Why I Admire Peter Molyneux

A somewhat brief opinion column on why Peter Molyneux is actually a man to look up to.

Quote: "For those who don’t know, and how can you not, Peter Molyneux recently gave an interview in which he broke into tears while discussing previous gaming projects and how they failed to meet the high expectations that he had created by talking them up prior to release.

The interview in this case was for a KickStarter project in which he hoped to revive one of his first games, for the current generation. But mostly everyone just remembered it as the Molyneux cry-fest.

Now at the risk of a few “Leave Peter Alone” parodies, I wish to spend today’s column, my dear readers, dearest of all the gamers in the world (especially those who don’t read these), explaining why I think the ‘Neux is not all that bad. In fact, I would go so far as to say I admire the man."

Ultimately, I'm not interested in visionaries. I'm interested in good games. If a developer can't deliver that, then they're not worth my time. Molyneux is certainly a visionary, but his games fall short. It's as simple as that.

I admire a lot of developers. Warren Spector is one. Deus Ex, Ultima Underworld, and System Shock are all awesome games. However, Epic Mickey 1 and 2 are crappy games. I don't praise those games or give them a pass simply because I like Spector.

The same goes for Molyneux. I love Populous, B&W, and Fable: Lost Chapters. However, all his games since the first Fable have been crap. There's no reason to give the man a pass simply because he once made good games. If my steak is cooked terribly at my favorite restaurant, I'm not going to smile and say "oh well, at least the steak I had two weeks ago was yummy". And I especially won't say that if the chef is constantly bragging about how much better and how revolutionary today's steak is going to be.

I would give this man a pass if he made dungeon keeper 3! But as that is never going to happen, HELP MAKE THIS HAPPEN http://www.kickstarter.com/...
Caught this the other day, Dungeon keepers spiritual successor. this needs to happen.

Irishguy954154d ago

I like his....passion. But that's it, the guy talks to much and simply can't deliver anymore. A good game is all I ask off him.

Griffin48714154d ago

I agree. He talks way too much shit. He should just be a motivational speaker for fanboys or something.

Gazondaily4154d ago

Whilst I disagree with you, + bubbles for a well said post. Also, I clicked disagree by mistake even though I agree with the manner in which you made your post (not that you might care :). )

In sports, we remember players for their best years, not their worst. We celebrate them and remember when they were at the top of their game and we don't expect all seasons to be equal and/or better. Yet in gaming the mentality is often one of "What have you done for me lately?"

Molyneux has been responsible for some of the best games I've ever played in the 90's, and for all their shortcomings, even Fable and Fable 2 were great games that were well received and two games I enjoyed immensely. The man created new gaming genres and even his later work, while it didn't live up to his seemingly inexhaustible enthusiasm for the medium he was working in was some pretty solid work. I work as a developer myself and when Peter speaks, I listen because even if his execution hasn't always been flawless, his vision for gaming is something that has always inspired me.

I'd rather more developers shot for the stars and miss. Molyneux's passion and love for the industry he's dedicated 30 years of his life to is something I will always admire as much as the classic games he was directly responsible for. It will be a sad day for me when Molyneux retires from the industry.

dedicatedtogamers4154d ago

There are some differences here.

Gamers SHOULD have the mentality of "what have you done for me lately?" We are paying customers. Would you prefer the alternative, where a franchise (even an entire genre) stagnates because people are NOT asking "what have you done for me?" and they keep buying the same game over and over? Mario, Zelda, and Call of Duty come to mind.

First of all, it's fine to admire sports star, and of course sports figures are going to have good seasons and bad seasons, but for how many of these stars do you buy $60 tickets each time to see them play? Exactly.

Molyneux is not a sports star. He's not an artist. First and foremost he is a developer who is supposed to develop games. If a game falls short, then it reflects badly on him. If several games over the course of several years fall short, it's not about Molyneux having a "bad season". It's about him failing to deliver a product that lives up to the expectations of the people who shelled out money.

Molyneux may be "shooting for the stars", but he is doing it in ways that are completely irrelevant in terms of making a good game.

I admire his vision. At least he aims high and tries to make truly unique games. He's been failing lately but that happens. *shrugs* I hope he gets back in sync.

Bimkoblerutso4154d ago

I friggin loved pretty much everything he did up until the second Fable, and I could even accept that he's had a bad patch this last decade or so, but the way he's carried himself during those off-years has inevitably lead me to believe that he's just an entitled little whiner that's too impressed by his own past accomplishments to pick himself up and simply deliver a great game that doesn't promise to change people's lives.

I have no respect for a man that obviously can't accept that he's not the industries very own Jesus Christ.

Gazondaily4154d ago

I think why many people admire Peter is because of the enormous passion he has for the industry and his projects, regardless of whether they meet expectations.

He is genuine in his fervour and love for the industry even if that passion doesn't translate itself into the quality people expect from him as a result of his own bold statements.

His recent emotional interview where he essentially cried because of his failings are a testament to that fact.

I admire the man for his honesty and love for the industry more so than the games he has produced. In a world where developers are merely content with spewing out generic rhetoric, Peter feels like he has to go above and beyond the call to really try and drive the industry forward.

In short, he is a visionary with arguably little success. I am not going to be one of the several keyboard warriors who direct hate or insults towards him simply because he failed to do what he set out to do. He really does try hard and for that, I respect him.

Molyneux is garbage IMO. I've never played a game of his & don't feel like I missed anything. Spector is only slightly more relevant IMO also. Molyneux made Fable!?, don't care! Why is this on the PS3 page anyway? Hopefully he keeps his crap on PC & Xbox cuz I personally dodge his games like I dodge girls with herpes. Both are a lifetime disease and nothing good comes of it.

Sorry if I sound trollish, not necessarily my intent. I just get a bit peeved when he's held up as a "pioneer" like that alone should make me love his ideas today. Pioneer= old, & his new idea is to have us fund his old/tired ideas for the same type of game he's been making for 20+ years & still hasn't got it right! I obviously won't be sad if his kickstarter doesn't get what it needs. I think it would be a good reality check about what ppl think about his future of games. Ugh...

/end rant

Gazondaily4154d ago

Well mate, you haven't played any of his games and you go on a rant about how his games should stay on the Xbox and PC then apologise for sounding trollish. It makes it very hard to take anything you have ranted about seriously.

I dont get why you're taking this so seriously when you clearly have no intention of ever playing his games. I suspect it has more to do with the platform his games are on though.

This kind of post and nonsensical and dare I say, very immature hatred is the kind of thing I was alluding to in my post above. Well, each to their own I guess.....

Fallout 4's 'next gen' update is over 14 gigs, breaks modded saves, & doesn't change much at all

We were expecting problems with mod support, but there are a lot of other issues.

isarai6h ago

Wow what the actual hell 🤣🤣🤣

just_looken6h ago

This is why you get the GOG version on gog you can select the version of the game to download.

On pc fallout 4 fallout new vegas and skyrim are all broken on steam because they all got the same "next gen" update.

Skyrim dec 2023
https://www.pcgamer.com/sky...

Can not find new vegas but anyone that modded it knows the script extender there was also broken

Valkyrye4h ago

Not accidental, they want modders to stop modding their older games to force them to mod Shitfield.

just_looken3h ago

There doing the same on starfield with a mods store and blocking mods

There goal is like blizzard and what they did with fallout 76 you make mods they can sell and you become a slave.

On skyrim they have "trusted" mod devs now basically a badge that lets your mod on the store you get a crumb of the sale when someone buys it.

Inverno1h ago

lol to the disagrees, the last Skyrim update broke mods too. They've been trying to kill mods to monetize them in creation club for years, it's not a stretch that they purposely put out patches just to break free mods.

porkChop12m ago

The disagrees are from people who have common sense. They aren't trying to kill mods. Most mods for any game will break with a new update because they rely on files/code that have been changed. This isn't new. Even with Bethesda this would happen way before the creation club. Mod support is literally one of the things that got Bethesda to where they are, and they're one of the only devs that releases comprehensive mod tools for each of their games.

Chocoburger1h ago

Over 14 GBs and doesn't change much at all? What? Taking up that much drive space for a pathetic 'remastering' is shameful.

Par for Bethesda.

Aussiesummer0m ago

It's not a remaster, it's a next gen update.
