Borderlands 2 Has Shipped Over 5 Million Units Worldwide

In a press release this morning Gearbox and 2K have announced that the highly popular Borderlands 2 has shipped more than 5 million units worldwide.

Well done Gearbox, and well deserved, Borderlands 2 was a cut above the original game in every way and should be held up as an example of what a sequel should be.

Congrats Gearbox, well deserved, I have been playing BL2 every day since day one, the only thing that will stop me playing it ( for a short time ) will be Halo 4 and then Call Of Duty.

That said, to be clear Shipped does not = SOLD.
I hate news stories, Devs, distributors and the like skewing the facts in their favor.

Actually, this close to release (still inside 2 months)...and this close to X-mas... shipped #s = sold #s. Keep in mind, there will be a ton of people who don't get games necessarily at release, but have to wait for X-mas, or even birthdays. A game with this strong of a start, isn't going to just stop selling cold, this close to the peak season. Retailers will continue to order the game...which means more games "shipped"...well into next quarter. Once it's shipped, it's "sold", to the retailer. Publishers don't offer games on consignment, lol.

Shipped = Shipped and Sold = Sold
There is no guarantee that all 5 million copies will be sold just because they are sitting on a shelf somewhere.

any company can ship 5 bazzilion of any product and only sell 1/10th of them.

My point is, if you are going to write a story about this topic then give me a true number of SOLD units, THAT is where the story is.

I hope folks aren't taking my comment as a negative towards Gearbox, as I said I'm enjoying the heck out of BL2 and I absolutely adore Borderlands.

I truly hope Gearbox sells double 5 million as for my own selfishness that would almost guarantee a part 3.

Excalibur, no offense, but it's obvious you don't understand how the retail system works...so you might want to just quit acting like you do. Publishers CANNOT just ship random #s of games to retailers. The retailers estimate what they believe will be sufficient for their first run...beyond any pre-orders... and then submit subsequent orders, depending on how well/fast that stock sold through. Beyond that, industry buzz, reviews, customer feedback, etc. play a part in ordering trends, but AT NO POINT can/will a publisher ship product that they aren't being compensated for. Therefor SHIPPED = SOLD.

Once again, I could care less how many copies of a game are sitting on the shelves at Gamestop, Best Buy, Walmart and so on.

THOSE GAMES ARE NOT SOLD TO THE PUBLIC. Period.

Retailers over order things all the time and in a lot of cases ship unsold product back to the original seller at a loss,re-stocking fee or throw it in a discount bin that eventually might be bought 6 months down the road for half (or more) of it's original price.

Telling me that 5 million units are shipped does not mean that there is 5 million people playing (whatever version ) of the game and therefore does not impress me.

I'm sorry that you can't understand that, again Shipped does not = SOLD.

Can you see how this article says Assassin's Creed 3 SELLS 3.5 million copies in it's first week as opposed to Gearbox SHIPS 5 million copies in a little less than 2 months?

Please tell me you can see how that is much more impressive.
