This is what a Portal 2 anime could look like; fan-made Portal 2 animation film looks gorgeous

DSOGaming writes: "Now this is what we're talking about. YouTube's member 'enquaynay' has created a short animation film that is based on Valve's puzzle game, Portal 2. Of course, there are some changes to Portal's universe (as GLaDos is now a sexy dead cyborg woman). Who cares though as this is a brilliant animation short film, with well drawn characters, cute voice acting and great design. Enjoy!"

Animation, not anime. Learn the difference.

And yeah, that is the kind of thing you hit the donate button to see the full version of. Hope that Valve knows about it and they throw their full support behind it.

Xof4252d ago

Maybe you need to learn the difference?

Anime is Japanese for animation. It's the same thing.

Studio-YaMi4252d ago (Edited 4252d ago )

No,actually he's on the right side of the plate here,we all know that Anime is short for animation, but in Japan, the right term to speak of Japanese cartoons is "Anime",and this Portal animation is absolutely NOT an Anime.

Edit :
I find this Animation pretty good actually,I really like how fluid it is,almost like a Disney/Pixar animation :D ! Good job

Anime = Animation. literally. It's not a translation or an abbreviation.

It's the katakana characters "a," "ni" and "me." Or, rather, it's the Japanese-spelling for animation. Fun fact: what we think of as "anime" now was originally known as manga (named after the style of comic that was animated).

The English term 'animation' was adopted and converted to 'anime' in the 1970s.

And then there was the anime/manga boom of the 1990s, and Japanese pop-culture spread around the world. When anime was first introduced to the West, it was new and exotic--and different (unique art style, fluid animation, serious writing and characterization, serial formatting, etc.)

So, yeah, there was about a 30 year stretch of time during which "anime" was simply and only the term for Japanese animation.

But it's not the 1990s any more. What's happened since?

Well, the animation industries in China and (South) Korea (and other southeast Asian nations) took off, gained a modicum of international exposure... and, due to the fact that they were heavily influenced by Japanese anime, almost indistinguishable.

And what happened in the west? Well, all of those things that made anime so unique slowly became staples in Western animation in a rather overt attempt to capitalize on the then-overwhelming popularity of the medium.

No, the term "anime" is slowly becoming more and more synonymous with "cartoon" in English.

Is it odd that we have an up-and-coming English word that was adapted froma Japanese word that was adapted from a Japanese word? Yes. It's very odd! But that's etymology! Etymology is very odd!

tl;dr version -- It's the same thing. Language is fluid, stop trying to impose rigid rules on what is and isn't. It's like trying to alter the flow of a river by dumping bails of sand into the current.

Godmars2904252d ago (Edited 4252d ago )

I'm not fond of the differential myself, animation is and should be animation no matter where its from, but still if its going to be used it should be used properly.

Like using street slang with no understanding of it: Just makes the user look inept and out of touch about the subject.

@Canary:
Sorry, but wall of text fails. I've only ever heard Western studios use the term "anime inspired." No US, Spanish or even French studio called their work anime even when working directly with Japanese studios.

Likewise when doing original stuff, comix certainly, Korean works are not known as "anime" or "manga."

Chinese stuff is directly "inspired" from what ever is popular so who knows what its called.

The point is with my own mini wall of text, it all feeds upon itself. Most anime was directly inspired - actually inspired, not ripped off - from Disney and has itself been inspiring improvement in Western animation. Non-Disney and Disney alike, though Disney is still the world standard.

Though even in that, Miyazaki has has not only matched but exceeded said standard. Is the literal modern Disney.

Not digging the humanified Wheatley and Glados. Its a good short though, has a pixar-esque design to it :D

ghostman1234252d ago

So...they turned GLaDOS into Lady Gaga.

toxic-inferno4252d ago

Not sure how some of the storyline would work with Wheatley being a human (or human-esque). Nevertheless, this is a great few seconds of animation!

Steam's highest-rated game is now less than a dollar in the Spring Sale

Jack writes: "Yet again browsing the latest offers in the Steam Spring Sale has led us to track down the very best. In terms of price to quality, we don’t think that it gets much better than this. Portal 2 is now less than a dollar, and if you haven’t got it already, now is the time to pick it up."

TheEroica52d ago

Portal deserves to be one of steams highest rated games... It's almost tetris levels of perfect game design.

TheEnigma31352d ago

It's a great game, but highly overrated. But for $1, it's an amazon deal.

Friendlygamer51d ago

Valve should bring their games to ps5

Kados51d ago (Edited 51d ago )

Gotta love Steam. Just got Portal 2 for .97 cents CAD. Should have been $1.29, selected the bundle with Portal 1 and 2, which gets a 25% discount, already have Portal 1, so it removes the cost of that, and still applies the full 25% bundle discount to Portal 2. 90% + 25% discount.

Friendlygamer50d ago

That's sweet, I've been thinking about building a modest pc to play some oldies

Infinite but not the first two games? Witcher 3 but not the first two games?? GTA V but not literally any of the games before it??? Portal 2 but not the first? Also if you're going to play Shadow of The Colossus play the remaster and not the remake. Can't say I disagree with the list but my man it's all over the place.

Name Last Name59d ago

I mean some sequels are objectively better and you don’t need to play the whole series.

Inverno58d ago

But most of these games have a story to follow, sure you can catch up with a YouTube vid but where's the fun in that?

LucasRuinedChildhood58d ago (Edited 58d ago )

A list like this isn't telling you not to play the previous games if you want to. It's just giving you legendary games to play.

But tbh, you don't always have to force yourself to play every entry in a franchise to get to the better ones.

- The vast majority of Witcher 3 players never played the first 2 and had a great time. The first 2 games aren't in the same league.
- The GTA games are self-contained with the odd fun reference. You can easily jump into any of them.
- The Shadow Of The Colossus remake looks and controls better than the original (plus it has a 60fps option while the remaster is just 30fps). New players will enjoy it more.
- Portal 2 is a lot better than Portal 1 and takes the concept much further gameplay-wise. Storywise, Portal 1 is fairly light too. Not that you shouldn't play it but realistically ... you'd love Portal 2 whether you play it or not (at lot of Portal 2 players have never played 1).

Bioshock 1 is the only one I agree with you on simply because it's one the best games of all time and arguably better than Infinite. No other setting like Rapture.

Looking at the list, I'd recommend playing Uncharted 1 before 2 but no doubt, 2 is the legendary one you have to play.

Inverno58d ago

I get it, but that's just my opinion on his opinion. I just think that before you play a sequel you should still play what came before it. Maybe it's just me but i find it fascinating playing through the first game in a series and seeing how it has evolved through its sequels. Like I said I don't disagree with the list, other than SoTC which I strongly believe the remaster of the original should be played above the remake.

AuraAbjure58d ago

Awesome list! Hot take on Fear (and it's hard af expansion Persaus Mandate!) Bioshock Infinite is stellar, so is the Witcher 3 and you nailed it by having Ocarina of Time. So many fantastic games! Gotta play 'em all! Next one on my list is Prey after I beat Dead Space 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction.

valve suck so much at making games now, opting just to smaug on top of an enormous pile of money,
that fans got so desperate that they have to make their own games.
this industry is fucking over.
