New Xbox 720 – Always-on DRM would be arrogant, foolhardy and ill-judged

If Microsoft was to start its 21 May launch by saying it wouldn’t implement always-on DRM, it could turn a potential disaster into a great PR triumph.

But if Microsoft ignores all the signs, all the rage and all the evidence, it would be one of the most arrogant, foolhardy and ill-judged decisions I can remember.

I agree, but lets be real about something. EA is doing it, Blizzard did it, Ubisoft seems to doing it. These are 3 MASSIVE companies, who don't seem to care what people think.

Godmars2904032d ago

Nevermind that there is only growing consumer opposition to it?

The message just has to be sent one or two times - cause lets face it, companies are so dumb they're bottom line has to be threatened twice - that a game didn't sell specifically because of DRM, and they'll fall over themselves to make amends.

Trying the exact same crap a few months later...

sengoku4031d ago (Edited 4031d ago )

don't worry M$ will be M$.
or is that what worries you?
i'm not

dcbronco4031d ago

Nothing is a problem unless Microsoft does it. Then it's evil.

Godmars2904031d ago

No, because publishers apparently are considering online DRM. Trying to justify it as a gameplay element like Ubisoft with Stray Dogs.

solidjun54031d ago

@dcbronco no you're just a MS sheep. People were pissed at EA for doing it for SIM city. It doesn't matter who does it, whether it's SONg, MS or Nintendo, people are not going to like it.

pass but to impose this on single player games is unacceptable. EA received alot of backlash from Simcity over this. Online pass works the best. If you're going to play online, then a console being plugged in is a no brainer. But if I don't want to hook my console up or my router is out, this are were problem lie.

steve30x4031d ago

Didnt Ubisoft say that their future games wont require always online a few weeks ago?

Tultras4031d ago

And how does the piracy rate for their respective games hold up on the PC??

Yeah.

lonesoul654031d ago

People just like to complain about what they are already doing. Steam, always on, your cable box, always on, and fridge, always on( hehe). If it is as integrated with your TV as some rumors suggest then that part WILL probably be always on. But if you own a game and put the disk in it will probably play just like the original XBOX. Hell, even that is a different beast online and offline...but when I push the power button...it signs right into my account and "online" which makes it pretty much...always online.

Sheesh...stop complaining about everything before you even know the full story.

Tultras4031d ago

They got away with the RROD fiasco, don't forget.

dcbronco4031d ago

Always on article 563. If you've read any five in the past you can skip any in the future. Wash, rinse, repeat has it's limits.

josephayal4031d ago

But I would'nt mind the next Xbox to be Always On. I'm online everytime I play (%80), TBH i Can't wait to get the next Xbox, now I'm just waiting

Microsoft Is Finally Ending Its Focus On Big Budget Gaming Nonsense

Back when the Xbox 360 launched, Microsoft pushed the big budget game as a differentiator. Following all the recent layoffs, it’s clear this strategy has run its course.

Einhander19721h ago(Edited 1h ago)

The Microsoft shill take on the Microsoft causing the death of big budget gaming...

The whole driving force for growth in gaming both technologically, creatively and financially was all nonsense, and it was definitely not because Microsoft ran the industry into the ground with obviously bad decisions and creating an unprofitable business model that massively disrupted consumer spending habits. /s

RpgSama7m ago

First, F**** Forbes and their shill take, I hope the money cleared by now.

Second, Which big budget games I might ask? Microsoft has been in a rut for like a decade now, with no big publisher and developers puechases they would have not released anything in the last 5 years but the new Halo and Forza.

Hofstaderman59m ago

Ah Forbes. One of the prominent MS mouthpieces....

Luc2044m ago

Microsoft is finally... ahhh I've never heard this one before!

Petebloodyonion42m ago

LOL, this article is a big pile of dog crap...
Spencer has been constantly telling ppl that NO they would not go the route of having games like TLOU, Uncharted, etc because Playstation exists and prefers to focus on a diverse portfolio.

How many years have we seen Xbox as no game and we don't want small games like ORI, Pentiment, Grounded, etc.?

That's the real tragedy and why lots of gamers are mad at MS right now
because they have been championing smaller titles and yet fired the ppl delivering exactly what they were proning about.

So no the only nonsense is that MS seems now to be going BACK to AAA popular titles..sorry, I meant refocusing effort on core established IP where broken GAAS might be rewarded versus praised and rewarded work.

Einhander197216m ago(Edited 12m ago)

https://media1.tenor.com/m/...

You read an article cheerleading the end of big budget games and all the other articles about problems and this is what you have to say? That's what you think "the real tragedy" is?

I thought that xbox fans might finally "get it", but no, it seems they don't even understand what is happening and what is at stake.

crazyCoconuts41m ago

Hurray! No more big gam.... wait... what??

Well, anything to make those shareholders happy, I guess. They're all that matters in this industry nowadays.

badboyz0911h ago(Edited 11h ago)

EA stocks haven't been profitable in over 5yrs. They better hope Take-two don't get the FIFA license lol.

How can any Xbox studio trust Microsoft now?

For Xbox’s hugely expanded gaming division, anything that isn’t Call of Duty is now a failure, and that’s a problem

Honestly, If I worked presently for Microsoft's gaming division, I would update my CV and look for work elsewhere...

Simon_the_sorcerer19h ago

I would do the same, because MS will most likely pull-off more stunts like this in the near future...

Chocoburger9h ago

"Now"?

How about "ever"?

They closed so many of their dev teams during the second half of the Xbox 360 era. Have we forgotten history so quickly?

Dummy fake journalists acting so surprised over these recent closures, when this is something that's been going on for well over a decade now with MS.
