“It Was The Best Of Times…” Why This Is The Best Console Generation

Some say that this current generation of video game consoles is the best. Some say it’s the worst. BOTH viewpoints are correct.

This eighth generation of consoles has brought with it some incredible things that gamers could only have dreamed of before but it’s also brought out the worst in video game companies and gamers themselves.

This editorial will focus on what makes this generation the best.

Console generations 6&7 are the best.

darthv724255d ago

that is where it all really began. The rivalry between nintendo and sega with heavy hitting marketing like "genesis does what nintendon't" and "super nintendo is what genesisn't"

That was the time when real creative development meant finding ways around technical limitations. None of this overly used violence 3d this or that.

the days of the 2d side scrolling shooters (space shmups), sports, action, adventure, rpg....those were the days of glory.

Kalowest4255d ago

"Console generations 6&7 are the best."

I mean 5&6 are the best to me(Born in 91), I didn't get to play much of the 4th gen consoles(I just started buying older game systems)

nix4255d ago

it was one of the best but this gen instead of looking and talking about great games that came out... we were all too busy dissing each other. so much energy was spent just fighting.

in spite of some really great games we got, the publishers went lazy and started selling same games with minor changes again and again. the whole "release now, patch later" attitude is nothing but greed overtaking the passion. charging gamers for DLC that was already in the disk are some of the sad moments of this gen.

as for the media, fanboys running the gaming sites pretty much fueled the whole console war. so much hate has been spewed this gen that it's really embarassing. also the anti-sony campaign is a sad reminder of what this gen was all about.

thankfully as the time passed by i learnt to ignore most of the news and just stick to what seemed relevant. i also learnt to understand the review system better and not fall for the hype train. i hope others have learnt the same and won't fall for all that happened this gen.

overall, i'm content with this gen in spite of all the hatred. i'm proud to have played most of this gen's best games.

SilentNegotiator4254d ago

4th, 5th, and 6th. The tip of the videogame generation bell curve. I don't have much faith in the future; not with the way the biggest publishers are working (DRM, shooter-fication, etc).

antz11044254d ago

Say what you want. Most people, myself included, go back to play N64, SNES, or PS1 and enjoy it to some extent, but these days we expect more.

Of course todays gen is better.

Campy da Camper4255d ago

Agreed. Cameron Diaz's perky little Bcups are in my mind all the time. Damn, that woman is fine.

nveenio4255d ago

She looks better in this thumb than in most instances. And she's starting to show her age, too. When it comes to women showing their age, I'm a Kate Beckinsale kind of guy. (Could you tell?)

Marceles4255d ago

The worst thing I hate about this gen is the media coverage. In the Super Nintendo days I had GamePro and Electronic Gaming Monthly magazines to tell me everything new. Nowadays we have xboxsucksps3rules.blogspot.org or some crazy site reviewing games.

I'm not trying to sound old school, but media coverage this gen is in the crapper. Everything gets spoiled, everything is fanboy tainted, people that don't even play games are pursuading people on what's good and what isn't. When I see people giving opinions about that, it's like not watching a sports team until the playoffs and then bandwagoning on a favorite. So much misleading cluttered info.

ATi_Elite4254d ago

Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, Turbo GFX-16, Neo Geo is still the BEST era of console video gaming EVER!

None of that multiplat CRAP with only a handful of exclusives on each system like THIS Gen.

Each system back then had tons of Exclusives and even the few multiplats were totally different.

vortis4254d ago

THANK YOU.

This article is absolute media drivel fail.

I highly doubt it...

Developers lying to us
Developers giving loyal fans the middle finger
Developers becoming greedy
Developers becoming obessed with sales
Developers changing a beloved franchise for a bigger audience
Devlopers cutting content for DLC
High DLC prices
Multiplayer/Co-op being tacked onto nearly every game
Disc locked content
Casuals being too much of a focus
Casual focus ruining core games and developers
Gimmicks being thrown into games

I could go on

This gen has done some amazing things but you can't beat the previous gens.

Romudeth4255d ago

Come back tomorrow for the 2nd part of this editorial "Why this is the worst generation of consoles."

Smelly1sam4255d ago

Dude I 100% agree with you!

AWBrawler4255d ago

best gen ever was the old SEGA vs Nintendo days and maybe last gen. last gen with PS2 Xbox and Gamecube had so much creativity unlike this gen.

Kratoscar20084255d ago

I couldnt say it better, for me the best is the PS1 era and PS2 next, i would add:

Games coming with bugs as result of DLC and the lack of testing games just to save extra bucks.

Too much shooters, now thanks to them games like RE died entirely, wich gets my next point..

Death of the Survival horror genre.

SE and Capcom now are greedy and they have lots their reputation entirely.

This generation has really sucked, just graphics and no essence at all.

vortis4254d ago

Well said. Bubbles.

And I'd just like to tack on:

Bloated marketing campaigns
Overspending in production
Hollywood talent
Crooked media providing crooked bias (Jessica Chobot in ME3 + ME3 review scores + "OMG GOTY 5/5!!!" fanboyism)
Publishers tanking devs after milking fan favorite franchises

---

I'm gonna stop there 'cause I'm getting pissed thinking about all the crap going on in this gen.

this is by the far the worst despite some great games. I feel sorry for the people that are just starting this generation.

Ben_Grimm4255d ago

This gen was great! We got some awesome games and very new experiences this time around.

There were some bad times I admit, but I personally believe the good outweighed the bad.

I take that back! *RAAAAGE*!!!

It's not the fault of the gaming industry. Gamers were told what was happening, were warned about where this would lead, did nothing, and now are acting like it's the fault of publishers that they kept buying these games and investing in MTX. If only those gamers at that time felt as strongly about these things as they do Helldivers 2.

Hugodastrevas1d 18h ago

I don't think MTX target the common gamer but instead predate on the so called "whales". It's gambling pure and simple.

Christopher1d 16h ago

Oh, so it's okay to buy MTX-laden games as long as you don't spend money on MTX, which has led to even more MTX-laden games with even more predatory practices where content that used to be unlocked is now behind paywalls?

C'mon now people. You gave the corporations and inch, and they kept taking and taking. Community members told people that investing in these things alone would only lead to more and more MTX and putting more and more behind paywalls. But it's only the fault of the corporations, not the people who kept supporting it with purchases as more and more was taken away?

Hugodastrevas1d 16h ago

@Christopher that's a straw man, I didn't say any of that I just added context.

-Foxtrot1d 13h ago

Well exactly

People stand up for something which seems small to them and they get called whiners or negative. Then years later the shit hits the fan and they all go “why is this happening?” Like they are innocent.

The issue aswell is younger gamers who grew up with all this thinking it’s normal and we all just look like old farts yelling at clouds when we’re trying to help us all, even them.

Crows9019h ago

Who woulda thought that listening to your elders could be a good idea...too late now

Hofstaderman19h ago

It all started with that damn horse armour. Back then I thought nobody was stupid to buy into that crap. How wrong I was....

CrimsonWing6918h ago(Edited 18h ago)

I like how people move the goal-post. First it’s, f*ck any game with MTX’s, f*ck GaaS games, f*ck this game with “optional” MTX’s (Dragon’s Dogma 2), Helldivers 2 is ok because it’s fun and even though it has Battle Passes or Season Passes and MTX’s it’s ok because… you don’t need to buy them? 🤷‍♂️

HellDivers 2 is the best selling game this year. Just think about that, games like FF7 Rebirth sold poorly, but a continuous game that lives off recurring revenue sells extraordinarily well. Then we’ll hear everyone b*tch about a GaaS future.

I really wonder what this industry would’ve been like if we never gave into this crap, and yes I’m saying “WE” since I’m guilty of it, but man it’s literally no closing the door once it’s been opened.

This is what amazed me the most when playing hours upon hours of stellar Blade version 1.00.00 no bugs, no crashes, no sudden drops in frames, no screen tear, no falling from the world, just a complete package on a game under 50GB.
I think Korea will play a major role in gaming in the long run , because they're releasing banger after banger.

isarai1d 18h ago

Still pretty common to find if you stay away from the AAA publishers, in the last 10yrs ive probably only bought like 3 games combined from EA/ACTIVISION/UBISOFT. Even now i still buy games that work right out the box perfectly fine. Just recently got like 6hrs into Alone in the Dark, and not a single sign of any of that bs, really enjoying my time with it.

shinoff21831d 10h ago

There's such a misconception about every game needing a patch, this and that when in reality it's not even close. You nailed it isarai

Crows9019h ago

It's really only AAA devs and publishers that seem to have these constant problems

z2g21h ago(Edited 20h ago)

And we as gamers have to accept our role in that. Constantly never being satisfied. Constantly demanding more while paying less. Constantly demanding better frame rates, better graphics, more modes and faster faster faster…. Then review bombing the product when a demand isn’t met. Meanwhile those same demands are making games more difficult, complex and more expensive to create than ever before, on shrinking timelines that burn out employees and make their lives miserable.

You wanna know why so many games get delayed? Cuz the original release dates weren’t realistic to begin with, but you can’t tell a gamer their game is further away than they want to hear. Some dev or game designer will be threatened physically. That builds even more pressure and rushing. We are officially squeezing water out of rocks and still complaining about that how hard you have to squeeze the rock be just waiting for rain. Most of the time we take it out on the developing studio, when it’s the publisher making the calls.

All you need to do is read the comments on most websites and social media to see how toxic, entitled and petty the gaming community at large is, and realize how that transforms into impossible expectations on the parts of game makers.

Crows9019h ago

Nope. Some gamers are to blame. Never demanded anything you mentioned.

A fully finished and functioning product is a standard. It's not demanded. If someone sells you a tv that only works 60% of the time are you going to recommend it OR write a review calling out the obvious problem...it's not a demand...it's a standard.

A standard triple A publishers can't seem to hit consistently.

thorstein18h ago

You've never heard of planned obsolescence.

HankHill15h ago

I take it you like microtransactions? 🤣

Kinza5501221h ago(Edited 21h ago)

This is one battle that gamers have never won, hahaha. They were parading recently for their "win" against Sony. Where's the energy for this one, guys? LMAO!
