Lara Croft: The role of female characters in games

A look at whether or not the reboot of Tomb Raider manages to make Lara Croft into a strong female character

Well she acts like a man, and somehow has the testasterone levels to endure beatings cuts falls wile beating up multiple men 200 pounds heavier then her.

Soo its actually not a female role at all, its some other crazy shat.

x5exotic4062d ago

More like she has the lives of a cat seeing how she survives, so she looks and acts pretty feminine to me...

It's much better than just being there for no reason at all (and being ugly) like Elena (haha I love talking crap about her)

Cueil4062d ago

females actually have a much higher natural pain tolerance then men. She's obviously had some serious physical training and this isn't her first rodeo it's just the first one where she's had to fight for real... you never know what kind of person someone is till rounds come down range

crimsonfox4062d ago (Edited 4062d ago )

People seem to be making a big deal about her first kill being dramatic then the game not "explaining" how she continues to kill though out the game. If it came down to it anyone would have to get over it quickly if they wanted to survive. Like you said @Cueil I'm sure she had training before she got there as well.

But I have to say it really is refreshing to have a good female lead in a game. I always played Pokemon games with the chick leads since I had the option. I haven't finished it yet, but I'm really enjoying the game so far.

It all boils down to 1 basic instinct, survival. Nobody can truly and honestly give how they would react when they trigger the "fight or flight" response. Proper training or not, you would be amazed at what you can do when your life depends on it.

I see myself as a pretty laid back person that would never be capable of ending someones life. Not sure how I would react given a survival situation.

I guess a good example of this would be Heavy Rain. The part where you are questioning the old guy. I was in the zone at that moment. I was that detective and as soon as I saw the old guy pulling something out, I didn't even give the screen time to pop up with a command. I just "pulled" the trigger out of instinct. At that split moment, I knew what he had in his hand just as I pulled the R2. It was like a snap shot had flashed in my mind like the scene from Unbreakable when Bruce Willis gets that image of the gun in the guys waist line at the game.

You can take the "prior training" theory and shove it. You greatly underestimate what people are capable of when pressure is applied and the adrenaline starts to pump.

Cueil4062d ago

She comment's about how disturbed she was that killing after that seemed easy

Zabby914062d ago

I think her personality shines not much in combact, but rather when she argues with the secondary characters and during the breafings she sometime does when you find a camp site.
In my opinion she's a great lead, even if we saw little of her weaknesses: still, I didn't expect her to be as extrovert as nathan drake, but i'd love to hear more of her thoughts and see more character growth.

SilentNegotiator4062d ago (Edited 4062d ago )

She wasn't a strong female character before because she made the decision to wear short-shorts as she killed sharks, men, etc...but now that she's been an attempted rape victim, has smaller breasts, and wears my idea of sensible clothing, she's a strong, independent woman!

The Best Tomb Raider Games Ranked

We've gone on many adventures with Lara Croft. With another reboot in the making, Wealth of Geeks felt it was a good time to go down the nostalgia rabbit hole and remember the best of those tomb-raiding thrills.

I do agree that Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness was the worse one 😂 I remember playing some of it and I took it back. That game was just awful in every way. I bought it used at gamestop and glad they had that 7 day return policy for used games 😂

Pyrofire9561d ago

Would it be worth saying why?

ZeekQuattro61d ago

Simple. He's been hating on the Tomb Raider reboots for years. I can't imagine seeing them at the top of a best TR game list let alone being on the list in general sitting well with him because of it.

Zeek

“Hating”

No no, just pointing out how TR mutated into a generic action adventure game losing the appeal of what it once was when it was more about puzzles and platforming over going Rambo, slaughtering waves of enemies

But hey, continue being a dick and speaking about me like I’m not going to see the comment.

MeatyUrologist61d ago

Foxtrot, I'm curious if you have played the most recent games. Sure the 2013 reboot was hugely focused on combat, but each follow up became less and less about combat to the point where outside of a few large scale story missions I don't even remember combat being a part of shadow of the tomb raider. Shadow was so puzzle focused it actually was a bit much for me and I love the TR puzzles.

I still feel like Rise was the best of the series and I was a huge fan of the originals. To me it struck the perfect balance of exploration, platforming, puzzles, and combat. Not saying your opinion is wrong I'm just curious what you think they should have done different. Games do need to evolve somewhat to stay relevant. Would you prefer small linear jumping platform levels like the original?

RavenWolfx61d ago

I would agree Rise for 1 and the reboot as 2. Shadow is a bit high, though.

Sonic188161d ago (Edited 61d ago )

I think Shadow wasn't even develop by crystal dynamics. I thought it was the worse in the new trilogy

Pyrofire9561d ago

That's right. Shadow was developed by Eidos Montreal who who went and made Marvels Guardians of the Galaxy next. (Great game)
Meanwhile after Rise of the Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics made Marvels Avengers. (bad game)

MeatyUrologist61d ago

Agrees. First two are correct but Shadow should be around 5-6.

terstomp61d ago

For me, Legend should be alot higher (along with the other two ). Shadow, I enjoyed it, but has too much has fluff, as modern games tend to do. Playing the remastered series, and apart from the controls, is very good.

jznrpg61d ago

I really enjoyed the first 2 games, Legend and the first of the reboots and the rest I didn’t get into so I never finished.

robtion61d ago

Completely subjective list. I really liked Underworld, I preferred Lara's design. That said I loved the horror/uncharted feel of the reboot. I think all the TR games have strengths and weaknesses. None are objectively better in every way.
