Square Enix surprised everyone by announcing that Dragon Quest IX would be coming to the Nintendo DS, let alone in 2007, but the company has high hopes for the game. Revealed today was how Square Enix could well sell five million copies of Dragon Quest IX, already the most anticipated game of the year, which would make it the biggest ever in the series, following the PSone's Dragon Quest VII and Dragon Quest VIII on the PS2. However, if remakes and re-releases are included, Square Enix states that the actual best seller is Dragon Quest III from the NES, with six million units sold so far since its original release in 1988. The series as a whole has now surpassed 41 million units as of 31st December, 2006.
In related news, CEO Yoichi Wada spoke in Japan lately and stated:
"This summer, we'll release Battle Road in arcades and Swords for the Wii. Following that, we're thinking of a release 9 once we've released remake versions and so forth."
Despite having some of the best storylines and customization options in the series, Dragon Quest IX is the only installment to never receive a port.
I wo set why this port never happened. Now with a larger and more interested fanbase, may e they will?!
I wish the majority of the previous mainline Dragon Quest games were readily available on modern platforms. 3DS is the only system that fits that criteria but this should be expanded upon
To this day, Dragon Quest IX remains a Nintendo DS exclusive title. However, the team behind the game has made comments suggesting that a Dragon Quest IX remake is possible.
I'd be game for that. It was fun having a team of DBZ characters running around. Lol
There is a long tradition of Square Enix Remakes dating back through PlayStation history. That tradition continues with Final Fantasy VII, and will probably keep going after that. Here are some titles gamers would love to see again.
Why do lists like this never ask for the Eidos side of Square Enix? There’s plenty of remakes id like to seem from Eidos’ stories history
Personally I’d just want Square Enix to release FFVIIR period before thinking of whatever remake they could work on after it.
Plus it’s not like we even have to wait for that to release for another remake to be made. Their last one was Secret of Mana last year. They can still release smaller scale remakes in the meantime
I would love for Square to take Chrono Trigger as is, repolish it with an overlay of lighting effects and actually get an orchestra to do the soundtrack. (I wish CT had a live cover too).
Also would love to see Enix's E.V.O Search for Eden remade in something that resembles the Ubisoft Framework Engine. This game is incredible yet almost completely forgotten.
Final Fantasy VIII
They already skipped VIII out with a port and trophy support so they better not skip it for the next remake
The garden battle in HD would be glorious
Isn't 5 million a little low considering there are 10 million+ DS owners in Japan? 40 million worldwide...
Well judging by their past endevures for the DS games maybe they finally learned that they need to make a lot of the carts when releasing.
To be honest, I don't really play my DS that much. Its a cool little system but I don't honestly understand how 43 million of them are sold. I used to love Nintendo big time, but ever since I got a PS3 or Xbox360, I feel like I outgrew Nintendo. Good for them though, but the bright cartoony graphics are starting to die off the attractivness in me..
They can sell 5million copies without anyone yet seeing the game?
That sounds almost like how Sony can sell 5million consoles without anyone seeing any actual games there either!
