Xbox One games: why you shouldn't underestimate Microsoft's core line-up

Microsoft's Don Mattrick and Phil Spencer talk "quadruple-A" and flexible platforms.

dirigiblebill4005d ago

Please god don't let them **** up Fable 4. And let the new Rare game be a new Viva Pinata. And make Black Tusk's shooter genuinely different to Halo. While I'm on, god, how about a new Republic Commando and closure on Beyond Good and Evil 2?

dirigiblebill4005d ago (Edited 4005d ago )

Any chance of a new G-Police, too?

Jam_sponge4005d ago

G-Police is Sony's, I think.

sengoku4005d ago (Edited 4005d ago )

Sure M$ will have games at E3. i bet Ouya will to.

the real question is can they top what Sony has on the show floor at E3.

do they have games on xbone that will have the masses buying there unlimited cloud magic powered DRM TV remote.

thats the real question here.

ThanatosDMC4005d ago

G-police is such a fun game way back when... I had it working on my old PSP-2000.

aviator1894005d ago

I don't think it will be pinata...maybe some older franchise from rare.

dirigiblebill4005d ago

Yeah, I wasn't being entirely serious :p Killer Instinct seems most likely, given that MS has updated its trademark.

MariaHelFutura4005d ago

People said "Don't underestimate Microsoft" leading into the reveal. Look how that turned out.

http://www.reactiongifs.com...

pompombrum4005d ago

Truth hurts for deluded xbox fanboys.

wantonGamer4005d ago

Bwahaha, that gif is perfect for MSFT's console reveal.

Gildarts4005d ago (Edited 4005d ago )

1 billion dollar investment in nextgen games.. Who was saying that MS forgot about gamers again?

Sony simply doesn't have that sheer amount of money to spend on games.

Sony won't be able to do 15 exclusives in one year.

1 Superman > 4 Humans
Xbox One, It only does everything.

@Godmars
With the sheer amount of money they're putting into this. Why wouldn't they be able to? They have been silent on games for 3 years. We are about to see the results of it.

MariaHelFutura4005d ago

"Who was saying that MS forgot about gamers again?"

Their press conference and business policies.

Godmars2904005d ago

"Sony won't be able to do 15 exclusives in one year."

But can MS deliver on 15 exclusives in one year? Will they aim for 15 the next?

Gildarts4005d ago

@MariaHelFutura

Their press conference and their business policies?

Lies.

They clearly said that the event won't be focused on games before, during and after the event.

If you were still expecting more games. Then you were bound to be disappointed. Or you shouldn't have watched at all.

disposable4005d ago

Xbox One, it only does everything ELSE.

MariaHelFutura4005d ago

"They clearly said that the event won't be focused on games before, during and after the event."

Wow, you're actually right.

They said it will be about hardware. They barely talked about the specs, showed a peripheral and an app for 45 mins.

http://www.reactiongifs.com...

dirigiblebill4005d ago (Edited 4005d ago )

@MariaHelFutura

Agreed that it was all rather app-focused, but give them a break - they revealed the specs, discussed cloud computing applications, demoed Kinect, showed off the box AND let journalists go hands-on with aspects of the machine. They even let people take photos of the motherboard. Sony has yet to so much as show us what PS4 looks like.

duli144005d ago

Just like you said MS have been silent and have not put out any games in over 3 years! so the billion they're spending is to play catch up to Sony. Meanwhile Sony has been releasing exclusive after exclusive and probably have spent alot more money. 1 billion from MS will get you TIMED exclusive cod dlc, quantum something, forza and the rest is kinect

loulou4005d ago (Edited 4005d ago )

mariahelfuture

you are trying too hard to convince everybody that they should hate xbox and love playstation we get it..

and yes it was made clear before the announcement that the games would be shown at e3.

at the moment, e3 is do or die for xbox with me. but seeing you in EVERY SINGLE xbox thread is not going to persuade me or anyone i should think that they should ignore it now.

it is getting old watching the same people on here everyday. and no you are not alone in being a nuisance fanboy/girl whatever you are...

i aint defending microsoft, just sick of reading fantards comments

Godmars2904005d ago

@dirigiblebill:

They actually did little if none of that. System specs weren't gone into detail, likely because of obvious differences to the PS4. The Kinect stage "demo" was only recorded segments with even the TV control segment not having a unit on stage to play against. Xb1's box was uninspiring. Then off-stage where hey did allow reports to actually see Kinect in action there were signs of lag and the "tick" thing its known for. Slight but still present and likely damaging which is why they didn't live demo it on stage.

They are not as much of an upfront company as you'd like to think. You might say the same of Sony, but at the very least they went into detail about their system and didn't have to show off the actual box because their mouthpiece shot his off.

@Gildarts

"With the sheer amount of money they're putting into this. Why wouldn't they be able to?"

Too Human. Duke Nukem. The Last Guardian. FFvs13.

Problems crop up during development which can't be simply fixed by throwing money at it. Likewise if they try to keep to just getting titles out to get them out at a certain time, there's no real telling what quality of games you're going to get.

dirigiblebill4005d ago (Edited 4005d ago )

"They actually did little if none of that. System specs weren't gone into detail, likely because of obvious differences to the PS4."

http://oyster.ignimgs.com/m...
http://www.oxm.co.uk/54385/...

Quite enough for me. How much more detail were you expecting, exactly?

"The Kinect stage "demo" was only recorded segments with even the TV control segment not having a unit on stage to play against. Xb1's box was uninspiring. Then off-stage where hey did allow reports to actually see Kinect in action there were signs of lag and the "tick" thing its known for. Slight but still present and likely damaging which is why they didn't live demo it on stage."

Shady stuff as regards the live demo, I agree - but surely the fact that they were happy to let journos try it afterwards is a good thing? Has Sony let anybody try out that Media Molecule demo from the PS4 reveal yet?

"They are not as much of an upfront company as you'd like to think. You might say the same of Sony, but at the very least they went into detail about their system and didn't have to show off the actual box because their mouthpiece shot his off."

I would say exactly the same of Sony, yes. Frankly, my problem with the negativity people are sending Microsoft's way isn't that Microsoft doesn't deserve it, but that Sony's no less prone to spin, encroachment on consumer rights, dodgy pricing/online practises, etc. These are the chaps who Trojan-horsed the Blu-ray into living rooms, remember, inflating the PS3's price in the process.

Siding with one big publicly traded corporation is as bad as siding with another. They're all out to get us, you know.

Godmars2904005d ago

"Has Sony let anybody try out that Media Molecule demo from the PS4 reveal yet?"

You're comparing a single game - actually thought it was only a tech demo and Sony just let them play around to show off what the (MM) was considering with the PS4 - to a full on accessory like Kinect? And then what they showed the media was basic diagnostics. Nothing different from when Kinect wasn't called Kinect, and even then they had games to show it off with.

"but that Sony's no less prone to spin, encroachment on consumer rights, dodgy pricing/online practises, etc. These are the chaps who Trojan-horsed the Blu-ray into living rooms, remember, inflating the PS3's price in the process."

I'll give you all the pro-spin BS surrounding vibration early on with the PS3, but nothing Sony has done - or has yet to announce - measures up to what MS is requiring with Xb1.

Yes they - tried to - Trojan BR with the PS3, but only because it worked with DVD and the PS2. Its because that worked so well, was a different time, that the movie-player industry was in a position to counter the move. Offer cheaper single-players sooner.

And still that is nothing to all of the nonsense surrounding the Arcade SKU for the 360. Shows how badly Xbox defender's stances are to this day because they refuse to concede to the counter-points that in needing an expensive HDD which could only be gotten from MS, it was a true Trojan horse rip-off.

Mr Marvel4005d ago

...and how many of those 15 exclusives will actually be worth playing?

syphon324005d ago

@Gildarts, how much did they pay you to join their pr team? News flash, your in the one percent of flesh bags who thinks that way about Microscrew.

BG&E2 is ubisofts property and their only excuse for not progressing was because it was too much for this gen. Next gen is upon us so hopefully BG&E2 is in works now.

OlgerO4005d ago

this article just made me consider to jump from being a sony fanboy to potetnially buying the xbox one over PS4. If halve of this is true then this is going to get the best games we ever seen

3-4-54005d ago

Forza 5 & Fifa 14 will be solid games. Those are good series.

Other than that, we don't know much. Hardly any actual gameplay has been shown and trailers are just there to make people think the game is cooler/better than it actually is.

People who are proud of their game show off actual in game gameplay footage...or they should at least.

Tres214005d ago

i hated that Republic Commando never got a sequel that was my game & if they had it set up lik thay did wit 4 players now that'd be great

Wish they can backup their talk with sum new core games for their current system. All talk, no action.

Gildarts4005d ago

I think spending 1 billion dollar. Is action lol.

But you wouldn't care you're just a Sony fanboy.

ltachiUchiha4005d ago (Edited 4005d ago )

$1 billion dollars & name me all the amazing new exclusive core games that came out for the 360 in the last 4 years? Show me the amazing lineup. Oh u cant because all the new ip's were kinect games. Thats not impressive at all. I also own two 360's but you wouldnt no that because microsoft got you on a leash.

wiz71914005d ago

They said a minimal of $1 billion dollars.

Aceman184005d ago (Edited 4005d ago )

you know for a company who can't supposedly afford to fund any games they sure are doing a bang up job with these releases over the past 2 yrs or coming later this year.

Gravity Rush
Killzone Merc
The Last of Us
Beyond Two Souls
Tearaway
Playstation All-Stars
Starhawk
Soul Sacrifice
The Puppeteer
The Rain
Knack
Drive Club
Infamous Second Son
Killzone Shadow Fall
The Last Guardian (which will be out of PS4)
Uncharted Golden Abyss
Sly Cooper Thieves in Time
Unit 13
Sound Shapes

so please Gildarts explain to me how a company that possibly can't fund games. also if you believe all those 15 games are going to be AAA games you are either bats**t crazy or the biggest blind fanboy ive ever seen.

yugovega4005d ago

don't underestimate their first party halo games sells very well the tweens, just like twilight did.

Thepharaoh4005d ago

How can we underestimate something we don't even know exists

GamingWorldPeace4005d ago

Because 8 games were already leaked even before E3.

http://xboxonedaily.com/201...

Based on the leaked images, the speculations are:
1. Quantum Break
2. Crackdown 3
3. Forza 5
4. A mystery new game??
5. A new Halo
6. A new game from Rare.
7. Ryse
8. Unknown. A new Fable or Black Tusk game?

Thepharaoh4005d ago

link is broken
forza is overdone and easy,
Quantum is some tv tie in garbage
crackdown has fallen
fable has fallen
microsoftt unfortunately is going to kill rare 's game
the mystery game is unknown
ryse is kinect and to shrouded

having black tusk and halo is not a lineup

DevilishSix4005d ago

Well if thats eight of the 15 games, I wouldn't be all that excited really.

felidae4005d ago

i don't care for any kind of game if the "used game thing" is going to happen as it's being teased.

The Meerkat4005d ago

What if 360 games are half the price of PS4 games because the devs know they'll sell more due to the no used game thing?

I'm just saying there must be some reason why MS look like they are shooting themselves in the foot.

rainslacker4004d ago (Edited 4004d ago )

Won't happen. That means you have to sell more than twice as many on the Xbox to get the same amount of revenue. Publishers know people are willing to spend $60, and there are some that want to charge more.

And to date, there is no evidence to support that games will sell significantly more with no used games. In fact, recent events show that many people would avoid them, causing them to sell less.

Think of it like this.

Say they pick up an extra 50K sales because people really want the game. But on the flip side 100K people don't buy the game because of the used issue. We could switch inverse the argument, but either way we'd just be speculating.

And that's the point. There is nothing to show that it will improve game sales, and there is no reason to trust publishers to do right by the consumer by keeping prices low.

Jimquisition explains why.

Microsoft's Absurd Antics Have Me Scared For Dishonored And Arkane Lyon's Future

With Arkane Austin no more and Lyon living for who knows how long, the superb Dishonored is in serious danger; Microsoft cannot be trusted.

Relientk7721h ago

I love the Dishonored series so much and really want Dishonored 3. Microsoft better not screw this up.

JEECE18h ago

I mean, I think the fans will probably kill Arkane Lyon by cooking up reasons to hate whatever they do next without playing it. I've never seen a game so artificially disliked as Deathloop.

thesoftware73018h ago

Lol, why don't we just say, we are worried about all studios owned by MS now. They will keep closing studios until they have none left ...🙄

Skuletor15h ago

Just merge them all into a single studio, have it churn out a single Call of Duty every year and call it a day, lol.

Barlos15h ago

Don't be scared, you'll be fine.

Skuletor15h ago

It's exputer, fine is one word I would not associate with them.

Profchaos14h ago

I think it's becoming clear based on matt bootys comments there's no future for any IP that can't sell above 10 million within the launch window. But is also a small game that gives them prestige

/S it's beyond a joke right now

More Job Losses At Xbox, “There’s More To Come”: Paul Thurrott

Paul Thurrott in a recent episode commented on the on-going Microsoft fiasco hinting at more job losses and that "there's more to come".

There won't be no more acquiring game publishers from Microsoft in the future . Xbox has to pay Microsoft back. It might take two decades to do that.

sagapo2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I don’t understand what you’re saying. Xbox IS microsoft so there’s no “paying back “.
And MS gross profit in 2023 was over 140 billion dollars so forget your 2 decades.

Unless you mean the money MS invested in Xbox (acquisitions included) and the time it will take for xbox as a brand to gain that money back on it’s own, then yeah, that could take a while.

romulus232d ago

The better term to use might be return on investment, xbox is simply a division of Microsoft one that MS can easily do away with if profit margins are not met. So in that regard he's right, if xbox isn't showing the expected return on investment the higher ups are expecting than it's unlikely Microsoft will acquire any other studios any time soon, especially if they are spending billions buying developers just to shut them down in the end.

MrBaskerville2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Xbox is a division that they discussed shutting down but doubled down on after Gamepass was pitched.

It needs to make money at some point. Big money.

rokos2d ago

According to Statista the net income of Microsoft is about $72.4 billion dollars which is a bit lower than last year profit. That is almost as much as Activision's acquisition but I assume that would be a one off since it costs so much plus I see how their focus has been shifted to AI, thus any major future investments will probably be in that area.

Markusb332d ago

i think you are really missing the point

VariantAEC1d 17h ago

@romulus23
That is not why MS buys studios. They might continue to buy because it's about taking that sweet sweet IP out of the corporate husks of their acquisitions.

Xbox isn’t a separate company from Microsoft. It’s all Microsoft.

Abear212d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Let’s be real, this is the media spinning all the acquisitions and liquidations of said developers and spinning it to make M$ the villain.

This was bound to happen, a bigger slice of pie and cut costs, when the games come they stand to make more and that’s their agenda—it was the writing on the wall when the sales went through and legally all those who approved the sale and mergers knew this would happen.

Snowflakes need to realize business is ugly and you can cry all you want but this is how capitalism works. And it works.

That said, M$ needs to steer the narrative and grab hold of all this, make their plans known, hype the hell out of all those dead IP’s they plan to revive, and be honest about the timeline. This is likely to involve mobile and IP on other consoles, and most people realize that.

The problem is this company is incapable of being transparent and seems to often want to dissuade and confuse is customer base. The lack of E3 has hurt Microsoft and I don’t think they know how to properly or effectively market their brand anymore.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 1d 17h ago
jwillj2k42d ago

There really needs to be a class action lawsuit here. You buy these companies just to put people out of jobs. And it’s not like something happened to derail their plans this WAS the plan. Microsoft has no business in this space at all.

franwex2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Microsoft has been doing this for years. They simply want the IPs. Look at Nokia. Look at Skype. This time it simply expanded to games. Gaming is not as important to Microsoft’s executives as it was to the founders too. Bill Gates was willing to sell the og Xbox at a loss. Steve Balmer approved the red ring of death fiasco. This CEO isn’t really a gamer.

-Foxtrot2d ago

Maybe it's time though to put a stop to it and use a big giant like Microsoft as a huge example to the rest of these big companies.

There has to be a line drawn somewhere.

People like the FTC and the like went against Microsoft yet their Actvision deal was still allowed to go through yet look what's happened...it's not even Acitivisions studios aswell, it's Bethesdas.

VariantAEC1d 17h ago

Years?

Try several decades, and in the gaming space 2.3 decades.

Jon615862d ago

You do realize this happens in ALL industries? Or are you just saying this because it is Microsoft? In any case I feel for those that are being let go but the trch industry is suffering right now.

jwillj2k41d 21h ago (Edited 1d 21h ago )

This absolutely does NOT happen all the time. Let me know the last time 1 company with a terrible product track record spent 100 billion onto acquire MULTIPLE successful companies in under a year only to shut them down and stop making their products regardless of how successful they were. Not merge them, completely shut them down.

And you can’t use Microsoft in your example.

Notellin1d 21h ago (Edited 1d 21h ago )

Class action lawsuit? The law is on their side and protects them at all costs. There are no rules to protect the people at the bottom.

jwillj2k41d 21h ago

Not true when it comes to mass layoff do your research.

RNTody2d ago

Ninja Theory, Perfect Dark, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Wolfenstein 3, Dishonored, Prey, Doom, Quake... something tells me that bad things are going to happen to these entities under Microsoft.

MrDead2d ago

ID software, the makers of Doom and Wolfenstein that have been with us since 1991 could be gone and MS will keep the IPs.

I hope some of these studios can buy their freedom from MS otherwise this is going to be even more devastating for the industry and gamers.

Yui_Suzumiya2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

That's exactly what I'm worried about. I've been a fan of id since Wolfenstein 3D and I'm honestly afraid.

lodossrage2d ago

Toys for Bob saw the writing on the wall and bought themselves out.

Wouldn't be the first time a company did that under MS either. Bungie and Twisted Pixel did the same. Considering what just happened, I can see some other devs trying to buy themselves out too.

anast2d ago

Good thing the bosses of all those small studios made their money.

glenn19792d ago

they cant do it right now they will get burned

XiNatsuDragnel2d ago

Phil and his team need to be gone

lodossrage2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Won't make a difference.

The whole structure needs to be overhauled. Anyone that replaces Phil will be no different than him, Mattrick, or anyone else.

Until the company changes how they go about business, nothing will change

glenn19792d ago

I just don't have any idea what they would do , they have done sooo much damage on their xbox brand, they have a show at July or June I think, but will it even matter even they show amazing games, idkn

lodossrage2d ago

True,

But they may as well get it over with. Whether it happens now or later, the burning is going to hit the same.

Reality is the ONE move that can alleviate a lot of this is the one move they can't make. Remove day 1 from gamepass.
