The Last of Us release ahead of possible PS4 announcement

Peter Chubb:

A few days ago we told you that there was a rumor that Naughty Dog’s newest IP was to be released in the Spring (around the same time as GTA 5), we can now tell you that this was pretty much spot on because The Last of Us release date will be on the 7th of May. Now if we are to believe other rumors, then this could be just ahead of a possible PS4 announcement in June.

Failing to see how The Last of Us means we are getting a PS4...

Riderz13374172d ago

Well people were expecting this to come out at the end of 2013 (September-December) and if that was the case then there was no way Sony was going to release the PS4 just so it could compete with itself. This does not confirm PS4 coming out during Q2-Q3 of 2013 but there is a very good possibility that it will. Also how many games are schedules to be released during September-December? Just look at this, http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...
There is no game schedules to release for PS3/Xbox 360 during September to December.

Yui_Suzumiya4172d ago

Originally The Last of Us was supposed to be released in late 2012.

-Alpha4172d ago

Yep, the fact that Sony wont save this for Q4 gives a strong hint that they are wrapping up with the PS3.

This also seems to suggest that the Last Guardian will probably launch on PS4.

ritsuka6664172d ago (Edited 4172d ago )

Looks FF versus is going for PS4 like Last Guardian.

Brian1rr4172d ago

It's not the game it's the timing

SilentNegotiator4172d ago

It's pure speculation that it's release date change from fall to summer means that it's "getting out of the way" of PS4.

Belking4172d ago

I'm excited about the last of us next year but it doesn't mean anything about the ps4 will be announced next year. I hope it does but I don't see it. sony is still trying to recover from those staggering losses they have and vita is still struggling to find its way into the market. I'm still hoping for 2014 at the latest. Only one will be released next year and all signs point to the next xbox by this time next year.

Swiftcricket4172d ago

I agreed with you because I see nothing wrong with your thoughts on this, but thought I might share why this could possibly mean for PS4. It's no guarantee by any means but it is actually a small glimmer of hope. As soon as that release date showed on the screen "PS4 announcement at E3" was the first thing that popped into my head.

Just seems like Sony is getting some of their big releases out just before E3 (so that the PS4 announcement won't overshadow them and hurt sales), and their rather empty holiday season next year being a possible sign that it could release in that time frame. I'd say the former is very likely to happen but I wouldn't bet a whole lot of money on the latter. I won't be surprised if it does release next year though. Plans change, we could get both consoles next year.

Riderz13374172d ago

Their gaming division is one of the very few divisions actually making money. No way Sony would let Microsoft/Nintendo have a year+ with them being the only 2 consoles on the market. They made a huge mistake not releasing the PS3 earlier and they won't make that same mistake again. They'll invest more money into their gaming division whilst decreasing their investment in their TV division since that thing hasn't made a profit in YEARS. Regarding your vita statement, if Sony drops the price of the Vita to 199$ that thing will sell like hot cakes. I honestly don't see a huge problem with the 250$ price tag right now but if you include the high price of memory cards, then I can see that being a problem for some. Decrease the price of Vita to 199$ and keep the 250$ Vita BUT include a 32 gb memory card. Shouldn't be a problem selling that.

Belking4172d ago (Edited 4172d ago )

It's not much they can do about MS or Nintendo beating them to the market. They aren't going to win any battles when it comes to spending money because they just don't have the cash reserves that the other two have. Their gaming division isn't doing bad but not as well as people think. The vita sort of set them back a little. The software support for it is really hurting them.

k-dillinger4172d ago

yea if they dropped the price of vita to 199 a few months later gamers are still gonna say its too expensive and crying for a price drop yet again

VonBraunschweigg4172d ago

Just give-us a heads-up allright? Some time to save our money. Right now I'm not a rich man, so if I have to put down 500 or 600 on launchday again, and I don't mind doing that, just give me a few months extra this time. No, I don't mean delay it for Europe like last time, just a early notice. Say at GDC, so I can adjust my summerholiday plans. With E3 that may be too late. On behalf of all the poor paupers among us, thanx in advance:)

gamern4g4172d ago

I dont believe that year 2013 brings us new consoles. One of my friend is working in EA and he told me "not sure", nothing else, he cant tell me the truth.

Neo-Axl4172d ago

Get him drunk, he'll spill the whole next gen story with ya.

Microsoft once tried to nab LittleBigPlanet from Sony after a few drinks

It turns out that many moons ago, Microsoft once had its eye on the Sony published LittleBigPlanet series.

Microsoft had a good idea but fumbled it again.

Cacabunga1d 20h ago (Edited 1d 20h ago )

Project Spark idea was decent but they quickly gave up ..
LBP was wonderful

ApocalypseShadow2d ago

Microsoft in a nutshell. Always tried to poach Sony employees, games, 3rd party games and devices like the depth camera that was turned into Kinect but was running on PS2 before Xbox 360. Wouldn't be surprised they wanted LBP. Just like they worked behind the scenes pushing the MLB to bring Sony's baseball game to Xbox instead of making their own.
https://www.playstationlife...

They didn't spend years trying to develop their own baseball game. They wanted Sony's game.

They're scum.

Zachmo1821d 19h ago

Microsoft didn't force MLB on Xbox. MLB gave Sony 2 options either go multiplat or risk losing the license.

Rynxie1d 9h ago

And why do you think MLB said that? I believe Ms approached MLB.

ApocalypseShadow1d 8h ago (Edited 1d 8h ago )

Totally ridiculous comment.

The only exclusivity Sony had was to their own creation of The Show. Microsoft could have paid the MLB for the license just like Sony did and made their own baseball game.

Microsoft instead, groomed MLB for years in trying to poach Sony's game and bring it to Xbox. They're worth 3 TRILLION dollars. You think that's not enough money to make their own baseball game? Don't be delusional.

Microsoft spun it like they always do and told the media that they had to trust Sony with their hardware. After they put Sony in that position of not having a choice. Either go multiplatform or stop making one of their successful games. That's a no win scenario.

And what did Microsoft do? They didn't try to sell the game to the Xbox community. They put it on game pass to hurt Sony. Pushing the idea of why buy games that are $70 when you can play them in their cheap service for $10. It was a dirty tactic.

You fell for the Kool aid drink Microsoft served you instead of spitting it out. Hope it tasted good because you were fooled by Phil and the gang.

Xbox executive Sara Bond has told Axios that Microsoft spent a number of years trying to get MLB The Show onto Xbox consoles. And when it finally succeeded in breaking off PlayStation’s long-held exclusivity, the company had to “trust” Sony with pre-release Xbox Series X/S consoles.

Bond revealed that MLB The Show “always came up” in conversations between Microsoft and the Major League Baseball organization. “We always said, ‘We love this game. It would be a huge opportunity to bring it to Xbox.'” she recalled. However, when Microsoft’s efforts materialized, it put the company in an awkward situation where it had to send in pre-release consoles to a rival company.

Lying to yourself is unbecoming.

Article link tells you all you need to know in Sarah Bond's own words.

Hereandthere1d ago

They were too cheap/inept/lazy to develop their own mlb game, so they port begged for years and bribed the mlb to make the show multiplatform. Like i said many times, xbox brought nothing to the table their 24 years, ZERO.

ApocalypseShadow10h ago

At least you and others get it. Note drank the Kool aid and asked for seconds thinking it was refreshing.

Most don't even know how it all played out but it's there in black and white for all to see. Microsoft brought it up for years until the MLB forced Sony's hand. It was a win win for Microsoft. Kill one reason to buy a PlayStation or kill the game by dropping it in a cheap service to kill Sony's sales numbers on PlayStation.

"However, Healey said Media Molecule wouldn't have felt right doing that, adding it would have been "morally corrupt"."

Major kudos to Media Molecule for being an upright studio with principles.

Cockney5h ago

They chose well, Sony gave them the backing to pursue their dreams with no restrictions even tho their games especially dreams have very niche appeal. Media molecule and Sony deserve respect for this in an age of risk averse publishing.

RNTody1d 22h ago (Edited 1d 22h ago )

Great, more stories like this please. Show the last of the zombies holding the line what we've been saying for years: Microsoft is anti competition, anti industry and has no interest in making games at all.

But hey, at least there's an Xbox Games Showcase to look forward to, right?

Inverno1d 21h ago

Well considering SONY just killed the series, LBP would've been dead by now either way. Though MM probably wouldn't exist by now either, so I'm glad they stayed with SONY, hopefully they don't get shut down any time soon or ever honestly.

Sheppard7t31d 19h ago

How did Sony kill the series?

Inverno1d 19h ago

They shut down the servers, that's millions of user created levels gone. That and dead are pretty much the same, it's also been years since 3 and they cancelled HUB soooo.

1d 4h ago
fsfsxii1d 5h ago

They shutdown the servers because no one was playing, no one in the community cared about the user created levels so why keep them up? Wtf you guys would never succeed in running a business.

Inverno1d 4h ago

Yea dood no one was playing so they shut off the servers. Cause people with enough common sense can't just Google why they were actually shut of, right?
