Pachter: Nintendo is in a world of trouble

Not all is well in the world of Nintendo, so says Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter.

Citing a lack of third-party game software support for its flagship Wii U and the company simply taking too long to release an HD console, he says Nintendo is in a world of trouble.

I bet that by the time the PS4 and the Xbox One launch the WiiU will either already have a price drop or drop the price before Black Friday (should the next two consoles launch before then) I see the Deluxe version being priced at $299. Now people like "kreate" above me say $200 but that is too low. Also realize that you receive a $60 game in the deluxe version making the console itself (if they decided to sell it that way) $240. A very reasonable amount of money in my mind for a console with the power between PS360 and PS4One. I think the upcoming games will definitely help sell the system and with full support from a few 3rd parties publishers the WiiU could really shine.

PS3 and Xbox 360 gamers are switching to PS4 because they want a taste of next-gen. So what if the PS4 and Xbone aren't backwards compatible? Did you skip the Wii U because GameCube GC was taken out? Did PS3 gamers abandon the PS3 once PS2 GC was gone? Did Nintendo fans skip the GameCube because Nintendo has finally went with discs (several years late to the party), and the GC wasn't BC with those hundreds of dollars worth of N64 cartridges?

Also, eventually with Gaikai (as Microsoft calls it TEH CLOUDZOR!!!!), you'll be able to play PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4 games on both PS4 and Vita over the cloud! That's basically the Wii U Gamepad right there, so it won't be a Wii U only experience once it gets rolling. The Wii U Gamepad will not be offering anything new once the PS4 comes.

Also, WOW! Your last paragraph basically said "Wii U is a next gen console because you get 2 or 3 screens! Devs said Xbone and PS4 only bit better than PS3 and X360."
And have amazing graphics like Bayonetta 2, X, and Mario Kart 8? Look, the Wii U is not a whole lot stronger than the Xbox 360 and PS3. And the PS4 and Xbone are going to be MUCH STRONGER than the Wii U. I can't deny that X looks good, but to think the Xbone and PS4 won't provide graphics* BETTER than that is just fanboy delusions.

*by graphics, I mean technically. If you have a good artstyle, then the game will always look good in any generation. But Nintendo games always go for that cartoony style, rather than something realistic, which is why their games looks so good. But this doesn't let them off the hook. Nintendo always plays it safe by going with ALWAYS going cartoony. They never change their style.

And that is the WiiU's biggest problem: it's not even getting most of the current gen multiplatforms so why even switch to it? All at the same time, next-gen multiplatforms shared between the PS4 and XB1 don't even consider the WiiU as a platform so there is pretty much nothing to expect from 3rd parties in years to come.

It is a console with no present and not future. What is the point in owning one?

You know you'll just get 5 or disagrees from the nintendo fans that preach how the gamepads innovative features or uniqueness justify the extra $50-100 mark up over current gen. Too bad the gaming world is saying otherwise.

And yeah the wii u's specs and it's price point is hilarious compared to the $400 ps4 with it's specs.

Nintendo needs a minimum $250 price point, because it looks like a current gen system(7-8 yr old dinosaurs) to alot of ps3/360 owners.

I agree EA does have some in development, but what I see going on is when the PS4/XB1 get a ton of games from EA, all of which are using the frostbite 3(their new baby). The WiiU version of the game is going to be a crappy port because the games will only frostbite 2(which doesn't run well on the WiiU according to your link) EA will complain again when they don't sell because no one likes a crappy port and that puts us back to where we are now because the last batch of games they released on the WiiU were crappy ports. EA has pretty much one foot out the door already.

wii-u has the same problems as all nintendo consoles, on specs level they are not able to compete with the competition. I know Patcher is wrong more often than not but i agreed with his opinion that wii-u or wiiHD should have happened back in 2010, when wii was still hot and would have gotten a lot of their casual fanbase buying the next machine

now wiiu is no where near as powerful as xbox one or ps4 and 3rd parties see no reason to invest into wiiu. Nintendo home consoles have a long history of not being able to sell 3rd party games dating 20 years back.

I don't think Nintendi is in any trouble but wiiu won't be able to compete with ps4/xbox one. It will be 3rd this gen and that's gonna be considered bad when last cycle wii sold 100 plus million

why isn't GTA5 on wiiu? that's only one of many big games not coming to wiiu and that has to change, Nintendo has a lot of money so why not pay 100 million for the game to be released same day on wiiu as ps3/xbox360 and all dlc exclusive for 30 days on wiiu

Specs have never really mattered. Wii and PS2 were both weaker than the competition.

People don't seem to realize that specs don't matter as much as games in regards to console sale figures. Your example of Wii and PS2 sales is good. But I've got a better one, how much more powerful is the PSVita compared to the 3DS? Now don't get me wrong the Vita will be, and recently has been, selling better later on but that's also a great example of games beating specs.

WiiU struggles are because of lack of games, but they have games coming and if they are good then it will be all good.. PS4 will do as good only if the games are good. Xbox1 will do good if its games are good. In my opinion the future looks survivable for everyone. It's all good.

Times have changed. Specs DO matter these days as people expect more. I had a gamecube and enjoyed some great games on it mostly exclusives (resi remake, resi 4 - until it was launched on ps/pc etc), I didn't have a PS2 (I had PS1, PS3 and will have PS4).

The problem is the timing was wrong for Nintendo and the spec wasn't good enough. It's a last gen system that's all there is to it.

Nintendo need to pretend the whole 'wii' thing was a side line and launch another NEW console as good as PS4 (or better) but with full backwards compat with Wii-U games - then their fortunes will turn, it's not anyone's fault but Nintendos that they stubbornly refuse to deliver powerful hardware since the Wii days relying on the same old IP rejigged over and over... the system is stale and needs a shake up.

The gamecube and n64 were more powerful than the ps1 and ps2. Even the SNES topped the Genesis, unless you consider those obscure ones like the Neo Geo and such. Getting sick of people acting like nintendo started with the wii...

The thing is those games just don't have an audience on nintendo platforms (except GTA 5 that'll sell anywhere). And you can't really expect a racing game and a fighting game to have revolutionary sequels, so bad examples for a valid point. LoZ needs to evolve, and mario needs to get a bit of a rest.

Exactly but specs too... it has to compete with the best third party versions, it's that simple. And for Nintendos part yes they must evolve their beloved IP and tone down the 'kiddy side' for a while. Invent new 'hardcore' ip with Nintendo fun but in a much more attractive/evoloved shell. That would make them great once again and I'd put my money down day one for such a system from them with their games.

I can only imagine how cool a new metroid prime/ 3D would be on a system that could actually do it proper next gen justice (1.5x the power of PS4 say - Ninty could do it now they are out of synch with this gen - just launch a "Super nintendo 128" console or whatever in 2015 and they are back in the game)

I agree about the games comment. The titles that get sequels on other platforms beside Nintendo get blasted for following a formula.

But when Nintendo announces (kind of pointless since it's a matter of time, not if) a follow up with the same characters, similar storyline, if not the exact same with Mario it's hailed as the next great game.

Then beyond just the games, when is Nintendo going to implement online into their games? The new 3D Mario is Coop but local play only, same for the 2D version. The party games are all local, etc. Seriously, they make their games on the cheap, don't add features and don't get blasted when they do it.

Also, where is the Achievement system on the Wii, why not add online play for the Virtual console games? Wow you can play on a second screen, I can do that on my tablet with a Controller plugged in, Smartphone. Oh, they added a save feature. How amazing, lets buy SMB for the 10th time. How about leaderboards too? They are slow at releasing them and add next to nothing to games. Whatever, maybe in 5 years I'll pick one up and test it out. But currently I could care less about games that will be out in a year that I've played before.

And speaking on the 3DS. Nintendo is not in a world of trouble, because the 3DS is on a legendary tear right now. Over 32 million units sold in about 2 years!

Can't compare handhelds to a home console for many reasons which is why the PS2 is king of the home consoles and the 3DS is the king of handhelds.

As bad as the Vita might be, it as either selling the same or more than the WiiU on a weekly basis and further more, when the PS4 will be released, it will get a second chance as a second screen companion. I don't see WiiU getting that same second chance.

You are right about Nintendo not being in trouble as a hardware developer as the core fan base buys enough games on handheld and console to make Nintendo some profits. If the WiiU is capable of doing N64 or GameCube numbers, it will be fine, but at the moment, it's lacking those amazing games the N64 and GameCube had. Where is the Lylat War Sequel? Why not make another Diddy Kong Racing? Starfox adventures? Invest in their own Banko Kazooi style game or Conker? Maybe their own version of Perfect Dark?

They've made a great start with Bayonetta and Sonic, I'm hoping they keep it coming and Nintendo's core fan base invest in these 3rd party games.

Yes, you can compare handhelds to home consoles when it comes to MONEY, which they both make.

If you really think the PS Vita is going to outsell the Wii U over the PS4 being released you are undermining the selling power of Nintendo big titles like Mario, Sonic, Zelda, DKC, and Wii Fit.

The Wii U is getting a bunch of games starting with Pikmin 3 this month. Nintendo is then investing in a new IP: The Wonderful 101 next month.

In October Nintendo has The Windwaker HD, Sonic Lost World, and Wii Party U. November has DKC Tropical Freeze. Then in December you have Wii Fit U and Super Mario 3D World.

All of these games are big franchises that will expand the user base and push consoles.

It's a bit unfair to compare consoles that have been on the market for years to a console that has been on the market for under a year.

Why make Diddy Kong Racing when you have Sonic and Mario Kart? Why make Star Fox Adventure when you have Bayonetta 2 and The Wonderful 101 coming?

Nintendo already has Mario, Sonic Lost World, and DKC Tropical Freeze for this year, they don't need to create another platformer like Banjo Kazooi or Conker.

And as far as Perfect Dark goes, there is no point. Wii U fans can just buy Splinter Cell, Watch Dogs, or COD instead. Plus Nintendo is not very good at FPS. RARE made that game.

The concern with the WiiU is there is so much uncertainty. Will gamers give it a second chance when quality games come through? Can Nintendo sell the unique feature in the gamepad while effectively demonstrating the other benefits and games to consumers (there is stuff like TVii most probably don't know of).

There is always the possibility the WiiU flounders despite getting good 1st party titles. Also at what point is the install base large enough 3rd paties will invest in high quality WiiU versions of core games found on PS4/X1 (that aren't released several months after their release on ps4/x1)? Nintendo has a lot of ground to cover, they need to put out some killer TV adverts that really highlight the WiiU's awesomeness

The fact about backwards compatibility is that consumers voted with there wallets, with PS3, which offered b/c for 2 gens.....Sony's ENTIRE range of games for PS1 & PS2, which meant literally thousands of games that would run 100% perfect on Sony's new hardware, due to the fact, it had the PS2 emotion engine included inside the box, along with the Cell......And fact is, ALL PS3's still offer partial b/c anyhow, as they all play PS1 games.
What was Sony asking for ALL this alone, a mere $100-$150 higher price tag than MS's featureless 360.
And I'm not being a fanboy, because what I mean by that is, 360 did not have any form of proper b/c support, but instead had emulation that supported barely any of it's range of original Xbox games, so even though MS vowed that FULL b/c was the plan with 360......it was abandoned pretty quickly. So, take PS3's FULL perfect playback support of ALL past console titles, then add the fact that Sony included the still ultra expensive Blu-Ray support, Wi-Fi, 40gigs extra hdd space, Bluetooth, a HDMI port, not to mention a awesome FREE online service, & all are things that the 360 did not offer....although they eventually "copied" Sony & added the HDMI port.

Onto Nintendo......they really have failed to capitalize on the time advantage they've had. The problem is, people see a p1ss poor little rack of games on some thing called the Wii-U, which has no real common ground with Wii, other than name, & they look next to that & see rack, upon rack, upon rack of games for both 360 & PS3, & the fact you can buy one of these 2 for almost half the price of Wii-U, not to mention that with those deals, many stores have packages with 3-5 top notch games included with the machine, as opposed to Wii-U with some demo disk of mini games that shows some of the ways the gimmicky controller can be used.

Add to that, that Nintendo's inhouse Wii-U games, are really unimpressive, & even there E3 lineup was the same old crap, & the new 3D Mario was a bloody 3DS hand me down, then we move onto 3rd parties & every damn game is an already released "OLD" PS3/360 title & that is all the store shelves are littered with, not to mention, even upcoming Wii-U titles are PS3/360 slops. I mean, the only 3rd party exclusive, that they have is Bayonetta, & as impressive as that game looks.....it's just not enough.
I have barely touched my Wii-U, as all the greatest games are on PS3 & 360.

You're incorrect. Nintendo killed at e3! Every Wii U game shown looked superb and looked extremely fun. You might not have liked those games but true Nintendo fans are waiting to play every one! Mario Kart 8 is what Nintendo fans want it looked gorgeous and for someone like me a million hours of fun. Super Smash Bros. 4 Looked gorgeous, super fun and for me that's what I'm waiting for, that's what I want to play day one. I wouldnt go as far as saying they are in a "WORLD" of trouble. The Wii U in my opinion has an immense amount of potential. That potential just HAVE to be used and explored propperly. Zombie U and Lego City Undercover is prime examples of 3rd parties using some of the consoles potential. As long as 1st and 3rd party titles keep using the console and gamepad's potential, the consumers will support the system. At the moment the line up for the rest of the year looks solid, Nintendo needs to keep the momentum going. The Wii U has been SLOW out of the blocks, but it will start to jog during the next few months. The indie support is also welcomed immensely. Lets hope the 3rd party devs can scale their games down to the Wii U and still implement unique features with the gamepad.

What's going to be interesting is later on when PS4 and Xbox One are released if they don't sell like everyone thinks. At first they will sell like crazy as the biggest fans get them but lots of people may wait to see how it goes, what games come out, what kinks need to be worked out etc. 360 and PS3 did not have great launches when they came out. At that time Wii U is going to have big releases!

I think that this guy is just angry that he was expecting Nintendo to release an hd console in 2009 and they didn't, and so he is still butthurt that he was wrong. Now he thinks Nintendo released a console that was only intended to compete with PS3/360 and so will be overwhelmed, when in fact the Wii U was designed to compete with future consoles. Even though Nintendo doesn't even really compete with anyone besides themselves.

I think patcher should be more concerned with his beloved Microsoft Xbox One. PS4 and Wii U are the greatest combo for for first party games. I wonder if Microsoft will have another disaster RROD again..

I think if Nintendo does struggle it will be more on the lack of online support from them, even though Sony gets more criticism from the public with support. Nintendo always gets a free pass for some reason when it comes to online, but with this new generation it will hurt them the most this time around.

My guess is that they like their games to be nearly perfect (almost no bugs) and when introducing online creates new uncontrollable variables that can tarnish their almost bug free video games.

On top of that people give PS3 lower reviews when there was no achievement like rewards in their games, and Nintendo has nothing like that at all with another free pass. This free pass is from hardcore players, not the casuals who probably don't know what these things are.

What doesn't nintendo get a free pass on that the gaming media or it's fans/rivals fanbase will crucifiy both sony and microsoft for doing.

I can't think of anything, sony got murdered early on this gen for $599 and two jobs, ms got it's ass ripped apart recently for the whole reveal and drm decisions.

But nintendo and it's ip's are treated with kids glove in comparison, god forbid someone not praise nintendo as the best developer ever for 25+ yr old franchise remake #569.

Grew up on nes and snes but i don't see why nintendo deserves to be babied, when we treat both sony and ms like full grown adults whom we will punish if they disappoint/anger us.

Just think of it this way. Nintendo Wii U price at $350 dollars with just a 32gig drive, and PS4 price at $400 dollars for 500gig drive. Why should I buy a Wii U when I can get more hard drive space, for just $50 bucks more with better graphics, and state of the art physics? Nintendo will be force to lower down the price anyway. Heck just look at PS3/360 prices now with more Hard Drive space! You can pay 360 for $200 and the 250 360 Hard Drive for $70, and it still would be cheaper than Wii U. PS3 Legacy Bundle has 2 great games(Infamous 2 and GT5) plus 500gig hard drive, and guess what... It is $50 dollars cheaper than Wii U 350 dollar 32gig. Wii U will lose out on both battles, current(enough juice for 5 years!) and next gen! Damn it's gonna get beat down worst than Dreamcast, which actually close to PS2 and Gamecube. Dreamcast was not low in graphics for that generation like Wii U is now, it was different. Nintendo need to give this system great games or wait 3 more years to make another system, but please not a generation behind.

also has free online, full backwards compatibility, and out of the box remote play as well as video chat. That's some pretty decent value right there. I'm a hard core gamer and a hdd has never been a big deal to me. Hell I played on my 360 for years with just 4 gigs

Free online for PS3, but PS4 you need a PS Plus to play multiplayer online( Not too bad it's like buying a game once every year).

PS4 is launching with no big selling exclusives. Killzone is not a huge seller. Call of Duty will be most popular on 360 as always and nothing else in its launch line up is all that appealing. And why should the Wii U be 200 or 250? PS3 still sells for 299!!! wtf kinda logic is that? Lets make a newer more powerful console with a new interface and new features cheaper than a 6 year old console?

When PS4 launches its not just competing with Wii U, its competing with X1, 360, Wii and PS3. That's a lot of competition going into the holidays. Wii U will have ton of exclusives compared to PS4 and share some 3rd party titles with it while being 100 dollars cheaper and most likely having some budles. Id be more concerned with Sony than Nintendo.

Killzone will be a huge seller this year. I bet you. Plus Playstation 4 and Xbox One still have not fully announced their full launch lineup of games. Plus Sony is expected to announce 30 more games, and a few more to announce for Xbox One. You think PS4 is just gonna have 3 exclusives at launch? Keep dreaming.

Sony is in a better position than Microsoft and Nintendo right now, especially for their PS4 being not only powerful than X1, but a $100 dollars cheaper. Nintendo had a whole year head start to release their guns, but 8 months in counting and not a great game in site.

What non sense am I speaking? Unless we're talking Gran Turismo than sony really has no real big selling exclusives, nothing the likes of Mario or halo. Killzone titles have never lit the charts up. Neither has infamous. And the fact is its competing with more than just Wii U, its also competing with One, 360, Wii, and PS3. That's a lot of competition. A lot of cheaper more attractive competition.

And yeah Nintendo had a year head start. Its sold 5 million consoles within that time frame and they have big sellers launching this year. Pikmin, Mario, Donkey Kong, Wii fit. Have you checked the sales of those titles as of late? Aside from Pikmin each of them have outsold infamous and Killzone. Hell Wiifit has outsold every Infamous and Killzone title combined I believe. Only time will tell. But start thinking logically and not like a fanboy and youll see Sony has a helluva battle in store for it when it launches. And since its not backwards compatible with PS3, Gran Turismo 6 will probably hurt its sales as well cause that is sony's megaton franchise

This a very different generation my friend, and I was one of the first to play PS4 and X1 games at E3. Let me tell you this...PS4 and X1 is a force to be reckon with! Wii U will struggle hard this holiday, so get ur head out of the Sand and smell the coffee. 5 million Wii U sold, big whoop! The Wii did better and both systems are struggling with their software having little to no third party support. Nintendo should be the one worrying, because they are not getting a Madden game, FIFA game, Battlefront, Mirror Edge, Destiny, GTA 5, and need I say more? So what about the competition PS4 faces. 360 is now only getting water down ports from X1,PS4, and PC ports when next gen consoles come out. PS3 will get water down ports as well, but still have some exclusives left. Yes GT6 will sell like hot cakes! Especially in Europe where you see true racing fans! Sony Cloud service will handle the playstation library, no need for back compatible, which originated from the PS2 era. PS4 will replicate the success of PS2! You have games on there system that is Free to Play, where are the Wii U games that do this? There is no Wii U game that can do this. You have the ability to not only download a game, you can also download half of the game, multiplayer or singleplayer half the price. Killzone and Infamous is looking change action gaming, so you will eat your words when I prove you wrong!
