AMD launches new G-Series family, hints at future ARM chips

by Gareth Halfacree

On the ten-year anniversary of its Opteron processor, the first 64-bit x86 chip to hit the mass market, AMD has made an announcement that illustrates better than any other how its focus is shifting: a new family of G-series processor for the embedded markets.

Based on the Jaguar architecture - the same architecture that powers the semi-custom processors at the heart of Sony's upcoming PlayStation 4 console - the latest entries in the G-series are based on a system-on-chip design which pairs up to four Jaguar cores with Radeon HD embedded graphics in thermal design profiles (TDPs) ranging from 25W to just 9W. Designed to replace the existing G-series family, the new chips include power efficiency improvements through clock-gating in the graphics cores, a shared L2 cache - another step on the road to AMD's Heterogeneous Systems Architecture (HSA) vision - and the latest Universal Video Decode 3 (UVD 3) combined with hardware acceleration of video encoding - a...

Mark Cerny confirmed the PS4 will use ARM’s TrustZone in an interview (it monitors all the I/O of the system).

It's the secondary chip that manages the downloads and uploads in the background.

The most interesting things to gamers here should be the GPU and the price. 8xxx series GPUs and $72 dollars on the high-end. This should let everyone know that the chips in the next consoles will not be that expensive. Sony and MS will own the chips and shop them to the cheapest fabricator. They will pay no more than $70 for their main APU and $10-15 for an ARM based secondary chip or SoC. These consoles will be cheap and there is no reason to think they will be $500 or even $450. They will launch at $400 and make a profit day one.

Keep in mind that regardless of your stance or interest in this, be it good or bad; the ToS agreement makes it so you can't leave negative reviews once accepted.

Star Citizen showcases the creation of the two brand-new animals coming to alpha 3.23

Land on any planet in Star Citizen currently and you’ll be greeted by things like weather patterns, flora, and very possibly a derelict or two. What you won’t find are any animals, however. That’s going to change with alpha 3.23’s release, as CIG has finally put together two animals to populate certain planets. That’s not quite three, but it’s more than one!
