Is Metal Gear Solid Still the Same Franchise?

IGN - With crazier stories and different voices, is this the same franchise one IGN editor fell in love with?

I'm the biggest fan of MGS ever. but I have uneasy feeling about MGSV.

If they keep dragging the story too much, it will lose its magic and quality would decline.

I trust Kojima, but seems like Konami wont let him stop doing MGS games.

Mr_Nuts3993d ago (Edited 3993d ago )

My opinion I feel like he's pushing it with another prequel, I mean the story arc finished in MGS4, we knew everything that had happened, hell it was explained to us in those long cutscenes in MGS4 thanks to Eva and Big Boss.

I really feel like this should of been a hand held game like Peace Walker. I understand Snake Eater being a prequel main numbered game because getting to know Big Boss was important for MGS4.

After this game he has no where else to go. The only options he has are

- Force another Solid Snake story on us despite the lovely ending of MGS4

- Reboot it and let Kojima do something else

- (my favorite idea) reboot it but with an alternative timeline starting from MGS, the shadow mosess incident. If we start with a remake like the RE remake with more areas, bosses, story then do a semi remake with the second game only for Raiden to not be in it and Solidus getting away instead then that changes EVERYTHING in MGS4. Naomi won't be captured by Liquid Ocelot because he'll be dead thus she could work on with the time she has, a way to fix Snakes rapid ageing...and it's their story they can do it.

Best thing about the reboot/remake is that the first one will seem more like a remake giving Kojima more time to do something else, same goes for the semi reboot/remake of the second game without Raiden. It's only the third game in the new timeline that will have to be differn't, that will give Kojima a lot of free time to do new IP's and maybe a ZOE sequel.

PerryCaravello3993d ago (Edited 3993d ago )

The only real alternative is that the original Metal Gear 1/2 (MSX/nintendo/whatever console they were on) games are rebooted, under a different name. MGS5/MGS6/MGS7

Solid Snake will be back, younger and ready to fight his nemesis Big Boss much like the old Metal Gear titles. That's the only path.

Why would they reboot Metal Gear Solid 1/2/4. That makes no sense.

New timeline! Fresh start! Hear hear!

dedicatedtogamers3993d ago

I'm a huge MGS fan too (played every game including the originals and the PSP ones) but to be honest, I don't care about the story this time around.

If the story is cool, sure I'll enjoy it, but what I'm most excited about in MGSV is being able to take all the crazy techniques/weapons/gadgets/tri cks that we're used to and goofing around with them in a sandbox environment. Imagine sneaking into a camp, lacing it with C4, sneaking away, and then blowing everything to smithereens. Imagine CQCing everyone and dragging them into a massive pile in the middle of nowhere (or dumping them into the ocean). I think it'll be crazy fun.

Dno3993d ago

im with you. this is a GAME the story comes second to great gameplay and great games.

Pozzle3993d ago

" im with you. this is a GAME the story comes second to great gameplay and great games."

That's not always the case imo. I love MGS's gameplay, but I enjoy the story a whole lot more. I'd be willing to look past crappy gameplay if the story is worth it, but if they butcher the story I don't think even good gameplay could save it.

Yes IGN one voice actor who was already replaced in MGS4 as BB is changing the whole 25 years history of MGS

Go F*** Off IGN, must be a slow news day

porkChop3993d ago

Dude, Big Boss was like 84 at the time of MGS4. They HAD to change the voice actor. However, Ground Zeroes only takes place 9 days after Peace Walker. Huge difference between the 2 situations, that's why the change in voice actor is now such a problem. Everyone knew Big Boss would need a new voice actor at that age in MGS4 so no one was bothered by it.

FoxHound_3993d ago

I really hope Kojima hits this one out of the park then moves onto other projects he wants to do. Nothing against MGS as I love it, I would just like to see other Kojima games after MGSV.

Gimmemorebubblez3993d ago

I personally think the only reason why their is MGSV is because Konami wants to market the FOX engine, they want it to be as big as the Unreal Enginein the development community, so what better way then to push it with MGSV(That probably also explains the wide variety of platforms)

My understanding is that the "series" is broken into segments that are only peripherally related.

Metal Gear 1-2
Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid 2
Metal Gear Solid 3-4
Metal Gear Rising

...Or something like that.

Luke_fon_Fabre3993d ago

It's more like

Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2, Metal Gear Solid (one set)
Metal Gear Solid (since transitional), Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3 (second set)
Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence, Portable Ops, Metal Gear Solid 4 (third set)
Metal Gear Solid 4 (since transitional), Peace Walker (fourth set)
MGSV seems different from the little gameplay I've seen
then Rising with it's action thing

yesmynameissumo3993d ago (Edited 3993d ago )

We'll know after 5 releases. A voice doesn't make a game fun/good. Sorry.

EDIT: I thought Old Snake sounded like Bale's Batman, so...I'm fine with the change.

SexyGamerDude3993d ago

But when the character doesn't sound the way he did when you were growing up, it gets hard to adjust and relate to him the same. It's like it's a different character.

NatureOfLogic3993d ago (Edited 3993d ago )

Is Metal Gear Solid Still the Same Franchise? NO.

When you stop listening to your fans and start changing too much or change something that don't need changing(Hayter), most games start going down hill(Final Fantasy) especially with the Japanese devs. I still remember how most were crying out for FF change, are you happy?

Shuyin3993d ago (Edited 3993d ago )

Keep crying.
I, for one, will enjoy every goddamn moment of that game while you keep complaining. I was mad too at first but then I rewatched the GDC 2013 trailer and man...those emotions in Snake's face when he watches his motherbase get utterly destroyed...
At that moment I knew it was the right choice. I have rarely seen such good facial mocap and acting in a game.

Now we'll have to see how much the Master Collection will add to those numbers.

Number1TailzFan193d ago

Too bad it was a lazy release. They could've updated the visuals and everything. Missed opportunity.

Stanjara193d ago

...and yet, they couldn't give more respect and effort into the collection.
What a terrible company.

Minute Man 721193d ago (Edited 193d ago )

Are they counting every game?

Edit: they did

Nyxus193d ago

Yes, these are total lifetime sales of the entire series.

ApocalypseShadow193d ago

.... mostly with the help of PlayStation.

Yea I don’t get why they’re allowing old reviews to be posted here. Someone did one on Soul Reaver and I got so excited thinking there was some stealth release of an HD Remaster, but no… it’s just someone who had a slow day posted an old review…

Cacabunga209d ago

I liked the game but for me it felt somehow like a military simulator rather than a proper MGS.. i got bored of that

micdagoat19209d ago

I do wish they would remaster all the soul reavers

micdagoat19209d ago

it was done this morning though

goldwyncq209d ago

The author was in a coma for 9 years and didn't get to play the game when it released.

Chocoburger209d ago

This review arrived just in time for launch. Perfect timing!

RupeeHoarder209d ago

Amazing how bad this game looks already. We keep acting like this gen doesn't feel like an update but I think we're starting to see it.

YourMommySpoils209d ago

Looks better than Starfield, Cyberpunk and most recent games out. Still fine.

RupeeHoarder209d ago

It most certainly does not lol.

andy85209d ago

Have you player Cyberpunk since the first day? It's absolutely stunning now

1nsomniac209d ago

One of the worst games ever made. Absolute overhyped trash!

Snowb420209d ago

The gameplay was great. It was the tacked on open world and repetitive missions that messed the game up.

Shane Kim209d ago

The game started really strong in that hospital, but after a couple of hours I wondered if it was even an mgs game I was playing.

KyRo208d ago

The hospital section was the only bit that felt like a MGS game.

MGS4 was the ending for me. I totally ignore the fact 5 exists. It didn't need to exist tbh
