Why Xbox One's 720p problem is the biggest deal-breaker yet

VideoGamer: "For a long time I've accepted Microsoft's rhetoric on the power of Xbox One. I've gone along with the talk about balance; I've acknowledged the promise of Cloud technology; and I've empathised with its frustration over the ongoing community backlash."

It is. Soon we'll be in 2014, 720 gaming in such a modern world, on a games console that will be around for the better part of ten years, and a console that's sold at $100 higher than it's more powerful, 1080p capable competitor, is simply unacceptable, and you'd be blind to think otherwise.

slimeybrainboy3842d ago

I still think that this is being blown out of proportion. Devs only found out the final specs this year. Engines arent really optimised for next gen consoles yet.

I think this highlights that the PS4 is more powerful, but I dont think this means that the XB1 wont be able to 1080p 60fps in future multiplats. Didnt alot of devs say they were shocked by the PS4 GDDR5 announcement in Feb? And dev kits were only finalised a couple of months ago.

As developers get a hang of the XB1 hardware they'll be able to get alot more out of it. Look at the PS3 launch games compared to GTAV.

The Meerkat3842d ago

But then PS4 devs will improve too.

They might not add more pixels or fps but the PS4 devs could add better lighting or AA.

There is no way anybody can put a positive spin on this news without looking like they are employed by MS

theBAWSE3842d ago

@slimeybrain

well doesn't that goes for ps4 as well? Sony changed the specs so devs are not used to its architecture either and yet.... it's pushing DOUBLE the pixels of xbone

this will not get better as devs get used to both consoles the gap will widen as the ps4 is that more powerful

shivvy243842d ago

I see why it wasn't called the xbox720
/s
@slimey, I kinda do agree with you but I doubt theres gonna be much of a difference on resolution once optimised

AsimLeonheart3842d ago (Edited 3842d ago )

Both consoles are starting at an equal footing right now. There is no doubt that Xbone will improve over the years but so will the PS4. It is just like two brothers ageing together. When the 5 year old reaches 10, the formerly 10 year old is already 15. The little one will never be able to catch up.

vigilante_man3842d ago

Now we know why they didn't name the new console XBox 720!!

In 2-3 years the tools will be there to get the XB1 as close to where the PS4 is now as possible. By that time the PS4 tools will be even more advanced.

The PS4 has the raw power. It will always be ahead in terms of graphics. Lets get used to this right away and move on.

Now we know, we can focus on the most important thing - the GAMES!

scofios3842d ago

Dudes calm down you can soon buy 1080p dlc on live .
Or 1080p if you are gold :-)

4Sh0w3842d ago

"But then PS4 devs will improve too."

So, but why are we pretending 2 lower res games mean that X1 cant do 1080p its whole lfetime, besides the fact that there are already 1080p games on the console now?

Crazay3842d ago (Edited 3842d ago )

I find the # of disagrees comical.

You're absolutely right. PS3 was notoriously difficult to develop for but developers figured it out with time and the system benefited greatly for it. The same will happen here, for both systems even.

tigertom533842d ago

I love a lot of things about Microsoft but I agree with what this person wrote Sony has sealed my purchase first this generation. maybe down the road I will look at Microsoft with price drops and new sku for what exclusives they might have....

tigertom533842d ago

Xbox should of been easier to develop for being X86 processor and the architecture similar to xbox 360 im not sure how much more they can improve this generation, it seems like a slightly better xbox 360 with a little bit more cpu power and ram...

bcrazy183842d ago

I agree with you. I've stayed this before, the PS4 is easier to code for and the devs just recently got the finalized dev kits.

@ The Meerkat and theBAWSE.... Yes it does mean the PS4 will ass well but the Xbox One had more to gain than the PS4 so the improvement will be more with the Xbox One over time.

Stick893842d ago

The comparison of Xbox One to PS3 when it comes to programming isn't very good. The Xbox One's architecture is for the most part identical to the Xbox 360's (everything is just bigger and better of course) yet it's specs when compared to the PS4 are lacking and there is no denying that, there is no secret sauce here for developers to figure out. The PS3 on the other hand launched with a totally unknown architecture and was arguably on par or better than the 360 spec wise (except for not unifying the RAM). Once developers figured out how to code for the PS3 they were able to create games that matched what 360 could do, and in terms of exclusives look better than anything 360 had.

TLDR:
Xbox One architecture isn't new, no secret formula.

PS3 had a totally unique architecture and therefore had room for growth as developers learned it.

Apples to oranges.

NewMonday3842d ago (Edited 3842d ago )

@bcrazy18

actually the upside is even bigger on the PS4 because future games will tap into GPU compute and developers will let themselves loos with the huge RAM bandwidth.

boneso823842d ago

Current PS3 owners are going to buy a PS4, if and when they upgrade. A significant percentage of 360 owners are going to buy a PS4, if and when they upgrade. A percentage of 360 owners are going to buy an Xbone, if and when they upgrade. That percentage of 360 owners moving to Playstation next gen are what is going to make the difference in sales, because nobody already in the Sony camp are going to convert to a more expensive, less powerful and most importantly, unfamiliar and unliked piece of hardware from a company they are not familiar with who have dug themselves a very very very deep hole. It's only a matter of time before they are buried alive in it.

gaffyh3842d ago

It's actually quite a well thought out article, and you can tell the writer is genuinely frustrated at the fact that MS has blatantly lied to everyone up to this point when it comes to the power of the system when compared to the PS4.

Major Nelson said he was looking forward to the truth coming out. I bet he regrets saying that now...

UltimateMaster3842d ago (Edited 3842d ago )

@People saying Xbox One will get better with time.

No doubt it will.

The PS4's GPU is still superior, meaning they can push graphics even more so than the Xbox One can.

It's not some foreign architecture that's hard to develop for, maybe it is in the case of the eSRAM but that's it.
3rd party developers made almost identical games last gen because they did not want to bother to learn the Cell, but first party made good use of it.

Now, not only will first part devs make good use of it, but so will 3rd party and it's already showing. Some sites say you can only increase the performance of Gb/s by 40 with the eSRAM, with the 68Gb/s of DDR3, it makes around 105/110 GB/s as opposed to the easier GDDR5's 176Gb/s.
Other sites say it can reach 200Gb/s in total, but it's still not that significant.

First one, 110 VS 176, X1=62% of the Ps4
Second one "max optimization in some future", PS4=88% of the X1
(This comes from somewhataccurate.com, just the name of the website makes me feel like, meh.)
That's if they even use the eSRAM, 68 VS 176, X1=38% of the PS4.

And that's before we count in the GPU PS4 50% > X1.

So yeah, if everything were already optimized maybe it would be a bigger debate, maybe not, but developers are hating the eSRAM because it's too complicated. So, your call.

theAMC19813842d ago

Both consoles will improve, but how much, nobody knows. I just don't think people should rule out Xbox One so fast. We can see that the PS4 is more powerful (on paper), but so was the PS3. It depends on what they bring to the platform. How can a system (360) have a 50% fail rate, but still stay on top for 32 months? I'm sure Xbox will be worth it as well as PS4 will be.

I can't wait to see the next God of War.

If nobody can put a positive spin on this news about the resolution without sounding like they are employed by Microsoft themselves then the person who thinks this is a reason to not get a Xbox One is employed by Sony. There is no way that the Xbox One will suck (really people... suck?) as people say who have never played it, but seem to follow what other people say.

A game system hasn't really sucked for years
The CD-i sucked. Virtual Boy sucked.

The RROD was a horrible situation, but at least people got to play theirs for a few years, but the PS3 had updates that killed off the system completely (an update!) a lot of times if you didn't update, you couldn't experience some better features until you did. That is scary. I'm glad I never had a single problem with updates though. Let's just hope things are better this time.

We finally got some PS4 games at my job and I instantly got hyped. We got a Xbox One demo too, but can't set it up which is killing me. People need to be experiencing these consoles and we need to set up the damn kiosk.

gaffyh3842d ago (Edited 3842d ago )

@theAMC - "We can see that the PS4 is more powerful (on paper), but so was the PS3."

Difference is, PS3 was A LOT more difficult to code for than the Xbox 360. Which is why nobody other than Sony devs were able to fully take advantage of the system. This time round, PS4 is as easy, and looks like it is in fact easier to code for than the Xbone. I said it months ago, this would most likely mean better looking third party games on PS4 vs Xbone, and looks like I and a lot of others, were right.

"It depends on what they bring to the platform. How can a system (360) have a 50% fail rate, but still stay on top for 32 months?"

Simple, price. Xbox 360 has been $100 or more cheaper than the cheapest PS3 for the entire generation. The other thing to make note of is that this is in America, which MS has focused on this gen and most likely will next gen. Worldwide, PS3 has been outselling Xbox 360 for a while now. The final thing to remember is that some of those 360 sales are from consoles that have failed or been banned, so people buying multiples. I have 1 failed one out of warranty myself and have 1 working one.

If your system gets bricked, it is actually fixable, as it is a software issue. RROD and YLOD are hardware issues, much more difficult to fix. My PS3 has never gotten bricked by an update.

SilentNegotiator3842d ago

I wonder where are all those Xbone fans that said that the developers will program for the lowest common denominator and the PS4's potential will be wasted anyway so it does not matters if the PS4 is a "little" more powerful. They were so horribly wrong.
Now we see that the PS4 is much more powerful and its potential is being utilized.

BF4 PS4 = 1600x900 = 1,440,000 pixels
BF4 Xbone = 1280x720 = 921,600 pixels

PS4 is pushing 56.25% more pixels than Xbone!

CoD Ghosts PS4 = 1920x1080 = 2,073,600 pixels
CoD Ghosts Xbone = 1280x720 = 921,600 pixels

PS4 is pushing 125% more pixels than Xbone!

The better textures, lighting, anti-aliasing and frame rate to boot are a completely another matter. The fact is that the PS4 is simply much more powerful than the Xbone and once the Santa Monica and Naughty Dog games are revealed, we will truly understand the difference in power.

Elit3Nick3842d ago

you have to realize that resolution is only a certain part of the game, just because BF4 PS4 version has 56.25% more pixels, does not mean that it's more powerful by the same amount, assuming that both were using the same everything(textures, lighting etc.) it would mean that it's about 20% more powerful. But the fact here is that the BF4 X1 version IS using better textures, I mean not marginally better, but multiple comparisons confirm this, the difference is a bit smaller, not to mention that they are still working out the ESRAM means that gap might close even more. Not saying that both will have identical performance at their max, but the difference between the two is much smaller than most people here like to think

McScroggz3842d ago

@Elit3Nick The Xbox One isn't using better textures, Infinity Ward just simply increased the sharpness. Well, that's what it looks like to me at least. Based off of everything I've read about game design the game with the lower resolution isn't going to have better textures - that's backwards.

The Xbox One's version has it's sharpness and contrast tuned higher with weaker overall visual effects. There isn't a huge difference for people who aren't sensitive to these things (For the most part I consider myself among them), but this idea that the lower resolution versions of games will have better textures, etc. is just a farce.

AnteCash3842d ago

You dont need to w8 for ND or SM ,Gameinformer already sed that Order 1886 is the best looking game they have ever seen.

TristanPR773842d ago

Agree with you. What is shocking here is the extreme denial that the xbox community have, they even believe that an inferior version of a game will look better than the superior version.

cell9893842d ago

@Elit3Nick extreme denial, I get what youre trying to say, but you seem to emphasize your point way overboard, like youre trying real hard to let people know the xbone isnt that bad, when in reality I think it is.

I bet the PS4 version has (for the mist part) been done, and it was the xbone version Infinity Ward had to really optimize to get it running at 60FPS. HAd they spent more time optimizing the PS4 version we would have better lightning, effects, and AA as well. That extra horsepower was just used to bump the resolution.

I picture developer nightmares with the xbone SDKs

This will be a deal breaker for some of the core. While having the best graphics appeals to some of us most of the base which makes up the casual which is the majority of the market are not really going to compare graphic specs side by side. Casuals on the other hand are going to go with brand name and/or price and errr availability. The PS4 has the upper-hand on price. MS is missing an opportunity to have a matching or cheaper price point.

All in all what does this really mean....if you want to play games that are only on the PS4 then they'll get a PS4 and if you want to play games that are only on the XB1 then they'll get a XB1.

boing13842d ago (Edited 3842d ago )

Word of mouth is enough for MS to be worried. And this is just the beginning.

5eriously3842d ago

@Sayai jin

THUS if you want the best of both worlds then play the best games on the PC and the best exclusives on PS4. Than that makes the eXB0Ne an eXN0Ne and totally redundant in my books. I will look at the eXB0Ne in future purely for the Kinect2 experience unless the Kinect2 also becomes available for the PC.

MynextGen3842d ago

Don't use the word "we" to describe the community you are a part of. It just comes off weird as you are most likely not a part of that company.

InTheLab3842d ago

There's dedicated servers for PS3 games.

Internal HDD is still a thing.

MS has money but not to burn on a failed launch or yet another failure like the first Xbox, RRoD, zune and eventually surface.

You also only have Forza and DR3 for launch. Titanfall is multiplat and coming in March. The other games you have look and perform better on another console.

TristanPR773842d ago

PS4 have HDD replacement and xbone don't.
PS3 have dedicated servers
Microsoft have money and yet they have never won a console generation while Sony have won 2 console generations and have the best console of history, the PS2.

Don't force it, accept it and die in peace.

ambientFLIER3842d ago

Microsidt didn't develop COD ghosts...so why the hell are you blaming them? BF4 looks better and has WAY more going on, so obviously the console can handle better graphics. Forza is 1080p/60fps bative...

tigertom533842d ago

Microsoft F**k up the GPU....

ziggurcat3842d ago

@ ambient:

IW not being able to get CoD @1080p native on xbone means one of two things:

1. the hardware isn't strong enough (which is why you could blame MS).

2. the people at IW are awful programmers, and should probably just stop making games altogether if they can't get native 1080p @ 60fps (and CoD isn't necessarily known for taxing the system, graphically) on a console that is at least 10x more powerful than current gen tech.

xbone supporters are probably now seeing what PS3 owners had to deal with early on in this generation's life cycle - bad ports from lazy devs. we're even starting to see "bu-bu-but xbone is more difficult to program for" excuses (which i've always thought as being lazy talk from devs, even on PS3) coming from the xbox camp, and esram isn't exactly new tech, either...

cell9893842d ago

@ambientFLIER: you really got to stop using Forza as an example of supreme graphics, the game runs on a lot of old gen tech, Forza is more of a xbox360 port for xbone, which is why its able to achieve 1080P/60FPS a lot of smoke and mirrors on that game. Ryse is still the best visually impressive game xbone has

It's a shame to think that the Xbox team has been resting on their laurels like this. It all feels like the last launch in reverse. I wonder if MS will be able to pull themselves up from this much like Sony did the last gen.

devwan3842d ago (Edited 3842d ago )

The xbox team haven't been resting on laurels - they're been working hard to create the system and ecosystem they were tasked with - al all-in-one living room box. Not a games console. People inside the xbox team apparently made plenty of comments and suggestions regarding the direction, policies and focus of the platform - but it's the suits in charge and they prioritised TV and TV content over gaming (apparently investing more money in this than gaming). They took gaming and gamers for granted - that was a given for them, they already had them in the bag. They wanted 10x the audience and it looks like they'll have to settle for only a fraction of what they thought they had and no more.

Foxhound9223842d ago (Edited 3842d ago )

Wait....what game is it? Call of what?

OT: Still this is no excuse, and the fact that it is call of duty kind of goes against what you are saying. Cod is in no way shape or form a next gen game. It's not a hard game to run in terms of processing. If current generation games can run it, then there should be no reason why the x1 can't. If they can't get a simple copy and paste, simple game to run on par with the ps4, then what can they?

jmc88883842d ago (Edited 3842d ago )

Actually so far we're talking about multiple games, and expect it to be HUNDREDS of games by the end of the generation.

It does matter, because at 1080p, you can better see the camping snipers in the distance. Or some guy trying to hide somewhere.

It definitely means something.

Every bit the ESRAM leaves on the table, increases the ~50-400 percent power difference the PS4 holds over the Xbox One.

If you had two cars racing, one had 300 HP, one had 500 HP, which one would win? Easily the 500 HP. But what if besides this raw advantage the 300 HP car also had a wonky fuel line, which might only give you only 1/3 flow on fuel? The 500 HP car would thrash the 300 HP car by far larger margins.

ESRAM is going to be an issue in EVERY GAME. It's something that more experienced devs, in yearly franchise type settings, will get somewhat better with it, but it will always be an issue. As for the medium and indie devs that might not have quite the same time, money, and talent? They're screwed. Which means xbox one owners are screwed.

H0RSE3842d ago (Edited 3842d ago )

@allformats

Some of you seem to be extremely naive or overambitious with this arbitrary idea that 1080p is a "must" for next-gen. You guys really need to understand that although the console are "next-gen" (largely just a buzzword with no definitive meaning) they are still just $400-500 devices, not high end PC's. Some of you even go a step further, and include 60fps in your "demands," as if it's such meager feat to fulfill...To expect nothing but "the best" across the board on such a medium, is pipe-dreams.

I don't doubt that games will release in 1080p, as some games already are, but every single game? Get over yourselves. If such high-end quality is of the utmost importance to where you "demand" that games play a t 1080p, or even worse, 1080p/60fps, as seems to be the case with many, than you should playing your games on the best hardware available - PC. If you choose a lesser medium, than you should except a lesser quality product, it's really that simple. You can point the finger and cry "PC elitism," but really it's just being rational.

Graphics or resolution alone is not some guideline to base whether or not a game achieves "next-gen" status, and if you think otherwise, then quite frankly, you're wrong. If none of the next-gen games achieved 1080p, they could still easily qualify as next-gen, due to other aspects, whether it be to techniques like AA or AO, more content and features available, new, innovative ideas, higher framerates, higher poly counts, and even sharper visuals. Yes, a game running at 720p, can look sharper than a game running at 1080p. BF4 is a good example of this. Is it running at 1080p? No, not on either system, but both versions are running at 60fps, and have 64 man servers. That is an example of "next-gen" in gaming, despite lacking 1080p resolution.

If it's just pretty games running at a smooth framerate that is needed to justify your purchase, then again, you are on the wrong platform, since we have been achieving this for years on PC.

As for the arguments over X1's perfroance/graphics and it being "more for less," these arguments are misplaced and inaccurate, due to the fact that the extra cost is largely due to the inclusion of the Kinect, NOT due to the claim that you are getting more powerful hardware. Another aspect is the HDMI-in port, which regardless how useless you see it (along with the Kinect) it's still going to drive up the initial cost, so it would actually be more accurate to claim that you are paying "more for more," since you are physically getting more. Do the PS4 bundles cost more than the regular PS4's? Same logic applies here.

otherZinc3842d ago (Edited 3842d ago )

You guys sound ridiculous.

You guys are talking about a 3rd party game, that's made FOR LAST GEN CONSOLES.

COD & BF4 is the exact game for the PS3 & 360 that's upped to 1080p @ 60fps, that's it.

However:

Forza 5 is MADE FOR NEXT GEN and is
1080p "native" @ 60fps: Both On & Offline!
With more features than any racing game Ever.

Yet, you guys refuse to acknowledged that Fact!

I ask you haters: where's Drive Club?

devwan3842d ago (Edited 3842d ago )

"COD & BF4 is the exact game for the PS3 & 360 that's upped to 1080p @ 60fps, that's it. "

Do your homework - BF4 on current gen is nothing like the same game that the ps4 & xbox one will have.

As for f5 made for next gen - that's your opinion. Many people would disagree with that as they believe it's very much built on existing tech.

Well said! I have, and let me tell you....my first experience was when Half Life 2 released. I couldn't believe how good it looked, and that was in 2005. I had purchased an Alienware PC, for gaming and design work. This was before I began building my own rigs. Anyhow, if I played The Orange Box today on my PS3/360, it still wouldn't look as good as it did on my 2005 PC.

Anyone who says it doesn't matter & can't tell the difference may as well stick with the 360.

CRAIG6673842d ago

Are you saying Ryse,Forza 5 etc are able to run on the 360? No. That's why I am upgrading.

Themba763842d ago (Edited 3842d ago )

actually ryse started on the 360 long ago and was ported to x1 not a true x1 title.

DoesUs3842d ago

I* think he's refering to the 720p VS 1080p discussion.

Elit3Nick3842d ago

@Themba76 okay that's a stupid argument, there was no working demo of the game when it was a kinect title, so the only thing that got ported over was it's name. Are you so insecure about your choice of first party launch titles that you have to call a game "not a true X1 title" just because of some made up technicality.

Drekken3842d ago

Titanfall is on PC too, Craig. Settle down.

H0RSE3842d ago (Edited 3842d ago )

@Themba76

That is a stupid argument...BF4 is a PS3 and X360 game, so I guess the next-gen versions won't be any different, right?

And if your argument is claiming that Ryse started development on 360 and was simply ported over to X1, do you not think that any changes/improvements were made? Do you think they just used the 360's resources and left it at that?

andibandit3842d ago

@drekken

True i wonder why i didnt think of that too, oh yeah i just remembered now.......im not rich

Drekken3841d ago

Such an obvious distance in power between the two consoles you really would have to be some kind of Halo nut to purchase the lesser more expensive one.

Panello didn't know the resolution he said you really would have to have been some sucker to have believed that.

Why anyone trusts anything M$ says at this point is beyond me.

VENOMACR12273842d ago

Right because Sony loves you and doesnt care about a profit. They always tell the truth. Keep telling yourself that.

"Lesser" system? Because the specs are lower? I guess all the other stuff that it does or comes with that the PS4 doesn't makes it the lesser system.

WOW!!! VENOMACR1227

M$ really have got you by the balls haven't they, I feel genuinly sorry for you man

mcstorm3842d ago

But the PS4 is less because it comes with less tech. People seem to be forgetting this. The PS4 dose not come with a camera is only using Bluetooth 2.1 and dose not have a HDMI input.

The Xbox one comes with Kinect 2 which is an impressive bit of kit even if you don't want to use it or not. the one also has WiFi Direct and HDMI input.

The xbox one is also built on Windows RT with Hyper-V and xbox software with adds plus points over the PS4 too.

For me box the xbox one and PS4 are priced right for what they come with and what they offer too.

Its the same with the WiiU.

Power dose not make a console the best you can buy as its the games that sell it and this will be the reason why sales well be good or poor.

Look at the PSV for example the thing is a best but the lack of games is the reason why it is being walked all over by the 3DS. Yet the 3DS sales were not as high as people were expecting when it went on sale as it did not have the software people wanted but since then it has been unstoppable.

No one knows if the sales of the WiiU will pickup or if the PS4 or Xbox one will hit the ground running until a few years into there life.

Skynetone3842d ago

there's a reason why ps4 is using Bluetooth 2.1 because its 90% faster then Bluetooth 4.0 when it comes to input from the controller

Pretty stupid quote because a comparison between the 360 and X1 is like comparing a 2000 Camaro to a 2013 Camaro. Sure they share the same name, but the specs are totally different. It's really not that big of a deal. Look at the BF4 comparisons, not that huge of a difference. As developers get more time for games they will improve, just like they do on every system. The games look amazing either way, so to me it doesnt really matter 1080 or 720.

-wub-3842d ago

Of course it doesn't matter to you, you're obviously a fanboy.

andibandit3842d ago

As basic human beings we want whats best. You may have a hard time spotting the difference but you know which one is more powerful.

VENOMACR12273842d ago

@wub

And obviously your a moron. What did I say that was a "fanboy"? Doubt you even know what that is.

@andi

For sure, I know the PS4 is more powerful. Just like the PS3 is more powerful then 360 but if you compare BF4 on PS3 and 360, not a drastic difference.

vigilante_man3842d ago

Of course it matters!

For the past 7 or so years it has mattered to 360 owners that multi-platform games looked very slightly better than on PS3. It mattered to PS3 owners that exclusives wiped the floor with 360 games in terms of graphics (in their opinion).

It mattered to developers that the 360 was easier to develop for (not better, just easier). It mattered to the pro-360 gaming sites (IGN, Eurogamer, to name but 2) that would use any statistic to try and justify better reviews for 360 games.

Now PS4 is much stronger in a very noticeable way and now Sony have proved themselves these past few years with very strong studio games, it all of a sudden does not matter!

It does matter. It always has, and it always will. It matters!

Biggest3842d ago

And that is the ballgame! Well said, vigilante_man.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 3841d ago
Ko_Uraki3842d ago

It matters only in relation to the price. Of course at MS they have to work hard to explain the value of the xboxone. In few words: more hardcore exclusives, more marketing, more games, perfect online...and more applications for kinect. If they don't do it, they have to cut the price as soon as possible.

pompombrum3842d ago

It's more than the price though. For them to consider themselves a next gen console yet still doing 720p is laughable. The price is the icing on the cake imho.

Manic20143842d ago

It's not like they cannot go past 720p, other games such as Forza 5, 2K14, Live 14 etc can do 1080p natively and Ryse doing 900p, but its more likely for the dev's to get familiar with the system and push 1080p by end of next year. The truth is that the PS4 is easier to programme than the X1 hence the difference in resolution.

pompombrum3842d ago

^^^ I do hope you're right. Imho, there should be no excuses for any "next gen" game not to run in 1080p.

H0RSE3842d ago (Edited 3842d ago )

1080p is not some holy grail, official accomplishment that games must meet in order to be considered "next-gen." It is nothing more than an arbitrary technicality cooked up by the community, largely due to moving goalpost mentalities and over-expectations. Games that run at 1080p can actually be "less-gen" than games that do not, based on other arguably more important parameters.

Anyone suggesting that any game that gets released on a $400-500 device, cannot be considered "next-gen" if it is anything less than 1080p, or even more demanding, 1080/60fps, is naive and out of touch with reality, especially considering all the other (arguably) more important factors that can contribute to a game being "next-gen," which is a little more than a buzzword itself, with no definitive meaning.

And for the millionth time - the increased price of the X1 has to due with the inclusion of the Kinect and the HDMI-in port, and nothing to do with a claim that it has more powerful hardware. The increased price has nothing to do with increased graphics/processing power. It's like paying more for a PS4 bundle vs a standard PS4.

pyramidshead3842d ago

Stuff like that for the PS4 can be updated through firmware though but you can't upgrade hardware like that :x. It is very very odd that they didn't include such basic media capabilities though o.O. I'm glad I had no intention of selling my PS3. Will just use that to play movies off of

ruefrak3842d ago

Agreed. I was keeping my PS3 anyway since I have tons of games still needing to be played. And the more I thought about it, the more I realized I never (NEVER) use my PS3 to play MP3s. I have a stereo for listening to music. And the DLNA thing was always so slow or unreliable for me that I started just putting everything on an SD card and copying it over that way.
So while this news originally had me pissed off, the more I thought about it, the less I cared. But I still want an answer on what kind of video files the PS4 can play. That does effect me.

Biggest3842d ago

I haven't used my console to play music since the original Playstation.

Did Sony say that the PS4 can't play movies? Your comment is confusing, pyramidshead.

I think they want to push their music-streaming and video-services. Offering ingame-music but forcing you to get music unlimited is just not cool. I'm glad I am not using the ingame-music feature anyway, but missing DLNA really hurts.

avengers19783842d ago

I haven't heard of anyone canceling PS4 preorders because of the MP3 thing though

ruefrak3842d ago

andibandit3842d ago

Drekken3842d ago

Anyone crying about functionality missing at launch for the PS4 is blowing it way out of proportion. People need a history lesson about the PS3's firmware and all of the killer features we received over the years. Sony met everyone's requests with features as long as the hardware allowed it.

We will have streaming and MP3 soon enough. Shu has already been talking about it with the devs.

T23842d ago

This . I still applaud people complain though , they should let their voice be heard ... Sony has always exceeded expectations for media I remember when I downloaded one update and itwas like "ps3 now upconverts dvd to hd " .... I was like wha?! Awesome!

If we're going to talk in "still to be's" there still could be more studio closures from Microsoft this year as well.

DOMination-1h ago

How much confidence do people have in these games being good though? I hope they will be (especially Avowed) but from what we know of them so far, it's hardly a guarantee, is it?

And even if they do turn out to be good, how much of that will be down to Xbox and its leadership? Most of these games were either sequels to games made before being acquired or started development before being acquired.

And just a note on Hellblade II - it is out in two weeks and unless I'm missing something, I don't see much in the way of previews or advertising from Microsoft. Not ideal for a niche game that looks like it probably cost a lot of money to make. It genuinely feels like another game being sent out to die and then have the studio shut down.

Let’s not pretend Sony is setting the world on fire with its first party either….it’s been crickets from them as well. In fact they even said not to expect any at all this year.
MS is a dumpster fire and Sony isn’t fighting anymore and it shows. I fail to see how this is a good thing.

Sonic18812h ago

MrDead6h ago

So if MS hadn't spent $80 billion consolidating the industry just think of all the games and jobs that would have saved.

MS is a drain on gaming and have been nothing but a negative.

MrCrimson5h ago

not exactly like the studios were putting out good games anyway. Industry needs to restart from the ground up; if games like battlebit or manor lords can be made by teams with 10 people - then there's something fundamentally wrong with having 500 man teams put out glitchy overmonetized crap.

Microsoft Closes Redfall Developer Arkane Austin, Hi-Fi Rush Developer Tango Gameworks, and More

Microsoft has closed a number of Bethesda studios, including Redfall maker Arkane Austin, Hi-Fi Rush developer Tango Gameworks, and more in devastating cuts at Bethesda, IGN can confirm.

Moegooner1d 5h ago (Edited 1d 5h ago )

Hi-Fi Rush studio??? Seriously?? Goes to show quality matters lil to MS.

Worst gen ever. All big 3 battling are for who sucks the most. They just keep one upping one another.

-Foxtrot1d 5h ago

This does feel like a “quick Sony is getting shit on for Helldivers, let’s announce it now to minimise impact”

thesoftware7301d 5h ago

That is silly. Let's say there is some weird conspiracy. This announcement would effectively take ALL the attention away from the HD2 situation, especially since there is no longer an HD2 situation. I don't think anything will minimize this impact.

Tacoboto1d 5h ago

... so they announce it on a Tuesday? 36 hours after Sony cleared up everything?

You people care more about the next conspiracy than anything else.

Nevermind that Sony followed the golden rule of minimizing impact by announcing horrible news on a Friday.

Eonjay1d 5h ago

The constant weekly weird Sony drama is part of the industry's problem. Everyone else feels they can get away with murder. Also, what is the point of spending all that money if you just start shutting studios down. And... Redfall wasn't Arkane's fought. Microsoft new the shape the game was in but needed something for GamePass after a whole year of no releases into the service. Them taking it out on Arkane seems really disingenuous and distasteful. And WTF did Tango do? Didn't Todd just release a statement saying how he would never retire. Fire his ass.

romulus231d 5h ago

Well if that was the reason for the timing it didn't work.

darthv721d 4h ago

wow... i did not have them closing Tango and Arkane Austin on my bingo card.

Hofstaderman1d 4h ago (Edited 1d 4h ago )

Yes it does. Arkane Austin I can understand but Tango Gameworks made an excellent game in Hi Fi Rush.
On review, it want really all on Austin for Redfall and its failure, they were forced to make a multiplayer games when their expertise was always single player driven first person games.

On another note, I would like to see Microsoft buy more studios and do more shadows drops on subscription services like they did Hi-Fi Rush. It's great for the industry I was told by people on here.

Einhander19721d 5h ago (Edited 1d 5h ago )

10/10 deflection, the ol' Sony too deflect...

Let's not discuss the fact that PlayStations struggles have largely been caused by the fact that game pass has reshaped how consumers spend causing them to spend less as they play what is on subscriptions and don't buy games as much because they either have become subscription gamers or they fear the game will come to a subscription so they don't buy things.

And it's not just PlayStation, the whole industry has been effected, many big studios are struggling across the board to match sales targets from pre-game pass releases which is especially apparent in things like sequels.

Heck the best example was Microsoft's own Starfield which should have easily blasted past 10m sales by the end of 2023 going by sales of similar Bethesda games yet was only able to achieve 3m which of course was almost entirely on Steam.

Moegooner1d 5h ago

Or maybe it's because Sony hasn't released multiple worthwhile SP games like they normally do each gen and the ones they did released actually sold well.

Layoffs aren't because studios are struggling, but because major publishers want to maximise profit gains.

Profchaos1d 5h ago (Edited 1d 5h ago )

Absolutely it's a service that's changed the way we view and consume games overall for the worse games have little value when they are part of a sub and become disposable doubly so if they are a day 1 freebie often it's the kiss of death for a game to be day 1 on gamepass as PlayStation players look at it like why do I have to pay 60 dollars for back 4 blood, payday 3 or outriders it'll be on PS plus soon enough and funny enough those games always fail to meet expectations sales are poor and longevity is poor.

When I see a game get a day 1 tag outside of first party my first thought is always something is wrong with it and it can't stand on its own feet so the publisher has made a deal to recoup development cost.

Even first party games have dropped in quality noticeably so since gamepass with gears 5 being the only good release I can think of since gamepass started

Petebloodyonion1d 4h ago

Wasn't aware that Gamepass is available on PlayStation.
Or are you telling us that a service from a console lacking in sales is so great that it affects the morale and buying habits of ppl lacking access to the service?

Also pretty sure that saying all of them competing for who sucks means the whole industry and not just Sony and MS.

Nitrowolf21d 5h ago (Edited 1d 5h ago )

This is what people online want. They just don't know or understand it. So many have warned about consolidation, and exactly what they have fear has been happening

This isn't the end, expect more bought out studios to be closed in the next few years

Hofstaderman1d 4h ago

Spot on. All in the name "growth" to appease investors and shareholders. Can't sustain the lie though...it will always implode as illustrated by these closures. Applies to MS and Embracer.

TiredGamer22h ago(Edited 22h ago)

This. ^

Publishers are slowly mitigating all development risk since every new big/medium budget game has become too big to fail. Games are too expensive to make and the profitability for titles rests on a hair’s edge. When you need to sell 5 million copies of a game to be profitable, you know that we’ve turned a new page in gaming. The real victims here are the smaller studios/games that bring so much character and variety to the industry, like with Hi-Fi Rush.

It looks to me that Hi-Fi Rush did not fulfill financial expectations for moving the GamePass needle, and the sales from the PlayStation port experiment did not measure up either. So it gets the boot.

Sad day and era for gaming.

notachance19h ago

yeah smaller ABK studios like Toys For Bob are now in dangers

notachance1d 4h ago

I just don’t know how the hell a company that can spend $67b to purchase a publisher decided that it’s okay to close the studio that produces their best game last year.

Whoever the higher up there that decides this is completely out of touch of how the game industry works, the damn xbox division as a whole would’ve been closed already if they weren’t sustained by other MS divisions.

shinoff21831d 4h ago

I got in an argument with someone on reddit and they weren't haven't that Xbox isn't propped up by other divisions argument. They swore up and down that Xbox was pulling its own weight. I just stopped after a couple back and forths

TiredGamer22h ago

Didn’t move the GamePass needle and the PlayStation port couldn’t save the return on investment….

dumahim1d 4h ago

So this is what happens when you're pleased with the sales and investing in the studio? Good guy Phil at it again.

Sonic18811d 3h ago (Edited 1d 3h ago )

Idc about their shitty excuse and "reasons" they're a incompetent company, plus all their Xbox fanboy influencers are dwindling I noticed. How many excuses can you make for a company like MS? Consoles are down and they're losing their own fanboy influencers also. That's all they had to cheer lead them now they're leaving them. It was so easily predictable that game pass was never going to be able to support all these studios.

If Microsoft can't win they are going to burn it all to the ground...

Barlos1d 4h ago

Agree but gamers didn't ask for people to be out of work.

VenomUK1d 3h ago (Edited 1d 3h ago )

@Barlos They indirectly did. Every person who made a wish list of who Microsoft should buy next and were sending tweets to Phil Spencer and Xbox with proposed studios, played a part.

The saddest part is the studios were closed because of the underperformance of their last games, and if they had been given a chance then their next games could’ve been great and succeeded. But it is the same old Phil Spencer Microsoft problem which is not giving them a chance, and that’s why he is not able to manage game studios.

VariantAEC1d 3h ago

Yeah they did. Just because they refused to see what everyone with a brain was telling them doesn't mean they didn't know. They were told, they should've put up a fight and they didn't. This is the result. But who knows even if MS' fans weren't such boot-lickers, MS could've carried this out against their fans wishes anyway. Unfortunately, we have the hardcore MS defense bots running to deflect from any bad news and maybe, just maybe, MS felt empowered to do more damage as a result of their fans cheering this all on.

anast1d 2h ago

They sold themselves out. Once people buy you they can do what they want. None of this should have been a surprise. When companies get bought out, they eventually get dismantled.

shinoff21831d 4h ago

Xbox fans were to busy daydreaming of Ms curbstopping Sony they didn't look at the big picture.

Einhander19721d 4h ago

Not disagreeing at all.

I want to add that from the day Microsoft announced game pass, before they even started buying up studios it was obvious that game pass wasn't going to be able to support itself.

It was so dumb that they doubled down on it by spending 100B on a service they knew only existed through subsidization.

They should have realized there was no way that adding massively more costs on a subscription they were subsidizing was certain to fail. Especially after seeing how it had devastated sales across the platform as a whole.

Heck by the time this generation started during covid when the console sales were similar PlayStation was already outselling xbox on multiplatform games 8:1 yet they still doubled down on it.

This is beyond wrong. Like wtf!? Especially Tango Gameworks with Hi-Fi Rush. I've heard nothing but good things about that game. Just because Arkane Austin screwed up one game release doesn't mean you need to close them. It sounds like they were forced to do a multiplayer game when they're a single player studio. They could have made a Prey 2 or some other game next.

Just wow awful news.

Einhander19721d 5h ago

Apparently PlayStation owners didn't buy enough copies of Hi-Fi Rush...

romulus231d 5h ago

"Xbox says Hi-Fi Rush was a success "in all key measurements" amid rumors of poor sales. Following rumors that Tango Gameworks' Hi-Fish Rush didn't meet sales expectations, Xbox marketing VP Aaron Greenburg is defending the "break out hit" as a success by all metrics."

According to Aaron Greenburg it was a success so they shouldn't have even needed PlayStation owners to buy it. That being said, I bought it and really enjoyed it, it's a great game. Shame MS closed them down.

RpgSama1d 4h ago

@Romulus23

All lies by the Green Bug, that just means that a lot of people fired bullets or whatever in the game, that's the key measurements they care to share.

Tango did NOT deserve to be closed down, they have not released a single bad game.

Crows901d 4h ago

That's usually what happens when you don't release it at the same time as other platforms....same thing happened with tomb raider reboot sequel. MS got exclusivity for a year and then when it came to PlayStation it barely sold. Nobody cared anymore.

shinoff21831d 4h ago

Still waiting on the physical release pre order window

VariantAEC1d 3h ago

Well... I did my part. Hi-Fi Rush is a good game, but I don't think its MS' style. We don't really know how well it did or didn't perform by the numbers or whether it broke even. This could just be another MS blunder.

Elda1d 2h ago

Exactly. MS purchasing a 3rd party studio & keeping games off of other platforms probably hurt them in the long run, then finally putting Hi Fi Rush on PS which in turn PS fans probably didn't care to buy & support Hi Fi Rush after a year later of release. Hi Fi Rush was released on Gamepass so it probably never really made any money selling solely.

Eonjay1d 1h ago

@romulus23

Let's hope it didn't sell well because that would make this worse. Also I could have sworn I read an article about their next game in the works.

Seraphim23h ago(Edited 23h ago)

I was wondering if that played any part considering the timing, though, XB claimed the game to be a success last year only on XB & PC. Regardless MS f'd up there too. They shadow dropped HiFi on XB/PC last year at the perfect time. This year when they released on PS not only had the hype died, but there were so many solid games available the first 3 months of this year to play.

I almost bought it on PC last year, but now that it dropped on PS I just have far too many games to play to bother...

If MS needs PS and even Switch sales they need a better strategy. At the very least a release date where players are more inticed to buy said game. The problem is always going to be that if they want exclusives the hype for these games will be dead a year later. The exceptions might be some of their heavy hitters.... 2 cents

Angyobangyo10h ago(Edited 10h ago)

PS and PC owners probably bought more copies that Xbox owners.

I can only imagine the little amount of revenue both games generated, sent straight to gamepass and excluded from the largest current gen console userbase. Not to say both games would have done well if they were on PS5 too, but you heavily damage to a games revenue when you put it on a stagnating sub service for a poorly selling console, can't really see people going out in droves to sub to GP to play this.

shinoff21831d 4h ago

Gamepass subs(most of Xbox players) don't buy games all like that so it's not sustainable. It's reality.

RaidenBlack1d 5h ago

Yea Austin made one of the most creative game of last gen with Prey and were forced to take risk with Redfall and now the whole studio is being closed.

Aphrodia1d 4h ago

Yes, that Tango gameworks/ Hi-Fi closure was an eye opener for me as well. Neither played it nor was interested in it myself but all I heard was everyone acting like it was the second coming of guitar hero or something.

I don't know what else to say other than modern gaming is an overwhelming sea of mediocrity and there's not enough voices of reason speaking up and saying that most games made these days are just not very good.

shinoff21831d 4h ago

Your playing the wrong games then. There's always been shovelware type games. Going back to wii, snes, nes, ps1 Xbox og. That's a bs blanket statement. As an older gamer since atari days I'd personally say this is a great time. If you can't find anything to play. That's on you

With all that said in no way or form am I speaking of multi-player games, gacha, or whatever. I'm strictly speaking on single player games.

Aphrodia1d 1h ago

you are hilarious. trying to validate your comment by excluding over half of the games out there today. Pathetic man.

Neonridr1d 3h ago

I'm more devastated at the loss of The Evil Within.

Chevalier17h ago

Wait I was told Xbox had great engagement numbers?! Some Xbox fans said they bought games when I told them Xbox customers don't buy games?

So Xbox bought studios to keep games off other platforms and forgot they conditioned Xbox customers to not buy games. Whoops.

So anyone else think Outer World's 2 dies 🤔? I'm thinking a small game losing out on Nintendo and Playstation gamers buying will kill this IP. But it's okay Xbox fans can get more COD! Halo, Gears and Forza! Woot that's a 'win'. Yay Gamepass FTW

Can't wait to see the usual try spin and play this down. So much for the heroic MS and Phil saving these studios eh.

Eonjay1d 5h ago

By the end of the day IGN will be talking about how this is right for the industry. Don't worry, Microsoft's PR is making the call now.

RpgSama1d 4h ago

Tango did NOT deserve to be closed down, they have not released a single bad game, and I'm sure Arkhane failed just because they were both rushed and pressured into making a GaaS game they had no experience in doing and no support to get it completed out of the gate.

PrinceOfAnger1d 5h ago

Not a big deal only hi fi rush was good

Sony has closed
Manchester studio
Japan studio
Pixel opus
London studio
Ready At Dawn ...

RupeeHoarder1d 5h ago

The difference being Sony has a large group of other studios that have done something positive. Microsoft just closed the studio to the only good game they released in the past year (Hi-Fi Rush).

CrashMania1d 5h ago

They all suck as well of course. But MS spent 10s of billions on these publishers for mass consolidation, every made a song and dance about how MS would save them, using their endless Windows, 365 and Azure money to keep them open forever and how Phil was some hero.

Nothing is safe unless it makes money, even for MS.

romulus231d 5h ago

It is a big deal.

Microsoft has closed
Fasa Studios
Digital Anvil
Ensemble
Lionhead Studios
Press Play
Arkane Austin
Tango Gameworks

Einhander19721d 4h ago (Edited 1d 4h ago )

Wow how far back do you want to go back.

Lionhead Studios
Aces Game Studio
BigPark
Carbonated Game
Digital Anvil
Ensemble Studios
FASA Studio
Good Science Studio
Hired Gun
Microsoft Studios Japan
Microsoft Studios Victoria
Team Dakota
Xbox Entertainment Studios
Xbox Live Productions
Lift London
Access Software
Salt Lake Games Studio
Twisted Pixel Games
WingNut Interactive

And more before this, this was just their cuts during xbone era that Phil cut while he was at the head.

And some of those PlayStation studios were merged not closed, most of the UK studios were folded into each other.

Japan Studio was renamed to Asobi not closed, aAsobi was an internal team of Japan Studio the "closure" the press misinformed people about was more or less a name change, the studio is in the same building and when the change happened less than 5 people mostly leadership positions chose to leave the studio to form Bokeh Studio, which still works closely with Sony.

And even if your deflection stood on it's own, Microsoft spent 3 Billion 3 years ago almost to the date to buy Zenimax and has already closed 2 of it's biggest studios and decimated Zenimax's support studio structure.

It's no wonder Todd Howard was talking about "more frequent releases" and letting other studios make their IP's games. The days of big budget huge Bethesda games is over...

In fact sadly Microsoft has ushered in the end of big budget gaming as we know it with their obviously unsustainable subscription industry change.

And I feel fully confident that this isn't the end of studio closures from these recently purchased studios.

Abnor_Mal1d 4h ago

Ready At Dawn was never a Sony owned studio, and only made a few smaller God of War games and a Jax and Daxter spin off, and of course The Order1866.

They are currently owned by OcUlus Studios.

MrDead1d 4h ago

How many times has MS fired Bethesda staff since they purchased it? I think it's been three rounds so far

BehindTheRows1d 4h ago

Deflection is the finest form of delusion.

shinoff21831d 4h ago

London studio what have they made recently. Really the worst one was Japan studio. That sucked.

In reality though your deflecting. The fact of the matter is Ms just closed the studio that made their highest rated game in years. That's insane.

Hofstaderman1d 4h ago

Also many of those staff were absorbed into other studios.

VariantAEC1d 2h ago (Edited 1d 2h ago )

Ready At Dawn was never a PS first party studio.
Manchester was closed and it was proposed that London should be closed, but their website is still up with no news about it being closed on their official site anywhere. So it's possible that the proposed closure just did not happen to get fufilled. Meaning London Studio *MIGHT* still be open running lean.

Edit: Japan Studio was closed with some staff making up the new Asobi Team Studio who's first title was the PS5 pack-in game "Astro's Playroom." Pixel Opus was closed and not replaced or spun-off their only games were Entwined and Concrete Genie they also helped publish Journey according to Wikipedia.

Chevalier17h ago

Man you got crap info

Sony never owned Ready at Dawn. It's now owned by Oculus.

Phil needs to step down. What kind of usual spin do you want?

More and more people lose jobs but the people at the top stay the same. Hardware sales tank despite billions and billions spent. The math is plain and simple.

Sonic18811d 3h ago (Edited 1d 3h ago )

I'm still trying to figure out what was the real reason to acquire Bethesda for millions or Billions of dollars if you're closing down studios 🤔 What were their true intentions 🤔 I mean do Microsoft really want to be a third-party publisher? It sounds like they're confused.with their future in gaming

VariantAEC1d 2h ago

@Sonic1881
To rape each studio for their sweet succulent ultra-valuable IP. This is Microsoft's favorite past-time.

Microsoft Survey Asks About Handheld

A new survey from Microsoft has further hinted at the possibility of an Xbox handheld being in development.

This is definitely happening, I just hope they have 2 versions one with a much bigger screen.

GamerRN7d ago

I'll be happy with this, and a PC console hybrid that rivals anything we have power wise

Number1TailzFan7d ago

The problem with bigger devices is playing them on your side in bed, Vita and before that was fine. Since the Switch you gotta have a gooseneck holder & controllers detached so you can lie down holding them, or your arm will quickly get tired.

1Victor7d ago

@thesofware: “A much bigger screen than what?”
A gaming laptop 🤷🏿🤣

Kosic7d ago

Than the screen originally planned...duh... :D

darthv727d ago

it kinda already did... https://www.xbox.com/en-US/...

They are just gauging interest in one of their own.

crazyCoconuts7d ago

A Xbox version of Logitech G-Cloud?
I mean, why bother? Not like the G cloud is flying off shelves and what would Xbox add to make it better?
They're surely not going to create bespoke architecture here and there are already a few Windows handhelds out there. I have little confidence in their ability to put together an attractive UI in the way Steam did. So I doubt anything will come from this.

KicksnSnares8d ago

Day One buy for me if they'll make a dedicated handheld device.

darthv727d ago

i have that logitech g-cloud. Its a sweet little piece of kit. I like that it can also install games from the play store unlike the other android based handheld.

mudakoshaka7d ago

It sure is! Don't understand why you get the down-votes. Whoever does not like the G Cloud must have been dropped down a well, head first, when they were of a younger age.

PassNextquestion7d ago

I wonder if Microsoft will perform better in Japan if they do actually make a handheld since everyone says handheld and mobile are king over there.

TiredGamer7d ago

This looks like the future of the game industry... all three platforms with a handheld option.

I wonder if the Playstation Portal is a technology test-bed/prototype for a future Playstation handheld?

rlow17d ago (Edited 7d ago )

It’s a possibility but I can’t help but think would that be the best way to go about it? Though it would give you data on how much it is used and game type. It’s still not a true portable device and so people approach it differently. I think that data on phones, tablets, and of course the competition would give a better indication.

But I really think if Sony is considering a new PSP that could play ps5 games, now would be the time to dive in. Honestly, if they do this, it would be huge.

Traecy7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

Doubt if Sony PS wants to support a new handheld with first party games. Something they lacked with the Vita. What they should do is have a handheld that is like the PS Portal which can play all games but play those games on the go as well as at home. Something like that is a better investment.

TiredGamer7d ago

Agreed that you will probably never see a separate line of games specifically for the handheld (a la PSP or PSVita). The modern economics and expectations of game development make that cost prohibitive. What makes more sense is if the full-fat game on PS5 or PS6 has a special "handheld" profile that is automatically optimized for the lower spec handheld. There would be some significant compromises compared to the bigger console variant, but it would be the same game overall and would only require a single purchase.... somewhat what the Switch does with a lower resolution when playing handheld versus docked.
