Over 90% of gamers do not own a 'next-gen' console

Last generation seen a total over over 160 million consoles sold across the 3 major consoles. That current figure for the ‘next-gen’ is currently sitting at just over 15 million. This means that less than 10% of gamers who owned a Wii, PS3 or Xbox 360 have one of the three new consoles. Of course, this doesn't mean doom and gloom for any of the consoles considering their short life span, but it does mean that pretty much all of the market is up for grabs and we shouldn’t be too concerned by how a console is performing just yet.

you know why? because the PS3 and Xbox 360 is good enough for 90% of us.

Abash3711d ago (Edited 3711d ago )

Nah, it's more because over 90% of consumers can't find a PS4 in stock

PSNintyGamer3711d ago

You know, some gamers actually don't have wallets full of money and wait a couple of years before purchasing a new console

Chupa-Chupa3711d ago

i want to believe you, but I don't. I see them at the store all the time. The lack of games for it doesn't justify the jump for me. I'm content with my PS3 and it's huge library at the moment.

Yi-Long3711d ago

@Abash: Exactly. I've been looking for a PS4 here in Holland since it was released, but it's out of stock everywhere, with long lists of people who have ordered one. Sometimes here and there a few hit the market, and are sold out immediately.

Demand is extremely high. Sadly, supply isn't. Not here in Holland at least.

Gazondaily3711d ago

Ah making figures up I see Abash.

Anyway, my mates are waiting on some decent games to pop up before making the jump.

Muffins12233711d ago

Even then it just came out,its gonna take a few years to get majority,i would say by the end of 2014,would say around 30% or more gamers would have a next gen console

Eonjay3711d ago

No, its becasue the just came out.

stuna13711d ago (Edited 3711d ago )

Although I agree with your assessment, I'm wondering why an article like this would even have to be written? Simple addition would verify the fact 90 percent of gamers don't own a next gen console! Even adding the WII U into the equation you'll find that it's actually over 90 percent that don't own a next gen console.

The real good thing about that is I that percentage is falling more rapidly than previous generations, and going at the pace it's going that percentage will be in the mid to low 80's before 2014 is up.

kevinsheeks3711d ago

I'm waiting for more games to release and a price cut >.>

rodiabloalmeida3711d ago (Edited 3711d ago )

@PSNintyGamer and @kevinsheeks

Myself included.

B-radical3711d ago

Yep im sure thats why.....smh

DanManDantheMan3711d ago

That's a dead argument man. I'm looking at one in stock right now: http://www.bestbuy.com/site...

CrimsonDragon903711d ago

Your wrong. I found a PS4 bought it then I change my mind and return it. Everyone looked at me funny when I was returning it. They ask me why was I returning it. I just answer, besides a few improvements in the graphics, my PS3 at home was keeping me more entertain then the PS4. For me to buy and keep a PS4 It needs better games and Sony should update the PS4. It has no 3d blu ray playback, it can't read and play movies and music stored in your USB. It has no adobe flash or internet browsing.

tuglu_pati3711d ago

@Abash

If you really want a PS$ you can find one. Here is an useful tool that lets you know as soon as is available. I found mine using it.

http://wiialerts.com/

NarooN3711d ago

That's nonsense. I've seen PS4's in stock in most of the stores here.

I just simply don't see the reason to jump to PS4 right now. Still playing my PS3 and PC. When the PS4 has a decent amount of exclusives that I'm interested in, then I'll make the jump. Otherwise if I got one, it'd just be sitting there collecting dust... What a waste.

MysticStrummer3711d ago

"i want to believe you, but I don't. I see them at the store all the time."

I want to believe you, but I don't. I've been looking for one pretty steadily since I bought my new TV a few weeks ago. They're nowhere to be found around me.

SaturdayNightBeaver3711d ago

Haha , here at my end there are ps4 consoles everywhere , but sadly we are all poor and cannot afford it. I'm saving like crazy tho :)

RyuCloudStrife3711d ago

what a stupid article. Thank you for telling me the obvious, douche!

Anything else to report? The sky is blue?

k2d3710d ago

And next-gen gamers stand for 90 % off console game purchases. /bs number, but we are a driving factor.

KiLLUMiNATi_893710d ago

90%? Where is the facts behind that theory ?

darthv723710d ago

i have the wii-u but not the xb1 or ps4 yet. So at least i have my toe in the door of next gen. xb1 will be a foot and the ps4 will be the rest of me at some point.

Agent Smith3711d ago

Why are people still calling the PS4/Xbone next-gen still? It's current gen now.

Truehellfire3711d ago

This always happens. It took like two years for the industry to stop calling PS360 next-gen. I agree its a little annoying but I'm fine with it for now. Another year though not so much...

-Foxtrot3711d ago

Or...maybe they can't afford one yet

Hicken3711d ago

That's the question I wanted to ask: what do they mean by "gamer?" Because not everybody being labeled as such would even have a PS3 or 360(since mobile only gamers and facebook-style gamers count, too).

worldwidegaming3711d ago

This is the part where fans start to act stupid.
PS3 is the BEST console out right now! It benefits the most from PS+ and has the most deals.
There is no real need to just jump up and buy into next gen with the lack of titles out right now.
You can do no wrong by just waiting it out!
In the end you will have a host of titles you like and maybe some price reductions on games.
Another fact, PS3 games are still being made! Exclusive to PS3 (not 360/xb1/PS4)

I went out and got one because I can afford to throw money into the wind like a lot of us out there.
If people wanna complain so much about it not being good enough they can just offer to pay for yours!

Note: Just go to a store and ask, they are not so rare in the states!

Agent_hitman3711d ago (Edited 3711d ago )

.

Actually more gamers wants a next gen hardware, but the thing is, they can't still afford it. Plus that games are expensive like $60..

While the other gamers would rather prefer PC games like STEAM where they can buy games at minimum/cheaper price..

assdan3711d ago (Edited 3711d ago )

I'd say it's because 90% of people have decided it's not necessary... yet. This is a stupid article though. It's barely 3 months in. Most people won't adopt these consoles for a year or two.

Akuma073711d ago

Actually it's because 160 million PEOPLE didn't buy a console.

There were 160 million consoles sold, this includes multiple purchases per house hold, and multiple purchases per person due to mechanical failure.

And given the HUGE failure rate of the 360, I would say that the actual number of people that own a a current gen console is significantly less than 160 mil.

Tdmd3711d ago

It is for me. I'll get a ps4 eventually, maybe next year. But so far, I haven't seen nothing that would bring the urge to upgrad now. Not only is ps3 still getting great support, but I also have a huge backlog to get.

Sarcasm3711d ago

Speak for yourself.

And it's been 3 MONTHS compared to 7-8 years of sales.

avengers19783711d ago

Well duh, almost everyone I know waits 2-3 years after a launch, because A) the price always comes down B) they are still enjoying there old systems, with plenty of cheap games to keep them happy C) the library for new consoles is usually pretty small/weak compared to what it will be D) they are not trying to drive themselves crazy trying to find a new console.

From a Sony fans point of view, PS4 does have the largest chunk of that 10% as it has outsold the WII U, and is currently a 2 to 1 over XB1 world wide.

BattleN3711d ago

I agree 100% I still play that 3rd person shooter from 2011 on my 360. Gears 3 is so fun to me I dont know why! I missed out on PS3 so I might have to buy one and all the gems it has to offer. I also have WiiU so I'm enjoying my gaming life. Posting via my WiiU really sweet! Ps4 will be a future purchase for sure tho!

Locknuts3710d ago

When you can just buy a PS3 and a PS+ subscription and never bother buying any games? Of course....

khitman183710d ago

Maybe if ps4 or the xbox supported backwards compatibility I wouldn't hesitate buying them right now. However, the lack of games aside, I see no benefit on buying a next gen system. Better graphics doesn't do it for me. I play games for fun and not to watch the visuals... Stuff like online chatting, playing movies, sharing and premium apps do not matter to me. My pc, my phone, my entertainment system, and even my TV has those stuff already... I want to PLAY games.. They are GAMING consoles afterall.

mafiahajeri3711d ago

no need to buy one now and would have been a bigger mistake to buy at launch, tbh I have one but tbh if I would recommend a time to buy the ps4 it would be with infamous and driveclub coming soon, infamous really has a next gen feel to it so its the best place to take the plunge.

But hey, supporting the industry right? How can we ask for top notch games without buying consoles.

I was pissed at devs not making games for current gen consoles because of its low market share, but gamers are to blame also they need to get moving and leave their last gen consoles behind.

admiralvic3711d ago (Edited 3711d ago )

I just have to ask... so what?

Unless you think Killzone Shadow Fall, Dead Rising 3, inFAMOUS Second Son or Killer Instinct are got to have titles, there isn't a reason to shell out $400+ dollars for a current gen console. I mean, most people that own an Xbox One or PS4 are either trendsetters (like myself), bought into the hype (people who said because the new consoles were super easy to developer for we wouldn't see a dry spell), people who happened to have the money at the time (easier to justify $400+ during the holidays than on March 15) or people who don't mind waiting because last gen consoles still have good games coming out and or several current gen games are also coming out for last gen consoles.

The only exception is the Wii U, since that has games (several solid ones at that and two heavy hitters coming out), though I think most people that don't have a Wii U are waiting for SSB / MK or rather spend the extra money for a console with a more positive outlook (zero offense to the Wii U, which I think is a nice console, but the outlook is pretty grim and most sites look at it as dead).

Such a good game to me. Crazy how different peoples opinions can get.

Crows901h ago(Edited 1h ago)

For me it wasn't that surprising. There was some bad press before. There's also the matter and element of a person's disposition when trying out a certain game. Sometimes you're just not really into the type of game that you're playing so you put it down because you don't like it. Not necessarily because it's a bad game but because you're just not up for something like this. Reviewers have a tough because no matter what they feel like playing they've got to play what's releasing.

I have many times gone back to games that I put down only to thoroughly enjoy them the second time around because either there wasn't another exciting game coming out around the same time or I just had no other games to play and haven't played that type of game in a while. I'm not the type of person that can just play a souls game through all this iterations one after the other without getting burnt out on the formula.

In my opinion this game was great from the start. Some bugs here and there but nothing worse than the most AAA releases during the same time after and before. All I did was wait one week and I had a phenomenal time with the game. No other zombie survival game comes close to how I thoroughly enjoyed this one

Leeroyw1h ago

Second act of that game far surpassed the first. Which is why people felt it didn't live up to the hype of the trailers. Personally I loved it. But it was a slog to get your bike and weapons up to skill.

Inverno1h ago

Was gonna post a brick wall of text but I'll keep it short. Pardon my French but f**k the media for the hate they gave this game. If you have a PC to play it on you can get it as low as 10 bucks, and if you have a PS then it's a no brainer. Totally worth a play.

phatak46m ago(Edited 38m ago)

I don't even comment here often but had to for this game, I still stand by my opinion that this was one of the top 10 games of the ps4 generation, I preferred days gone over god of war, horizon and last of us 2, the launch version was definitely piss poor and that messed up the reviews for this game, honestly some games deserve a re-review or post patch review as the metacritic score stays forever but the reality is its not even the same game anymore, the ps5 patch is amazing and the pc version which I play on nowadays is one of the best looking games ever, complete shame that we wont get a sequel, god of war got one, horizon got one, last of us got one, spider man got one, ghosts of tshushima about to get one but this game wont get one, sucks to be honest.

Ps3/360 era had some hidden underated games for me it was shadows of the damned, alice madness returns that deserved more sales and a sequel/ higher scores, and similarly for the ps4 era it was days gone, and dying light 1 that deserved much more love, dying light atleast got a sequel, everyone needs to play this game once and judge for themselves, for me its officially the most underrated game of the ps4 era, go play it if you haven't.

andy857m ago

Awesome game. Just bought it for my laptop last week
