How Microsoft Can Top the PlayStation Conference

The PlayStation 4 reveal yesterday was impressive and threw down a gauntlet. How can Microsoft steal the show from Sony?

DaThreats4095d ago (Edited 4095d ago )

1. Dont focus on Kinect crap

2. Give exclusives besides Halo, Forza, Alan Wake, and Fable.

3. Match power or higher of PS4

4. Give low price point

5. Not show Next Xbox is just a fancy cable box

6. Playing online free

7. Able to play used games and not always having to be on internet

Dante1124095d ago

By making Live free. If they don't I'm not buying their next gen console.

LOGICWINS4095d ago

Not making Live free this gen would be the dumbest move.

-Alpha4095d ago (Edited 4095d ago )

Microsoft wont abandon the profits. If they can keep their brand perception ahead, then they can continue getting away with charging for LIVE. I am expecting some solid OS features and app partnerships that can take MS a long way when it comes to being a family-oriented entertainment hub. If they can make those new consumers pay for an XBL subscription, then there wont be a necessity to go free to access LIVE.

Skips4095d ago (Edited 4095d ago )

Agreed, if PSN is free. (Basic online MP) while XBL is not, while also having to keep paying to have access to Netflix, Hulu, etc. (Things you've already payed for). Wouldn't want a 720 either.

Also hope Microsoft doesn't focus on Kinect TOO much this time. : /

Enemy4095d ago (Edited 4095d ago )

- They will focus on Kinect crap. "Better with Kinect" has become their thing now. If they stop, how will Kinect sell?

- Most of their 1st party studios are developing Kinect titles. They're small teams, 343i and Turn 10 excluded. Chances of seeing a new hardcore IP are low, unless you're expecting a 3rd party timed exclusive. 343i are working on the next Halo, Turn 10 the next Forza

- Matching or surpassing the power of the PS4 is very important, agreed

- Define low. I doubt the PS4 or next Xbox will be under $450

- Expansion of Xbox Live services are a given. Xbox Live will not go free

- Playing online for free should be their main focus. PSN does it, why can't Microsoft?

- I don't think they'll block used games. If they do, they might as well throw in the towel now

You forgot two more things, though. RROD and blu-ray.

Overall, there's a lot of pressure for Microsoft here.

DigitalRaptor4095d ago (Edited 4095d ago )

The way i see it, Microsoft got away with charging for P2P with the original Xbox because it was seen as a worthy service because it was unmatched on consoles .. YET, it was still P2P,charging for which is insulting. And since Xbox popularly boomed this gen, people turned a blind eye to the fact that you're forced to pay for basic online connectivity.

So if consumers are smart and see Sony's approach to the 'Freemium' model, i honestly don't see Microsoft getting away with it for much longer. Facing the pretty much inevitable, Sony and MS' services will be in the same ballpark next gen, so forcing you for what is basic entry to the multiplayer sections of games you've already paid full asking price for is going to push people further away from MS, especially since Sony and their games are no longer looking to be the industry's whipping boy.

Consumer standards should've been all over MS as soon as they charged you to access FREE apps every year.

darthv724095d ago

if they have to "top" sony as much as they want to hit parity with them.

I mean last gen the 360 and ps3 were more alike than different. It seems this gen they could be even closer in terms of specs.

if that's true, there would be pretty much no difference in a game for ps4 as it would be on 720. unless of course, that game is exclusive or offers something to differentiate it from the other.

Ms will more than likely be more focused on the entertainment aspect. We all assume sony is their biggest rival when it comes to gaming but Apple seems more of a serious threat when it comes to other entertainment aspects.

So while i await some hard facts about what the nextbox can do for gaming, i am also eagerly awaiting to see how they take on Apple and the new generation of smart devices that are more prevalent in our everyday lives.

Oh and making online free....yeah that would be a good move but dont give up on the members who have been loyal for so long. they have to build more trust with content partners to deliver the goods that are WORTH paying for not just the fact that we are paying for them.

Godz Kastro4095d ago

Dude, get a $40 live card from amazon and call it a year. Seriously? .11 cents a day is that hard to come by? Make no mistake, ps owners dont have the same level of service for online games with their free svc.

Boody-Bandit4095d ago

I wish MS would make XBL free but I think most of us don't see that happening. It's just too much of a cash cow for them.

Other than that I would like to see some new IPs from MS. They came out of the gate on fire with the 360 and then dwindled into relying heavily on 4 franchise titles, multiplats and Kinect.

I guess we will have to wait until E3 to find out. This should be one hell of an E3. Sony set the bar high and you know MS doesn't want to lose their foothold in North America. Should be very interesting.

One thing is for sure, Sony has my attention. Let's see if MS can match or surpass them. Either way I'm getting both day one.

Peppino74095d ago

Regardless of what they announce... it's gonna be a tough one. Gonna be another great console war.

EVILDEAD3604095d ago (Edited 4095d ago )

Although, Sony didn't go for the jugular they definately made the case for the PS4. In my opinion, they unintentionally made the case that the PS3 might be a little stronger games wise than the PS4 is early on.

MS definately is in the same position it always was, they need to deliver.

- The rumor is that Sony's online structure won't be free. Regardless, MS just simply needs to keep the focusing on strengthening Live's content and capabilities, all the while selling the gamer on why Live is still where 20 million will want to game daily.

- Adding Blu-Ray is huge for MS, but if the 720 is BC compatible the system has a one-up on Sony.

- Over 20 first party devs are making next gen games for MS, not including partnerships with Crytek and Epic. So don't just worry about simpy releasing New IPs, make GREAT NEW IPS that can stand toe to toe with the big dogs. Not one new Sony new IP could touch Killzone 4. The Wii-U is in peril not because of New IPs like Zombie-U, it's because they need the first party staples that Nintendo fans love in the roster to sell systems.

- Don't listen to the haters of Kinect. Sony didn't include a camera for nothing. We just watch Sony's most creative developer demonstrate a casual MOVE game as their next project. Show off Kinect 2.0 and the Wii-U audience and the gamers who bought the original Kinect will still be onboard. Especially if those big Kinect games like the K. Sports and DCs are backwards compatible.

- Launch a seperate show like Sony did, much closer or prior to E3 and announce the sysyem and gain 2 extra hours of coverage for the new sysyem as Sony wisely did.

At the end of the day, even with the great position the current gen Xbox has put MS in, they need to double down and even work harder this coming gen because Sony is going all in.

Evil

zeal0us4095d ago (Edited 4095d ago )

What they should do as far Xbox live silver and gold goes.

XBLS should include
-free online gaming or have a buy once play online forever option, if they really want $$$ that bad).
-Free browers, twitter, facebook and etc with ads(not the kind that interrupts you)
-If I got account with any video service like Netflix, Hulu or etc I can just use that account to login and watch without the need XBLG.

XBLG still $60 but it will get
-free online video service(Hulu,Netflix, Crackle or etc) no account needed. Meaning you could acess these service without the actual need of an account.
-Discount on DLC and other products
-Early Access to demos, dlc and etc
-No ads with services like Facebook, twitter and etc

negative4095d ago

Cheap bastard. You get what you pay for!

gaffyh4095d ago

@Logic - Why? MS has millions of subscribers that are willing to pay for online play, and it will not get rid of it until it is substantially losing to Sony.

@DaThreats -

1. No chance, will definitely be mentioned.

2. Gears possibly, and they will most likely have new IP.

3. Won't match it. It will be weaker according to the rumored specs, which it turns out were almost exact for PS4. So expect the same for 720. I can only think that MS might increase RAM more from 8GB.

4. Very likely.

5. Will be the same as 360, with a few more partners on board. This stuff might possibly be free rather than part of XBLG.

6. Not going to happen.

7. This rumor seems very dodgy. If it was true, MS is probably doing a U-Turn right now.

Gildarts4095d ago

blackbeld4095d ago

Yep,

Making Live for free and a lot of AAA exclusive games.

And please not again Gears, Halo and Forza but new IP's we need.

MikeMyers4095d ago

The first comment brought some good points. With that said Microsoft can still top the PS4 no matter how many doubters disagree. I personally don't think they will but I'm not ruling it out.

AngelicIceDiamond4095d ago (Edited 4095d ago )

MS can afford to give MP away for free come next gen. Sony will have paid subscriptions but will keep the core of the system free which includes free MP as well as other features.

The new social features look crazy on PS4. And I'm sure next gen Xbox Live will be insane as well, but I believe MP won't be in the "gold" package come next gen no way.

MS has caught a glimpse of what PS4 will be able to do. Something like MP now is nothing, feesable and basic feature that everyone wants out of the box and I'm sure MS now knows this now.

Halo, Forza Fable (Kinect) released last year I also read somewhere Fable will make 2014 debut. GOW releases soon. So, what does that leave MS when it comes to hardcore games?

Lets see... Black Tusks New AAA "next big thing" Ip.Alan Wake 2, Ryse, PGR, Ruffians new Ip, Killer Instinct, Rares new project, plus 2 or however many more possible Ip's.

Whats also interesting is The lead designer of Ruffian games says he has 4 unannounced Ips? "Including a “third person action title” and a “multiplayer game” with mentions of CryEngine 3.

If not those then what? MS always releases AAA games even if they are Halo and Gears they always deliver something for the hardcore gamers.

TheGamerDood4095d ago

"Match power or higher of PS4"

"Free online"

"Used games, always on"

lol I'm sorry but that's just not going to happen.

WeAreLegion4095d ago

Actually, the current Lionhead did not make Black & White 1/2, The Movies, or Fable. The talent at Lionhead that made THOSE games left to form Media Molecule.

They were the guys who showed us 3D modelling in real-time last night without the need for actual clay. Remember? Then, they created a story with motion and facial expression. Innovation incarnate.

Bobby Kotex4095d ago

The only reason Microsoft is charging is because they can. I seriously doubt they will make it free. And guess what? Tons of people will pay for it.

Eyeco4095d ago

Are Ton's of people really gonna be ok paying for something that the competiton (PS4/SB) offers for free that's just as good if not better ?

fixed.

blackstrr4114095d ago

Sony demoed killzone and infamous. No new ip. What's wrong with u people. If xbox demo halo and gears people willstart saying same ol same ol. Don't get me wrong. I loved the conference. I'm buying the next ps def but u people shud be honest for once

Dante1124095d ago

@ blackstrr

That's funny. I thought Deep down, Drive Club, Knack, The Witness and an untitled MM were new ips? And I'm sure we'll see more new ips come E3 as well.

Enemy4095d ago

@ blackstrr411: You just got owned pretty honestly, actually.

capnjoe2174095d ago

@blackstrr411 So did you sleep through presentations for Knack, Drive Club, probable timed exclusives like The Witness, Deep Down? Granted we're not sure of the ultimate future of exclusivity regarding these titles but you can't act like there wasn't anything new.

I'll pass on Alan wake and Fable..Halo looks like it has nothing on Destiny either, but Forza is always welcome.

Kinect 2.0 should be an after thought

$ 400-450 ( People pay that for phones and tablets, they will pay it for a next gen system )

Games Games Games......but mostly new IP's.

Sony introduced a decent amount of new games and Microsoft needs the same. But stuff we haven't seen yet.

Dilldo_4095d ago

2. Give exclusives besides Halo, Forza, Alan Wake, and Fable.

LOLWUT did Sony announce any new IP's besides that weird platforming game?
Why does Microsoft need to do that?

Rainstorm814095d ago

Sony flooded this gen with new IPs, why wouldn't they do the same next gen?

They have 4 new exclusive iPs releasing on the PS3 this year Alone, and PS4 launches this year...

zebramocha4095d ago (Edited 4095d ago )

@dill yeah, the mm game, witness and not counting the new ip coming out on the ps3,rain,puppeteer,tlou,beyond two souls and the racing game by evolution.

Chaostar4095d ago (Edited 4095d ago )

Deep down, Drive Club, Knack, The Witness and an untitled MM game; that's 5 new IPs before E3. I would like MS to at least match that.

T24095d ago

Becuz Sony will still be announcing at E3 which leave ms two conferences behind unless they make up ground

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 4095d ago
Captain Qwark 94095d ago

1. agreed, no kinect crap

2. show those titles but also add in a true banjo sequel, killer instinct, conker, lost Odyssey, etc actually do something with the great ips you never gave a chance too. then toss in a few new ones

3. beat it, whoever goes first gets a pass in my book. if your second to reveal then you should have to beat the competition

4. 350-500 is a sweet spot depending upon whats offered. different sku's with multiple size hdds and finishes is fine but DO NOT go the route of not including an hdd in every console. that was retarded

5. not even sure what you mean by that so ill skip it

6. would be nice but not needed. thats a solid stream of revenue which can be used to continuously update and monitor the service. im good with it but it needs to offer more value similar to playstation plus. i tolerate it now because im invested in the xbox. once the new gen starts that wont be the case and ill need more to justify it

7. huuuuuuuuugely agree

***8. backwards compatibility would be an excellent feature and give you something over ps

***9. may need to reinvent the controller completely. perhaps even using something like the wii remote in addition to a built in kinect to allow users traditional play mixed with motions and voice. the tablet/touchscreen is cool but its now being used by both wii u and ps4 so the need something different, much different

Megaton4095d ago

Yep. It'll take all 7 of those things. Hell, I have Alan Wake and Fable on my PC. They need to really dig deep with new core IPs.

Blackdeath_6634095d ago (Edited 4095d ago )

good list but unfortunately all the reports and rumours are leading to the exact opposite of those points. kinect 2.0 is supposedly shipping with every xbox which indicates a focus on kinect and the always online/always connected to kinect are very worrying indeed. i find it really hard to see microsoft moving away from that after putting so much emphasis on the kinect. also paying just to be able to play online and paying to use features that i already pay for like paying for the ability to use netflix is an absolute no no for me.
always online, always connected to kinect, and paying for xboxlive are features that completely eradicate any possibility of buying an xbox from my mind. and even if those feature don't exist they then have to convince me that they have a stronger exclusives library and that they have a stronger console both of which are unlikely. after getting a pc it looks like i'm going ps4

Jockamo4095d ago

kinect was essentially a prototype released to market. if they can fix all the problems w/ the tech and have software that utilizes it well, then i think it would be a welcomed addition to the next generation.

i know it's a lofty idea, but occulus rift integration at launch would be killer

firelogic4095d ago (Edited 4095d ago )

Good luck with matching or surpassing hw. so far the rumours have been spot-on which means the next xbox will be running a lower grade cpu, lower grade gpu, and 4GB of ddr3 ram.

They're going to need to focus on other features, which is going to be a tough battle because Sony hit it out of the park with Gaikai.

And if by some idiotic reason, the always online drm is true, MS might as well just not release the next console.

And enough with your wishful thinking. Xbox Live is not going to be free. MS makes a ridiculous amount of profit off of it.

otherZinc4095d ago

1.Kinect is better than Move and waaaaaay more successful!

2.SONY announced Killzone & Infamous...not a money maker like Halo...

3.SONY wont be free either...

Karpetburnz4095d ago

If Sony does charge a fee to go online with the PS4, then we will truely "get what we pay for".

Just_The_Truth4095d ago

1. Kinect is not better than move. There hasn't been one game that's worked really well and made people go WOW this amazing. On the other hand games like KZ3, infamous 2, sly cooper collection etc. are fully workable with move. I don't care about motion controls but buttons beat none.

2. That just your opinion. I doubt you've even played KZ or any other big playstation games. Plus how many games did the Xbox announce yesterday....it's funny because they have 4 main games Halo, Gears, forza, and fable. Bungle left halo. Cliff left epic. Forza's not at bad racing game but nothing compared to GT and fable...enough said.

3. Sony will be free with an optional premium service.

Eyeco4095d ago

If Sony does charge for the online it will most likely be for the streaming/broadcasting/cloud features and that will probably come with PS+, I'm sure the core online gameplay will be free

joab7774095d ago

It wont be free and neither will the ps4. But sony was smart integrating psplus because gamers wont mind parting with money, even if its mandatory, if they know they will be getting alot in return.

I love both sony and microsoft for different reasons. I love the overall xbox experience and i used to love it for its games but sony has a chokehold on that right now. I understand that microsoft is using its xbox division to keep its chokehold on the OS. They know that momentum is shifting towards mobile and living room experience so they created an OS with win 8 to move in that direction. They want to be the pc in your living room.

This is the MOST IMPORTANT thing from last night. The destiny reveal. In the past, microsoft had timed exclusivity with activision and others because it benefited them. Xbox was king console. Did activision pick sony as the better console last night? If companies begin throwing their hats in with it will hurt alot because microsoft has used this in the past couple yrs to ride out this gen. This could be a disturbing trend.

On the flipside, the cable thing may not be so bad. What if microsoft sold their next xbox for $99 or $199 with subscription fee. It works for phones and could get the 720 in everyones household very early on. xbox 360 was known as the affordable console last gen (which is debatable once u pay for everything) but if tbey could do it again, it could be life or death.

theDECAY4095d ago

Most people have enough of those subscription based platforms already. I don't see many casuals trading those for what they believe to be a video game console.

Animal Mutha 764095d ago

@ DaThreats

Agree with most of that but I dont think you will get a free online as MS have proved that millions will pay for it = steady revenue stream.

I would love to be able to install my 360 copy of BF3 and then play it at a much higher render resolution and 60fps.

ALLWRONG4095d ago (Edited 4095d ago )

When it comes to Live there is nothing wrong with paying for superior quality. Think T-Bone steak vs Hamburger. As for exclusives MS didn't too bad this gen considering they have more than Sony.

saint_seya4094d ago

Your name describes your comment ;)

kenshiro1004094d ago

Wikipedia isn't a reliable source so...yeah.

user39158004095d ago

Nope, online will be there and we will get charged. MS wants to win sonys conferenced? Really? I consider their reveal awfull, the worst in history, reveal without the actual console lol,,, Only good thing was third party games, same old horrible remote.

Sony had good spec the 8 core and 8gb ddr5 was awesome, but let us down with what we wanted to see the actual console, without it its not a reveal jeez.

If ms wants to win, then just show the console ugly or not its a reveal lol...

Its going to be hard for ms to catch up to those specs, sony was indeed impresive. We might not see another console for another 8 to 10 years, it might be the last console we ever see. 8GB of ram its enough but ddr5 its an overkill, thats about 16 gb ddr3. Sony has a beast on their hand for sure on par to high end pc. MS wont hold back and I believe their offering will be better, but the power of PS4 its insane.

Make MS better?
1) BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE and use game a most
2) 2 models for online, gold free able to play, share, download. 2nd model 50 dollars with skype, multiple downloads/programing/video sharing/multiple tv play from same console.
3}First party games, give us moreeeeeeeeeee
4} Illumiroom
5}MMOS
6} BLU RAY and great spec for hardware
7} more apps and entertainment
8} console sharing with ms products, optional keyboard wireless solution for windows 8 on 720.
9} let us get achievements on same console with multiple players.

I only see the wiiu been hurt and third party leaving the console in droves, well its already happening.

Karpetburnz4095d ago

Showing the console itself isnt as important as showing what it offers, and I assume Sony want to wait until E3 to show the actual hardware.

Diddnt you see the new controller? It has many changes and new features. It's handles are longer and bulkier to fit the hands better, The analog sticks are now concave and the triggers are now convex. IMO they nailed the controller.

JimmyDanger4095d ago

9} let us get achievements on same console with multiple players.

It's been able to do that since day one.

asmith23064095d ago

1. Not gonna happen

2. Maybe but their internal studios aren't up to much and after seeing the PS4 I don't know what 3rd party would support them exclusively.

3. I would be shocked if it does. It will come close but alot of RAM will be dedicated to OS and apps, and possibly Kinect.

4. More likely to be lower than the PS4s price point anyway.

5. Lol, it probably will be!

6. Not gonna happen, the amount of cash they get off Live isn't worth dropping it unless it is a complete overhaul of Live and what it offers. PS+ got in their first in terms of the best online subscription offering in my opinion.

7. We shall see.

The thing about the Xbox is that we haven't heard ANYTHING exciting about it in a long, long time. No leaks, speculation, nothing. It's not a good sign in my opinion.

DFresh4095d ago

Reality:
1.) Kinect 2.0 is rumored in development for Xbox 720.

2.) That's still a mystery.

3.) I don't think it'll be that much more powerful. After all M$ are a software company not a hardware company.

4.) I think it'll be in the same price range of PS4. $400-$500 (Price Range.)

5.) All platforms are going in this direction whether we like it or not.

6.) I wish. >.<

7.) None of the platform holders are stupid enough to actually go through with it.

"HOW MICROSOFT CAN TOP THE PLAYSTATION CONFERENCE"

bring more than just A' game

DarthJay4094d ago

You mean like how Sony showed off another Killzone, another Infamous and another racing game? Come on now...

DigitalSmoke4094d ago

So basically copy Playstation, nice one.

StraightPath4094d ago (Edited 4094d ago )

wait cant someone just say give exclusives besides killzone or infamous...works the same way.

Microsoft has been severly lacking in the exclusives departments. I hope they not only bring new IPs but also the usual handful of exclusives they have. They also need to atleast match the powerful specs of the PS4 or even top it. Did anyone see the outstanding graphics of Killzone Shadowfall damn....

Even though some games were multiplatform in the show such as Watchdogs and Destiny but having Bungie in a Sony show was a big slap to Microsoft. Also having all these amazing multiplaforms demoed in Sonys show such as Watchdogs.

Microsoft Ideal show to beat Sony

Halo 5
Next Gen Gears Of War
Alan Wake 2
Forza 5
Forza Horizon 2
Rare IPs finally taken seriously ( Banjo Kazooie , Conker , Perfect Dark )
Kameo 2
Project Gotham 5
Crackdown 3
Fable

is some of the exclusives they can bring to the table. As for multiplatforms games they should steal

Hideo Kojima to show MGS Ground Zeroes / Phantom Pain in MS Sony ( he came before on MS shows and sony hosted with bungie so this would hurt sony kojima unvieling next gen msg on ms show..)

Square Enix to announce FF game in MS Sony
Bethesda announce their next gen Fall Out or Elders Scroll
Bioware show Mass Effect 4
Activision show next gen Call of Duty
Rockstar makes appearance in Ms show

hardware wise they either need to match PS4 or beat it along with all its amazing features such as recording gameplay and spectating along with their own innovations how they will improve their service and xbox live and hopefully its free this time and follow what Sony is doing a seperate paid service PSN plus but online gaming free.

They don't need to make Live entirely free, but they are better off following Sony's PS Plus route. Make gaming online free, maybe put "restrictions" on it to an extent, but offer a premium service that you pay for. However unless subscriptions are slipping, why bother?

If they focus on Kinect, a lot of gamers will be mad.

BanBrother4095d ago

Soldier, you are absolutely right. A lot of people I know are fed up with Xbox, so MS are going to have to do a great big deal to bring some people in. Kinect is basically making every X-box owner mad. I'm glad a have multiple consoles, as Xbox fans are getting a raw deal.

TBH, I am very sick of them. They need to look at what Sony is doing, and follow suit. It's adapt or die at this point, and I only pray that gamers will no support them IF Kinect is the only thing they showcase at their reveal. Nothing to do with being a fanboy, just being smart. Support those who support you.

Crystallis4095d ago

@Soldierone. I agree, but MS wont do that. They already make money off of xbx live. MS basically shot themselves in the foot and this will be their downfall. A friend of mine is already fed up with the way MS handles their online subscription and decided not to support them with their next console releases. Why you ask, because he comes to my house and plays all those games for free online on my ps3.

fsfsxii4094d ago

Wait, isn't XBL is better than PSN???
Why would they do the same as PSN??

They clearly never did, hence why they spent so many BILLIONS on other publishers as a last resort.

anast7h ago

They have a plan. It's to move everything toward streaming and mobile. This is just the next step.

Cacabunga6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

With half of the money they spent, they could have been on the very top and the gaming industry would be way bigger than it is.. encourage developers, indies, make them grow trust them and they will deliver.

Tody_za6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

What are you talking about Cacabunga? The Xbox faithful insisted that Microsoft has infinite money, and after Activision they should buy Square Enix and Capcom before Sony does. There was no chance ever that Microsoft would do this. They would use their infinite millions and Bitcoins to invest in 50 new IP and beat everyone.

Tody_za3h ago

Did I really need to add a /s to my comment...

SonyStyled1h ago

The Parent company of Xbox spent billions on publishers, not Xbox

andy857h ago

To ruin great studios it's looking like

Skuletor6h ago

Sure, a plan to be a more hated game company than EA. Ubisoft were recently giving them a run for their money but I think Xbox have really knocked it out the park with their latest stunt.

neutralgamer19926h ago

Absolutely not, their whole plan is at odd with what MS wants

Phil wants GP to become big
MS wants to sell games and make billions

GP can’t be sustained with AAA games which take 3-5 years and 7 figure budgets. Only go put those games on GP day one. Why do you think games are coming out on other platforms?

People want a change and want Phil gone without realizing if someone new comes along they may want to change everything again so we just keep going in circles. Phil has to realize that and give clear message on the direction of Xbox

Brad Hilderbrand explains the reason behind the recent Xbox studio closures

There are two reasons why all those Bethesda studios closed, and neither of them have anything to do with Bethesda (directly)...

Game Pass and Activision.

The guy confirming what we've all (well, most of us) been saying since the latest purchase.

crazyCoconuts8h ago

Remember the relatively common counter that went something like "I'm sure you arm-chair CEOs know better how to run a company than the biggest company in the world"?

I mean - there's a lot to running a company for sure, but on this topic it's hard to understand how Phil and team didn't see this coming.

Tody_za8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

Phil and team knew it was coming and planned for it. It's not even a conspiracy, it's simply the business of cutting costs and superfluous studios after a major acquisition. They don't give a damn about Tango Gameworks or other small creative studios that won't recoup their losses. They don't care about investing in this industry. They have no interest in risky and expensive new IP. They are only interested in profiting off ownership of Bethesda IP, Call of Duty and Candy Crush.

I guarantee you that not one single game under their banner will improve or become bigger and better.

Welcome to the Xbox family, what a pathetic joke.

Anyone who continues to support this, enjoy your future, because this is it. Ninja Theory is next, and Perfect Dark after that.

Christopher7h ago

Especially not with the evidence of tons of existing movie streaming subs out there and how they fail to make a profit with over 100m users each quarter.

fr0sty16m ago

Xbox releases more first party studios than first party games.

Lightning776h ago

Apparently they're debating if they wanna put the new Cod on Gamepass or not.

Either grow GP with Cod or don't put it on GP and grow the revenue the traditional way while GP will suffer.

The mess that MS puts themselves in.

badz1495m ago

LOL the cheerleaders for the ABK acquisition were all cheering for CoD to be on GP day 1 and they were adamant that Jim Ryan was scared because of THAT and was fighting for the survival of the PS brand if CoD is taken away or given day 1 on GP. hahaha...now suddenly MS is unsure if they wanna put CoD on GP day 1??

isn't this false marketing? they said ALL (not some) 1st party xbox games will be released on GP day 1 and CoD is now 1st party starting last year! it's right there still on their website.

lawsuit time??

XiNatsuDragnel11h ago

I'm not surprised Microsoft guys are crock nuff said

isarai11h ago(Edited 11h ago)

Honestly i think Bethesda needs to buy themselves out of zenimax/MSs hands and do their own thing, i honestly think that would fix a lot of issues and save them from a potential closure.

Zeref10h ago

There's a reason they sold in the first place. And Bethesda is not closing anytime soon lol. As much as I hate the studio closures. They were all small studios 2 of them were mobile studios.

I think these are growing pains and Xbox will get back on track. But they're not getting any more passes.

jwillj2k49h ago(Edited 9h ago)

I’d like to see your reaction to being growing pained out of your job after the launch of a successful product.

Mr_cheese7h ago

Excuses, Excuses, excuses.

If growing pains have been happening for the best part of a decade, they're not growth.

XiNatsuDragnel6h ago

Zeref nii San
I'm sorry but xbox has been rightfully bashed due to constant incompetence

romulus236h ago

Yet you literally just gave them a pass, being "small studios" or "mobile studios" is irrelevant. There's no excsue for closing Tango, none. They praise the game, they PR talk about it's the kind of game the company needs and yet they shutter the developer, that's foul on every level.

Chevalier12m ago(Edited 8m ago)

Ah Zeref head in the sand like a idiot. Gamepass is a absolute failure like we all told you. Nothing at this point will turn this around. It's not growing pains, the growth is done. Even streaming with 100 million subscribers can't turn a profit and you think Xbox with Gamepass will turn it around? Lol.

It's not a coincidence that Xbox stopped announcing Xbox Gamepass numbers just like they stopped announcing Xbox One hardware numbers and no Series S/X numbers which are behind the Xbox One even.

Remember when we said Xbox customers don't buy games?! Lol. Well this confirmed literally everything we told Xbox fans that said Gamepass was very profitable? Sorry revenues and lack of profit suggest otherwise

Can't wait to see your reaction when their 2nd round of closures happens. Perfect Dark studio and Ninja Theory will next.

Bethesda greenlit Redfall, launched Fallout 76 in the condition it was in (and the fiasco with the bonus bag), and spent all that time on Starfield finishing it as it was with that same engine. Wolfenstein Youngblood exists because of them too, not Microsoft.

Are you *sure* leaving them alone would actually result in a better outcome, not just a different one?

isarai5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

A lot of this excessive monetization, and GAAS crap started when Zenimax decided to start looking for a buyer. Not a coincidence that there was a sudden shift in prioritizing profits above quality or even coherence at the same time. They wanted big numbers to attract buyers, now that they've been bought, MS wants exactly what they were baited with.

However even under Zenimax they made enough to self publish sometimes, so i would imagine it's not too far fetched that they could pay their way into independence if they REALLY wanted to.

Also even people at Bethesda and Arkane were hoping MS would cancel the game as again, they were forced to make something they didn't want to make.

Einhander197210h ago

Ah, we can see how the Microsoft media machine works.

Every article I read now is some kind of attempt to shift the blame off Microsoft and paint them as the victims or convince people that Microsoft mistakes were just some kind unforeseeable unfortunate twist of fate.

The shills are out in full force today.

Christopher10h ago

This is not at all what this article is saying. It's saying that honest and useful studios are getting closed because of big money deals elsewhere and the faults with game pass as a model.

Einhander197210h ago

I understand what the article is about.

It's a deflection, it's a putting the cart before the horse article.

Let me tell you how this problem wouldn't have existed in the first place.

Microsoft not creating a service funded by subsidization and having the foresight to see that it would disrupt consumer spending habit to begin with. Then not buying Bethesda and undertaking costs for a service that was already failing to pay for itself because their own expectations of Game Pass having "billions" of subscribers was unobtainable from the very start.

And if you don't think that was the case go back to the article on the day Game Pass launched and read the comments from people from day one who foresaw that this would be an unsustainable model and would cause people to stop spending in the same way.

Christopher10h ago

***Microsoft not creating a service funded by subsidization and having the foresight to see that it would disrupt consumer spending habit to begin with.***

This article literally supports this opinion. He's not praising Game Pass or the ABK purchase.

Einhander19729h ago(Edited 9h ago)

This is an explanation of why it failed, there is zero blame put onto Microsoft itself.

Yes, it talks about what went wrong, but it doesn't say Microsoft shouldn't have done it. It doesn't say Phil should have foreseen this outcome and stopped before it got to this point.

"convince people that Microsoft mistakes were just some kind unforeseeable unfortunate twist of fate"

Christopher9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

***but you're seeing the impact; all those smaller studios making really interesting games are going to fall away, simply because as good as games like Hi-Fi Rush are, they're never going to make enough money to make up that $70B hole that Xbox now has to dig itself out of.***

If you see that as support or you explicitly just want people to end their argument with "and, in conclusion, Microsoft bad" then that's on you. This article does not support Microsoft's choices and highlights the faults. Nothing it says is good about these choices, even saying that putting CoD on Game Pass would be money losing for them because they've set themselves up for failure (and not putting it on there will drop subscriber numbers like crazy, meaning their Game Pass plans were shit to begin with).

No matter how you look at it, they're saying Microsoft made decisions that hurt the bottom line, force closures, and leave Game Pass in a situation where they lose no matter what they do. It's all negative.

Einhander19729h ago

Christopher, if Microsoft hadn't made Game Pass and bought a bunch of publishers would this article even need to exist?

Christopher9h ago

***Christopher, if Microsoft hadn't made Game Pass and bought a bunch of publishers would this article even need to exist? ***

How is this an argument to anything being discussed? This is just as valuable of an argument as "if fish had stayed in deeper waters, they wouldn't have evolved to tetrapods, adapted to shallow water and then to land, and we wouldn't even exist and have to worry about game pass at all."

You're bringing nothing to this argument and then complaining that other people are highlighting the issues with Game Pass and spending tens of billions on studios because what we should be discussing is what it would be like if Microsoft hadn't done any of that.

Well, they did do it. Now pull up your big boy pants and join in on the discussion of what that has meant for the industry since then and, especially right now, how that is affecting the industry and game studios under Microsoft. None of us are able to go back in time and change what was done.

Einhander19728h ago(Edited 8h ago)

Christopher, this isn't me not understanding what the article is about, it's you not understanding what I am saying.

If you want me to make excuses for Microsoft's bad decisions you're not going to get that or just agree with people who are doing that, it's not going to happen, nor are you going to convert me into thinking xbox "needs to exist".

Ya know what, maybe "Microsoft bad".... maybe their decisions ARE having a negative effect on the industry, and instead of deflecting from their actual actions and making excuses for them we stand up and say "no" "Microsoft is hurting the industry"

And maybe, just maybe, it was so obvious that this was going to be the outcome that even nobodies in comment sections on websites were able to easily predict this outcome, yet Microsoft did it anyway then kept doing and even when it became undeniable that it was having a negative impact on their business and and the industry itself, then they knowingly made even bigger purchases and caused more problems.

And the one thing you're right about is that I can't go back in time, but I CAN speak up and try to keep it from happening again...

Maybe if the people who were speaking up 7 years ago were listened too we wouldn't be having this discussion and Tango and Arkane would still be in business along with all the other people who have lost their jobs due to Microsoft's actions.

Do you like analogies?

What you're saying is like an alcoholic crashing their car then trying to explain it by saying it was caused by everything except the fact that they were dunk because they are an alcoholic and don't want to stop drinking.

TiredGamer8h ago

The article is essentially focusing the blame on MS. GamePass was a hail mary play to change the gaming paradigm and carve out a special niche for themselves, emulating the Netflix model, that might have led to MS becoming the leader in the long-term. Unfortunately, the subscriber growth isn't really there, and the model isn't really built to weather that lack of revenue. MS is now in a restructure mindset to figure out how they balance out their model in a way that can still make them money.

've always believed that GamePass was a high risk shot that had a very low chance of long-term success. But the problem with it, whether it succeeded or not, is that it accelerated the proverbial "race to zero" consumer expectation that ran its course in the mobile gaming industry in the late 2000s. When consumers start thinking that games should be "cheap" (as in through a $10/month all-you-can-eat subscription model), it turns the narrative against games being priced at realistic levels. So with the GamePass failure, they've not only sabotaged their market share, but they've impacted the entire industry and devalued the cost of game development to the average consumer. So now it's harder to develop mega-big budget games and to earn the revenue needed to pay for them.

XiNatsuDragnel6h ago

Again terrible excuses in the 1st place

Christopher7h ago

***If you want me to make excuses for Microsoft's bad decisions you're not going to get that or just agree with people who are doing that, it's not going to happen, nor are you going to convert me into thinking xbox "needs to exist". ***

No one is asking you to make excuses for Microsoft's bad decisions nor is anyone asking you to convert to anything.

***Ya know what, maybe "Microsoft bad".... maybe their decisions ARE having a negative effect on the industry, and instead of deflecting from their actual actions and making excuses for them we stand up and say "no" "Microsoft is hurting the industry" ***

Literally no one here is doing this. They're literally discussing how Microsoft's decisions have hurt the industry. Except you. You're rambling about why people aren't complaining about Microsoft when people are in fact complaining about Microsoft.

*** And the one thing you're right about is that I can't go back in time, but I CAN speak up and try to keep it from happening again... ***

Then perhaps actually add something to the conversation other than calling people shills when people are complaining about the decisions and repercussions of Microsoft's actions.

Tacoboto7h ago

Christopher, you're fighting a block wall here - Ein will continue twisting and contorting any remark to fit his self-created narrative.

Einhander19726h ago(Edited 6h ago)

"Then perhaps actually add something to the conversation other than calling people shills when people are complaining about the decisions and repercussions of Microsoft's actions."

Cristopher, in no way is the author of this article complaining, they are explaining what happened it's literally the title. They never once say that Microsoft shouldn't have bought Zenimax or Activision or that Game Pass was a bad idea to begin with. They think the problem with Game Pass is that it didn't grow fast enough, not that it was a bad idea from the get go.

BTW this is his job title.

"Public Relations and Communications Leader"

What do you think a Public Relations and Communications Leader does to make money?

Edit: I have read a dozen of these articles that just started coming out in the last 24 hours that are trying to shift the conversation away from blaming Microsoft, the shift here and in several other articles is trying to say it just didn't gain subscribers fast enough, not that it was a bad idea to begin with that was doomed to fail or placing the blame on anyone.

It was all just an unforeseeable outcome, no one should be held responsible it was just a billion dollar oopsie that's costing thousands of people their jobs and has caused a downturn in the entire industries sustainability.

Oopsie!

It's greed. MS has the IP's it wants now it's dumping the studios that it's raided, MS will still make money from Tango's games unlike the people that made them. If anyone follows MS outside of gaming you'll see this is what they do, buy companies take what they want consolidate some of the workforce and shut them down. I don't know why people are acting so surprised when this is Microsoft being Microsoft.

MS is a three trillion dollar company, if it enters a market it has no need to compete, they take what they want and with the financial influence it can bypass laws that are meant to protect the consumer and the workforce. Just look at how they are cornering the AI market right now with buyups and investments.

Microsoft Is Finally Ending Its Focus On Big Budget Gaming Nonsense

Back when the Xbox 360 launched, Microsoft pushed the big budget game as a differentiator. Following all the recent layoffs, it’s clear this strategy has run its course.

Einhander197212h ago(Edited 12h ago)

The Microsoft shill take on the Microsoft causing the death of big budget gaming...

The whole driving force for growth in gaming both technologically, creatively and financially was all nonsense, and it was definitely not because Microsoft ran the industry into the ground with obviously bad decisions and creating an unprofitable business model that massively disrupted consumer spending habits. /s

RpgSama11h ago

First, F**** Forbes and their shill take, I hope the money cleared by now.

Second, Which big budget games I might ask? Microsoft has been in a rut for like a decade now, with no big publisher and developers puechases they would have not released anything in the last 5 years but the new Halo and Forza.

Eonjay8h ago

Fortunately for us, since we know this message is basically coming from Microsoft, we can read into their motives. Why are they trying to turn people against big budget games and who would it help.... hmmm.

neutralgamer19927h ago

GP is like any content service it needs new content. AAA games take 100 plus million (low end estimates since most AAA games take double that) and it 4-5 years to develop. That’s why there were 2 god of war games instead of 3 because Cory felt like it would take too long

I am not defending MS. That’s just the reality when you put all your eggs in one basket (gamepass) and now they need content. Sadly that’s what we all said would happen and is happening. GP will be a service for AA games with 1-2 AAA games on yearly basis. And I am all for AA games because to me that’s where developers can take chances on smaller budgets but MS has mismanaged this whole situation from the beginning. Their messaging needs to be clear and it’s not

They own so many studios and IP’s they just need to get everyone on schedule so that there are games releasing every few months on GP. But I don’t even think Phil knows what he wants. It seems his goals change constantly

Game pass is not a sustainable and take two ceo was right when he said that it doesn’t make any business sense to release huge AAA games day one on GP. Just like call of duty shouldn’t be on GP because why give up on 15-20 million sales

Einhander19724h ago

"And I am all for AA games because to me that’s where developers can take chances on smaller budgets"

How'd that work out for Tango?

Do you think less AAA games will increase game pass revenue or decrease it when it has less value? What if they also have to increase the costs?

S2Killinit6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

Right on.

Hahaha MS has ended “focus” on games? Lol when? 3 generations ago maybe?

notachance1h ago

Man I don’t know what the writer is smoking, anyone with a braincell can see what will happen is the exact opposite, they’re gonna double down on big name IPs and turn them into GaaS and milk them to the extreme with multiple studios focusing on specific IPs instead of creating their own games.

It was so clear with the way they keep 343 despite multiple failures and shutting down Tango even after winning awards, MS is a service provider and not a product creator, they will buy the product from others and turn it into a service.

Microsoft is finally... ahhh I've never heard this one before!

Petebloodyonion11h ago

LOL, this article is a big pile of dog crap...
Spencer has been constantly telling ppl that NO they would not go the route of having games like TLOU, Uncharted, etc because Playstation exists and prefers to focus on a diverse portfolio.

How many years have we seen Xbox as no game and we don't want small games like ORI, Pentiment, Grounded, etc.?

That's the real tragedy and why lots of gamers are mad at MS right now
because they have been championing smaller titles and yet fired the ppl delivering exactly what they were proning about.

So no the only nonsense is that MS seems now to be going BACK to AAA popular titles..sorry, I meant refocusing effort on core established IP where broken GAAS might be rewarded versus praised and rewarded work.

Einhander197211h ago(Edited 11h ago)

https://media1.tenor.com/m/...

You read an article cheerleading the end of big budget games and all the other articles about problems and this is what you have to say? That's what you think "the real tragedy" is?

I thought that xbox fans might finally "get it", but no, it seems they don't even understand what is happening and what is at stake.

Petebloodyonion8h ago

Please tell me what's happening and what is at stake

Since it's not big companies closing small studios, killing innovation while refocusing assets on big ongoing projects and core IP?

Let's See MS Close Tango Studio mentions that they are too thin on key project
Sony Close London Studio and make massive cuts in Firespite will reallocate resources to core project
EA will focus on Core project
Square will focus on big established IP
.....
