Consoles Doomed to Pay High Digital Prices Forever?

Dealspwn writes: For years, PSN and XBLA gamers have been enviously staring at the generous offerings PC gamers can gorge themselves on via sites like Steam, GOG and Green Man Gaming. The ever-increasing number of sites sees regular price war over these digital titles, leaving PC gamers the clear winners for cheap games.

For console gamers, it’s been a very different story as PlayStation and Xbox gamers have been left with one first-party option for a digital game store on their console. With only one option available, this has of course meant that there is no need for competitive prices or discounts bar the odd sale.

So when I heard Amazon.co.uk had opened a beta site selling full PSN titles, I dared to hope that this could lead to games going for a little bit cheaper than the bloated prices we see every time we log onto PSN.

Paying for online is never okay.

thorstein3773d ago

I thought with the new gen systems the prices would have fallen in line with the PC versions. It isn't acceptable to sell a PC game for 75% of the console prices. They should be the same.

thorstein3773d ago

2 disagrees. Apparently it is acceptable to pay more on consoles. I stand corrected. Thanks to both of you for setting me straight.

zeal0us3773d ago (Edited 3773d ago )

I'm not sure why you thought that would happen. The main reason you won't see console and PC priced the same this generation is the same reason for last generation, retailers. Publishers want to avoid confrontation with retailers far as console game prices goes.

The main reason they can get a way with it on PC is because the physical version can't be traded and money from pc games for retailers is miniscule compared to console games. Almost every popular retailer has a very small PC game section compared to their gigantic console game section.

Sadly they will never be the same.

fardan853773d ago

We all wish that the prices of digital games to go down but it's not in our hand.
I don't know much about Steam, XBLive, or miiVers, but I don't mind paying full price on psn since I can download the game on 2 consoles. I can simply share the cost with someone if I think the game doesn't worth the full price. The $60 game is effectively $30 when the cost is split. So with the mentioned method above I believe the cost is probably the lowest in the industry for new games.

Hicken3773d ago

People probably disagreed with your wathinking. Like I did.

As it's now been said many times- and as it's been said for quite some time now- the importance of retail stores as it pertains to the sale of hardware is the reason why you won't see digital as cheap for consoles as for PC.

s45gr323773d ago

But then retailers would lose consumers buying used games

infectedaztec3773d ago

@zealous you couldn't be more right. But 99% offl gamers have only themselves to blame, MS tries to beat the retailers by introducing their original DRM Xbox. I couldn't care less about trade ins but the likes of boogie would rather support gamestop with his money than support the developers.

This is the fruits of your protests n4g, disagree all you like but you are getting what you asked for.

awi59513773d ago (Edited 3773d ago )

Nope console people you shot yourself in the foot letting them sell you things that were free. Now they have been embolden and the only way to stop them is not buy this crap. Unsub from xbox live and PSN in mass as a protest maybe the will give you a discount or something. You see what happend with the first DLC on xbox there was a huge uproar and they dropped the prices some.

MadLad3772d ago

Welcome to closed platforms.
You don't see the deals seen for PC gaming because you don't have access to multiple store-fronts driving competition.
You are locked in with the console manufacturer's store. That's it. There is no real competition so they can, and will, charge a premium the vast majority of the time.

MestreRothN4G3772d ago (Edited 3772d ago )

At the posters above, I'm very very happy with the services PSN+ is providing me for the gigantic fee of 4 USD a month. Not only I won't boycott it, but I've also convinced four friends already to join the outstanding premium service.

Problem?

Good.

HighResHero3772d ago

I gave you an agree , but I also find some of the PC DRM unacceptable.

Nafon3772d ago

You should have worded that "It isn't acceptable to sell a console game for 130% of the PC price."

coopman3003772d ago

The reason why you pay more on console is because of the massive used game market. PC games cant be sold or traded without giving away your whole account. Devs on pc dont have to compete with gamestop cannibalizing the money they could have made from their game.

I know people hated the mere idea of it but the drm policies on xb1 could have led to steam/origin-like game prices and sales. Admittedly they could have made it less constraining by adding an offline mode and things like that. But alas for the foreseeable future we're stuck with high prices on console.

awi59513772d ago (Edited 3772d ago )

@MestreRothN4G

Enjoy your 15 dollar map packs and 10 dollar fees to paint your gun a diffrent color those use to be mods and were free.

You'll see watch when the witcher 3 comes out and all the DLC is free on PC i bet you console players will be paying for it.

@lopez_josue So you didn't read the article then. It's nothing to do with paying for online services.

_QQ_3773d ago (Edited 3773d ago )

I did read it, but i'm just bringing up another point that relates to the topic. I would say paying for online services goes hand in hand with paying more for digital games don't you?

it fits with the topic that Console gamers pay much more for things online related.

Cobberwebb3773d ago

@lopez_josue. Yeah okay, you just may want to make that clearer. But I do however think that £40 a year is not a lot to pay, especially so for PS plus, where you get good games in that subscription. I play games on my 360, PS4, and PC; so I win.

PurpHerbison3772d ago

I feel like PS3 PS+ got good games cause the generation was ending. We will have to see what sort of games the PS4 will get with the subscription. Still don't expect the library to take off til mid 2015 though.

Mister_Dawg3772d ago (Edited 3772d ago )

Do you get free fuel for your car?
Do you get free electricity to use your chuffing 'internet' in the first place?

No you don't.
So stop thinking people owe you something you didn't own in the first place.

You pay your isp to get access. You pay the console providers because servers are not magic and work on fresh air!

Mosiac773773d ago

It's coming it just a matter of time.

kingduqc3772d ago

No, not at all. You will always pay more for console game. At release or after release. The reason why is that it's how sony and microsoft make their money. Every copy sold they claim like 7-10$ off it. We just need to cut the middle man and let console die. It would be just better with 1 big open platform. But that's too hard for the people who love some beloved franchise that are hold up by those same corporation.

Rageanitus3773d ago

It's ok it is the console gamers that brought it to themselves just like all the DLC crap out there.

Just look at how MS tried to do it with Live on PC, yet on consoles they ate it up.

The console market got excited for things like having Bejeweled on xbox arcade like it was revolutionary

Many of the PSN deals still do not beat out the deals found on steam and other etailers.

In more recent news Trine 2 on PS4, fanboys make it such a big deal on how awesome it is and paying FULL price 20$ vs steam sales at $4.

Baka-akaB3773d ago (Edited 3773d ago )

The disagrees are full of it . it is indeed the one area were console gamers can claim no real benefits or advantage .

They could have refused some stuff like dlc gougeing from the beginning and refused to , while still getting benefits from the pc world like patches and extensions done right

s45gr323773d ago

Thank you its the console gamers who should of told the media and the console manufacturers to go kick rocks with their whole dlc patches/updates crap. During the mid nineties to 2003 console games were sold as little as $20.00

_QQ_3773d ago

Make that 1.99$, its 90% off right now.

Seafort3773d ago

Until the high street retailers are no more you will be paying higher prices for digital downloads. The retailers call the shots not MS/Sony or any other publisher.

They can't dictate with PC games as the retailers don't sell many boxed PC copies anymore. This is why digital is so cheap on PC but publishers still try to inflate the prices in their own digital stores.

wolfsaviorzx3773d ago

Only problem is, with PC there is no monopoly. Microsoft basically let developers/publishers fend for themself (which was better in the end). So you aren't forced into Steam/Origin/Uplay etc. (not to mention you can download games directly without any DRM program). With Xbox/Playstation/Nintendo it's all controlled by them so other than competition between themselves they really have no reason to lower prices of games. If Microsoft wanted to win and completely destroy playstation, they could just let any games run on the Xbox and basically make it a Windows-lite machine.

NYC_Gamer3773d ago (Edited 3773d ago )

The digital prices will be high until the console brands no longer depend on retail to sell their hardware

Somebody3773d ago

There was a lot of chain rattling weeks before the next gen console launch. A lot of people suggesting, wishing for, the death of major retailers.

And then the rattling stopped and the retail shops are still in business, evolved even by offering their own digital stores. I guess the bloodbath is postponed until MS and Sony have fully flesh out their own digital stores to withstand the aftermath.

The PC digital scene is pretty lively because of a lot of different stores offering competing prices. What happens when MS and Sony finally got rid of the retailers and have total monopoly of their own respective share of the market with no room for third party distributors?

s45gr323773d ago

Pretty much high prices for games. Is not that retailers need to go away is that there needs to be more digital competition for consoles. That will never happen because the console is fully owned by the corporation in this case Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. These console manufacturers will not allow third party digital stores on their systems.

Should have happened a long time ago. People wanting refunds after 50 hours in game.

fsfsxii21h ago

Pc gamers will take this as an excuse to pirate things

KyRo21h ago

I'm not sure why you're getting disgrees. Whilst not all PC gamers are petty, an awful lot of them are lol

Crows9021h ago

Entirely untrue. Not any more petty than console gamers. The only large difference is console gamers don't have much of a choice.

Michiel198912h ago

Not sure why you're getting agrees. an awful lot of console gamers are overemotional twinks ready to go to war over a plastic box, I'll take being a pc gamer then.

Speaking about overgeneralizing much.

Nooderus3h ago

"X" type of gamer conversations are cringe

qalpha21h ago

Daily reminder that 'TheGamer' is a corporate-generated, anti-gamer, anti-consumer, clickbait web site. They are mostly A.I. generated articles that villainize gamers. They provide nothing positive and actively try to provoke and divide the community through extreme view points and politics. Do not give them any clicks.

Inverno21h ago

Only scumbags? As if people don't play their games on console put in the most amount of hours and return it to GameStop and trade it in for another game. But also how many people are actually do this? And what games have been allowed to be refunded?

DustMan21h ago

You can refund any game you've purchased as long as it hasn't been longer than two weeks, and you've played less than 2 hours. I wish they would change it to 3 hours because some RPG's have so much exposition that you may only get an hour total of complete gameplay. That's my only knock on it. I've refunded plenty of stuff I was just curious to try. I typically stay away from Early Access titles which are the only ones affected by this policy change.

Inverno20h ago

Apparently early access doesn't count, only complete games with a play early preorder bonus.

Gaming4Life198121h ago

I definitely know if I want a refund in 2 hours.

SegaSaturn66912h ago

I never liked refunding anything. Even if a film is bad, i dont want my money back. Sometimes things just aren't for me, and it's not the creator's fault necessarily.

Gaming4Life19817h ago

I feel you and i have never walked out on a bad movie cause I payed my money. I also don't refund games cause I'm a gamer and I know what to buy lol. I think having a digital refund is great.

Microsoft’s Surface and Xbox hardware revenues take a big hit in Q3

Microsoft just posted the third quarter of its 2024 fiscal financial results. The software maker made $61.9 billion in revenue and a net income of $21.9 billion during Q3. Revenue is up 17 percent, and net income has increased by 20 percent.

Xbox content + services up 62% while hardware down 31%... seems about right with the way they tout you don't need the hardware to play. People can play on their phones or smart tv or other means. I don't hardly play on my consoles directly since getting devices like the logitech g-cloud and ps portal. Which is to also say I have been playing more digital than physical because of these devices.

solideagle2d ago

you should apply in MS PR team buddy, I think you will do a great job in my humble opinion :)

Sonic18812d ago

I thought darthv72 and Obscure_Observer already work for Microsoft 🤔

dveio2d ago

MS: "Xbox services and content without AB up 1%, with AB up 62%. Hardware down 31%. In total a loss of 350 mill."

darthv72: "Seems about right."

MS: "Excuse m ..."

darthv72: "I don't hardly play on my consoles directly."

MS:

Lightning771d 20h ago

What he said was facts. How he plays games is no concern of you. Don't get too mad about it.

Cacabunga2d ago

I can tell people like you are an absolute minority..

If service is up means their fans and fanboys accepted this model and subscribed to it. The near future you will see a big decline because the service is saturated.

darthv721d 14h ago

to you it may seem like the minority... but your bubble is shrinking because more and more are following suit. convenience is a hell of a drug and its also why physical sales only amount to 30% of overall game sales. times are changing, you either get with them or you get left behind.

neutralgamer19921d 9h ago

Darth

30% physical sales: yet Phil and xbox division are in a rush go give up on that 30%. they don't have any right to give up any piece of the pie since the control such a little of the pie to begin with

also, the market is clearly speaking that the model Xbox is pushing isn't working right now the keyword being right now. you are right about freedom to play anywhere so i hope they put their games on steam

shinoff21832d ago

But that's been ms for years. When things aren't going their way they try to change the way things are said. For instance console sales are down, they stop telling how many sold instead telling us how many hours spent in halo or headshots. So it makes sense console sales down just say people are playing on more devices then previous. What they won't say is how many xbox players jumped ship to ps5.

Cacabunga2d ago

Hardware sales are so bad that Sony and Nintendo are blowing the sales off the water with their hardware.

If Xbox are losers, others aren’t..
Xbox already tried everything with Xbox live then subscriptions went down so much that they had to find something else. Their fans subscribed then reached saturation rather quickly.

Hardware and exclusive games is where it’s at! Keep gamers excited, announce decent software and people will support you

itsmebryan1d 22h ago

@shin
Well keep it simple Sony 's operating income is down 26% and Microsoft's is up 32%. No MS spin there, just facts. 😉
Cheers

S2Killinit1d 15h ago

MS is after diminishing consoles as a medium. They want to destroy this market because they couldnt win. MS’s vision is to dissolve console gaming.

romulus231d 21h ago

Odd that a company that touts you dont need the hardware to play is already touting another console in the works.

darthv721d 20h ago

They are not reliant on the HW but still want to maintain a presence (no matter how small) is a good thing. It shows commitment to the craft. It reminds me of SNK and how they made games for their own hardware (Neo Geo) while also making them for others because they knew there was a market to do so. They knew they would sell more to others but also sell to their own niche fan base.

TheEroica1d 14h ago (Edited 1d 14h ago )

Perfectly reasonable post down voted by insecure corporation friendly folk.... But not gamers. Real gamer want accessibility and ease of acquisition for all.... Company shills are the only ones still telling us that hardware locking people from games is good for us.

Chevalier1d 9h ago

@Darth

You should stop parroting metrics like an idiot without context.

"Xbox content and services revenue grew 62% in Q3 from a year earlier, “driven by 61 points of net impact” from the purchase of the third-party video game giant, Microsoft said."

61 of the 62% was from their merger so net increase is ONLY 1%

Xbox hardware revenue tanks to lowest point of Xbox Series generation

Profchaos2d ago

I'm not surprised surface is struggling they aren't relevant anymore

DOMination-1d 20h ago

In the last two years they've started exiting the consumer market altogether. All of the newest Surface products are business models only. They can't seem to work out what they want to do with it.

XBManiac2d ago

Too expensive hardware when others offer the same or more for less? Good work, Green Team.

SimpleDad2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

"Despite some early successes for Xbox games on rival platforms, Xbox hardware is down by a massive 31 percent this quarter."
"Without Activision Blizzard, Microsoft’s overall gaming revenue would have actually declined this quarter."
"Xbox content and services would have only been up a single percent without Activision Blizzard..."
"It looks like next quarter is going to be a similar story for gaming at Microsoft, too."

That is crazy... so A/B/K is carrying the whole Xbox gaming.
Oh and Microsoft will be fine. Windows, Office and Cloud are growing with each pc purchase.

purple1012d ago

Activision: "we gonna need a bigger rucksack/backpack please"

Microsoft: "why's that"

Activision: "to carry yo' weak ass'

Profchaos2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Top brass have also wanted to start seeing returns on the 100 billion they have put into various Xbox related moves so seeing more multiplatform games is highly likely especially from abk

It's basically saying that PlayStation is the reason Xbox is afloat right now thinks to Ps5 versions of COD

Kornholic2d ago

So basically PS and PC gamers' money is keeping Xbox on life support.

MrDead1d 20h ago

The only growth MS will get out of the console industry is if it supports it's rivals platforms. Xbox is a pointless machine now. I can see them on a big push for live next, and they won't give up on trying to buy Steam.

Sony Patents To Prevent You From In-Game Harassment By Reading Your Emotions

A new patent recently published by Sony wants to gather biometric data of gamers to track whether one is being harassed using AI tools.

Profchaos3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

I hope this is one of those patents that never comes to fruition.

I already dislike the fact you can pay a significant amount for a online service buy associated games and content on said service and get banned from that service over potentially a misunderstanding the bans are already handed out for flimsy reasons

I'd rather see money invested in a ban that simply removes the offensive players ability to communicate with unknown players allow them to continue party chats with friends but not with Joe blow on cod.

exputers3d ago

Agreed. Blizzard recently banned a college Overwatch 2 player who's dependent for saying "shit." Pretty harsh.

Profchaos2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

How rediculas really. You can't say a word that's allowed in most PG films and prime time TV but the game is based around killing the enemy team using guns, explosives etc.

It's just backwards.

just_looken2d ago

What your talking about is called block list

In 2006 a spaceship dropped of the playstation 3/xbox 360 i say that that generation was the last great gen with game functions/tech that has yet to comeback

Anyhow the playstation 3 if you block listed a id they could not talk to you in chatroom with either text or voice. But that was pre mind fucked 2018 when people were more human than sheep.

But hey gta 6 is coming out billion dollar budget without a single player custom character creator and without singeplayer coop off/online something saints row 1-3 had on the xbox 360.

Popsicle2d ago

Terrible idea. Not only do I not consent to providing my biometric data, the potential for mishandling biometric data is almost a certainty. Positive stress and negative stress can produce similar changes in biometrics. Interpreting the precise emotion a person is feeling is not only invasive but could be easily misconstrued. I hope this never comes to fruition.
