Analyst: Nintendo 2DS makes sense, admission that 3D was under-used

XMNR: IHS Director and analyst Piers Harding-Rolls sounded off on Nintendo's Wednesday announcement of the cheaper Nintendo 2DS. The new handheld makes sense in his opinion as it is aimed at younger gamers and will help the game company meet its shipment goals for the fiscal year.

Except how are normal people (your average joe) going to realise the 2DS plays games with a massive 3DS logo on the side. I understand a cheaper DS but surely 3DS lite or 3DS Slim or something else are better names than 2DS. This is going to be one hard to market handheld

Wont change a thing , many people dont even understand things like ds lite , DSi , 3dslite , xl and whatever . Doesnt prevent vendors frome explaining things to them for 15-20 mins and parents still buying it like crazy .

Common sense has nothing to do with oddly named handhelds and consumer confusion. There's no "lack of common sense" aspect to a parent going up to the Nintendo system game case in Target and seeing DS XL, 3DS, 3DS XL, and 2DS and being confused.

That said, Baka-akaB is right; it hasn't stopped 3DS from doing well.

Well you can't hate Nintendo for trying. I personally love 3D, all of my TVs and computer monitor is 3D. 3D is a nice feature watching/playing the right content.

it's not even remotely the same thing on 3ds and tires even its fans . unlike and much more so than on a monitor or tv .

In my case two things always pissed me off on 3ds ... region locking and that shoddy 3d that barely anyone uses , yet is an extra cost .

Still it's more interesting for teens and adults to just turn it off over the ugly 2ds.

I see your point, never played the 3Ds for long periods of time. Just an hour or 2 here and there. I purchased it for my nephew who comes over every once and awhile. From what I've played it was pretty cool, but never felt the need to buy one for myself. I guess I'm not the biggest portable gaming fan but if I ever wanted an portable gaming console it would probably be either the 3DS or Nvidia Shield.

Nintendo is trying to recapture the low cost tablet market with a budget 3ds. It needs to compete with low cost kindles and android tablets to stay relevant. Lowering the cost of the 3ds is a good move.

Umm the wise thing to is turn off 3D if you don't like it. I don't see the "value" in this at all. A 3DS that doesn't fold and omits 3D for only 40 dollars cheaper than the original 3DS? OMG this will fail hard and this needs to see Nintendo is doing something completely wrong with this

Removing 3D was a good move since almost nobody used it but come on, the general design could've been much much better... Looks like old school electronic games, but even back then you could fold them and take them away.

I hate the button placement and that it doesn't fold. If this thing had a better design it would also be useful for gamers of any age that isn't interested in 3D, is budget conscious, or has only one functionable eye.

Nintendo really dropped the ball on the design. Apart from that the 2DS is a great idea.

Solution - Don't use the 3D if not wanted.
Instead they made something that was neither a tablet or portable.
