Xbox 720 leaker: PS4 fans are writing off Microsoft based on "literally nothing"

Thurrott slams "knee-jerk reaction" to always-online rumours [OXM]

dedicatedtogamers4048d ago (Edited 4048d ago )

A lot of people will write off something based on "literally nothing". It's why they say first impressions are important. It's not just PS4 fans writing it off. Plenty of gamers from different platforms are concerned about it. Of course, there will be people who end up buying it anyway and who brag about it being the best console ever. It's just the way the world works.

LackTrue4K4048d ago

You don't have to worry about ps3/4 fans writing off the new Xbox (to begin there Sony fans).
"Worry about Xbox fans writing off there next gen Xbox"
Many have already said there jumping ship from Microsoft

sway_z4048d ago

@dedicatedtogamers

'...Of course, there will be people who end up buying it anyway and who brag about it being the best console ever'

So true, and they're the worst kind of people, cos they don't have a mind of their own.

@onyoursistersback

'...Worry about Xbox fans writing off there next gen Xbox. Many have already said there jumping ship from Microsoft'

Yeah, I see your point too. Basically, all it will take is for MS to debunk all the negative rumours and show a bunch of new games at E3, and watch the same clowns 'Jump Back In'.

These types of people are literally dumb cattle sheeples.

anonymous923484048d ago (Edited 4048d ago )

@sway_z

Many? You mean a few fanboys on N4G.

Most people are just waiting for the console to be announced, before making any decisions.

Anyone that makes a decision based soley on a rumour, is an idiot.

JsonHenry4048d ago

I greatly preferred my Xbox360 over my PS3 this generation. But **if** the always online thing proves to be true then I will be getting the PS4 only. Which makes me sad because I really want to own both but I just don't live in an area with reliable enough internet to have an online only console.

sengoku4048d ago

and there right for doing so.
come on what's to know

dicks like Orth work there (not for long)
always-online,
no used games not confirmed but very likely
windows 8 like dash controlled with kinect 2.0
no exclusives worth mentioning.
that about sums it up.

yeah i think i'll pass thanks..

Cueil4048d ago

@sengoku
1. Everything is rumor...
2. Always Online doesn't mean Required Online
3. All of Microsofts new (including the Xbox 360) product use the "Metro" style interface first used on Zune HD
4. You're the same person who when asked what exclusives the Xbox has can only name 2... 3 at the max.
5. You don't sum anything up you're just being contrite.

Boody-Bandit4048d ago (Edited 4048d ago )

Included is a pic of my triple panel gaming rig, Fanatec CSR Elite FFB wheel (best wheel that is compatible with the XBox 360) and it takes 3 360's to use this triple panel display to play Forza. BUT I also own 2 other 360's for other areas in my home to game.

Okay, with that aside. Am I now allowed to express concern if these rumors turn out to be facts? Sorry but this article is pure flame bait. Is there Sony fans chuckling and jumping on the coat tails of these rumors hoping they are true so they can find fault or rub salt in the wounds? I'm sure there is. BUT I know a lot of 360 gamers that are very concerned these rumors might be true.

Most of the people I talk to so they would most "likely" end up still getting the next offering from MS but they will do so reluctantly. Myself, something like this, again and IF ONLY they are true, could turn me off completely. I rent and purchase used a lot more than purchase new. I'm not hurting for cash but only buy certain titles at full MSRP from specific genres that I know I will play for more than a couple weeks.

I am hoping these are rumors that MS will refute come E3 but I'm a concerned if they were why is MS at the very least not saying, "people wait until E3". All will be known then. When the dust settles. I don't see MS going this route. Always on hopefully is rhetoric and doesn't mean you always need an active connection to the internet. More importantly I hope all these used and rental rumors are pure nonsense.

Signed: An anxious but slightly nervous 360 fan, NOT a Sony fanboy.

DragonKnight4048d ago

@Cueil: You say everything is a rumour then you say "Always Online doesn't mean Required Online" as if you know that for sure. You're contradicting yourself and ignoring what this leaker is saying. In his own words, he's seen documentation that an internet connection is necessary for the Durango to function, he also further on says it's too late in development to change that now, so how do you know that it's not required?

BX814048d ago

I don't think many are jumping ship until they announce the new xbox and it's features.

sengoku4048d ago (Edited 4048d ago )

@Cueil

well yeah there are only a few exclusives.
the ones i use to play are already milked to death.

as for windows 8 style kinect 2.0 gui.
you know there going to force hand-gestures and voice commands now. it's not 100% but why els would kinect be forced to be connected to function??

i know it looks cool in the movies but i just want to play a game, i don't want to hold up my hand like i would in a class room to use the bathroom.
and don't like talking and especially repeating my self to a machine to eject disk or power on.

sorry but the direction they have been going for years now and the always-online + kinect 2.0 included and must be connected to function stuff, is just rubbing me the wrong way.

let's see there console but, my money is on it not being my cup of tea.

sikbeta4048d ago

@onyou

46 million XBLive Users active right now, do you really think they'll ditch their years of investment? I don't see that happening always online or not

O-T

Truth, no one saw what MS got under their sleeve, IF X720 becomes a success... lot of you will be eating so much crow... it's going to be a nice spectacle to watch :D

loulou4048d ago (Edited 4048d ago )

another day with the same fanboys spewing the same stuff which is not yet true or false..

could please someone tell me what it feels like to be a pathetic fanboy??

Kurt Russell4048d ago

If it's true I'll jump ship. If it's not I'll weigh up my options when I know everything about the 2 headliners.

4048d ago
bangshi4048d ago

I thought it was Xbox fan boys who are writing Microsoft off and cursing them for this always-online crap.

Why would PS4 fan boys care what the 720 is doing to make people opt for a PS4!

nukeitall4048d ago (Edited 4048d ago )

@onyoursistersback:

"Many have already said there jumping ship from Microsoft"

That is the thing, historically Xbox LIVE Gold membership has increased every year while the next console isn't likely to be released at the end of the year.

Basically what it means is depending on what grand plans MS has, it might just blow everyone away.

Remember when Netflix was released on Xbox 360? That is when Netflix adoption exploded, and made huge waves. A very simple feature executed very well.

Xbox TV might just be that, or it might not, but we won't know for a while. Same thing with the Wii, nobody thought it would be the superstar it became!

deal with it! :D

Darrius Cole4048d ago (Edited 4048d ago )

@Cueil - Post. 1.1.5

Cueil said in Post 1.1.5
.............................
"2. Always Online doesn't mean Required Online "
.............................

Actually, in this case it does mean "Required Online," that's what's got everyone so upset. Either the new Xbox will play a game when it is not connected to the internet or it won't. All the rumors and leaks say that it will not play a game if it is not connected to the internet. Since this is a game console we are talking about, this means that the system will not perform it's intended purpose without the internet. That is very much required online.

The fact is no one cares whether has to be "Always online" or not. We only care whether it has to be "online for my game to work." If the only time the internet was required was when I want to play my game, then that is enough to make it broken. The system is slave to the internet, and not fit for use, or purchase.

The only defense possible is for someone to say "it's not true, the next Xbox will play a game if there is no internet connection".

It's as cut and dried and as black and white as can be. There is no wiggle room here. Either it will play the game or it will not; and these rumors either are true or they are not.

FITgamer4048d ago

@ onyoursisterback "THERE Sony fans" @ sengoku "and THERE right for doing so" [THEY'RE]

pixelsword4048d ago

Yeah, because it's only PS4 fans complaining.

Tr10wn4048d ago

Personally i can't find nothing for me in the PS4 so i'm waiting for MS to announce what they got but i think i will stick with my PC since PS4 games are still running 1080p@30fps so i will assume the same goes to the new Xbox.

Rex_Aeternae4048d ago

@Tr10wn
Not all games are going to be 30fps in fact most will probably be (1080p) 60fps (for example battlefield 4) and as for games that are puzzlers and such, 60fps doesn't really do anything to help the game out.
But, if you only want the super incredible deluxe graphics that "only the PC master race can achieve" then you sir don't truly appreciate the story, music, and emotion evoking-ness that we should judge a game on.
Yes, I will admit that for some people having great graphics will make the game easier to like and play but it should not be the first thing you judge a game on.

Plus your use of a double negative means that you actually can find something in the PS4 that you like. Grammar . . . it's a lifestyle.

SilentNegotiator4048d ago (Edited 4048d ago )

Xbox fan(boy)s love to pull the old "Emmanuel 'Sony fan' Goldstein" whenever any sort of doubt or dissatisfaction happens to anything Xbox.

The entire internet isn't happy that leaked documents, angry MS developer leaders, third party developers, and a hundred other sources suggest that the next Xbox will be online only?

"It's the Sony fanboys' fault!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
--Delusional fanboy

Yi-Long4047d ago (Edited 4047d ago )

... is pretty much what MS has shown the last 3-4 years at E3 when it comes to stuff that interests me as a gamer, with their main focus on Kinect and dashboard apps.

THAT'S why I've lost interest in their new console. MS has lost it's focus on GAMES for ME.

I started this generation as a big fan of the original Xbox, never having owned a PS1 or PS2, and I also loved my 360. Still do actually, although mainly for 3rd party games and XBLA, and ofcourse the terrific controller.

But somewhere along the line, Microsoft has seriously dropped the ball, and after a very slow and poor start from Sony this generation, they really picked up that ball in the last 2 years orso, remaining a focus on cool new original IPs and core-games, and scored BIG with their PSN+, along with their PSN being free anyway.

The 'Always Online' rumours now surrounding the new Xbox, just means I won't even consider buying it.

MS is being run by fools nowadays. Sadly. The ONLY GREAT thing about the 360 the last 3 years, has been an absolutely fantastic output of games on XBLA, with some tremendous titles. And somehow MS has managed to piss off many of those great developers one way or another, so it's doubtful they'll be developing exclusively for the next MS console...

limewax4047d ago

So 208 comments and still nobody has noticed that Paul Thurrott also confirmed the always online necessity and even that MS are focusing on TV in this very article?!

For the love of god, read before you comment people. There's people in here trying to say its all rumor just because that's what the headline says. Try reading the rest of it first.

Funny how it reads PS4 fans when it's mainly 360 owners who are up in arms about this.

I would too, if my console of choice stood the chance of being online only.

InTheLab4048d ago

agreed. The next Xbox was not on my radar based on how poorly MS has performed these last 3 or so years and the lack of free online. This latest bit of controversy kinda made me say..."huh...whatever&quo t;.

zebramocha4048d ago

@k2d I don't know why you are getting so many disagrees?as a ps fan only thing i want to see from Ms is,specs,games/features and if any of these rumors turn out to be true.

k2d4048d ago

The closer you hit to home, the more flak you get in return. :)

MikeMyers4048d ago (Edited 4048d ago )

It's not just Sony fans but also current Xbox 360 owners. If it requires an online connection to work then a lot of people will write it off. What I do agree with is not to have knee-jerk reactions until we get official details on everything we should have clarification on. That includes the PS4. Sony hasn't revealed everything either, although what they have shown and said is very positive so far.

IF (i'll say again IF) rumors are true about the next Xbox...

$500, always online, no used game, more kinect functionality and titles... yep Microsoft's got a winner on their hands. /s

Peppino74048d ago

They're writing them off based on rumors based off of devs saying stuff like "It needs a constant connection." I wouldn't say thats literally nothing. Maybe if it came from a Joe Shmoe, then yeah.

TheSaint4047d ago

This, also Xbox need to pull their collective fingers from their A-holes and give us something concrete to base our decision off.

JANF4048d ago

Have you guys notice how everyone saying anything positive about MS have 2 or less bubbles while the ones saying anything positive PS or negative MS have three or more. I wonder why?

anyway, I say lets wait and see, If this rumors turns out to be false a lot of people here will look foolish.

CC-Tron4048d ago (Edited 4048d ago )

You wonder why? Here's a clue. Sony4G.

jacksons984048d ago

What has MS done in the last couple years for games? 360 owners have literally been left hanging. Sony is the only company supporting hobby gamers and N4G is a website for gamers.

IRetrouk4048d ago

Load of crap m8, im more of a sony fan than anything else and i have been on two bubbles for years.

BlackTar1874048d ago (Edited 4048d ago )

i play everything but i support Sony focus alot more and i have 3 bubbles. Ohh less then you.

Maybe people losing bubbles because all they seem to do on this site is cry like little school girls about being outnumbered and blah blah blah.

never seen such victim card kids in my life.

kenshiro1004048d ago

Give me a break.

You lose bubbles based on complaints and screaming 'fanboys!!' instead of engaging in a productive debate.

Th3 Chr0nic4047d ago

You speak as if N4G had a "community" behind it to make the bubble rating system have any meaning to it. This site is more like a "trollunity" if anything.

@dedicatedtogamers

You're right about people buying it anyway. The majority of the noise is from Sony fanboys. People that are willing to buy any brand will buy both, all three or whichever they think is best. All of the talk is just N4G talk. If the 720 proves to be a better console they will go with the wind.

Eyeco4048d ago

I'm not writing of the Nextbox, I may be getting bad vibes based off Microsoft's last few years but I'm not writing it off, because the console hasn't even revealed yet, and that's what's pi$$ing me off the most that it hasn't even revealed yet.

Realistically the 720 (as with the PS4) should have been announced and released 2-3 years ago, the 360 is almost 10 years old and we still don't know anything about it's successor, all we have are these negative rumours,

If we were in 2009 then I easily would have dismissed them, but the fact that where this late into the generation 2013 and so far only one next gen console has been released, and all we have of the Nextxbox, are rumours, bad ones that is, it's really off putting and it makes me wonder what Microsoft has been doing for the past 4 years.

Gimmemorebubblez4048d ago (Edited 4048d ago )

This is the part that worries me;
"Thurrott also reckons Microsoft has less to fear from other console manufacturers than from digital media outlets, presumably in light of such initiatives as Xbox TV, under which the manufacturer has founded a studio in Los Angeles to work on unique, bespoke television programming for Xbox Live."

And this:
"The problem Microsoft has has nothing to do with Sony or Nintendo anymore, it's Roku and AppleTV," he said. "The market for hardcore video games, the market of people will always buy the next Gears of War game, the next Halo game, the next Call of Duty game, it's fairly finite."

I got a SMART TV so I dont need TV services, I want GAMES MICROSOFT.

Saigon4048d ago

Yeah...I read that also, and I noticed it right away. This is what scares me. But the sad part, is that I am not surprised. in an IM message to another n4g user, we had a great conversation on this, and the other day i found an article that contained an Xbox tablet, MS is thinking of releasing. To me that proved why they are pushing Always on. Maybe this is the only way to allow the tablet to always be connected. Who knows. they are switching their competition and going into the realm of casual versus hardcore gamer market. either way this E3 is going to be interesting.

Leviathan4048d ago

Xbox 720 leaker: PS4 fans are writing off Microsoft based on "literally nothing coming out for it except a few kinekt titles"

1Victor4048d ago

have anyone though that the "always on" comments from orth was Microsoft way to test the waters imagine how bad it would be at E3 if they say one more thing our console is always on and you can't play used games as all games are locked to your account/console.the article writer assume that because some games he play have online parts that all games does need a online connection.can anyone tell me honestly how many console games are MMO only on xbox for it to warrant a "always on approach.

omi25p4048d ago

"First impressions are the most important"

How can you have a first impression on something that has yet to be even confirmed it exists.

Its the equivalent of hating someone you have never met, heard of, spoken too. Because someone told you that they were annoying.

This website is literally the only website bad mouthing a fairy tale every single chance it gets.
Some of the users are the most hypocritical biased morons you will ever see.

For example i have literally seen one user say this in two different articles.

RUMOUR SONY TO BLOCK PREOWNED GAMES

"Well its understandable really. Sony spend alot of money releasing these perfect games it must be heartbreaking to watch when people are playing there game with out actually giving Sony the reward they deserve for Being the one publisher who cares"

RUMOUR 360 TO BLOCK USED GAMES

"Typically M$. Screwing over its "fan" base again.
So now not only to you have to pay for online you can even save a little money by buying used games. It isn't even as if there are any exclusives worth buying anyway. If anybody buys the nextbox knowing it does this they are nothing but a sheep"

Saigon4048d ago

That is sad that they actually said that because it means they really didn't read the pattens. I understand that this is a rumor, but the content discussed is in favor to be relevant. I think what makes this even more creditable is the fact its coming from an Xbox website and again, the information discussed states the subject to be true. You might disagree with this, but the facts are in 'Read full story' link above.

AngelicIceDiamond4048d ago

PS4 fans are writing off Microsoft based on "literally nothing"

Lol of course fanboys will take any excuse to ride off the Xbox. But just like @dedicatedtogamers said, plenty of people on the net are upset obout the rumors.

We virtually know nothing about the Xbox besides this "Alaways on" rumor that continues to make its usual rounds.

But, despite the negativity shrouding the unannounced console, I have a feeling the new Xbox is gonna turn out to be a damn good machine. And great showing from MS.

oof464048d ago

Plenty of Xbox fans concerned.

TheoreticalParticle4048d ago

Here's the thing for the leaker. Assume that the always-online DRM is true.

Yeah, while they're using an always-online system and there's only a handful of people online, and nobody's stressing the system, it's fine, and it's totally non-intrusive.

But there are a billion ways from prototype to production that something non-intrusive can come to be exceptionally INTRUSIVE.

potenquatro4048d ago

This always online sux. Unless it's a 4g Lte option like W8 on tablets with some contract for less money SKU. Not allowing you to play software that you legally own however, would not hold water in court and I don't think all devs would like that. I personally have privacy and kid issues, or atleast my kid got issues, so my Surface and ipads are NOT 4g and my router is off when im not online(I live in a big city, this also stops people from trying to steal it). Basically my phones are the only thing always connected and i turn those off all the time. A "always online" NextBox would be horrible. MS, just deny this already. Between PS4, nextbox and their respective accesories and fees I'm gonna be dropping around 15-16 hundred in a clouple months. Ain't nobody got time for that!!

fr0sty4048d ago

From the "Official" Xbox magazine, saying there is "nothing wrong" with always being online... = Damage control topped off with a hint of spin.

showtimefolks4048d ago

no we are writing them off based of what they did in last 3 years, and that's coming from a day one buyer of xbox360 and original xbox

once kinect was introduced than they forgot about core gamers, they thought that market had been maxed out but look at sony still selling ps3 strongly and still delivering top notched games

personally i am tired of halo, gears, forza. I like fable, alan wake and crackdown but all 3 of those IP's have huge potential but MS just doesn't care since they don't sell millions of copies

also watch the last 3 E3'd MS conferences, I dare you to watch them back to back to back and than come back to me. we have mostly kinect crap and dance games followed by maybe a showing of next halo or gears

this time they don't have the advantage of coming out 1st or RROD, they better come out with a good plan otherwise i see sony demolishing them in every sense. Sony under Kaz's leadership reminds me of old sony which was aggressive and use advertisement to their advantage

so if expecting greatness out of MS or next xbox is hating on ms than so be it but when another company provides better value and more bang for my buck but i have every right to support that company with my money

kenshiro1004048d ago (Edited 4048d ago )

The fact that Microsoft hasn't denied these rumors is troubling. But they are rumors so we have to wait and see what happens.

And there are plenty of 360 fans that are worried about the rumors as well. I don't see why the journalist felt the need to say 'PS4 fans are worried about nothing.'

Some people own two consoles you know...

Syntax-Error4048d ago (Edited 4048d ago )

PS4 hasn't shown me why I need to have it. My PS3 has tons of life and can still WOW me. I find no reason to worry about next gen right now. Let's see of most of you are going to give a shit when GTA5 releases

50Terabytespersec4047d ago

I want Solid State Drive in Raid 0!!!500MB per sec
on Xbox 720
80GB is fine for me!

Then I will gladly tell Sony to F off!!! LOL
This is the only way I will Buy a MS product over the PS4!

Psn8004047d ago

No news is good news the old saying is . In Microsoft's case they need too start showing there hand or they will get left way behind because everyone I know is per-ordering the Ps4 already .

4047d ago
extermin8or4047d ago

not strictly true, they have all the info so far on the Ps4 to go on, Sony's track record of exclusive games and the closer and better developer relations Sony now has, to go on. Granted they don't have anything other than rumors on the net xbox but if people want to make a decision then they are basing it on something- also if they listen to him isn't that the same as listening to the rumors...

DragonKnight4048d ago

For starters, this guy sounds like a teenage girl. Lots of "like" and "by the way."

Secondly just because for you Xbox is an almost entirely online experience, doesn't mean an always-online requirement is a good thing. For the millionth time, there is no such thing as a 100% consistently stable network connection, and that includes places like Japan who have a far better infrastructure for it than the Western world.

"Thurrott claims he has access to documents that reveal the next Xbox "must be internet-connected to use", but says he's not sure of the precise ramifications."

You'd have to be an idiot not to know what that means. It's plain as day. You need to be connected to use Durango. No connection, no usage. What part of that is ambiguous?

""I look at all this stuff that I've seen about Durango and I think, 'it's all positive.' I don't really see any bad news here at all. Like to me, everything I've seen about this is really positive."

Because you're an idiot.

"It's amazing to me that, based on like no information at all, everyone is like freaking out about everything. Aside from this online thing, by the way, the number one question I've gotten from people is, 'What does it look like?' Who gives a shit what it looks like?"

No information? You're the one that leaked this "online thing." YOU just said it requires a network connection to use. That's not "freaking out about nothing." You're either calling yourself a liar, or you're an idiot. And I'm pretty sure the next concern is about the Durango playing used games, which leaked information claims won't be possible as the Durango will force a complete harddrive installation of every game and lock each game to that one console. Clearly there is reason for suspicion.

""The market for hardcore video games, the market of people will always buy the next Gears of War game, the next Halo game, the next Call of Duty game, it's fairly finite. It's a decent market, yada yada yada, it's not the market for tablets, it's not the market for smartphones."

*Facepalm* You know so little.

As for the rest of the article where Thurott is then backpeddling, but then not backpeddling, and then backpeddling again, you're the problem. It seems that most of what you're saying is "The Durango will have an always-online requirement and you're just going to have to deal with it." And you think people are having a "knee-jerk" reaction? You haven't been paying attention to Assassin's Creed 2 on PC, Diablo 3 on PC, or SimCity (even though you mention it) much have you? This isn't a knee-jerk reaction, this is an experienced reaction. Gamers know what always-online means and have damned good reasons for not wanting or liking it. You really look foolish by claiming gamers have nothing to complain about.

Cueil4048d ago

Steam... it works ok (though it was a pile of garbage for a long time)

DragonKnight4048d ago (Edited 4048d ago )

Steam is a bad example. It has its problems as well. It may have an offline mode, but after awhile it will force you to go online to check for updates and ensure you're not playing pirated games. Let's not forget also the ease with which people are banned, the fact that you don't get refunds easily after your first one, the fact you don't own the games you buy from there and can easily be locked out of playing your games because of that.

Steam is only lauded because of its various sales really.

potenquatro4048d ago

Steam still doesn't work perfect. The new UI is cute but unnesesary and it seem they make u be online more and more often. Also if you loose connection before a game can cloudsync when u quit it will almost certainly make you be online to restart. It's nice that they always update their games but always updating the Steam app itself gets annoying aswell

dumahim4048d ago

"For me, Xbox 360 is almost entirely an online experience,"

He seems to be taking the Orth mentality on this. His way is how it is for everyone. Hey, great, you're online almost all the time. Me? Almost never. I use my 360 for games, and only games. I rarely play online with other people, so I don't want and I don't need an always on console.

Cueil4048d ago

so you wouldn't want a console that automatic kept itself updated with newest firmware and updated your games while you were not using it? There are positives to having a always connected device

dumahim4048d ago

@Cueil

No. I can do that now with my PS3 and I have it turned off. I don't want it starting up every night just do download stuff I probably don't even want, at least for game patches. I'm usually done with the game within a week or so. No point having it keep downloading updates for games I'm done with.

System updates might be another thing, but they're usually infrequent enough to not bother me. If 10 minutes out of my day every few weeks is too much, I probably shouldn't be playing games anyway. Besides, I usually do something else anyway while a system update is running.

extermin8or4047d ago

@Cueil Ummmy ps3 does that whilst turned off, and my PS4 will do it whilst turned off/on standby without turning on fully and using a background processor with highly reduced power intake... and so far as we are are it doesn't always have to be online

Cocozero4048d ago

Its because they are scared, MS beat Sony this gen taking nearly half of their PS2 userbase and they know next gen MS will take their remaining fanbase.

Scare tactics are their only weapon against the 720 storm

IcicleTrepan4048d ago

Microsoft might not of beaten them, but they shore did take a huge amount of their user base away from them.

joeorc4048d ago (Edited 4048d ago )

"Microsoft might not of beaten them, but they shore did take a huge amount of their user base away from them."

Taking them away is not the same as that same gamer now buying both system's.

I would say its more of the same Gamer's buying both systems, than just only having one system or the other.

Microsoft has expanded the xbox platform consumer base this generation, but on the same token, many of the same people that were only xbox only gamer's have now or is also planning to gather a Playstation or Nintendo system or other platforms also and vice versa.

this may in fact be the very first generation where all three game companies all have their current generation systems reach over 100 million+ sales. Sony has Sold about 153 million PS2's and it's Production ceased now so based on the number's right now slightly less than 50 million over 100 million consumer's most likely is now split among Nintendo , Microsoft and Sony add in Apple and Android and other companies like Samsung etc.

So its not just Microsoft took them all, if anything this part of the market is pretty much staying with the 100 to 150 million mark and has stayed that level for thos part of the market for quite some time, though that is a very large number due to that being a install base that can account for each of those consumer's buy 1 to many game systems. More of multi console system owner's than just one system now. which is a very good thing.

insomnium24048d ago (Edited 4048d ago )

@joe

Don't bother. I've tried reasoning with peole about this "same person buys more than one console so win all around" but it just won't sink. They have got to speak about marget sharez and try to make MS's success somehow into a bad thing for Sony.

Sony is in line to sell 130-150 million PS3's. How this can be turned into a failure is beyond me. Fanboy is a fanboy that's all there is to it.

puamdefokejpn4048d ago (Edited 4048d ago )

Yes ,..real shitstorm of laughter,.. when always online,.. turns out to be true,.. They just lost 80 percent of consumers globally,..

It is completely insane proposition for a gaming device,..Thank you for using the internet I am paying for so you can have absolute control of the software and hardware I've bough.. This is so insane,.. and probably illegal,..I need to pay someone third party, monthly fee so I can even use the device I've legally bought,..? Gimme a break. God forbid my internet goes down for more than 2 minutes), Or have capped internet.. lolololo

and they can backdoor datamine your home with algorithms ,..So they can advertize crap to you (best case scenario) O how scared are PlayStation people,..

Go Microsoft !!!,.. Straight to hell that is,..

Yep, their main concern are the gamers /sarcasm

stuna14048d ago

And you know this how? Talk about blind loyalty! From the looks of things Microsoft would like nothing better than have you paying through every orifice in your body, paying specific attention to your anus.

KillrateOmega4048d ago

I see why you have only one bubble...

"...MS beat Sony this gen taking nearly half of their PS2 userbase and they know next gen MS will take their remaining fanbase."

You're saying that MS will take the other 50% of their userbase? So you mean to tell me that Sony will end up with a userbase of 0%, because by the end of the next-gen, not a single person on the planet will own and use a PS4. Sure, great logic...

Karpetburnz4048d ago

Do you only care about sales and marketshare? do you even care if the Next Xbox is a joke with no games? heck you can have your marketshares, while I will be enjoying the PS4 and all the great games it has to offer.

Only die hard fanboys would choose sales over games lol.

How is it that PS4 fans are singled out for doing this? Its stupid to take rumors as fact and form an opinion based on that. However Xbox and even Nintendo fans are doing the samething so why single out PS4 fan?

just saying.

BanBrother4048d ago

Correct. I use the Epic Forums (for Gears of War), also look at Major Nelson's Blog (for sales), Trueachievements.com and a couple other sites that are Xbox 360 oriented. I am seeing people saying they will jump ship next gen all the time, so the myth that "only N4G fanboys are bagging the nextBox hurrdurr" is false.

Many Xbox gamers across the globe are considerifng jumping ship, FACT. I use many PS3 and 360 related forums, and I tell it how it is. 360 gamers are finally fed-up and will jump ship if MS don't debunk some of these filthy rumours.
I myself will most likely not be getting one, and absolutely 0% be getting one if it requires always online. I mean it, 0% chance. My internet is capped atm and I can't barely load a webpage, nor hold a steady connection to my PS3 or Xbox.

extermin8or4047d ago

you mention you probably wont get one even if the internet isn't capped- so really you aren't basing your decision on rumours but on the fact that you like what you see elsewhere in terms of online and exclusives right? :p

Xbox Has Had More Studio Closures Than First Party Game Releases So Far In 2024

Hellblade 2, Indiana Jones, Avowed, Towerborne, and Call of Duty are still to be released this year. Marcus Fenix collection to be added to the list with the Xbox showcase, hopefully.

anast9h ago

Those are all coming to PS5 too.

"Xbox Has Had More Studio Closures Than First Party Game Releases So Far In 2024"

they kept the IPs though. they'll be making them under the MS brand i'm guessing. like minecraft all those years ago.

Kinda missing the forest for all the trees statement!

shinoff21836h ago(Edited 6h ago)

Bet all those don't make it though this year

romulus235h ago(Edited 5h ago)

If we're going to talk in "still to be's" there still could be more studio closures from Microsoft this year as well.

DOMination-2h ago

How much confidence do people have in these games being good though? I hope they will be (especially Avowed) but from what we know of them so far, it's hardly a guarantee, is it?

And even if they do turn out to be good, how much of that will be down to Xbox and its leadership? Most of these games were either sequels to games made before being acquired or started development before being acquired.

And just a note on Hellblade II - it is out in two weeks and unless I'm missing something, I don't see much in the way of previews or advertising from Microsoft. Not ideal for a niche game that looks like it probably cost a lot of money to make. It genuinely feels like another game being sent out to die and then have the studio shut down.

Elda1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

To me...Avowed graphics look cheap, the game looks generic as well as boring.

Let’s not pretend Sony is setting the world on fire with its first party either….it’s been crickets from them as well. In fact they even said not to expect any at all this year.
MS is a dumpster fire and Sony isn’t fighting anymore and it shows. I fail to see how this is a good thing.

Sonic18813h ago

I was actually thinking about that. You beat me to it

MrDead8h ago

So if MS hadn't spent $80 billion consolidating the industry just think of all the games and jobs that would have saved.

MS is a drain on gaming and have been nothing but a negative.

MrCrimson6h ago

not exactly like the studios were putting out good games anyway. Industry needs to restart from the ground up; if games like battlebit or manor lords can be made by teams with 10 people - then there's something fundamentally wrong with having 500 man teams put out glitchy overmonetized crap.

shinoff21836h ago

Interesting. Prey was a good game, evil within was dope, and hi fi was the best Xbox game that Xbox has had in so many years. That's according to the base.

romulus235h ago

HiFi Rush was a really good game actually so that's hardly the reason for shutting down Tango.

Microsoft Closes Redfall Developer Arkane Austin, Hi-Fi Rush Developer Tango Gameworks, and More

Microsoft has closed a number of Bethesda studios, including Redfall maker Arkane Austin, Hi-Fi Rush developer Tango Gameworks, and more in devastating cuts at Bethesda, IGN can confirm.

Moegooner1d 7h ago (Edited 1d 7h ago )

Hi-Fi Rush studio??? Seriously?? Goes to show quality matters lil to MS.

Worst gen ever. All big 3 battling are for who sucks the most. They just keep one upping one another.

-Foxtrot1d 6h ago

This does feel like a “quick Sony is getting shit on for Helldivers, let’s announce it now to minimise impact”

thesoftware7301d 6h ago

That is silly. Let's say there is some weird conspiracy. This announcement would effectively take ALL the attention away from the HD2 situation, especially since there is no longer an HD2 situation. I don't think anything will minimize this impact.

Tacoboto1d 6h ago

... so they announce it on a Tuesday? 36 hours after Sony cleared up everything?

You people care more about the next conspiracy than anything else.

Nevermind that Sony followed the golden rule of minimizing impact by announcing horrible news on a Friday.

Eonjay1d 6h ago

The constant weekly weird Sony drama is part of the industry's problem. Everyone else feels they can get away with murder. Also, what is the point of spending all that money if you just start shutting studios down. And... Redfall wasn't Arkane's fought. Microsoft new the shape the game was in but needed something for GamePass after a whole year of no releases into the service. Them taking it out on Arkane seems really disingenuous and distasteful. And WTF did Tango do? Didn't Todd just release a statement saying how he would never retire. Fire his ass.

romulus231d 6h ago

Well if that was the reason for the timing it didn't work.

darthv721d 5h ago

wow... i did not have them closing Tango and Arkane Austin on my bingo card.

Hofstaderman1d 5h ago (Edited 1d 5h ago )

Yes it does. Arkane Austin I can understand but Tango Gameworks made an excellent game in Hi Fi Rush.
On review, it want really all on Austin for Redfall and its failure, they were forced to make a multiplayer games when their expertise was always single player driven first person games.

-Foxtrot1d 5h ago

Guys I’m not being all that serious…relax

Outside_ofthe_Box1d 4h ago (Edited 1d 4h ago )

"I don't think anything will minimize this impact."

It already has. Notice your comment(or lack there of) vs HD2.

On another note, I would like to see Microsoft buy more studios and do more shadows drops on subscription services like they did Hi-Fi Rush. It's great for the industry I was told by people on here.

Zeref1d 3h ago (Edited 1d 3h ago )

I'm pretty sure that's exactly how it works. Same thing with layoffs. All of a sudden everyone has layoffs around the same time

Cacabunga1d 1h ago

peppeaccardo1d 1h ago

MS proving to the world that ttheir leadership cannot drive success from these new acquisitions. They have ran the numbers and they have realized that long term, without a clear direction from the motehrship, these are a loss for the company hence they need to be cut. I might be wrong but I am absolutelly sure that if these developers would have not been purchased by Microsoft they would be still on business. A shame ...

Einhander19721d 6h ago (Edited 1d 6h ago )

10/10 deflection, the ol' Sony too deflect...

Let's not discuss the fact that PlayStations struggles have largely been caused by the fact that game pass has reshaped how consumers spend causing them to spend less as they play what is on subscriptions and don't buy games as much because they either have become subscription gamers or they fear the game will come to a subscription so they don't buy things.

And it's not just PlayStation, the whole industry has been effected, many big studios are struggling across the board to match sales targets from pre-game pass releases which is especially apparent in things like sequels.

Heck the best example was Microsoft's own Starfield which should have easily blasted past 10m sales by the end of 2023 going by sales of similar Bethesda games yet was only able to achieve 3m which of course was almost entirely on Steam.

Moegooner1d 6h ago

Or maybe it's because Sony hasn't released multiple worthwhile SP games like they normally do each gen and the ones they did released actually sold well.

Layoffs aren't because studios are struggling, but because major publishers want to maximise profit gains.

Profchaos1d 6h ago (Edited 1d 6h ago )

Absolutely it's a service that's changed the way we view and consume games overall for the worse games have little value when they are part of a sub and become disposable doubly so if they are a day 1 freebie often it's the kiss of death for a game to be day 1 on gamepass as PlayStation players look at it like why do I have to pay 60 dollars for back 4 blood, payday 3 or outriders it'll be on PS plus soon enough and funny enough those games always fail to meet expectations sales are poor and longevity is poor.

When I see a game get a day 1 tag outside of first party my first thought is always something is wrong with it and it can't stand on its own feet so the publisher has made a deal to recoup development cost.

Even first party games have dropped in quality noticeably so since gamepass with gears 5 being the only good release I can think of since gamepass started

Petebloodyonion1d 5h ago

Wasn't aware that Gamepass is available on PlayStation.
Or are you telling us that a service from a console lacking in sales is so great that it affects the morale and buying habits of ppl lacking access to the service?

Also pretty sure that saying all of them competing for who sucks means the whole industry and not just Sony and MS.

Nitrowolf21d 6h ago (Edited 1d 6h ago )

This is what people online want. They just don't know or understand it. So many have warned about consolidation, and exactly what they have fear has been happening

This isn't the end, expect more bought out studios to be closed in the next few years

Hofstaderman1d 5h ago

Spot on. All in the name "growth" to appease investors and shareholders. Can't sustain the lie though...it will always implode as illustrated by these closures. Applies to MS and Embracer.

TiredGamer23h ago(Edited 23h ago)

This. ^

Publishers are slowly mitigating all development risk since every new big/medium budget game has become too big to fail. Games are too expensive to make and the profitability for titles rests on a hair’s edge. When you need to sell 5 million copies of a game to be profitable, you know that we’ve turned a new page in gaming. The real victims here are the smaller studios/games that bring so much character and variety to the industry, like with Hi-Fi Rush.

It looks to me that Hi-Fi Rush did not fulfill financial expectations for moving the GamePass needle, and the sales from the PlayStation port experiment did not measure up either. So it gets the boot.

Sad day and era for gaming.

notachance20h ago

yeah smaller ABK studios like Toys For Bob are now in dangers

notachance1d 5h ago

I just don’t know how the hell a company that can spend $67b to purchase a publisher decided that it’s okay to close the studio that produces their best game last year.

Whoever the higher up there that decides this is completely out of touch of how the game industry works, the damn xbox division as a whole would’ve been closed already if they weren’t sustained by other MS divisions.

shinoff21831d 5h ago

I got in an argument with someone on reddit and they weren't haven't that Xbox isn't propped up by other divisions argument. They swore up and down that Xbox was pulling its own weight. I just stopped after a couple back and forths

TiredGamer23h ago

Didn’t move the GamePass needle and the PlayStation port couldn’t save the return on investment….

dumahim1d 5h ago

So this is what happens when you're pleased with the sales and investing in the studio? Good guy Phil at it again.

Sonic18811d 4h ago (Edited 1d 4h ago )

From Aaron Greenburg:

"Hi-Fi RUSH was a break out hit for us and our players in all key measurements and expectations. We couldn’t be happier with what the team at Tango Gameworks delivered with this surprise release."

😂😂😂 🤥🤥

Lightning771d 4h ago (Edited 1d 4h ago )

Once again MS creates their own problems and they create their own animosity. Idc about their shitty excuse and "reasons" they're a incompetent company, plus all their Xbox fanboy influencers are dwindling I noticed. How many excuses can you make for a company like MS? Consoles are down and they're losing their own fanboy influencers also. That's all they had to cheer lead them now they're leaving them. Pretty nobody will be on MS dude no matter if they (if they ever but I doubt it) get their act together.

Trashy ass ppl and company....

If they go under eventual it's because of their own doing nobody else's.

porkChop1d 1h ago

Yeah overall this gen is pretty shit. Everyone is making horrible decisions, great devs are getting either gutted or entirely shut down regardless of quality or success, very little in the way of innovative games, etc. This industry needs to see some drastic changes.

badz14915h ago

where are all the cheerleaders for MS acquisitions amid all these?? you guys happy now? this will not be the end of it, maybe just the beginning!

OptimusDK6h ago

Maybe it has to do with this:
Hinji Mikami is leaving Tango Gameworks in the coming months. On February 23 it was reported that Mikami would be departing Tango Gameworks. Bethesda has stepped in to confirm the report of Mikami's forthcoming departure from the studio he founded over a decade ago.

Mikami originally founded Tango Gameworks in 2010 after departing Capcom, having lead the development of iconic games like Resident Evil and Resident Evil 4.

MS don't care about the studios, they want the IP's. They'll keep the big ones in house, the game engines they run on and licence the rest. Stacks of cash to be made from licensing IP's ...or just sit on them so no one else can use them.

Well xbox fans you got what you asked for... and honestly deserved...

It was so easily predictable that game pass was never going to be able to support all these studios.

If Microsoft can't win they are going to burn it all to the ground...

Countdown to Phil Spencer telling us "it's better for the gamers this way" yet again.

Barlos1d 5h ago

Agree but gamers didn't ask for people to be out of work.

VenomUK1d 4h ago (Edited 1d 4h ago )

@Barlos They indirectly did. Every person who made a wish list of who Microsoft should buy next and were sending tweets to Phil Spencer and Xbox with proposed studios, played a part.

The saddest part is the studios were closed because of the underperformance of their last games, and if they had been given a chance then their next games could’ve been great and succeeded. But it is the same old Phil Spencer Microsoft problem which is not giving them a chance, and that’s why he is not able to manage game studios.

VariantAEC1d 4h ago

Yeah they did. Just because they refused to see what everyone with a brain was telling them doesn't mean they didn't know. They were told, they should've put up a fight and they didn't. This is the result. But who knows even if MS' fans weren't such boot-lickers, MS could've carried this out against their fans wishes anyway. Unfortunately, we have the hardcore MS defense bots running to deflect from any bad news and maybe, just maybe, MS felt empowered to do more damage as a result of their fans cheering this all on.

anast1d 3h ago

They sold themselves out. Once people buy you they can do what they want. None of this should have been a surprise. When companies get bought out, they eventually get dismantled.

shinoff21831d 5h ago

Xbox fans were to busy daydreaming of Ms curbstopping Sony they didn't look at the big picture.

Einhander19721d 5h ago

Not disagreeing at all.

I want to add that from the day Microsoft announced game pass, before they even started buying up studios it was obvious that game pass wasn't going to be able to support itself.

It was so dumb that they doubled down on it by spending 100B on a service they knew only existed through subsidization.

They should have realized there was no way that adding massively more costs on a subscription they were subsidizing was certain to fail. Especially after seeing how it had devastated sales across the platform as a whole.

Heck by the time this generation started during covid when the console sales were similar PlayStation was already outselling xbox on multiplatform games 8:1 yet they still doubled down on it.

1d 5h ago
Relientk771d 7h ago

This is beyond wrong. Like wtf!? Especially Tango Gameworks with Hi-Fi Rush. I've heard nothing but good things about that game. Just because Arkane Austin screwed up one game release doesn't mean you need to close them. It sounds like they were forced to do a multiplayer game when they're a single player studio. They could have made a Prey 2 or some other game next.

Just wow awful news.

Einhander19721d 6h ago

Apparently PlayStation owners didn't buy enough copies of Hi-Fi Rush...

romulus231d 6h ago

"Xbox says Hi-Fi Rush was a success "in all key measurements" amid rumors of poor sales. Following rumors that Tango Gameworks' Hi-Fish Rush didn't meet sales expectations, Xbox marketing VP Aaron Greenburg is defending the "break out hit" as a success by all metrics."

According to Aaron Greenburg it was a success so they shouldn't have even needed PlayStation owners to buy it. That being said, I bought it and really enjoyed it, it's a great game. Shame MS closed them down.

RpgSama1d 6h ago

@Romulus23

All lies by the Green Bug, that just means that a lot of people fired bullets or whatever in the game, that's the key measurements they care to share.

Tango did NOT deserve to be closed down, they have not released a single bad game.

Crows901d 6h ago

That's usually what happens when you don't release it at the same time as other platforms....same thing happened with tomb raider reboot sequel. MS got exclusivity for a year and then when it came to PlayStation it barely sold. Nobody cared anymore.

shinoff21831d 5h ago

Still waiting on the physical release pre order window

VariantAEC1d 4h ago

Well... I did my part. Hi-Fi Rush is a good game, but I don't think its MS' style. We don't really know how well it did or didn't perform by the numbers or whether it broke even. This could just be another MS blunder.

Elda1d 3h ago

Exactly. MS purchasing a 3rd party studio & keeping games off of other platforms probably hurt them in the long run, then finally putting Hi Fi Rush on PS which in turn PS fans probably didn't care to buy & support Hi Fi Rush after a year later of release. Hi Fi Rush was released on Gamepass so it probably never really made any money selling solely.

Eonjay1d 2h ago

@romulus23

Let's hope it didn't sell well because that would make this worse. Also I could have sworn I read an article about their next game in the works.

Seraphim1d ago (Edited 1d ago )

I was wondering if that played any part considering the timing, though, XB claimed the game to be a success last year only on XB & PC. Regardless MS f'd up there too. They shadow dropped HiFi on XB/PC last year at the perfect time. This year when they released on PS not only had the hype died, but there were so many solid games available the first 3 months of this year to play.

I almost bought it on PC last year, but now that it dropped on PS I just have far too many games to play to bother...

If MS needs PS and even Switch sales they need a better strategy. At the very least a release date where players are more inticed to buy said game. The problem is always going to be that if they want exclusives the hype for these games will be dead a year later. The exceptions might be some of their heavy hitters.... 2 cents

Angyobangyo11h ago(Edited 11h ago)

PS and PC owners probably bought more copies that Xbox owners.

I can only imagine the little amount of revenue both games generated, sent straight to gamepass and excluded from the largest current gen console userbase. Not to say both games would have done well if they were on PS5 too, but you heavily damage to a games revenue when you put it on a stagnating sub service for a poorly selling console, can't really see people going out in droves to sub to GP to play this.

shinoff21831d 5h ago

Gamepass subs(most of Xbox players) don't buy games all like that so it's not sustainable. It's reality.

RaidenBlack1d 6h ago

Yea Austin made one of the most creative game of last gen with Prey and were forced to take risk with Redfall and now the whole studio is being closed.

Aphrodia1d 6h ago

Yes, that Tango gameworks/ Hi-Fi closure was an eye opener for me as well. Neither played it nor was interested in it myself but all I heard was everyone acting like it was the second coming of guitar hero or something.

I don't know what else to say other than modern gaming is an overwhelming sea of mediocrity and there's not enough voices of reason speaking up and saying that most games made these days are just not very good.

shinoff21831d 5h ago

Your playing the wrong games then. There's always been shovelware type games. Going back to wii, snes, nes, ps1 Xbox og. That's a bs blanket statement. As an older gamer since atari days I'd personally say this is a great time. If you can't find anything to play. That's on you

With all that said in no way or form am I speaking of multi-player games, gacha, or whatever. I'm strictly speaking on single player games.

Aphrodia1d 3h ago

So Xbox bought studios to keep games off other platforms and forgot they conditioned Xbox customers to not buy games. Whoops.

So anyone else think Outer World's 2 dies 🤔? I'm thinking a small game losing out on Nintendo and Playstation gamers buying will kill this IP. But it's okay Xbox fans can get more COD! Halo, Gears and Forza! Woot that's a 'win'. Yay Gamepass FTW

Tango did NOT deserve to be closed down, they have not released a single bad game, and I'm sure Arkhane failed just because they were both rushed and pressured into making a GaaS game they had no experience in doing and no support to get it completed out of the gate.

PrinceOfAnger1d 6h ago

Not a big deal only hi fi rush was good

Sony has closed
Manchester studio
Japan studio
Pixel opus
London studio
Ready At Dawn ...

RupeeHoarder1d 6h ago

The difference being Sony has a large group of other studios that have done something positive. Microsoft just closed the studio to the only good game they released in the past year (Hi-Fi Rush).

CrashMania1d 6h ago

They all suck as well of course. But MS spent 10s of billions on these publishers for mass consolidation, every made a song and dance about how MS would save them, using their endless Windows, 365 and Azure money to keep them open forever and how Phil was some hero.

Nothing is safe unless it makes money, even for MS.

romulus231d 6h ago

It is a big deal.

Microsoft has closed
Fasa Studios
Digital Anvil
Ensemble
Lionhead Studios
Press Play
Arkane Austin
Tango Gameworks

Einhander19721d 6h ago (Edited 1d 6h ago )

Wow how far back do you want to go back.

Lionhead Studios
Aces Game Studio
BigPark
Carbonated Game
Digital Anvil
Ensemble Studios
FASA Studio
Good Science Studio
Hired Gun
Microsoft Studios Japan
Microsoft Studios Victoria
Team Dakota
Xbox Entertainment Studios
Xbox Live Productions
Lift London
Access Software
Salt Lake Games Studio
Twisted Pixel Games
WingNut Interactive

And more before this, this was just their cuts during xbone era that Phil cut while he was at the head.

And some of those PlayStation studios were merged not closed, most of the UK studios were folded into each other.

Japan Studio was renamed to Asobi not closed, aAsobi was an internal team of Japan Studio the "closure" the press misinformed people about was more or less a name change, the studio is in the same building and when the change happened less than 5 people mostly leadership positions chose to leave the studio to form Bokeh Studio, which still works closely with Sony.

And even if your deflection stood on it's own, Microsoft spent 3 Billion 3 years ago almost to the date to buy Zenimax and has already closed 2 of it's biggest studios and decimated Zenimax's support studio structure.

It's no wonder Todd Howard was talking about "more frequent releases" and letting other studios make their IP's games. The days of big budget huge Bethesda games is over...

In fact sadly Microsoft has ushered in the end of big budget gaming as we know it with their obviously unsustainable subscription industry change.

And I feel fully confident that this isn't the end of studio closures from these recently purchased studios.

Abnor_Mal1d 6h ago

Ready At Dawn was never a Sony owned studio, and only made a few smaller God of War games and a Jax and Daxter spin off, and of course The Order1866.

They are currently owned by OcUlus Studios.

MrDead1d 6h ago

How many times has MS fired Bethesda staff since they purchased it? I think it's been three rounds so far

BehindTheRows1d 5h ago

Deflection is the finest form of delusion.

shinoff21831d 5h ago

London studio what have they made recently. Really the worst one was Japan studio. That sucked.

In reality though your deflecting. The fact of the matter is Ms just closed the studio that made their highest rated game in years. That's insane.

Hofstaderman1d 5h ago

Also many of those staff were absorbed into other studios.

VariantAEC1d 4h ago (Edited 1d 4h ago )

Ready At Dawn was never a PS first party studio.
Manchester was closed and it was proposed that London should be closed, but their website is still up with no news about it being closed on their official site anywhere. So it's possible that the proposed closure just did not happen to get fufilled. Meaning London Studio *MIGHT* still be open running lean.

Edit: Japan Studio was closed with some staff making up the new Asobi Team Studio who's first title was the PS5 pack-in game "Astro's Playroom." Pixel Opus was closed and not replaced or spun-off their only games were Entwined and Concrete Genie they also helped publish Journey according to Wikipedia.

Chevalier18h ago

Phil needs to step down. What kind of usual spin do you want?

More and more people lose jobs but the people at the top stay the same. Hardware sales tank despite billions and billions spent. The math is plain and simple.

Sonic18811d 5h ago (Edited 1d 5h ago )

I'm still trying to figure out what was the real reason to acquire Bethesda for millions or Billions of dollars if you're closing down studios 🤔 What were their true intentions 🤔 I mean do Microsoft really want to be a third-party publisher? It sounds like they're confused.with their future in gaming

VariantAEC1d 3h ago

@Sonic1881
To rape each studio for their sweet succulent ultra-valuable IP. This is Microsoft's favorite past-time.

A new survey from Microsoft has further hinted at the possibility of an Xbox handheld being in development.

This is definitely happening, I just hope they have 2 versions one with a much bigger screen.

GamerRN7d ago

I'll be happy with this, and a PC console hybrid that rivals anything we have power wise

Number1TailzFan7d ago

The problem with bigger devices is playing them on your side in bed, Vita and before that was fine. Since the Switch you gotta have a gooseneck holder & controllers detached so you can lie down holding them, or your arm will quickly get tired.

1Victor7d ago

@thesofware: “A much bigger screen than what?”
A gaming laptop 🤷🏿🤣

Kosic7d ago

Than the screen originally planned...duh... :D

darthv727d ago

it kinda already did... https://www.xbox.com/en-US/...

They are just gauging interest in one of their own.

crazyCoconuts7d ago

A Xbox version of Logitech G-Cloud?
I mean, why bother? Not like the G cloud is flying off shelves and what would Xbox add to make it better?
They're surely not going to create bespoke architecture here and there are already a few Windows handhelds out there. I have little confidence in their ability to put together an attractive UI in the way Steam did. So I doubt anything will come from this.

KicksnSnares8d ago

Day One buy for me if they'll make a dedicated handheld device.

darthv727d ago

i have that logitech g-cloud. Its a sweet little piece of kit. I like that it can also install games from the play store unlike the other android based handheld.

mudakoshaka7d ago

It sure is! Don't understand why you get the down-votes. Whoever does not like the G Cloud must have been dropped down a well, head first, when they were of a younger age.

PassNextquestion7d ago

I wonder if Microsoft will perform better in Japan if they do actually make a handheld since everyone says handheld and mobile are king over there.

TiredGamer7d ago

This looks like the future of the game industry... all three platforms with a handheld option.

I wonder if the Playstation Portal is a technology test-bed/prototype for a future Playstation handheld?

rlow17d ago (Edited 7d ago )

It’s a possibility but I can’t help but think would that be the best way to go about it? Though it would give you data on how much it is used and game type. It’s still not a true portable device and so people approach it differently. I think that data on phones, tablets, and of course the competition would give a better indication.

But I really think if Sony is considering a new PSP that could play ps5 games, now would be the time to dive in. Honestly, if they do this, it would be huge.

Traecy7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

Doubt if Sony PS wants to support a new handheld with first party games. Something they lacked with the Vita. What they should do is have a handheld that is like the PS Portal which can play all games but play those games on the go as well as at home. Something like that is a better investment.

TiredGamer7d ago

Agreed that you will probably never see a separate line of games specifically for the handheld (a la PSP or PSVita). The modern economics and expectations of game development make that cost prohibitive. What makes more sense is if the full-fat game on PS5 or PS6 has a special "handheld" profile that is automatically optimized for the lower spec handheld. There would be some significant compromises compared to the bigger console variant, but it would be the same game overall and would only require a single purchase.... somewhat what the Switch does with a lower resolution when playing handheld versus docked.
