G4 to become the Esquire Channel, stars comment on show cancellations

NBCU has apparently inked a deal with Esquire parent company Hearst Corporation to take the network in a direction that will appeal more to the upscale male demographic, featuring programming on cooking, fashion, and travel, starting in the first half of 2013. In other words, GTFO, gamers and geeks.

Ugh. I detest this whole thing. First, the dismantling of Tech TV by G4. Now, G4 being dismantled by Esquire.

"Esquire parent company Hearst Corporation to take the network in a direction that will appeal more to the upscale male demographic, featuring programming on ***cooking, fashion, and travel***"

I'm done here.

knowyourstuff4154d ago

They wanted to appeal to gay guys and metrosexuals aka "The audience Spike TV left behind".
Please, those people have a million shows they can watch - every show girls watch.

If you're a gamer now you're stuck with the sorry excuse that is Spike TV.

MurDocINC4154d ago

Thats why Adam and Kevin left.

2pacalypsenow4154d ago

Men turning into women slowly but surely smh

Muffins12234154d ago

Should try to get shows like spike has like 1000 ways to die and have some game stuff mixed in the middle of it and then some show with girls half undressed and then some tech shows and end it off with a ep of ninja warrior and cops :D

"I would have liked to see behind-the-scenes things for video games and/or movies, "art of" type segments, gaming tournaments of all kinds, and more game walkthroughs... but, hey, that's just me."

Fun thing is TechTV did all of those thing.

BrianC62344154d ago

Tech TV was great. Lots of great shows on computers and gaming. Then it got turned into G4 and they ruined it. Most of the time all they show is stupid shows not worth watching.

KozmoOchez4154d ago

to be fair, G4 had those things too before it merged with TechTV, and it played all that on repeat like ESPN news, so if I ever missed anything, I could catch it later on in the day.

I wish gaming podcasts were more reliable and less obvious bias because overhyping journalism isn't getting me the info that I like to have for gaming either

Bolts4154d ago

This channel have been dying for years. No shock there. But ultimately it's just moving on to where this stuff belongs. Youtube.

lionxkami4154d ago

totally agree, im glad to see this crap go

guitarded774154d ago (Edited 4154d ago )

Mila Kunis is so hot, but her nipples are all jacked. It's a shame. It's like playing Mass Effect 3 thinking "this is so good", then you get to the end.

More on topic: G4 screwed itself by becoming sold out to one platform in particular, then when they tried to being more unbiased again, it was too late. Once Sessler left it was over.

Microsoft’s Surface and Xbox hardware revenues take a big hit in Q3

Microsoft just posted the third quarter of its 2024 fiscal financial results. The software maker made $61.9 billion in revenue and a net income of $21.9 billion during Q3. Revenue is up 17 percent, and net income has increased by 20 percent.

Xbox content + services up 62% while hardware down 31%... seems about right with the way they tout you don't need the hardware to play. People can play on their phones or smart tv or other means. I don't hardly play on my consoles directly since getting devices like the logitech g-cloud and ps portal. Which is to also say I have been playing more digital than physical because of these devices.

solideagle8m ago

you should apply in MS PR team buddy, I think you will do a great job in my humble opinion :)

Xbox hardware revenue tanks to lowest point of Xbox Series generation

Profchaos1h ago

I'm not surprised surface is struggling they aren't relevant anymore

XBManiac1h ago

Too expensive hardware when others offer the same or more for less? Good work, Green Team.

SimpleDad57m ago(Edited 56m ago)

"Despite some early successes for Xbox games on rival platforms, Xbox hardware is down by a massive 31 percent this quarter."
"Without Activision Blizzard, Microsoft’s overall gaming revenue would have actually declined this quarter."
"Xbox content and services would have only been up a single percent without Activision Blizzard..."
"It looks like next quarter is going to be a similar story for gaming at Microsoft, too."

That is crazy... so A/B/K is carrying the whole Xbox gaming.
Oh and Microsoft will be fine. Windows, Office and Cloud are growing with each pc purchase.

purple10136m ago

Activision: "we gonna need a bigger rucksack/backpack please"

Microsoft: "why's that"

Activision: "to carry yo' weak ass'

Profchaos7m ago(Edited 5m ago)

Top brass have also wanted to start seeing returns on the 100 billion they have put into various Xbox related moves so seeing more multiplatform games is highly likely especially from abk

It's basically saying that PlayStation is the reason Xbox is afloat right now thinks to Ps5 versions of COD

Why Monopolies In Gaming Must Not Be Allowed

As of right now, there are no monopolies in the games industry, and for the sake of the medium as a whole, they never should either.

thorstein11h ago

Shouldn't be allowed in any field.

Inverno7h ago

And yet the biggest tech companies in America are essentially that. They buy up all the small comps only to kill them off and steal what they have, and if they can't buy em they bleed them to death.

jwillj2k46h ago

Eventually they’ll realize the value is with the employee not the company. Buying an IP means nothing if the people who contributed are let go. They’ll get it one day.

MrCrimson6h ago

tech is different because they buy threats and then kill them. Twitter bought Vine and did nothing with it. Despite people seemingly liking it. Could've had tiktok a decade before bytedance. go figure.

Zenzuu7h ago

Monopolies shouldn't be allowed regardless. Not just for gaming.

MrCrimson6h ago

They buy IPs not talent. That's why these buyouts never work and the IPs die. Right now it's too expensive to develop games - but I expect that to shift maybe as AI tools can make it easier. The best games have been indie games for awhile as big developers fuck their ips to death with "games as a service" -
