Seriously, guys, this is serious.

Ellen Page‘s face is her livelihood, and you cannot simply deny someone their livelihood. How dare Naughty Dog basically steal her face for their super excellent video game?

ND created an incredible game that pushes the boundaries and definition of what makes a video game. I don't think any intelligent person could play TLOU without coming away with admiration for ND. A truly remarkable experience and a game that fully deserves to be called a masterpiece. They may be able to better this game technically, but they'll only be able to equal it in terms of character development, story telling and emotional impact. This game will be discussed for many many years.

I can agree with her statement, sorta, when Naughty Dog first released the look of the characters. Ellie did look A LOT like Ellen Paige, so much that they noticed the interwebz reaction to it and decided to change her look into what is in the game now. This ellie, to me, no longer resembles page as much because that first one is very obvious

Was it coincidence Ellen Page appeared in Beyond and TLOU at almost the same time? When the first alpha screens were being shown, she really looked like Ellen Page. That was quite awhile ago, and not long after, new screenshots showing a much younger and slightly different looking. Also, she has that scar on her right eyebrow, so that makes her look totally different. Beautiful game. At first, you go WTF with the game mechanics, then it really grows on you and the scarcity of ammo with all the empty drawers is pretty funny, exasperating at first but a nice touch to making a challenging and fun game.

While I do agree this game a masterpiece without a doubt, but I can see why some people may not enjoy the gameplay. It's very stealth focus (Which I love BTW), in which case makes sense as it's all about surviving and fighting for your life. While Stealth is not forced on an easier difficulty, there are a few parts in the game where it's forced and can turn some people away. If you don't mind stealth action, there's no reason why you won't enjoy this game. It's f'n brilliant.

Quite simply if you made your living on YOUR appearance and got paid according to that...you wouldn't appreciate if a game stole that likeness and didn't compensate you since they are making money, partly, off of your appearance.

The gaming community cant really be this close minded and intentionally ignorant of what this means. College players are suing EA for this very same thing, and are pretty close to winning and being compensated. Videogames are just as liable, they aren't cut off from copyright laws.

Except in this case the character looks similar to the actor, while in the EA/college players case it is meant to be that person. EA is getting sued because they gave pretty much every player the same stats/background/look(somewhat ) of their real life counterparts and thought it was OK as long as they didn't use the players name.

In this case I don't think Ellen Page was born in 2019 in Boston... With how many people there are in the world, you're bound to find people that look a like.

Even aside from just the face, as I was playing, I just had it in my brain Ellie was practically Ellen. The posture, the personality, its almost like they made Ellie act the way they thought Ellen Page would if she were really behind the character. Ellie does look like Ellen Page, but you do have to keep in mind that Ellen Page was originally going to be Ellie in The Last of Us. Obviously, she was under some sort of contract with them, but later on she went from working with Naughty Dog to David Cage, another Sony developer.

Naughty Dog had started developing the character when they originally showed off TLoU with Ellen Page as the lead so undoubtedly the character was meant to look like her since she was the original actress. After she left the project they changed the character up a little bit, but they had already started promoting TLoU with Ellie looking a certain way so they couldn't make any drastic changes to the character.

The end result is a character that does look like Ellen Page, but too say they ripped off her image is a bit harsh considering she was under contractual obligation as the original voice actor for the character. Obviously, Naughty Dog let her out of that contract so she could do Beyond Two Souls. So while the character does resemble her, there is a real reason for that. I am sure Naughty Dog will sort it all out, but it's not like they where stealing her image with malicious intent.

It's not her doing the voice because she left the project early on and they got another voice actor. This was all back when they first revealed the game and announced that she was going to voice Ellie or was trying to to get her to do the voice. A very short time later they revealed that she was leaving the project to work on Beyond Two Souls and wished her well. I remember they did something at a Press conference years ago to that affect. I can't find it now but this article in the Escapist touches on it a little bit.

At what point at all did Naughty Dog once say she was in the game, she was used as inspiration, or they modeled anything after during their marketing? It doesn't say "Ellen Page" on the box, they didn't go "well the character looks like Ellen Page."

The only reason the connection was made was due to fans of her. And guess what? People look alike.

Remember a long while ago someone sued some company because a random character in the game looked like her? EVERY single gamer was going "the person just wants easy money...." the only reason she is saying anything at all is because the game has been VERY successful. Had it been a failure that no one was talking about, including her PR people and managers etc., she and them would care less. Everyone knows any similarities to real people and events is purely coincidental in films and games. Even if Naughty Dog did use her persona she is not a brand or a logo where she can sue for copyright. Beyond Two Souls had good chatter going on for a while. But The Last of Us picked up steam and went full steam ahead with PR. After it released it really became not only the game of the year but the game of the generation. It's made by Naughty Dog, who most believe are the best devs this gen too. It's very VERY hard for Beyond Two Souls to approach that. It's like throwing grapes at a mountain hoping to knock it down. But who knows, Beyond Two Souls may pick up steam too. When they start throwing PR around and market it... it also could become one of the greatest games this gen too. It's gonna be interesting seeing the Video Game Adwards

I think the possibility exist that when they were creating the game and it called for a young female character that someone at some point said "like ellen paige". At which point one can argue in a court of law that ellie's look was "inspired" by ellen paige but they cannot promote the game like that due to a potential lawsuit that they could easily lose...
now, if ellen paige was approached to actually play the character but turned it down then there would be no argument as to who the character really is modeled after.
