Microsoft’s E3 showcase to focus on services

Gematsu: "Microsoft will focus less on games and more on Xbox LIVE services at E3 next month, Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter was told during a visit to the company."

Snookies124373d ago

That's just what they DON'T need. They need some exclusives, seriously. They pay for "timed" exclusives all the time, which I don't understand when they could focus that money toward actual exclusive games. What's the point of an E3 press conference if you're focus isn't really on games?

Abash4373d ago

Glad there's still Sony's and Nintendo's conferences to look forward to at least

Snookies124373d ago

Yeah, Sony already said they'd have plenty of games to show off which leaves Nintendo... I'm hoping they do a great show and give me a good reason to pick up the Wii U at launch. I really want to get into it, it's just I haven't quite been convinced yet.

guitarded774372d ago (Edited 4372d ago )

"Said Michael Pachter"

This alone makes the entire article null and void of factual information.

On Actual Topic: I see a lot of people getting mad that MS is investing in interface, Kinect and arcade titles... they want more core titles which I can clearly understand, but their argument is "stop making apps/Kinect/arcade", which doesn't necessarily mean you're gonna get the core titles. I say continue making a strong grouping of apps/Kinect/arcade games, and bring the production of core titles up to the numbers of apps/Kinect/arcade titles. If MS quit the others and only made core titles, the brand would be weakened. I say keep doing what your doing, just make more core exclusives... Bring back games like Crimson Skies, put Rare to use and make a damned Killer Instinct (core gamers would love it), don't turn your core franchises into Kinect titles, keep them core and make new innovative titles for Kinect instead. At the end of the day, it's always best to game on all consoles, because then you're less concerned if one console isn't performing up to your standards.

BlindGuardian4372d ago

@guitarded77

Pachter is probably the worst moron on the inductry right now, and all his opinions are crap but at the same time he's very well informed and has access to a lot of confidential info

don't forget when he leaked the secretive Twistel Metal 2 years ago a week before E3

guitarded774372d ago

@BlindGuardian

Even a broken clock is right once a day.

darthv724372d ago

it pretty much makes sense. MS is obvioulsy wanting to promote the service now much more than the console itself. Yes they have the 360 and quite possibly the 720 around the corner but they are a software company at heart.

They want to promote the service as a whole and how it will be available to the microsoft platforms like phone/tablet, pc and console. If they were to build up the service to the point of it being more like windows in a way (where they license the use of it to ANY company that wants to use it) then they will gain more ground as a content delivery system than a game platform.

They are not just competing with the likes of nintendo and sony on games. They are competing with samsung and other companies that build these smart tv's with services in them. Perhaps ms is trying to be THE company to deliver those services to the tv makers instead of Samsung, vizio, etc doing it themselves.

Many people forget that MS tried their hand at webtv years ago and it failed to catch on then. Now is a different generation and ripe for the picking when it comes to content delivery anywhere anytime.

They're looking at the general consumer and casual gaming market. They get that they wont have to worry about gamers. More so when they only have to shove out a COD or Halo to placate them.

@Snookies12:
The quality and type of game Sony will show has me more worried than whatever quantity. Sure they can get out another GOW but we're still waiting on Last Guardian.

Uncharted2Vet4372d ago (Edited 4372d ago )

thats the whole point though they are not trying to be a gaming console they are trying to be an entertainment hub. microsoft always had that ideology in mind since the beginning, tbh they used the hobby of "gaming" as front to build their fanbase. i remember when i had an xbox most of my friends spent more time using their xbox for other purposes than gaming such as netflix streaming, playing music, using t.v apps, etc. why do you think the xbox platform gets little to no games every year? because microsoft has already accomplished what they set out to do. so expect hardcore exclusives to dwindle even more. just a sad fact

BattleTorn4372d ago (Edited 4372d ago )

I really am hoping your wrong.
I am one of those consumers that was captured, or should I say captivated, by Microsofts' entrance into the gaming industry. (lets face it the original Xbox was pretty beast)

Since then I have stayed loyal due to the amounts of money they seem to be willing to pour over things like 'timed exclusives.' (which I've always thought made up for the yearly service fee)

Microsoft is a blood-thirsty "business" and I've actually always admired that part of them.

But it seems MS has picked up on what Nintendo has done, and is realizing that 'gaming' doesn't necessary have to be part of the "master-plan." (if ya know what I mean)

That is why I've always tried to buy as much as their exclusives as possible, cause hopefully they'll realize that gaming is THE compenent that is what keeping this seemingly invinsible industry going, and not the "entertainment" side.

one can hope, right?

CommonSense4372d ago (Edited 4372d ago )

unfortunately, snookies, you're wrong.

the core gamers want exclusives, but MS does not NEED exclusives. MS is perfectly happy offering a 200 dollar entertainment hub. They crush holiday sales and do better every year. Not to mention that they've done a good job of grabbing the majority of 3rd party sales by offering early DLC and a really strong online community.

and lets face it, Halo, alone, will sell as much as any 3 ps3 exclusives combined this year...if not more.

what your comment should be is that 360 owners WANT exclusives...but MS is proving that they clearly don't NEED them.

Patriots_Pride4372d ago (Edited 4372d ago )

So why dont the core gamers buy a PS3 instead of holding on to jope the MS would release excksuives??? Thats right becuase core gamers are happy playing Skyrim, Batman 2, COD, Battlefield, Fall Out Vegas....

Why do people always use that same rant - 360 hardcore want mroe exlcusives but yet they still own a 360 and pay $60 a year to play online when the PS3 has 100's off exclusives, free online and Blurey. Dont give that crap about Americans being sheeps - that just an excuse that people use to make them selfes feel better about how this gen has turned out.

BrutallyBlunt4372d ago

We need to get one major thing out of the way upfront, people who comment on forums are the minority not the majority. So when you hear cries about the lack of exclusives this isn't really the case. Look at all the comments about Call of Duty games yet it continues to be the top seller.

I understand the need to invest in new IP's and I as a gamer hope they would. However I also see the risk of doing that and a company like Microsoft who lost its ass last generation on the original XBOX isn't about to make the same mistake twice. They will focus on what works and so far it seems their direction is working for them much better.

The XBOX 360 continues to sell rather well for Microsoft. It's going on 7 years old now and the price drop to what it was when it was released back in 2005 is a far cry to how much more aggressive Sony has had to be. Sony also has more overhead costs by having more studios to support. Great as a gamer but not so great for share-holdders who are looking for returns.

Personally I think Microsoft's E3 showing will again be rubbish. It's not aimed at me, it's aimed at shareholders. Microsoft doesn't know how to have a compelling showing at E3. Instead they come across as being awkward because you have people who sit in the office all day trying to connect (or is it Kinect?) with it's fanbase. That's hard to do when you're not listening to them all year.

Nintendo really is the only one of the big 3 who's main interest is still gaming. Both Sony and Microsoft see the console as a placeholder now for other services. Sony gambled on bluray at the expense of existing customers. That cost them a major portion of their previous installment. Microsoft went from selling Live subscriptions to now wanting to amalgamate it with Windows Metro and using Kinect as a device to control its operating system and media services, not games.

Nintendo is my main interest now at E3, the other two will be as predictable as usual.

KwietStorm_BLM4372d ago

A logical standpoint from a gamer, but with the sales Microsoft is getting, I doubt it matters to them. Microsoft has a history of doing whatever it takes to penetrate the market, so I don't see them changing up their Xbox strategy at the moment.

Though one thing is clear. PS3 and Xbox have been moving in opposite directions since the generation began, and with all the people in the industry talking up the endangered species of the 3rd party exclusive, I really wonder what Microsoft is going to do with their next system, because Sony clearly has more ammo in the cache, and they wouldn't be where they are right now if they didn't start out with a 'handicap,'

CommonSense4371d ago (Edited 4371d ago )

sony WOULD have more "ammo in the cache" if they weren't a once powerful company that is now trending way down in market value.

MS is worth 13 times as much as sony is, if they really wanted to, they could buy up dozens of third parties...which is what i see them doing in the next gen since they've shown that xbox is a very profitable brand.

sony, on the other hand, is worth 1/5th of what it once was. and with japan facing a potential, but very real, economic catastrophe, AND with vita not doing well, sony could be in a lotta trouble. i can see them closing the doors on a at least a few of their first party devs.

i'm sure a lot of people will disagree with this, but that's because they don't understand the world market.

SockeyBoy4372d ago (Edited 4372d ago )

I smell BS. What a great article to getting everyone heated up before E3.

Nope it's all straight front he horse's mouth.

http://n4g.com/news/993041/...

Disccordia4372d ago

Honesty this wouldn't surprise me. MS have opened a lot of studios recently and it seems like any exclusives they may have might be for their next console.

Tbh though everything coming from MS seems to ve very low key. its strange they are normally chest pounding and generally being very annoying around this time of year.

hardly anyone is talking about new hardware from MS (or Sony). anymore when six mo the ago we were all expecting it. I do wonder if both companies are downplaying (outright saying no new console at e3 in the case of ms) to throw people off the scent.

GezForce4372d ago

Agreed. The only xboxlive service that i want is MP for silver subscribers. its long overdue ya greedy cunts.

SilentNegotiator4372d ago (Edited 4372d ago )

More non-gaming features for my console that I never asked for! Yipee!! Now charging me for online play is even MORE justified!

/s

Such a shame. I was hoping they would have gotten through all of that crap last year, but apparently they're going to go on about it working as a cable box and crap.

I'm glad I got into PC gaming. Most of the exclusives series that I liked have gone sour on the 360 (COD-inspired Halo, Recycled Crackdown 2, etc) or multiplat (Dead Rising, Saints Row, etc) and I can play all of the multiplats on PC.

The 360 was pretty awesome its first 2-3 years as far as exclusives go, but now the focus is Kinect and "services". It really is a shame. I miss the old ways of the 360.

Interloper4373d ago

.... More and more, I'm wanting a Wii U and just going to sell my Xbox... only my friends on there keep me from doing so.

versusALL4373d ago

What they need is some more first party games. I like playing Halo, Gears, and DOA as much as the next guy but a little variety would be nice.

xPhearR3dx4372d ago

You mean like the hundreds of multiplatform titles? People act like they only use their PS3/360 for exclusive games. I don't care if I can't play certain titles others can, and if I do, I'll buy that platform. When I owned a PS3 and 360, 90% of my gaming time was spent with multiplatforms anyway.

John Kratos4372d ago

So you still spent 90% of your time playing multiplats on PS3?

xPhearR3dx4372d ago (Edited 4372d ago )

@John Kratos

Nope. I only used my PS3 for exclusives. I played the shit out of Heavy Rain, LBP, Modnation Racers, etc but even then, most of my time gaming was spent on my 360 with multiplatforms.

There's so many multiplatform titles that I still have many games I haven't even touched. Lately I've been playing The Witcher 2 and Trials Evo. Got Minecraft this week, Max Payne 3 next week, then Ghost Recon the week after. Then we have Skyrim DLC at E3, so by the time I finish all those games plus my backlog, I'll be back on Skyrim. Month or so later and it's Borderlands 2, Assassins Creed 3, then on to holiday titles. No matter if you choose to play 360 or PS3, you'll have plenty of games to play for the rest of the year.

@Nitrowolf2

What's the point? Personal preference. PC has so many exclusive I'd LOVE to play, but you'll never convince me to play on PC because I can't stand PC gaming. Certain people can't stand the PS3/360 controller. It's not just the games that decide if a person purchases a certain platform. It's everything; controller, interface, features, games, etc.

Nitrowolf24372d ago (Edited 4372d ago )

I hate the multiplat excuse. Sure of course you can play that game on every console, but what's the point of owning that console when the other one has more to offer when it comes to games then?
literally it's 50/50 for me on playstation 3 when it comes to playing exclusive/multi.

Not coming in here to troll or anything, but I seriously think MS needs to invest in first party IP rather then times exclusives DLC and such.

As a PS3 owner it makes me feel good knowing that Sony is supplying content that can't be found anywhere else, meaning that I made the right choice with buying a Playstation 3. I just don't see he point in owning a 360 at this point when they really don't have much first party IP that are hugely recognizable. Halo, gears, and Forza come to mind only, but that's cause they keep pumping those same titles. Wouldlove to see Alan Wake 2 from them, hell even Too Human 2 I wouldn't mind (as long as they fix what they did wrong)

Hearing news like this though should be disappointing to any gamer. Simple fact, nearly all console/handheld owners out their bought the system for games, not for social networking, apps, or services.

Though if you own both consoles though, it's a win/win no matter what.

If it came simply down to games only and one console only had Multiplat while the other had them Plus exclusive. Only one of those system sounds more attractive then the other. I know the 360 has it's shares of exclusive, but for the most part that's how I feel about the console.

I want to buy a 360, but I want MS to push for more first party titles.

Disccordia4372d ago

People round here act like the ps3 has so many exclusive games when it just doesn't. Of course the 360 hardly has any can't deny that but in comparison to last gen.. when the Xbox had as many as the ps3 has now and the ps2 literally had one every week.. what a golden age that was!

(of course a lot of that support was third party)

I feel that the mass market sees that a lot of ps3 exclusives 'appear' to be quite niche and despite most being excellent its easy to see way so many fall for the big advertising behind gears/halo mixed with the fact Xbox runs 90% of all games released.

Arnon4372d ago

Yeah, I'm sorry, but the PS3 crowd really over hypes the list of exclusives and how amazing they are. To be honest, 80% of them, just like on the other two consoles, aren't really that great. I've owned plenty of them, but I wouldn't say they're better than many multiplatform games just because they're made by Sony.

The majority of my gaming will be spent with multiplatform titles this year.

Patriots_Pride4372d ago

Have to agree with disc and arnon.

Some of Sony's exclusives are great but compared to most multiplats games they are almost on par or not as great.

Game like Skyrim, Dead Space, Bioshock, Fall Out, Battlefield, Batman, Saint Row, Boaderlands, AC, Red Dead Redemption, Dark Souls, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Metro.... show that one can live just fine with multi-plats.

blue7_74373d ago

I'm guessing they have all their other first party studios working on next gen games which is the only explanation they wouldn't have many exclusives to show. I'm sure they will have at least one or two new exclusives to show.

Afterlife4372d ago

I doubt it. I think they are too busy pumping out Kinect games. I expect a few at E3.

Microsoft’s Surface and Xbox hardware revenues take a big hit in Q3

Microsoft just posted the third quarter of its 2024 fiscal financial results. The software maker made $61.9 billion in revenue and a net income of $21.9 billion during Q3. Revenue is up 17 percent, and net income has increased by 20 percent.

Xbox content + services up 62% while hardware down 31%... seems about right with the way they tout you don't need the hardware to play. People can play on their phones or smart tv or other means. I don't hardly play on my consoles directly since getting devices like the logitech g-cloud and ps portal. Which is to also say I have been playing more digital than physical because of these devices.

Cacabunga11h ago

I can tell people like you are an absolute minority..

If service is up means their fans and fanboys accepted this model and subscribed to it. The near future you will see a big decline because the service is saturated.

shinoff218310h ago

But that's been ms for years. When things aren't going their way they try to change the way things are said. For instance console sales are down, they stop telling how many sold instead telling us how many hours spent in halo or headshots. So it makes sense console sales down just say people are playing on more devices then previous. What they won't say is how many xbox players jumped ship to ps5.

Cacabunga9h ago

Hardware sales are so bad that Sony and Nintendo are blowing the sales off the water with their hardware.

If Xbox are losers, others aren’t..
Xbox already tried everything with Xbox live then subscriptions went down so much that they had to find something else. Their fans subscribed then reached saturation rather quickly.

Hardware and exclusive games is where it’s at! Keep gamers excited, announce decent software and people will support you

itsmebryan5h ago

@shin
Well keep it simple Sony 's operating income is down 26% and Microsoft's is up 32%. No MS spin there, just facts. 😉

romulus234h ago

Odd that a company that touts you dont need the hardware to play is already touting another console in the works.

darthv723h ago

They are not reliant on the HW but still want to maintain a presence (no matter how small) is a good thing. It shows commitment to the craft. It reminds me of SNK and how they made games for their own hardware (Neo Geo) while also making them for others because they knew there was a market to do so. They knew they would sell more to others but also sell to their own niche fan base.

"Without Activision Blizzard, Microsoft’s overall gaming revenue would have actually declined this quarter."
"Xbox content and services would have only been up a single percent without Activision Blizzard..."
"It looks like next quarter is going to be a similar story for gaming at Microsoft, too."

That is crazy... so A/B/K is carrying the whole Xbox gaming.
Oh and Microsoft will be fine. Windows, Office and Cloud are growing with each pc purchase.

Bethesda France focused on publishing and marketing in the region. And 15 people lost their jobs as part of the closure.

I wonder if this is part of Microsoft's strategy to abandoned physical media or possibly gamepass advertising makes their roles redundant you don't need to market a game as hard when the majority of players get the game as part of a sub which already promoted upcoming games

Tacoboto1d 20h ago

It's France too, there's a high likelihood only 1-2 people on the team even had an Xbox.

Xbox's Preservation Step Sets A Much-Needed Example, Especially For Nintendo

Hanzla from eXputer inquires: "If Xbox can care about preserving its games and legacy, what exactly is wrong with Nintendo, trying to kill game preservation single-handedly?"

purple10113d ago

Ahh yes the good old game preservation of saving all your games to a removable hhd on the Xbox 360, taking it round your mates house, setting up multiple tvs to
Be met with “save data corrupted, please re download”

Or how about removing 360 games
From the store
, download them now or else, and, better hope to god that save data doesn’t corrupt, or it’s lost for ever

Nice one ☝️

Zeref12d ago

It's better than what Nintendo and Playstation is doing. It might not be perfect but at least they are TRYING. Unlike the others.

DarXyde12d ago

Trying? Take off the blinders for a moment, mate.

1. A failure to preserve games is just that: a failure to preserve games. Don't try to sugarcoat it: NO ONE is doing it properly. Better than awful is nothing to write home about.

2. At the time of this comment, isn't it the case that you need an internet connection to play Xbox games even if you buy physical discs that are hardly in circulation anymore? I don't have a Series X and I can't verify, but I think that is correct. I'm fairly certain you can at least play PS5 games at version 1.0 (not much of a win really when many games require day one patches). I think Microsoft's all digital, licensing approach is by far more aggressive than anyone else's. They really try to push you to game pass where you lose your entire library by umm.... Skipping a month of payments.

I don't think anyone is doing it right whatsoever. Don't get me started on Nintendo, who goes after anyone looking to preserve their games better than they ever would with extreme litigation.

Don't be a simp for any of these companies. Get it together.

PhillyDonJawn12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

@DarX never speak on Xbox again. You lost all credibility with your internet connection comment. Smh you have 0 clue and misinformed yet speaking on something you don't no squat about.

Einhander197212d ago

What has Sony done exactly? You guys keep deflecting to Sony but I am not actually seeing any results, and ai am certain nothing that you can come up with even comes close to what Microsoft has done and what they have tried and failed to do, like tie all your disks to your account on xbone.

Microsoft removed their whole indie section when they moved to the xbone because they were going to only allow games on the service that came from a publisher, id@xbox started after xbone launched and it only exists because Sony embraced indie and Microsoft was forced to cancel their plans and reverse course.

And every single game that was part of games for windows live including disk games (I have gta 4 on disk that won't work) so hundreds of games that use that DRM no longer work unless the company themselves patched it out which of course very few did.

MrBaskerville12d ago

Not trying. Tried. they killed of the backcomp program years ago. They set something up again, but sounds like it's more of an attempt to save the current library on whatever they are planning next. With luck they save everything and more, but let's see. I could see them killing off parts of the OG xbox and 360 libraries. Can't imagine that they would allow us to play Forza 5-7 in the future.

With that said, I do like what they've done and really wish they could have done more.

shinoff218311d ago

So killing off physical media is trying what exactly. Ms don't really give a fk if you think they do your kidding yourself.

Zeref12d ago

Just because it's digital only doesn't mean you can't preserve it. Just put it on an external and you have the exact same functionality of what a disc does.

MrNinosan12d ago

Guess you're trolling, but if you actually think that's how it works, I'd recommend buying some braincells.

mkis00711d ago (Edited 11d ago )

Volitile vs nonvolitile data. A disc will not corrupt either. A drive can be corrupted.

Einhander197212d ago

This is just a scammy PR move to distract from the fact they are going digital only and trying to push streaming and subscriptions only.

No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft.

Without discs there is no preservation, preservation can't be done by the rights holders it can only be done by the consumers, anything else is a lie.

DarXyde12d ago

Because games like Persona 5 exist. It's STILL V1.00. On Playstation, that's a win because 1.00 is installed on the disc—no need to download anything.

If a game does not require any updates, it's all on the disc.

Extremely low bar in the modern era, of course. It's not much of a win by any stretch.

But for now, physical media does have a purpose, at least on Playstation.

That is factually not how game licensing works, try plugging your hard drive into someone else xbox, It's not going to work, and it won't work if the licensing servers ever go down.

Einhander197212d ago

Anyone remember games for windows live.

I have around a dozen games, some on Steam itself that will not work because Microsoft shut off the licensing servers.

BehindTheRows12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

I do. I STILL have games (Gears of War being the big one) I cannot access because Games for Windows LIVE is total garbage and no one has held Microsoft accountable.

You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership.

Damn how many times do people got to explain your idiocy to you? You can take a copy of Persona 5 like someone used as an example and play that game on ANY console WITHOUT logging in which means I can lend the game to a friend without internet and they can play my game. Can you lend your hard drive to anyone without logging in for them to play? NOPE. That is a huge difference and if you think otherwise then sorry you're an idiot.

"No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft."

Ubisoft is literally erasing games people bought from their libraries... My PS1-3 discs are useless on modern hardware. Nintendo's re-published and resold almost their entire Wii U library, and the eShop is completely dead with no BC mechanism in the Switch software. Microsoft publishes everything they make today day one on Steam and Xbox/Windows. Sony only brings to PC the titles they think you might want some years later and Nintendo won't even design a functional long-lasting joystick.

You're absolutely trolling and not serious if you think Microsoft today is the worst offender.

shinoff218311d ago

Yay steam

Not everyone fks with computers though. The disc is still the best way as a console player. Period.

Tacoboto11d ago

How do Sony and Nintendo feel about these discs from 2001-2013?

Don't be stupid, you know Xbox is the best at this today.

Nobody wants this. Sales or the lack of it in the case of XBOX is very telling. I wonder how the adorably all digital series X will fare. Adorably dismal perhaps?

crazyCoconuts12d ago

Only time will tell, but for from someone like me suspecting that Xbox is trying to gracefully exit the console market, that "forward compatibility" team is trying to get Xbox games playing on Windows PCs. I mean, it's nice that they're not planning on exiting with a "enjoy your games while the hardware still works" message, so that's nice. They still have a brand to protect via Microsoft so probably feel obligated to have a better exit strategy.

That is not their plan, their plan is to transfer users accounts to the cloud.

Phil Spencer himself said as much a few months back, plans could have changed but I think people are reading way too much into one statement where Phil said he would allow Epic on xbox because he wants to be able to sell xbox games directly on other platforms. Aka, instead of selling Sea of Thives through PSN he wants to have an xbox store to sell his games on PlayStation without giving PlayStation any money.

Again, it's extremely unlikely that Phil plans to put PC on xbox and licensing would prevent them from just giving out other publishers games purchased on xbox copies of thier games on PC, Microsoft does not own their games.

crazyCoconuts11d ago

The thing that doesn't align with the cloud strategy is the giving up on exclusives. You'd still need strong exclusives for cloud streaming - it's still a "platform" , just with a lower upfront hardware investment. I feel like they've learned what PS learned with PSNow long ago. We're not ready to stream games and it's only gonna lose them money to try at this point

I would love that, I'd buy up some of the Xbox games if they could run on PC, like the Rare Replay, Lost Odyssey and Dead or Alive Ultimate, probably a pipe dream though.
