The PlayStation Enso - a designer's view of what the PS5 might look like in 2018!...

If, like us, you have ever found yourself idly wondering what your PlayStation console might look like in the year 2018, then this latest concept art from designer Harold Smook is sure to tickle your gaming fancy.

Yanko published the pics you can see right here of Smook's Playstation Enso 2018, announcing that, "design-wise the console takes inspiration from the Japanese and Buddhist Zen elements, with the premise being based on the symbol called Enso (meaning the glow of enlightenment).

that ball is the WHOLE system.. it's all virtual reality (according to that commercial) i would be amazed if sony can do that with the PS9 if they're still around at that time.. tho i'd probs not be very amazed then depending on how the tech changes

By that time console makers might be all portable!

Just think if we had a console with all the power of a PS3 that was portable with it's own touch screen. The drive device that holds the cheap media wirelessly connects to all your games over the internet or through the new bluetooth spec.

It's already started to head this direction with mobile phones, PSP etc. The big bulky consoles devices might soon disappear or become simple docking stations for high end portable consoles.

Look at it this way.

The hand held doesn't need 1080p if it's on a tiny screen. The only time high end graphics are needed is when the screen is used with an HDTV. The full power to create those graphics aren't needed until the scale is raised. In any case this a tiny hand held could run something like drakes fortune graphically and only need the extra graphics power if used in conjunction with a TV.

In this situation one game could be designed for portability yet run high quality when displayed on devices that require extra resolution.

Another thing to note: With the HDTV's today we don't even need cable connections to transmit digital signals to our TV's. Anyway, the future is anyones guess as these are just a few thoughts I had. This is why I don't think we should be thinking this far into the future.
