OXM: Great Games We'll Never Finish

OXM writes: "Everybody owns at least one world-class game they'll prattle about till the cows come home but have yet to actually finish. As a rule, we'd rather die (or more likely, stall frantically while Googling wikis under cover of the table) than admit to such oversights, but guilt has a way of wearing a man down. Join Matt, Log and Ed as they get a few things off their chests."

ThePsychoGamer4716d ago

I doub't I'll ever 100% a Yakuza game, but still every thing about the series... except golf.

HolyOrangeCows4715d ago

If I ever beat Demon's Souls, I'll EAT a copy of Yakuza.

Raven_Nomad4716d ago (Edited 4716d ago )

I have yet to finish Metal Gear Solid 4. I bought the MGS4 bundle back in the day with the Backwards compatible PS3 and I was so amped to finish the franchise off on a high note, but the game just didn't deliver like the previous titles and I felt it was more of a movie then a game.

Also they took out most of the actual stealth elements and the install times for each section got to be too numerous and tedious. I kind of felt like going back to finish it, but the lack of trophies put that on the back burner.

SuperLupe4716d ago (Edited 4716d ago )

MGS4 was cool, I finished and but you're right, this time Hideo went too far with the cutscenes. But its only near the end of the game that I started having the feeling that I had watched more than I had played.

NYC_Gamer4716d ago

MGS 1&3 were the best in my opinion

RankFTW4716d ago

MGS 3 is a masterpiece that will never be surpassed.

BattleAxe4716d ago (Edited 4716d ago )

@ Raven

Well if you don't like the story or the plot enough to watch the cutscenes, then why would you buy MGS4 in the first place? Since MGS2, cutscenes are a given, but the other thing is you can skip them if you want to, so why complain about it?

saladthieves4716d ago

Final Fantasy XIII for me. I started playing the game, and about 9 hours into it, I just couldn't take it anymore...this was not the final fantasy game I used to remember.

SuperLupe4716d ago

Same here, FF fan but only got 14 hours in and gave up, nothing was pushing to go further.

rabidpancakeburglar4716d ago

I completed it twice and spent about 110 hours on it, despite most peoples opinion it is actually a good game.

JVC064716d ago

I bought this game on release, and was really looking forward to it. Very soon into the game I realised the linear approach and confusing story was really putting me off.
I left it for a year and just recently got back into it and ended up spending 120 hours acquiring all the upgrades and achievements.
In summary the game as a story let me down compared to some of the older ones which were brilliant, but I did enjoy the levelling up and Cieth stone missions, Square have definitely not been on their game since FF10 in my opinion.

mr.selfdestruct4716d ago (Edited 4716d ago )

FFXIII, same game for me i was days into the game when my harddrive crashed and i lost all my data still haven't goten the nerve to start all over again. :(

My favourite is MGS 1 too. Sometimes I feel it doesnt get the credit it desrves compared to MGS3 which is the 2nd best imo.

Kee4716d ago (Edited 4716d ago )

Umm.. I vowed to platinum demon's souls but after beating it about 5 times I still have a few trophies to get. Stopped trying about a year ago. (Nah, less than that, more like 7 months ago)

saladthieves4716d ago

Then there are those games that you want to platinum, but it just seems impossible to do it. One of these, currently on top of my list is Wipeout HD.

ainsz4716d ago

You are so right about that. When I beat Zico, I almost cummed in my pants! Still no where near platinuming it though...

RankFTW4716d ago

I got platinum on my US copy of DS but only got about 50% in my EU version.

jerethdagryphon4716d ago

demons souls disapointed me i expected it to be harder beat with plat in 3 and a bit playthroughs easy game :(

unfinished anythign with retarded amounts of online trophys, and currently gt5 stupid special events :(

helghast1024716d ago (Edited 4716d ago )

For some reason Mass Effect for me the franchise not just 1 or 2 but both combined.

Have 100hrs in ME1 but still havent made a class to get the last 3-4 achievments of using biotics.

Same goes for ME2.

RankFTW4716d ago

I got prety bored at the end of ME1 and never finished it but completed ME2 twice, it's a much better game.

aznrunner18814716d ago

I think ME2 is more shooter, whereas ME1 was more RPG. However, the shooter side of ME2 coupled with the RPG elements makes for a masterful game IMO.

grifter0244716d ago

Rank-- To each his own...I loved Mass 1 more than I did Mass2 and right now only have 1 save in Me2 at the level cap of 30 with 1 playthrough on insanity halfway through that I havent played since March.

Azn- Agree although Bio needs to throw in more RPG elements than what they took out of in ME2. I dont know why they took out changing armor at least leave that in there jeez.

This could be fun as they make great tables. Go big or go extinct. Prime your senses for a neural handshake and step into the cockpit of a Jaeger. It is on you to cancel the apocalypse when Pacific Rim Pinball comes to Pinball FX on May 16.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies1d ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken20h ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing691d 11h ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker1d 11h ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo1d 11h ago (Edited 1d 11h ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing691d 11h ago (Edited 1d 11h ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos1d 8h ago (Edited 1d 8h ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt23h ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken20h ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.
