Sony/Microsoft Could Make Nintendo Very Uncomfortable This Holiday

Gamer Living's Will Anderson ponders the implications of Sony and Microsoft's expected next-gen releases, and the effect they could have on Nintendo's newest console.

While I agree with what you are saying, I hardly think it's time to pull the plug on the Wii U.

Remember that even if both consoles launch this holiday season, getting one is going to be like pulling teeth. The Wii U was pretty hard to find right before Xmas, but into the new year there was supply. If the PS4 and 720 do release, there is going to definitely be a shortage of hardware to go around. This leaves Nintendo in a great position provided they have some great software.

I think this Xmas is actually a make or break for Nintendo, they could do some serious damage since the 1 million launch units of PS4's (obviously not a real number but usually each console launches with around those numbers) will be swallowed up in no time flat. If they can have some AAA Nintendo games available, then sales could definitely improve drastically.

Nintendo wasted their head start and E3 conference last year..The PS4 hype is spreading and now people are waiting for MS to respond...The Wii-U spotlight is gone and @ E3 it's gonna be all about PS4 and 720..Xmas 2013 will be split between PS4 and 720 if both launch..

Agree, they should kill the wiiu and do a bc wii and wiiu with a new beast of console to compete with ps4 and 720. Dont waste time, resources and loose income when you already know what sony and ms has. A smart industry knows when to win and know when to fold them. Now is the time to quit the wiiu and do a new console.

I think Nintendo has packed a pretty solid console that can easily compete for a big share of the videogame market. I find these ideas of killing their newest console ridiculous to say the least...

Sales hovering around 120K/mo. WORLDWIDE = remaining third party developers resembling Munch's 'The Scream'. Those are catastrophic numbers, triply so for a new 'next gen' console as yet without any next gen competition.

Zelda, Mario etc. are old and tired and only of interest to Nintendo's core fans and of NO interest to those tens of millions that went for the Wii motion controller gimmick, which Sony and Microsoft have now duplicated, only better. Hardcore gamers are obviously a no show. Mothers showed their preference with Kinect;s sales numbers - nothing to get lost, broken, stepped on, thrown or clutter up the place.

The Wii Y has no future, it's just a matter of how many truckloads of money Nintendo pours down the rat hole trying to prove otherwise.

if nintendo released pikmin 3, wonderful 101 and other games that should be out already they would of been in a better position. But they didnt and now that the ps4 and x72o are in the mix i can now be smart and wait for the wii u price drop that will come because i aint buying no wii u for 350 dollars. ill get it at 250 with a game and the ps4 for 400-450. ill be having the wii u and ps4 only this gen and its smart to wait for a wii u price drop at this point.

I blame nintendo for not releasing more games that people wanted. they just had nsmb wii u with the same annoying music and thats it.

It also doesnt help that the 3ds has the same games as the home console so why buy the wii u if i already got a 3ds with nsmb 2, or monster hunter, or donkey kong country. nintendo dropping the ball with 3ds to by not releasing games like animal crossing and such that should of been out by now.

also you dont want nintendo to get attacked then you yourself need to be honest and not only say positive things about them when they deserve some critism. Thats why nintendo getting hit hard becuase you fans dont say one bad thing ever. no company is perfect so you need to be honest with critism or you will get destroyed worst then ever on forums for your bias.

$249.99 wouldve been a better launch price for the wii u, only reason i say that is because the ps3/360 are close to its specs & u can already buy them for about the same price & cheaper with a library of great titles i think thats why the decline in wii u sales & maybe because it lacks games at this time but we will see how it does later when more nintendos top exclusives hit store shelves.

Oi.. this again. People ~ You really surprise me. Everyone's preaching that Nintendo should scrap the U and come up to something new. - I say no.

ALL consoles have a lackluster start. Remember the PS3's launch? Did Sony kill it? No. Now look at it.
Same with the XBOX 360 - Did Microsoft kill it? No. Now look at it.
And the 3DS. Nintendo didn't kill it. NOW look at it?

The Wii U - like every other console before it, is off to a slow start. But that doesn't mean it's a failure.

Nintendo has yet to reveal what RETRO is working on. By the end of the year, the Wii U will have accquired Wind Waker HD. The new 3D Mario and Mario Kart could also be released at that time. Not to mention they still have games that haven't been revealed yet.

People need to stop worrying so much about the Wii U - like no console has started off on rocky soil before. People are so quick to point the finger at N and judge. Far too early, guys. Far too early. Not to mention the Wii U will still offer the most affordable price, which is a 1-up in a shabby economy like this. Quality games will be out/coming-out for the console by the holiday season. Meaning that consumers will be checking it out.

The Wii didn't have a 'slow' start, people were lined up for a year trying to buy one. I just read Great Britain chains are giving HUGE discounts on the Wii Y trying to move their stock.

Those kind of sales numbers speak to a systemic disinterest in the Wii Y and guarantee FAR fewer third party developers than even the Wii had.

No third party games and Ninendo's in house games get one generation older and staler.

I like your optimism that for sure! But in the grand scheme of things, I don't think anything that Nintendo releases toward the end of the year will be able to offset what Sony and Microsoft will do in that same time frame! Like someone said in another article, it'll be like comparing a tricycle to a Buggatti.

Nintendo should have at least tried to release the Wii U at the end of 2011 early 2012, then maybe at this point in time maybe some of their bigger titles would have already been out! As of now Nintendo will be almost totally eclipsed by the announcement of the PS4 and Nextbox.

Considering its most Likely going to be the cheapest console of next gen on he market, I doubt they will be uncomfortable. Unless Sony pulls a huge fast one and launches the ps4 for the same price (unlikely but it would be very acceptable) then the ps4 is going to be too expensive for most people. Heck I'm nervous about the ps4 price especially after the 600 bucks ps3 launch.

Time will tell but either way the ps4 and wii u sit happily side by side next gen.

Going with near stock AMD = a fraction of the development costs of the Cell plus the Blueray drive costs a fraction of what it did when the PS3 launched. 500gb hard drives are dirt cheap.

It seems to me alot of people wish Nintendo would fail, just like a Celtics fan dosent want the Lakers to win. Personally, I dont think Nintendo have anything to worry about from the new consoles. Nintendo may or may not recieve decent 3rd party support, which remains to be seen, but in truth all 3rd party support does for Nintendo is put them ahead of the other systems and game gadgets available. Nintendos 1st party games alone keeps them relevant and sells consoles. I for one buy Nintendo consoles for 3 reasons.
1. Nintendo always has the best gameplay in my opinion becasue thats where they invest their time and money.
2. Metroid is the one game that I cant get on any other system and until that happens, I will buy Nintendo consoles, for others its Mario or Zelda and so on. (Also F-Zero but that hasnt been released in some time now.
3. Their innovation always gives me something more than I find on other consoles, and even when other consoles catch on, its not as good, IMO.
Truth is if Nintendo was going to fail, they would have failed by now, but they just re invent themselves which is what the greats do.

Parantswill go price friendly which the Wii U maydo for the holiday season and become the defacto purchase over the more expensive newbies as we can see with the current ps3/360 against the wii U.

i thinks theres little nintendo can do now.. with ps4 and the next xbox on its way even with a price drop they will be over looked. with much more superior tech coming to the next two console releases this winter, i think nintendo is gonna struggle greatly, even there handheld may not be enough.. but it is nintendo who knows what magic they will pull out of there hat...

Well the thing that could help the Wii U is that there probably wont be enough 720's or PS4's at launch, if Nintendo has games and possibly a Wii U priced at $250, they could do that, they might be just fine. As it is, even with the troubles they had in January, the Wii U could end up 8-10 million units ahead of Sony and Microsoft's next consoles.

Consumers find their, ''eureka!'' moment with the Wii U. The console's trump card is its BC with its predecessor's software and hardware (Wii). We know the PS4 won't have native BC with PS3 games (though it will through streaming), and the DS3 won't function with the system (Move will, however). And on top of that, Microsoft's next-gen system is also rumoured to be lacking that feature.

It wouldn't be foolish to think that both next-gen systems from Microsoft and Sony will leapfrog the Wii U in hardware sales, but Nintendo would be at fault if that ever did happen. They're (Nintendo) launching a lot of their top system IP's throughout the year, so if the Wii U doesn't pickup its hardware sales at that time, then something has to give [Iwata will be missed :'-(]
