Is Sony aiming too high with goal of 5 million PS4 systems sold by March?

Sony says they plan to sell 5 million PS4 systems by March 2014. Is this really an attainable goal using past console sales and the state of sales in the gaming industry right now? It very well could be but Gimme Gimme Games discusses the possible bumps in the road for Sony on this quest.

Is that you Woody? Sorry had to make a Toy Story reference.

TomShoe3872d ago

They'll sell as many as they can produce.

Kingthrash3603872d ago

u can never aim too high when you have this level of momentum and hype.....basic gamer physics .

xKugo3872d ago

If anything they'll probably sell even more than that just because so many people are excited for the PS4.

"Reach for the skies"

The only ones who are going after the clouds is Microsoft.

P.S I believe that Sony is being modest with their predictions and I believe that they will be able to surpass their goal by a little.

I honestly thought that was to low. I'm assuming they'll pass that mark and say how it exceeded expectations.

GribbleGrunger3872d ago

If I was a betting man, I'd say that's exactly what they're going to do. I'm going to take a wild guess here (proving they can produce enough consoles) and say 6 - 6.5 million.

Ezz20133872d ago

well, seeing as how ps4 is doing so well in pre orders and pretty much most gamers want it so bad

i think you are right
ps4 might even sell more than 5 million

mrbojingles3872d ago

So you really see it being a Wii-like happening? With it releasing so late in Japan too that hurts its chances of hitting this goal too. I understand that the PS4 is a no brainer purchase for a lot of us who visit N4G but does the 90% of the rest of consumers feel the same way?

GribbleGrunger3872d ago

It's not a certainly, I realise that, but something tells me Sony do not want to give any indication of how many they can produce and sell. Look at how vague they've been with the preorders. They've told us it's over a million, but not by how many or even in which territory/territories, they've said manufacturing is going very well, but not given us any concrete numbers, and they've just announced the Asian release, which is surprisingly BEFORE Japan. You have to ask yourself why (and I don't believe the translation issue).

deep_fried_bum_cake3872d ago (Edited 3872d ago )

Think about the fact that the Wii U sold over 3 million in the space of a month and a half after release. That's a console which had nowhere near the hype of the Wii and quite of lot of the non game website visiting public had no idea that it wasn't just a Wii add-on.

If the Wii U can pull those numbers at launch (though they completely disappeared after) then you'd be mad to not think the PS4 could trump that and reach 5 million in 3 more months.

OrangePowerz3872d ago

Well it will sell in Japan anyway.

As for the west, I know plenty of people that supported the 360 this gen and buy a PS4 at launch.

5 millions in 4 1/2 month doesn't equal Wii like sales.

GribbleGrunger3872d ago

Perhaps they know something we don't? China possibly?

joeyisback3872d ago

i think its to low of a number i think 7 million should be sold by march i know 20 friends of my who had the 360 this gen switching and they said alot of there online friends are getting PS4 after launch cant wait for PS4 :-D

T23871d ago

I actually dont know one person getting xbone at launch

Majin-vegeta3872d ago

No last time we heard pre orders are over a million. They could be above 2 by now for all we know.
