One & Done: Games Without Sequels - Part Four

Phil at SPC writes, "Welcome to the return of One & Done, an article series on SPC that talks about games that never became franchises. They were literally one and done! Now, the purpose of these articles isn't to beg for sequels, as some of these games don't need them and not every game needs to become a franchise. Instead, we're just exploring and fondly remembering these terrific titles from generations' past and giving them some more time in the old spotlight."

I also remember Cold Fear. Never wound up buying it but I watched some of the walkthrough years later.

Gun could’ve gone on, but RDR was a tough act to follow.

Early years of the following gen had quite a few one-shots. Heavenly Sword, Lair, Haze, Folklore, Stranglehold. Bah gawd Stranglehold had expensive DLC for its day.

This console has so many great games. I'd like to see a sequel to The Last Story.

There's not going to be a sequel to the structure of Super Mario Galaxy 2 though. The only reason we even got SMG2 was because they had plenty of leftover ideas from SMG1 that didn't make it into the game. It's better that we got other structures of 3D Mario later on

crazyaejay2591d ago

Agreed. Mario 3D World is one of the best so hopefully Odyssey lives up to it.

mikeslemonade2591d ago

Galaxy 1 and especially Galaxy 2 are two of the most overrated games ever made.

Deep-throat2591d ago

The console was pathetic to say the least, but the games were great!

Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2
Zelda Skyward Sword
Donkey Kong
Sin & Punishment: Star Successor
Zack & Wiki
Sonic Colours
Xenoblade Chronicles
Tatsunoko vs. Capcom
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
Muramasa: The Demon Blade
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

Super Mario Galaxy is getting a sequel though...Odyssey

Super Mario Galaxy 2 was a one off mainly because they apparently had content left over and instead of it wasting they made another game since they were still in the consoles life. Wouldn't make sense to have a sequel to Galaxy when each new system has brought us a different, brand new main Mario game. I'm glad we got Odyssey over it, it looks great and more open then Galaxy. Once you got to certain point in some levels of Galaxy (star cannon) you couldn't go back so back tracking was limited

darthv722591d ago

Technically it's not a sequel. SMG3 would be a sequel. Mario Odyssey is it's own game and possibly new spin specifically for the switch like Galaxy was for the Wii. If anything, Odyssey is more akin to Sunshine than Galaxy.

-Foxtrot2591d ago (Edited 2591d ago )

Each ones are spiritual sequels

64, Sunshine, Galaxy and Odyssey

crazyaejay2591d ago

New Super Mario Bros. seems to always have sequels (2 on 3DS, one on Wii, and one on Wii U).
Also, Super Mario 3D World is a sequel to Super Mario 3D Land.

So, Galaxy 3 would be cool.

-Foxtrot2591d ago (Edited 2591d ago )

Super Mario 64 didn't

Super Mario Sunshine didn't

Super Mario Galaxy was the only one

Super Mario Odyssey probably won't

Super Mario 3D World and New Super Mario Bros are not main line Mario games...just advanced versions of the handheld games

The 10th Rider2591d ago

Personally I want to see them revisit galaxy and sunshine in the same game. The water gameplay combined with the physics stuff could get pretty dang wacky.

-Foxtrot2591d ago

Super Mario Chronos

Time traveling to past games

You heard it here first :3

-Foxtrot2591d ago

Oh shit man SEE it's just waiting to happen

That and another game with a Dimension jumping element

Missing a lot of games: Red Steel, Zack and Wiki, Little King's Story, Bloom Blox, De Blob, Muramasa, Excitebots/bikes/trucks, Sin and Punishment, Kloana, Battalion Wars, etc . . .

Rebel_Scum2591d ago

Super Mario Galaxy 2 doesn't need a sequel. You could see the ideas drying up when playing through it.

The Top 10 Best Wii Games (Not Published By Nintendo)

The most popular console of this generation is dead. Here are the best 3rd party Wii games you probably didn't play...

PS-Analog4251d ago

Some good games here. Wii owners should pick up a few of these games

guitarded774251d ago

I agree, I haven't played but a couple, but the Wii does have some pretty cool games. When I get a Wii U, I plan on picking up some Wii games I missed out on since it will be backward compatible.

Yodagamer4251d ago (Edited 4251d ago )

I love my wii, it has some really great games, even though alot of them are really really hard to find :(, it seemed like publishers never tried to get their good games out there and then they complained when they didn't sell.

Freakazoid20124251d ago

Yeah I had that problem with Little Kings Story. I would have had to drive for 3 hours for a copy of the game upon release. I live 8 minutes from a Gamestop and still needed to drive 3 hours to get a copy.

Imagine how bad Halo's sales would be if everyone had to drive hours for their copy. That's the only game I had trouble finding

Opoona: was told by several reviewers it was an easy game for kids so I passed.
Zack and Wiki: Sales might have been better if a Capcom rep wasnt on the TV in Gamestop telling people the game was designed for 5 year old kids. No 5 year old could play that game. I got it for my GF and there really was a lot to it.
Dead Space: I dont support games that are just made to cash in and offer little to no quality.

Other than that it is a decent list.I would have included Harvest Moon myself and House of the Dead Overkill

barb_wire4251d ago

Here, I'll save you guys the trouble of skimming through 11 PAGES(!) to see what games made the list.

10 - Opoona
09 - Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon
08 - Klonoa
07 - Trauma Team
06 - Muramasa: The Demon Blade
05 - LostWinds/LostWinds 2: Winter of the Melodias
04 - Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure
03 - Little King's Story
02 - Dead Space: Extraction
01 - Silent Hill: Shattered Memories

Not a bad list overall, personally I didn't care for 'Dead Space' but both 'Klonoa' and 'Muramasa' are definitely worth a playthrough.

Thanks. Those are great games that I will play when I buy my WiiU.
