Wii U's Japan launch hints at its future sales numbers

The Wii U has launched to about 307,000 units in its first week in Japan. This is a little over triple the sales the PS3 had when it launched.

Vita had similar sales then fell off a cliff in the weeks after. Launch numbers are no indication of how a system will do in the future.

Godchild10204167d ago

I was expecting more (Releasing with Monster Hunter and Mario), but this is only a few days of sales. So, I'm not going to look to much into it.

The Vita didn't really have any or that many Japanese oriented titles at launch. Their launch titles were geared more for the West.

MegaLagann4167d ago

True, but the Vita's launch in Japan was terrible. Not in terms of quality, but a lot of the games were already available on the PS3 or PSP and the big exclusive at launch was Uncharted and we know how Japan feels about Western games. Wii U launching with Monster Hunter and Mario will more than likely help keep sales from dropping like the Vita, not to mention Dragon Quest in March will help as well.

metroid324167d ago

I'd agree but this is Nintendo in Japan were talking about so yeah u can probably work out how it will sell going off the first week sales in all regions as Nintendo sells because of quality software.

GraveLord4167d ago

No, it really doesn't.

To put it into perspective....the Vita had a better launch than the Wii U in Japan.

Neonridr4167d ago

lol, the Wii U will surpass the Vita's lifetime sales in Japan within a couple of months.

How many units did the Vita move in week 1 in Japan?

Baka-akaB4167d ago

that's what people are telling you ... both moved around the same at launch . Wich basically means nothing , either way

jmc88884167d ago

...and to put it in REAL perspective you then have divide Wii U/3 to get how the PS3 did.

Kingthrash3604167d ago

Cant look at numbers this early. They look nice yea, but real numbers come after a price drop. Ask the wii....
Ill cop a wiiU when the price drop comes... Well depending on the games that's out by then. I was suckered into buying a wii last time most games played was bowling, Mario, Zelda, metriod. That's it in that order. 4 games all first party. I hope the wiiU doesn't repeat the same patten.

stragomccloud4167d ago

Why wait? 350 is more than fair for a new system. Heck, my last video card alone was 270. 350 is a bargain for new console.

Also, that's too bad you couldn't find any more of the great Wii games. I actually bought more Wii games during its' lifetime than I bought for my PS3 and 360 combined. If you look hard enough, there are some pretty amazing titles.

MegaLagann4167d ago

Did you try to find anymore Wii games other than Mario, Zelda & Metroid? There's plenty of quality Wii games out there it's just that no one has ever heard of them. Like RPGs? Try Xenoblade. Like games with Metroid style non-linearity and gorgeous 2D hand drawn graphics? Try Muramasa. Like games that are hard as hell? Try Sin and Punishment or Donkey Kong Country Returns. Unique but addictive games? Trauma Center New Blood. Those were only a few, obviously there's more. But I hate it when people say the Wii had nothing to play, then name off all of the quality games I just listed and more then they retort with "never heard of it". Well that's your own fault. Granted if you have tried these games and don't like them and or don't like any of the genres I listed, then i'll kindly respect your opinion and shut up.

Kingthrash3604167d ago

Don't get me wrong, I know it had good 3rd party games and these games I've heard of. My real gripe is the whole flailing the wii controller like a Jedi knight thing. I'd tolerate it for the big time AAA games but it really was my biggest turn off.

Baka-akaB4167d ago (Edited 4167d ago )

That's a good list . But you forget one important element most of those game were released quite some time apart from each other .

If you werent a nintendo game fans and owning a wii , there were massive moment of joy , but also harsh and long times of drought .

3rd party support was far from stellar . And quite frankly since when does any console lacked a list of a dozen hits at the end of its life ? Only the ngage so far .

GamersRulz4167d ago

Sony only shipped 100,000 PS3s that sold out immediately. there was a massive shortage because of blu ray diods problem.

Kamikaze4167d ago

its only been out in Japan for 3 days not a week

PS4isKing_824167d ago

exactly. i was about to say the same thing. a week is generally "7" days. it should sell close to a milion for its first week in japan given that monster hunter 3 was a launch game. plus mario and the included DQX beta.

Kamikaze4165d ago

Yup it should sell around I million units in a week thats would be perfect

How Many More Victims, Like Garry's Mod, Will Nintendo's Hurtful Crusade Create?

Hanzala from eXputer: "As Nintendo takes out 20 years' worth of stuff from Garry's Mod, I watch in shock, thinking why it continues to hurt and discourage its fans."

RiseNShine5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

The irony that some of the most disgusting business practices come from companies like Disney or Nintendo, i can't even begin to understand what terrible damage was Garrys Mod making to Nintendo bottom line, imho they're getting pretty nervous about where they're heading in the future, handhelds are no longer something exclusive to Nintendo, from Steam Deck to many others, now you can play the latest games and pay a fraction of the price on Steam sales, so it's up to their exclusives, which just on their own would make hard to justify purchasing a closed overpriced hardware with outrageous price policies (Super Mario Odyssey is still 60 euro 6 years later!), and as a home console they're always underperforming compared to Sony or Xbox.

gold_drake5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

i cam guarantee you, that their exclusives alone is what drives switch sales. they sell in the 10s of millions of copies.

nintendo created their franchises to be sort of nostalgia driven, exclusive only on nintendo.

people will always buy the pkmn games as they always bring in new younger fans amd is family friendly

mario kart, the same thing, mario games in general.

zelda games are system sellers. animal crossing for the casual gamers.

nintendo doesnt need third vame devs essentially. they made sure with the switch and the limitations that they looked more to pc ps and xbox.

its sad, but nintendo is more than fine with what they're doing. they positioned themselves to appeal to the more casual gamers.

but to your point, im not sure why they're doing this rly.

Look at how they handled Nintendo games being streamed or uploaded on YouTube in the past. They killed Yuzu and Citra even when they had nothing to do with ToTK being leaked, not to mention it was basically unplayable on emulation the week it was leaked. Smash Bros tournament, that was fairly recent. They shut down their online services without any care for purchases made. I bought a switch after skipping their last 2 consoles and handhelds but I don't plan on buying anything Nintendo in the future. They take things to the extremes, they legitimately hate their fans. They're honestly right up there with the likes of Acti, EA, and Ubi, only difference is that they disguise themselves as being family friendly all the while being shady.

Nintendo's Massacre Of The 3DS And Wii U Is Finally Complete, Regrettably

Hanzala from eXputer: "The cruel hammer of Nintendo has fallen. Farewell, 3DS and Wii U, you surely brightened my life and many others; you won't be forgotten."
