X1 DRM Issues Still A Threat? X1 User Reports Not Being Able To Access System Settings After Ban

Xbox One DRM worries arise, after a string of foreboding circumstances force everyone into rampant speculation, after gamer Moonlightswami tweets about his Xbox One ban.

Wow! So Microsoft can lock you from playing offline or even accessing the system options if you're banned? Now I understand why the PS4 version of Ghosts says "offline play enabled". M$ just refuses to relinquish any control over a console we, the customer, legitimately bought.

RyuCloudStrife3836d ago (Edited 3836d ago )

Nothing is holding Microsoft from going back to the true vision they originally had for the Xbox One.

This just proves that Microsoft's ill will towards the consumers is still there, I can see the Xbox One we knew as of April coming back within a year or two...

And Kinect is forced upon you to gather information on everything you do. Wake up.

Eonjay3836d ago (Edited 3836d ago )

Thats not DRM... thats Microsoft having too much damn power over something that you purchased. They shut his whole system the eff down.

I don't think they have the the right to do that. It's his property so if they want to stop him from going on line then fine but this skynet crap needs to stop.

Microsoft is really stumbling out of the gate and falling on its face with this launch. There isn't a singe positive news for the console and every negative rumour eventually turns out to be true. Actually, they were never interested in gaming to begin with. Xbox and gaming were only a trojan horse for them.

http://www.theverge.com/201...

This gen they were looking to deliver the finishing blow and complete their plan that began more than a decade ago but they failed because of consumer outcry or at least were delayed for now. I shudder at the thought of what horrors MS have planned for gaming and what they would do if they were left to their own devices.

4Sh0w3836d ago

Nobodys blind they are just sensible, this is flamebait thats it. This guy doesn't even care and hasnt said a word since he signed a NDA, so all this hyperbole is just propaganda with no valid substance. The console is not released and a mistake on Targets part doesn't give anyone the right to play before the street date. If we were having the discussion on the 22nd it would be valid until then its just fanboy nonsense by the same old flamebait anti micrsoft sites like cinemablend and the very same n4g microsoft haters, I wonder why maybe because sony hasnt shown anything worthwhile you guys have nothing to do but nitpick X1, sad really ps4 launches very soon yet the ps hive mind main focus by far is X1, jealous much.

Albert Penello on GAF :

For sure this has nothing to do with requiring a connection. There is no "DRM removal" in the Day One update because none of the consoles were ever built with that stuff in it.

WHY DAY ONE UPDATE THEN????

DeadlyFire3836d ago

Why is Microsoft doing this? Well its before the launch date that's why. They think they can hold all their gamers back until launch day it will be more memorable or perhaps they don't have all their servers running yet. The bans are temporary supposedly. To me if you lock me out of a new car I just bought for a few weeks. It seems like I would be more pissed off at you than anything. Seems to me like Nintendo and Microsoft are stumbling all over themselves to sell their products while Sony walks on stage and smiles.

@ above. Why Day one Update?
Because they are rushing it to market!! As always. So they left off some software in the first batch of consoles.

Albert Penello on GAF :

WHY DAY ONE UPDATE THEN????

That is an outright LIE! Microsoft said themselves, earlier in the year, that there would be a day one update to disable DRM and all of the old policy features. This is why people have been saying "If you can turn it off in a patch, you can turn it back on in a patch."

Do the lies ever stop, with Microsoft?! MY GAWD!

OH NOES! I am going to freak out and abandon my Xbox one for the safety of the PS4 because I am oblivious that playing games, and even consoles online may result in a ban like they have for many years!!!

Please. Some of you are either incredibly oblivious, or just intentionally acting so.

Harmy6663835d ago

@RyuCloudStrife @Eonjay

Microsoft haven't locked anything down. He hasn't downloaded the Release Update to take away the DRM restrictions.

Plus if you go to his Twitter page, you'll see that everything has been sorted out by Major Nelson and the Xbox Team.

People need to research exactly what's going, before they start throwing their judgment out...

Are you kidding me? You support a company that created one good franchise aka Halo but is ready to drill you up the ass and suck the money out of you. I'm not defending Sony but they have come out with some amazing games this generation. Why would you support such a company? Do you have no self respect and dignity?

AngelicIceDiamond3836d ago (Edited 3836d ago )

Wow.

You know I can't help but think some people are causing unwarranted animosity with MS.

The console gets leaked early and MS takes action against it.

Suddenly its makes headlines that MS made a decision that EVERYBODY saw coming.

This guy did this all to himself. He just couldn't wait another week to play it, when everyone else got there's.

He gets his console early that's fine and great. A regular person would keep it in there closet and simply wait till release, or at least that's what I would do.

So lets all blame MS for something this guy did.

ZodTheRipper3836d ago

"He gets his console early that's fine and great. A regular person would keep it in there closet and simply wait till release, or at least that's what I would do."

You should discontinue your account on here for that statement. Who in their right mind would keep the box closed until launch after getting one early?

raytraceme3836d ago

Lol I lost some iq points reading your garbage. When has it ever been not Ok to use something that YOU PURCHASED THUS MAKING YOU THE OWNER OF THAT DEVICE? Is it not your property then if you cant use it early? No human wouldn't not use something if they got it early unless you are an xbot, xbug, or xboner.

XboxSeriesBest3836d ago

These are exactly the type of retards you would have to evade if you purchase an Xbox one this Nov 22nd

maniacmayhem3836d ago (Edited 3836d ago )

@Raytrace

Yes it's your system but it is still THEIR services you are using. The same applies to Sony when you log into PSN and have to check mark a ToS agreement.

Why would MS want someone leaking features that might not be ready before launch, and posting it all over youtube for the world to see? Hmmmm, maybe because some websites like N4G might blow up and claim the Xbox One won't be ready for launch! That might be one reason.

How about this CoD issue? Someone plays the game early and it's obvious the X1 is not set up yet as we have already heard from Panello but even in that small amount of time we got mass reports of the X1 still having DRM built inside.

THIS is why MS does not want the console shown off early. They know the internet is just ready to explode with hate and bias.

AngelicIceDiamond3836d ago

@Ray

Another keyboard warrior trying to fight the power. Your saying anybody who waits a week to play a console that got shipped to them early is a fanboy.

Greaaat logic. Yeah its your console but why play it early and jeopardize your chances of not playing it at all later?

If your not suppose to play it early then guess what? Don't play it early.

Your trying to fight something you can't control. And you'll just lose at the end.

And yes I know, I know its the principle of it. He shouldn't get banned because he's playing something he owns early.

Well, I don't know what to tell you but the world doesn't always work the way you want it to.

Sony isn't banning people if that makes you feel any better.

torchic3836d ago (Edited 3836d ago )

@AngelicIceDiamond

if you're just a fan and not being payed by Microsoft then you ought to be ashamed of yourself.

wow that's really pathetic, defending a company you like is one thing but what you just wrote (original post) there is just...

wow!

SITH3836d ago

Exactly diamond. These people complaining about something they deem is Microsoft's fault is misguided. That is intentional obviously. Obviously Microsoft had no intent for people to use the console when this impatient person logged it online. And everyone here knows it was going to lock up in 24hrs without the day one update.

rainslacker3836d ago (Edited 3836d ago )

I can't imagine anyone would want to wait a week or two to play(or at least boot up) the console which they just dropped $500 on, and have likely been anticipating for some time.

I would do so just to try. If I couldn't connect to update then so be it, it's still pre-release. But he could update, and if it were me, the first thing I would do is play a game or three.

If I got banned I would just tell MS that I didn't realize that I wasn't allowed to play it and hope for the best. At worst I would get a replacement console or my money back.

But seriously? A regular person would put it in the closet? Do you even read the comments on here?

I will say, however, I wouldn't go around posting stuff on the net, but that's just me.

WitWolfy3836d ago (Edited 3836d ago )

@AngelicICEDiamond

I wanna slap you in your whore mouth for saying MS is justified for what happened to this guy who LEGALLY purchased the console and trying to play it early.

Now go back to home on Whore Island!!

Captain Qwark 93836d ago

ive defended MS since the X1 announcement but this is just wrong. you want to punish someone, you punish the retailer. this man paid for his console legitimately and planned to wait until release date but then didnt have too. not his fault by any means.

MS is very lucky i dont work for sony because if i did, i would send him a ps4 for free and let him play it all he wants. that kind of press would destroy MS even more

Nevers0ft3836d ago

You fail to recognise a few key facts:
- It's not his fault he received the console early.
- He's not signed an NDA or is beholden to Microsoft in any way.
- I doubt it says "If our supply chain derps up and you get your console early, we'll screw you" in the Terms of Services.

This guy owns the console early through no fault of his own and he absolutely should not have arbitrary "punishments" forced upon him by Microsoft because somebody else screwed up.

rainslacker3835d ago

@Quark

I was actually wondering if Sony would make a move like that, just to rub salt in the wound, and give us forum goers some fun discussion for the week up to the PS4's release. Doing so means some other person, not as bright, may post the information this guy didn't.

I doubt they will though. The embargo is about lifted, and even Francis wasn't allowed to show anything that wasn't already known.

Sometimes it's fun to think about what would come of PR stunts like that though.:)

This is the future Microsoft has been salivating over. Death to ownership and death to freedom. We play their games on their TIME and they can pull the plug anytime.

When you buy an Xbox One, you're not buying a piece of hardware, you're buying a license to play games that must be renewed.

kickerz3836d ago Show
sinjonezp3836d ago

The people who disagree with you are the reasons why microsoft can do what they do. I understand that the online services is theirs and thats ok. But to have the ability to band you out of your legitimate bought product is just crazy. The person has a 500 brick. Thats some serious control and where in the terms it says he cannot access his product which he owns? This is very worrying and I have been saying that microsoft will implement control no matter how they spin the DRM or other aspects of how they intend to control content and software. At least sony puts the DRM status on the back of a box to give the person whom is buying the option to reconsider purchasing the product. The bottom line is I do not like the way home gaming is changing. When you bought a SNES, n64, dreamcast, ps2, etc, etc, you buy the system, you put the game in, you play the game. That is it. Now we have all these instruments of control that is really souring the way we access games or enjoy content. I dont want to get home and plug up my device and wait hours to update the console, reboot, update games, reboot game, update apps, reboot apps; no internet access, csn not access game, cannot access apps, cannot watch blu ray , needs update. Its sad times with owning a console on any platform. I wish we could. Turn the clock but unfortunately we live in a world where software and hardware companies are trying to control everything which in turn will lead to an abundance of hacking, modding and so forwarth.

Kydawg3836d ago (Edited 3836d ago )

all M$ is looking to do is sell a bunch of consoles, then sell the Xbox brand and company to the NSA.

1OddWorld3836d ago

Are we grasping at straws over the possibility of the DRM rearing its ugly head again? Maybe not but, I don't think they will make a huge mistake like that again {at least not so full force}. I do believe the next time we see the DRM issue it will have crept up so gradually that we might not have a chance to be heard. Like a mosquito it will be long gone before we even know we have been bitten. And on that note I will dismiss this info as DRM related and just mark it up to unpatched software and an untimely ban.

You can check my comments I am a Sony guy, but it's time to take a step back and let XBOne breath. Not saying by any means not to give it to Microsoft when it's deserving, but this time I think its BS.

quenomamen3836d ago

That's cuz we don't own the consoles anymore, we are just infinitely renting them.
Not just Xbone PS4 too, but MS does have a greater thirst for control.

come_bom3836d ago (Edited 3836d ago )

I have a feeling stupid fanboys are jumping the gun on this one... again.

Since the X1 OS is being constantly updated, I think we all should wait for November 22nd, to see what gives with the console... what it can do and what kind of DRM it has. I'm sure there are going to be out there a lot of testers...

As for the console being banned and not accessing the console system settings... if true, that's seriously f**ked up.

There won't be no more acquiring game publishers from Microsoft in the future . Xbox has to pay Microsoft back. It might take two decades to do that.

sagapo1d 17h ago (Edited 1d 17h ago )

I don’t understand what you’re saying. Xbox IS microsoft so there’s no “paying back “.
And MS gross profit in 2023 was over 140 billion dollars so forget your 2 decades.

Unless you mean the money MS invested in Xbox (acquisitions included) and the time it will take for xbox as a brand to gain that money back on it’s own, then yeah, that could take a while.

romulus231d 10h ago

The better term to use might be return on investment, xbox is simply a division of Microsoft one that MS can easily do away with if profit margins are not met. So in that regard he's right, if xbox isn't showing the expected return on investment the higher ups are expecting than it's unlikely Microsoft will acquire any other studios any time soon, especially if they are spending billions buying developers just to shut them down in the end.

MrBaskerville1d 3h ago (Edited 1d 3h ago )

Xbox is a division that they discussed shutting down but doubled down on after Gamepass was pitched.

It needs to make money at some point. Big money.

KwietStorm_BLM1d 3h ago

So you do understand it or..?

rokos1d 1h ago

According to Statista the net income of Microsoft is about $72.4 billion dollars which is a bit lower than last year profit. That is almost as much as Activision's acquisition but I assume that would be a one off since it costs so much plus I see how their focus has been shifted to AI, thus any major future investments will probably be in that area.

Markusb331d ago

i think you are really missing the point

VariantAEC15h ago

Xbox isn’t a separate company from Microsoft. It’s all Microsoft.

Abear2122h ago(Edited 22h ago)

Let’s be real, this is the media spinning all the acquisitions and liquidations of said developers and spinning it to make M$ the villain.

This was bound to happen, a bigger slice of pie and cut costs, when the games come they stand to make more and that’s their agenda—it was the writing on the wall when the sales went through and legally all those who approved the sale and mergers knew this would happen.

Snowflakes need to realize business is ugly and you can cry all you want but this is how capitalism works. And it works.

That said, M$ needs to steer the narrative and grab hold of all this, make their plans known, hype the hell out of all those dead IP’s they plan to revive, and be honest about the timeline. This is likely to involve mobile and IP on other consoles, and most people realize that.

The problem is this company is incapable of being transparent and seems to often want to dissuade and confuse is customer base. The lack of E3 has hurt Microsoft and I don’t think they know how to properly or effectively market their brand anymore.

There really needs to be a class action lawsuit here. You buy these companies just to put people out of jobs. And it’s not like something happened to derail their plans this WAS the plan. Microsoft has no business in this space at all.

franwex1d 19h ago (Edited 1d 19h ago )

Microsoft has been doing this for years. They simply want the IPs. Look at Nokia. Look at Skype. This time it simply expanded to games. Gaming is not as important to Microsoft’s executives as it was to the founders too. Bill Gates was willing to sell the og Xbox at a loss. Steve Balmer approved the red ring of death fiasco. This CEO isn’t really a gamer.

-Foxtrot1d 19h ago

Maybe it's time though to put a stop to it and use a big giant like Microsoft as a huge example to the rest of these big companies.

There has to be a line drawn somewhere.

People like the FTC and the like went against Microsoft yet their Actvision deal was still allowed to go through yet look what's happened...it's not even Acitivisions studios aswell, it's Bethesdas.

VariantAEC14h ago

Years?

Try several decades, and in the gaming space 2.3 decades.

Jon6158623h ago

You do realize this happens in ALL industries? Or are you just saying this because it is Microsoft? In any case I feel for those that are being let go but the trch industry is suffering right now.

jwillj2k419h ago(Edited 18h ago)

This absolutely does NOT happen all the time. Let me know the last time 1 company with a terrible product track record spent 100 billion onto acquire MULTIPLE successful companies in under a year only to shut them down and stop making their products regardless of how successful they were. Not merge them, completely shut them down.

And you can’t use Microsoft in your example.

Notellin19h ago(Edited 19h ago)

Class action lawsuit? The law is on their side and protects them at all costs. There are no rules to protect the people at the bottom.

jwillj2k419h ago

Not true when it comes to mass layoff do your research.

RNTody1d 19h ago

Ninja Theory, Perfect Dark, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Wolfenstein 3, Dishonored, Prey, Doom, Quake... something tells me that bad things are going to happen to these entities under Microsoft.

MrDead1d 9h ago

ID software, the makers of Doom and Wolfenstein that have been with us since 1991 could be gone and MS will keep the IPs.

I hope some of these studios can buy their freedom from MS otherwise this is going to be even more devastating for the industry and gamers.

Yui_Suzumiya1d 6h ago (Edited 1d 6h ago )

That's exactly what I'm worried about. I've been a fan of id since Wolfenstein 3D and I'm honestly afraid.

lodossrage1d 2h ago

Toys for Bob saw the writing on the wall and bought themselves out.

Wouldn't be the first time a company did that under MS either. Bungie and Twisted Pixel did the same. Considering what just happened, I can see some other devs trying to buy themselves out too.

LBP was wonderful

ApocalypseShadow3d ago

Microsoft in a nutshell. Always tried to poach Sony employees, games, 3rd party games and devices like the depth camera that was turned into Kinect but was running on PS2 before Xbox 360. Wouldn't be surprised they wanted LBP. Just like they worked behind the scenes pushing the MLB to bring Sony's baseball game to Xbox instead of making their own.
https://www.playstationlife...

They didn't spend years trying to develop their own baseball game. They wanted Sony's game.

They're scum.

Zachmo1822d ago

Microsoft didn't force MLB on Xbox. MLB gave Sony 2 options either go multiplat or risk losing the license.

Rynxie2d ago

And why do you think MLB said that? I believe Ms approached MLB.

ApocalypseShadow2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Totally ridiculous comment.

The only exclusivity Sony had was to their own creation of The Show. Microsoft could have paid the MLB for the license just like Sony did and made their own baseball game.

Microsoft instead, groomed MLB for years in trying to poach Sony's game and bring it to Xbox. They're worth 3 TRILLION dollars. You think that's not enough money to make their own baseball game? Don't be delusional.

Microsoft spun it like they always do and told the media that they had to trust Sony with their hardware. After they put Sony in that position of not having a choice. Either go multiplatform or stop making one of their successful games. That's a no win scenario.

And what did Microsoft do? They didn't try to sell the game to the Xbox community. They put it on game pass to hurt Sony. Pushing the idea of why buy games that are $70 when you can play them in their cheap service for $10. It was a dirty tactic.

You fell for the Kool aid drink Microsoft served you instead of spitting it out. Hope it tasted good because you were fooled by Phil and the gang.

Xbox executive Sara Bond has told Axios that Microsoft spent a number of years trying to get MLB The Show onto Xbox consoles. And when it finally succeeded in breaking off PlayStation’s long-held exclusivity, the company had to “trust” Sony with pre-release Xbox Series X/S consoles.

Bond revealed that MLB The Show “always came up” in conversations between Microsoft and the Major League Baseball organization. “We always said, ‘We love this game. It would be a huge opportunity to bring it to Xbox.'” she recalled. However, when Microsoft’s efforts materialized, it put the company in an awkward situation where it had to send in pre-release consoles to a rival company.

They were too cheap/inept/lazy to develop their own mlb game, so they port begged for years and bribed the mlb to make the show multiplatform. Like i said many times, xbox brought nothing to the table their 24 years, ZERO.

ApocalypseShadow1d 11h ago

At least you and others get it. Note drank the Kool aid and asked for seconds thinking it was refreshing.

Most don't even know how it all played out but it's there in black and white for all to see. Microsoft brought it up for years until the MLB forced Sony's hand. It was a win win for Microsoft. Kill one reason to buy a PlayStation or kill the game by dropping it in a cheap service to kill Sony's sales numbers on PlayStation.
