Digitally Downloaded writes: "For those who don't know who Shafer is, he's the head honcho behind the rather excellent Civilization V, and one of the true advocates for strategy gaming in the industry. After Firaxis and a brief stint at Stardock Corporation, Shafer has decided to go down the indie path and has set up his own studio, with At the Gates to be its first release. Excitingly, along with the expected PC and Mac releases, At the Gates will be ported to the iPad - a platform perfect for strategy games, but so far underserved by the genre."
Jon Shafer’s At the Gates, the new crowdfunded historical strategy game from the designer of Civilization V, aims to give barbarians, specifically the various tribes that helped hasten the demise of the Roman Empire, their due. Is At the Gates your next turn-based strategy obsession or should it be locked up?
It's a game I've really been looking forward to. Reviews seem fairly consistent too - I'll end up checking it out because of the genre alone, hopefully patches will iron out any kinks.
With At The Gates you have to think long term, you can’t take out a bandit camp if you have nothing but barley and a few stones. Stop trying.
At the Gates is a turn-based strategy similar to the Civilization series, but introduces a unique world by incorporating rogue-like elements.
