Let say for arguments sake, that Sony does indeed announce the PS4 Feb 20th, for a Hoilday 2013 release.. So, why a PS3 release, especially since it's a timed exclusive for the 360?

Not to mention that it requires an online connection at all times.. I know quite a few consoles owners (360/PS3) who have no internet connection whatsoever.. almost like Bungie is limitings itself in the marketplace.

showtimefolks4085d ago

is it timed exclusive? it didn't mention anything like that on IGN

and its the same reason RS are doing GTA5 for current consoles, you can launch a game with 3-5 million install base or 75-80million install base

also by the time destiny will come out in 2014 both xbox360 and ps3 will be closer to 85-90 million and that's a huge install base to pass up

also its my belief that both sony and ms will go for always online systems, i would hate that but i think that's where this is heading to and its gonna get ugly for those with slow or no internet connevtion

barb_wire4085d ago

Well there's this about the timed exclusive - of course, the contract could have been changed.. but honestly I doubt it - more than likely it was a provision when Bungie left MS.. clause 4 almost at the bottom.

Also, this game is supposed to launch AFTER PS4 and whatever the next box do..

@barb_wire

1. So, why a PS3 release?

Because not everyone is going to be able to afford an upgrade to the Next-Gen consoles Day 1, and there are still 70+ million PS360's out there, so why miss out on all those potential sales by being next-gen only with an install base of 0, and probably no more than 5 million by the end of 2013.

2. especially since it's a timed exclusive for the 360?

It was rumored to be exclusive for the 360, there has been no final say on if this is true or not, but seeing Bungie's history with MS and Activision's catering to MS's money this gen it's possible. That being siad Bungie left MS for a reason to grow, so I don't think they want it to be a 360 exclusive and on top of what does that men for the Xbox1080? If it happens blame that on Activision getting another MS check.

3. Not to mention that it requires an online connection at all times..

We'll just have to see how that works. It's fine for me, but as you said not everyone has an internet connection, nor does everyone want to play online. But that's a choice, and if you don't have the means to play then this game isn't for you. It limits Bungie's audience, but that's their business call whether good or bad.

internet connection because it is mmo-esque with a "living" universe.
ps3 release with ps4 looming over our heads...you got me there

Destiny sounds awesome but I don't understand how Bungie can do their grand vision justice on such old hardware.
Bring it to the PS4 and the NextXBox instead. Surely the current gen consoles are holding it back.
How are you going to travel across the universe to multiple worlds and maps amazing environments ... that all fit on a DVD?

Destiny Made Over $160 Million In Microtransaction Revenue In Less Than 2 Years

Destiny has made over $160 million in MTX revenue, and these numbers only account the data from late 2017 to early 2019.

Sgt_Slaughter332d ago

That's extremely low for microtransactions, especially for a game that's essentially designed around it

LucasRuinedChildhood332d ago (Edited 332d ago )

This was back when the game wasn't free to play.

The figures are from November 2017 to February 2019 (1 year and 4 months).

Based on that projection, the MTX revenue for Destiny 2 likely would have been closer to ~$240m for 2 years.

Not sure if premium expansions are included in that figure either although ... I'd hope that they are though and that most of the revenue was for actual content like Forsaken.

People spend way too much money on cosmetics.

Rude-ro332d ago (Edited 332d ago )

Seasons($10 and just got bumped to $12) and dungeon keys($10 each, two a year) are through the eververse(micro transaction) store.
So for those two years, in order to play a season, you would pay through micro transactions.

Bungie Marathon will be worse since it's designed around it as well

Kurt Russell331d ago

It makes me sad to agree... but at the same time I am looking forward to giving it a go. Destiny 2 is so far in, I find it difficult to figure out what I am meant to do first.

buffig332d ago

I think FIFA alone makes over $1bn a year from mtx

anast332d ago

FIFA promotes a worldwide sport. It should make more money than destiny.

CantThinkOfAUsername332d ago (Edited 332d ago )

Let's compare something similar. Apex Legends and its ridiculous $18/$40 skins make EA a billion each year.

z2g332d ago

For as much as ppl complain how much they hate microtransactions, they sure don’t act like it. No wonder they aren’t going anywhere.

spicelicka332d ago

By "people" you're referring to millions and millions of people. Obviously the ones complaining aren't necessarily the same as the ones spending all that money.

There's millions that purchase MTX and there's nothing we can do about it

I've been thinking about playing through D1 again before it goes away...

CobraKai483d ago

That’s the sad reality of a game like this. I bought it, invested lots of money, and it can go away at anytime. I still think this was more fun than 2.

jeromeface482d ago

prob because 2 is a grindfest slog

spoonard480d ago

That's the bummer of 'games as a service'.
