Profits soar for GameStop

GameStop has recorded profits of USD 24.7 million (EUR 18.3m), a rise of 111 per cent, and sales of USD 1.28 billion (EUR 949m), up 23 per cent, for the first quarter of 2007 reports GamesInustry.biz.

Although the Wii and DS have been key drivers, strong performances of all next-gen systems has boosted hardware sales by 75.1 per cent.

"Our first quarter results were driven by the strong growth of next-generation hardware despite both Nintendo products, the Wii and DS Lite, being in short supply throughout the quarter," commented CEO R. Richard Fontaine.

"Our business is benefiting from unmatched platform expansion. For much of the quarter, seven different platforms were represented among our top 25 best sellers.

Your days are counted.

Sincerely,

A content on-demand consumer.

Funny. And true. Although their numbered days may be a bit more than many think. Retail is still going to be a big part of sales for 5-10 years. Many people still like to have the pyhsical object they are purchasing. many women call it "Retail Therapy" and there is just something about picking up a shiny new box at the store. And until a higher speed data network is more widespread and functional in todays neighborhoods, you would actually save time by running to the store to pick up a game rather than wait for the 5,10,15GB download to complete.
And let's not forget, there will always be hardware (consoles + peripherals)

I would certainly hope they are seeing record sales. There are 3 new consoles on the market, the DS is blowing up all over the world, and we just came out of a winter packed full of games. Of course they are going to see crazy sales. Let's see how things look for them in the middle of august eh? Gaming drought anyone?

Why Monopolies In Gaming Must Not Be Allowed

As of right now, there are no monopolies in the games industry, and for the sake of the medium as a whole, they never should either.

thorstein6h ago

Shouldn't be allowed in any field.

And yet the biggest tech companies in America are essentially that. They buy up all the small comps only to kill them off and steal what they have, and if they can't buy em they bleed them to death.

jwillj2k41h ago

Eventually they’ll realize the value is with the employee not the company. Buying an IP means nothing if the people who contributed are let go. They’ll get it one day.

MrCrimson1h ago

tech is different because they buy threats and then kill them. Twitter bought Vine and did nothing with it. Despite people seemingly liking it. Could've had tiktok a decade before bytedance. go figure.

Zenzuu2h ago

Monopolies shouldn't be allowed regardless. Not just for gaming.

MrCrimson1h ago

They buy IPs not talent. That's why these buyouts never work and the IPs die. Right now it's too expensive to develop games - but I expect that to shift maybe as AI tools can make it easier. The best games have been indie games for awhile as big developers fuck their ips to death with "games as a service" -
