Borderlands 2: Season Pass Will Not Cover All DLC

The Season Pass for Borderlands 2 was previously announced to let players enjoy access to the first four planned DLC packs for just $30. However, Gearbox has now revealed that the Season Pass will not cover all of the downloadable content.

During a Q&A session with readers on Kotaku, Randy Pitchford from Gearbox said:

"We will have other, non-season-pass related downloadable content (DLC). The additional character, Mechromancer, is one kind of example."

Wow a season pass that only covers some of the DLC. Gaming companies are getting more, and more created with how to make as much money as possible with DLC.

Hey if a publisher sees a way to milk its customers of every last dime they can squeeze out of them they'll do it. Online purchasing has led to a lot of milking of consumers, with on-disc DLC, season passes that are supposed to cover all DLC, season passes that no longer cover all DLC, it's a whole new way of making sure those with disposable income do just that - dispose of their income into the hands of publishers.

Well, I don't know about the DLC for B2, but the DLC for the first was worth every penny as it:

a. added a sizable amount of content to the existing game

b. improved lacking parts to the original game like story (not that it mattered much, but made the experience more interesting, particularly with the humorous writing)

c. didn't screw with what made the game good in the first place.

Oh I wasn't saying it wasn't. Although the first borderlands was a risk so they probably never planned DLC until after seeing it's success (which was much deserved). BL2 you know they planned all the dlc and extra characters from the very beginning knowing the game will sell real well and people will eat the dlc up then ask for seconds. I'm sure they will do a great job of adding content to the game like the first time but still dosen't cover up that they had it all planed and probably made before the games release.

I agree with you on this one. As great as Borderlands may be this approach to DLC totally stinks. I think if you release something called a "season pass" then you should get all the content. You should be rewarded HEAVILY for making such a blind investment with your money.

Not all DLC is bad. There are very few titles I can think of that have put out good DLC / Expansions, but Red Dead Undead Nightmares seems to be a great example. Reasonable price for the amount of content.

Whats the point of a Season pass if it dosen't cover all DLC....see this thing is going to get worse next gen, they'll start to do Season Pass 1, Season Pass 2, Season Pass 3 for example.

I think in my opinion if you buy a Collectors Edition of a game then you should get all DLC free. If people are paying more for a CE then surley you wouldn't mind giviing all DLC and pre orders away free with them.

i agree, it would certainly make collectors editions a more worthwhile purchase too, an art book, metal coin, and useless toys are the usual for 40 extra bones, you'd think they'd come with something better

also at 30 bones, half the price of the full game, youd think that it could cover all the dlc. the four packs better be substantial

Why would you assume the season pass would cover everything? It clearly states it'll cover 4 DLC packs for the price of 3. So logic would say if there's more than 4 DLC packs, they won't be covered.

Just like the Forza season pass. It covered six months of monthly car packs. More car packs came after that. Why should this be any different? If Gearbox wants to make more than 4 for the game, awesome. If you don't like it, don't buy it.

wouldn't be the first time this has happened. the "season pass" for uncharted 3 doesn't cover all of the DLC available for the game, either.

although i do recall the description of the BL2 season pass stating that you get all of the DLC... i'll need to go back and re-read, though.

I think it was a mistake for Gearbox to have called this a 'Season Pass'. Perhaps they should have called it a 'Premium Bundle' or 'Expansion Bundle' or something else along those lines.

The words 'Seasons Pass' tend to make one think that if you have it you therefore have a 'pass' to access all content released within a certain 'season'.

All they have to do is provide what they originally promised the 'Season Pass' will contain; 4 large DLCs. They really have no obligation to provide season pass holders with more than that.

since DLC from GOTY editions are NOT console locked (360). thats how i got the dlc for borderlands 1 :D

It covers the main DLC e.g. Borderlands 1 dlc Claptraps robot revolution; general knoxx (THOSE DLCS).

Be bloody greatful i say. it's $30 and it'll save you probably $20 ISH depending on DLC price

2400 MSP for 3200 MSP MINIMUM worth of DLC.

Usually the borderlands 2 DLC are around 800MSP methinks.

I can understand the disappointment, but think about it: what youre SAVING you can use on the other DLC if you so wish to. Those who dont buy season pass and also buy the DLC; their loss.

It isn't bullshit. There was no season pass the first time around and DLC was $10 IIRC. Now for the sequel, they confirm 4 sets of DLC for $10 each and you can get a season pass for the same price as 3. Money saved. I'm absolutely bewildered as to how someone can see this as a negative.

What's the alternatives? Let's explore.
1. No season pass? That's no good.
2. They announce 5 sets of DLC for the price of 4? Still save $10, but the percentage is less.
3. Only make 4 sets of DLC even if people want more? Why cater to people who don't want to spend money on more DLC than they can afford or are willing to purchase? They're in business for a reason. It's generally viewed as a good idea to provide a product when there's demand.

what about making a complete game instead of cutting bits and pieces out of the game to sell it later, there are few games that actually have true DLC.

Well in regards to future character expansions I can deal with it (having already received my mechromancer DLC code)...but if it includes content such as future packs, then what is the point of the season pass?

Frankly, I think game companies are finding more and more excuses to release DLC that could have definitely been included. If there was content that couldn't have made it into the game based off of timing, they should have delayed the game.

If it wasn't so amazing I would be more pissed...but I skipped most of the original Borderlands DLC until it went on sale and didn't have a problem.

The season pass will cover the 4 main DLC's. There are only 2 others, the Mecromancer class and the gold key, both which were free if you pre-ordered. So if you pre-ordered, the season pass covers all the DLC. There is no bait-n-switch here.
Besides, if there's one company who does us gamers right by DLC it's Gearbox. They proved that with Borderlands 1.

I'm buying the season pass when I get home, It is hard for a second in series game to hold up to the first one, this one does and go further.

BL1 DLC was awesome, cept for moxxie that one was kinda meh, but still it was fun.

I'll be supporting gearbox. They made an amazing series so far.
