Are Female lead characters in games a deal breaker?

www.ges-sa.co.za

"A lot of people have been talking about the effect a female lead in a game has on the willingness of male gamers to play it. Now when I first heard this I thought nothing of it but then I started to think back on my favourite games over the last decade. None of them had a female lead, I thought that was just a coincidence and that it has nothing to do with the sex of the characters and that there were probably just less games with female leads. I recently picked up the new Tomb Raider which was praised by gamers and some even said it bettered the Uncharted series.

I played it for about an hour and then put it back on the shelf, with no desire to return, but why? The same happened with Remember Me, a great game but I just couldn’t get into it. The reason for this might be that some people try to identify with characters in video games, such as an RPG that lets you customize your appearance; 9/10 times I will make the character look like myself because in a small way it enhances my experience with the game. That’s when I started thinking that because Lara for example was a women I couldn’t identify as much with her character and therefore lost interest in the game, but was this really the case?"

I'm all for supporting South African gaming sites, but this article is a little odd. Ignoring the spelling and grammar errors, the opinion expressed is a little odd. The writer couldn't enjoy Tomb Raider or Remember Me (both being acknowledged as "great" by the author) because of the female characters?
That's simply peculiar.
And how could a lead character's gender be universally a dealbreaker? What of the female gamers who have no choice but to play as dudes in almost every game? It's not a dealbreaker for them, it shouldn't be for you.

Fr0zeBud3878d ago

It's his opinion about female characters, I do not agree with it as I play a lot of games with female characters. Gender of characters do not concern me.

Mr_Bigglesworth3878d ago

I think he gets his point across, he cant relate to the female characters in games, whats not to understand? I agree that women have had to put up with male characters for years and its a good thing that is slowly starting to change. I know people who will always choose a male character when playing games because they prefer it, if left with no choice but a female charecter it might not be as fun for them, hence a deal breaker, interesting article in my opinion.

FortKnight3878d ago

Putting your point across well enough does not instantly make it a good one. By the article's line of reasoning, games with female leads are for girl gamers, and male leads for male gamers. That's patently incorrect. I don't like to criticise articles overly but I feel like this was a bit too anecdotal to be a full column.

Fr0zeBud3878d ago

Good point @FortKnight. I also think people are going to into male and female as of late as I saw there are a few article of people talking about this and because it is no issue for me what gender I'm playing as I also think it is not worth going on about. Thanks for the comments.

just because racism is bad does not mean there are no racists. it does not stop us from talking about racism and racists. just because sexism is bad does not stop us from talking about sexism.

Granted, this is in no way near the ball park of racism and sexism, but is a reality. Most gamers are male, whether immature or not, a greater percentage of that population feel more comfortable playing a character that is the same sex/gender as they are. I was watching a play through of diablo 3 Xbox version on GameSpot the other day, the guys playing it both created female characters and they were ridiculed for that. That's just what the big companies don't want.

for you to be emotionally involved with a character, you have to identify with the character. if you don't identify with it, then the character has no major impact and you are just walking through, it is not an experience.

so whether good or bad, this article is valid, it is a conversation that needs to be had.

My most fun game ever was "primal" on the ps2. it had a lead female character, but that us the only game I have played that has a lead female character. I have tried playing tomb raider and it has never appealed to me. Maybe because the lead is female dunno, but I guess if it were male, i still would not play it.

Thank you Holymsophy, you took the words right out of my mouth, I couldn't agree with you more, I just hope FortKnight reads your comment.

The Best Tomb Raider Games Ranked

We've gone on many adventures with Lara Croft. With another reboot in the making, Wealth of Geeks felt it was a good time to go down the nostalgia rabbit hole and remember the best of those tomb-raiding thrills.

I do agree that Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness was the worse one 😂 I remember playing some of it and I took it back. That game was just awful in every way. I bought it used at gamestop and glad they had that 7 day return policy for used games 😂

Pyrofire9561d ago

Would it be worth saying why?

ZeekQuattro61d ago

Simple. He's been hating on the Tomb Raider reboots for years. I can't imagine seeing them at the top of a best TR game list let alone being on the list in general sitting well with him because of it.

Zeek

“Hating”

No no, just pointing out how TR mutated into a generic action adventure game losing the appeal of what it once was when it was more about puzzles and platforming over going Rambo, slaughtering waves of enemies

But hey, continue being a dick and speaking about me like I’m not going to see the comment.

Foxtrot, I'm curious if you have played the most recent games. Sure the 2013 reboot was hugely focused on combat, but each follow up became less and less about combat to the point where outside of a few large scale story missions I don't even remember combat being a part of shadow of the tomb raider. Shadow was so puzzle focused it actually was a bit much for me and I love the TR puzzles.

I still feel like Rise was the best of the series and I was a huge fan of the originals. To me it struck the perfect balance of exploration, platforming, puzzles, and combat. Not saying your opinion is wrong I'm just curious what you think they should have done different. Games do need to evolve somewhat to stay relevant. Would you prefer small linear jumping platform levels like the original?

RavenWolfx61d ago

I would agree Rise for 1 and the reboot as 2. Shadow is a bit high, though.

Sonic188161d ago (Edited 61d ago )

I think Shadow wasn't even develop by crystal dynamics. I thought it was the worse in the new trilogy

Pyrofire9561d ago

That's right. Shadow was developed by Eidos Montreal who who went and made Marvels Guardians of the Galaxy next. (Great game)
Meanwhile after Rise of the Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics made Marvels Avengers. (bad game)

MeatyUrologist61d ago

Agrees. First two are correct but Shadow should be around 5-6.

terstomp61d ago

For me, Legend should be alot higher (along with the other two ). Shadow, I enjoyed it, but has too much has fluff, as modern games tend to do. Playing the remastered series, and apart from the controls, is very good.

jznrpg61d ago

I really enjoyed the first 2 games, Legend and the first of the reboots and the rest I didn’t get into so I never finished.

robtion61d ago

Completely subjective list. I really liked Underworld, I preferred Lara's design. That said I loved the horror/uncharted feel of the reboot. I think all the TR games have strengths and weaknesses. None are objectively better in every way.
