor20d ago

asq3= obscured: “ What’s your source on the handheld being scrapped? “
Read the article from Microsoft own website and one of your favorite quotations site when it’s something bad about Sony.
Oh BTW good luck with your next SPAM account.
