How Microsoft Can Top the PlayStation Conference

The PlayStation 4 reveal yesterday was impressive and threw down a gauntlet. How can Microsoft steal the show from Sony?

Microsoft wont abandon the profits. If they can keep their brand perception ahead, then they can continue getting away with charging for LIVE. I am expecting some solid OS features and app partnerships that can take MS a long way when it comes to being a family-oriented entertainment hub. If they can make those new consumers pay for an XBL subscription, then there wont be a necessity to go free to access LIVE.

- Most of their 1st party studios are developing Kinect titles. They're small teams, 343i and Turn 10 excluded. Chances of seeing a new hardcore IP are low, unless you're expecting a 3rd party timed exclusive. 343i are working on the next Halo, Turn 10 the next Forza

- Matching or surpassing the power of the PS4 is very important, agreed

- Define low. I doubt the PS4 or next Xbox will be under $450

- Expansion of Xbox Live services are a given. Xbox Live will not go free

- Playing online for free should be their main focus. PSN does it, why can't Microsoft?

- I don't think they'll block used games. If they do, they might as well throw in the towel now

The way i see it, Microsoft got away with charging for P2P with the original Xbox because it was seen as a worthy service because it was unmatched on consoles .. YET, it was still P2P,charging for which is insulting. And since Xbox popularly boomed this gen, people turned a blind eye to the fact that you're forced to pay for basic online connectivity.

So if consumers are smart and see Sony's approach to the 'Freemium' model, i honestly don't see Microsoft getting away with it for much longer. Facing the pretty much inevitable, Sony and MS' services will be in the same ballpark next gen, so forcing you for what is basic entry to the multiplayer sections of games you've already paid full asking price for is going to push people further away from MS, especially since Sony and their games are no longer looking to be the industry's whipping boy.

Consumer standards should've been all over MS as soon as they charged you to access FREE apps every year.

I mean last gen the 360 and ps3 were more alike than different. It seems this gen they could be even closer in terms of specs.

if that's true, there would be pretty much no difference in a game for ps4 as it would be on 720. unless of course, that game is exclusive or offers something to differentiate it from the other.

Ms will more than likely be more focused on the entertainment aspect. We all assume sony is their biggest rival when it comes to gaming but Apple seems more of a serious threat when it comes to other entertainment aspects.

So while i await some hard facts about what the nextbox can do for gaming, i am also eagerly awaiting to see how they take on Apple and the new generation of smart devices that are more prevalent in our everyday lives.

Oh and making online free....yeah that would be a good move but dont give up on the members who have been loyal for so long. they have to build more trust with content partners to deliver the goods that are WORTH paying for not just the fact that we are paying for them.

I wish MS would make XBL free but I think most of us don't see that happening. It's just too much of a cash cow for them.

Other than that I would like to see some new IPs from MS. They came out of the gate on fire with the 360 and then dwindled into relying heavily on 4 franchise titles, multiplats and Kinect.

I guess we will have to wait until E3 to find out. This should be one hell of an E3. Sony set the bar high and you know MS doesn't want to lose their foothold in North America. Should be very interesting.

One thing is for sure, Sony has my attention. Let's see if MS can match or surpass them. Either way I'm getting both day one.

Although, Sony didn't go for the jugular they definately made the case for the PS4. In my opinion, they unintentionally made the case that the PS3 might be a little stronger games wise than the PS4 is early on.

MS definately is in the same position it always was, they need to deliver.

- The rumor is that Sony's online structure won't be free. Regardless, MS just simply needs to keep the focusing on strengthening Live's content and capabilities, all the while selling the gamer on why Live is still where 20 million will want to game daily.

- Adding Blu-Ray is huge for MS, but if the 720 is BC compatible the system has a one-up on Sony.

- Over 20 first party devs are making next gen games for MS, not including partnerships with Crytek and Epic. So don't just worry about simpy releasing New IPs, make GREAT NEW IPS that can stand toe to toe with the big dogs. Not one new Sony new IP could touch Killzone 4. The Wii-U is in peril not because of New IPs like Zombie-U, it's because they need the first party staples that Nintendo fans love in the roster to sell systems.

- Don't listen to the haters of Kinect. Sony didn't include a camera for nothing. We just watch Sony's most creative developer demonstrate a casual MOVE game as their next project. Show off Kinect 2.0 and the Wii-U audience and the gamers who bought the original Kinect will still be onboard. Especially if those big Kinect games like the K. Sports and DCs are backwards compatible.

- Launch a seperate show like Sony did, much closer or prior to E3 and announce the sysyem and gain 2 extra hours of coverage for the new sysyem as Sony wisely did.

At the end of the day, even with the great position the current gen Xbox has put MS in, they need to double down and even work harder this coming gen because Sony is going all in.

MS can afford to give MP away for free come next gen. Sony will have paid subscriptions but will keep the core of the system free which includes free MP as well as other features.

The new social features look crazy on PS4. And I'm sure next gen Xbox Live will be insane as well, but I believe MP won't be in the "gold" package come next gen no way.

MS has caught a glimpse of what PS4 will be able to do. Something like MP now is nothing, feesable and basic feature that everyone wants out of the box and I'm sure MS now knows this now.

good list but unfortunately all the reports and rumours are leading to the exact opposite of those points. kinect 2.0 is supposedly shipping with every xbox which indicates a focus on kinect and the always online/always connected to kinect are very worrying indeed. i find it really hard to see microsoft moving away from that after putting so much emphasis on the kinect. also paying just to be able to play online and paying to use features that i already pay for like paying for the ability to use netflix is an absolute no no for me.

1. Kinect is not better than move. There hasn't been one game that's worked really well and made people go WOW this amazing. On the other hand games like KZ3, infamous 2, sly cooper collection etc. are fully workable with move. I don't care about motion controls but buttons beat none.

It wont be free and neither will the ps4. But sony was smart integrating psplus because gamers wont mind parting with money, even if its mandatory, if they know they will be getting alot in return.

I love both sony and microsoft for different reasons. I love the overall xbox experience and i used to love it for its games but sony has a chokehold on that right now. I understand that microsoft is using its xbox division to keep its chokehold on the OS. They know that momentum is shifting towards mobile and living room experience so they created an OS with win 8 to move in that direction. They want to be the pc in your living room.

This is the MOST IMPORTANT thing from last night. The destiny reveal. In the past, microsoft had timed exclusivity with activision and others because it benefited them. Xbox was king console. Did activision pick sony as the better console last night? If companies begin throwing their hats in with it will hurt alot because microsoft has used this in the past couple yrs to ride out this gen. This could be a disturbing trend.

On the flipside, the cable thing may not be so bad. What if microsoft sold their next xbox for $99 or $199 with subscription fee. It works for phones and could get the 720 in everyones household very early on. xbox 360 was known as the affordable console last gen (which is debatable once u pay for everything) but if tbey could do it again, it could be life or death.

Its going to be hard for ms to catch up to those specs, sony was indeed impresive. Diddnt you see the new controller? It has many changes and new features. It's handles are longer and bulkier to fit the hands better, The analog sticks are now concave and the triggers are now convex. IMO they nailed the controller.

Even though some games were multiplatform in the show such as Watchdogs and Destiny but having Bungie in a Sony show was a big slap to Microsoft. Also having all these amazing multiplaforms demoed in Sonys show such as Watchdogs.

That's what I said In my first post of today. Prove that your specs are not an reaction to leaked docs from a competitor with a real console. *A* GAME on a real console is more exciting.

It was like that reveal was slapped together made with assumumed directions from the compition. Everything shown seemed like what we know about the 720 through rumors/old leaked docs and slightly one uped.

People are going to be in for a shock when they find out this PS4 reveal was based on old ideas from MSFT. When MSFT show their new console showing the docs specs were just rough draft ideas(starting point) teh net will explode.

Sony is hiding something either the console is no where close to being done and they wan't to steal MSFT hype this E3 or it had diffent specs at first until they heard about possible 720 specs and redesigned PS4.

It's just not us many many people that know about PS4 is wondering this shaddy behavior of going through this trouble with the reveal talking a ton about specs yet do not have a console built.

Exactly. I am EXCITED for the announcement for the PS4 and all the sweet sexy possibilities that comes with it, HOWEVER what they showed were all games and demos running on PC hardware pretty much. The Killzone gameplay looked stellar... however to be honest, if you PC game for the last few years you seen this level of play and better with better graphics and physics.
I think we ALL want to see actual hardware from both Sony and MS. Not games running on PC hardware matching their systems specs...

Microsofts Xbox business profit model is heavily based on Xbox Live subscription.
Since MS outsources the production of the X360 and then sells the 360 and the Kinect at a minimal profit. There business model revolves around Live. MS would have to change there business model if Live were to be free. I doubt MS will change their business model. So I can accurately assume that Live will not be free.

My prediction for MS

MS will announce their next system @ E3 and than state it will be available immediately after the conference. We all know MS doesn't care if they rush a faulty product to market just to be first. Hopefully they won't have a similar issue like the 360 had it when it was rushed out the door.

For me, they first need to regain my confidence in their brand and their future plans for it. Sony's conference for me, was solid mainly because for 2 hours almost everything they discussed was related to gaming. Ever since that scary E3 conference with the kids, I've lost faith in Microsoft's commitment to provide AAA quality gaming experiences for only the Xbox. At this stage, I wouldn't be surprised if a good 1/3 of the nextbox reveal was entirely non gaming related things.

If Microsoft want my support:

New core gaming IPs and for me to come away feeling like they are committed to providing more and more exclusive core gaming experiences.

Downplay Kinect. I can accept that they might want to bundle Kinect with their next gen console however I think at this point it's fair to say that Kinect games just aren't desirable.

XBL gold service comparable to PS Plus. I can understand why they'd be reluctant to offer free online gaming when so many people are prepared to pay however I think it's about time they at least make it worth people's money instead of paying for online gaming and a bunch of fancy features we can do for free on PCs, Mobiles and Tablets.

Twitch partnership. An outside chance but with Sony announcing ustream coming to ps4, I really hope Microsoft can pull something off like a twitch tv partnership to offer a similar service.

Blu Ray. This should be a given, Microsoft can't spout a bunch of "the only entertainment platform you need" nonsense without being Blu Ray compatible.

I don't think there would be much to top honestly, show the console, show some of the features. Sony busted out Move, so I don't see a problem with showing off an improved Kinect, just keep it short and sweet.

Show more than tech demo's and trailers that we've seen before. If you show third party games like Watch Dogs, make sure it is actually running on the new hardware, not PC like yesterday.

Sony is not charging for online. That quote people keep referring to didn't suggest anything different than what is in place now. I do believe though that MS at some point next gen will make online multiplayer for free. I've said it before, in this day and age there really is no justification for forcing people to pay in order to play online. There are other ways to make money. Nintendo doesn't charge for theirs. Valve doesn't charge for theirs. So what does that tell you? Even if charging for Live remains ideal for MS to continue doing for next gen, it doesn't necessarily mean it would be good for Sony to it. There is no guarantee that Sony's customers will be willing to pay especially when it has been free all this time. Just because MS's customers are willing to do it doesn't mean Sony's customers are willing.

Let me start by saying I was very impressed with Sony's conference, Mark Cerny has restored my faith in Sony after have a very negative view of Sony the last 8 years. However, for people to not even give MS a chance to try and top what Sony has done here is the definition of what is wrong with gaming and gamers in general.

You have no idea what they have planned or no idea what their system architecture is beyond rumors. Also, it has been said several times that MS has at least 4 brand new IPs in the works and has formed several studios of top talent over the last several years. MS will not focus on casual because this is a brand new console cycle and they know where their bread and butter is. MS is not stupid they know what gamers want and now that they have built up a casual audience, their creative and passion for hardcore gamers can flourish.

I believe it will be a neck and neck battle again for the hardcore and we'll just have to wait to see who comes out on top.

Broadening the benefits of Live to Steam levels would be a wonderful way to start justifying paying for Live. But I think it would just be a start. One thing that has grown last generation is the existence of competitive gaming. Live touched on it w/ some online tourneys, but it's primarily existed in PC gaming. Bringing the most competitive games to Live would help. Most of these games are free (DOTA2 or LoL), so adding incentive to go through LIVE w/ more content might sweeten the deal. MOBAs have been taking gaming by storm, I think it'd be a great way to get a user base that's similar to CoD fans. I'm wondering why MS doesn't establish addicting MMORPGs or MOBAs on their systems. It sounds like Destiny will be that project, but who knows what the heck that will be. If you're going to make an online MMO, I think a better Day Z or even Planetside would be a better direction (unless Destiny is essentially Planetside...). The next big project for MS needs to have that addiction factor, ever-growing updates, a solid competitive foundation, and BALANCED GAMEPLAY. You can't go w/ these short burst games this generation. I think you need to focus on supporting a solid gaming experience that will last over the course of the ENTIRE life-cycle for the console. Lol has been out for three years and it's more popular than ever. They add characters/skins every month and updates are implemented in "seasons," because these things are constantly changing and are becoming more balanced, it gives each season a new excitement that keeps players coming back for more. Get that on the new Xbox, and keep people addicted the console...

The focus on Kinect argument is and always will be silly. It was as silly as Sony's focus on exclusives. Most didn't sell. But they have manged to convince many that it means Sony cares more for gamers. So in that sense, it worked. Microsoft did the same thing with Kinect. They increased their install base to include casual gamers.

Sony's mistake with price allowed Microsoft to do things they couldn't have done if Sony had been strong out of the gate. They allowed Microsoft to get strong. But this generation should be even. Sony still has it's name, Microsoft has it's install base now and a solid footing in gaming.

I honestly think that Microsoft needs to reinvest big time in indie games. They already have a low amount of new IP's, so a service similar to Greenlight could be a huge boost to them. Indie developers could develop games to be sold on the marketplace and if they get a large amount of sales then Microsoft could extend a partnership offer in exchange for part ownership of the title. Sony has at least three platforms to contend with as far as BC is concerned. That's interaction between six consoles counting the PS4, PSP and PSV. MS just has to worry about two, which was the same number Sony had to bother with with the PS2.

Also Yoshida has said pretty much every sony 1st party studio is working on something for ps4 which means a hell of alot of exclusive games lol I expect online will be free on ps4 but that ps plus will carry over (already confirmed by PS blog manager weeks ago in a comment) and that some of those social features/gaikai will be added in with it and the price increased slightly for the subscription. The copying of smart glass is important. I`m a Sony supporter, but what would make me buy the Xbox 720 is:

-MS shows a bunch of new IP`s, AAA or Indie, and keeps them coming for years to come

-Backwards compatibility out of the box(I would like to play the entire Halo and Gears series from the 360, plus the new games) - Also, This is a feature PS4 won`t have out of the box

-Make online multi-player free

-Add PS plus type features to Live, instant game collection, huge discounts, etc.

-Allow me to use 3rd party online apps for free, e.g. netflix without gold sub

-Match or exceed PS4 specs and features(8gb GDDR5,`share button`, play as you download, gakai type streaming service)

-Bluray or same size optical disc is a must

MS is in a decent position, they don`t need to outdo Sony`s announcement to do well. They just need to convice a chunk of their current fan base to stick with them, and convert a few Sony, Ninty fans along the way.

In my opinion, one ace up their sleeve is true backwards compatibility with 360 games offline. MS knows Sony can`t do it out of the box and must use Gakai for BC, so I would get on that ASAP if I was them.

Well from those reports recently where dev's have said it's not as powerful I'm concerned as to why, if they focus their main efforts on Kinect 2 I'm out.

They will have to do a hell of a lot more then whats listed in this article im not paying MS a damn cent for gold membership a second time just to play my games online. Plus with Sony's Gaikai functionality it will be hard for MS to top that if they haven't got it already.

All they have to do is launch another console which I'm sure they will show at E3 because their scared and jealous at the games THE PS4 is having right now. 1st make a system that doesn't gives out the RROD too your users 2nd they have too buy more exclusives as they usually do. GET RID OF THE KINECT and stop trying too be kid friendly cause Xbox doesn't have that many kid friendly games on their system.

allow current gen digital content playable on next gen console. thats the one thing that ruined my enthusiasm for ps4, when they said it wont be backwards compatible on physical or digital content
