Who Wants A Wii U?

No, that alluring title is not an introduction to Gamers Association’s grandest giveaway of all time. Rather, it’s an honest question concerning Nintendo’s newest console after considering some informal evidence from the system's first week on the streets. Because honestly, who wants a Wii U?

Apparrently at least a half million people in the United States.

Not interested at all. Even if I had a free one, i'd sell it on ebay ASAP and save the money to buy Bioshock Infinite for Vita, GTA V for ps3, MGS Ground Zeroes for ps3, and Shin Megami Tensei IV for 3ds.

Those are the top 4 games I want in 2013 (Beyond Two souls, and The last of us look tight too), but Wii U is not getting a single one of those in 2013. Rather save the remainder of that money on these games and start saving up for a PS4 and [possibly] the next Xbox.

Being logical here, Nintendo to my knowledge has stated that the Wii-U is gonna appeal to the "hardcore" ( I hate that word) gamer, by that I assume they mean the gamers that bought 360's and PS3's instead of the Wii, sooo this is the BIG question.

As of right now in 2012 assuming i'm a PS3/360 only owner why should I fork out $350 for a new system, to play games I can already play on my current console and will be able to play in the near future, with the exception of few exclusives, especially when theres virtually zero difference, graphics wise between the two ?
And in some cases the graphics and performance is actually inferior to the version I already.

I can pretty much assume that there is no reason for me to buy a Wii-U AS OF RIGHT NOW, If your a Wii only owner thats a non- casual gamer, this is a great way to play a fraction of the 3rd games that the Wii missed out on this gen, But for PS3/ 360 and even PC owners, i just see no real reason for them to rush out and buy the console, maybe in the near future , but as of right now.. . i'm sorry but i just can't see it.

The thing is when 'next gen' starts you'll be able to say the same thing about the 720/PS4....you can play the same games on the 360 and PS3.

So does that mean you won't be buying a PS4 or 720?

Because remember, many of 'next gen' game engines have already appeared on the 360/PS3.

That's why you were able to play Battlefield 3 and Crysis 2 on them.

So you won't have a real need to rush out and buy those either.

It's not a problem of Wii U, it's a problem that tech isn't advancing very much. That consoles have limitations PC's don't suffer from....ability to utilize 700-1500 watts to power a computer versus say 200-300 for a console. The ability to sell $1000 dollar graphics cards, and even SLI/crossfire them....or a console that will be hammered if it's $600 for being too expensive, and that need to be in the $399-$499 range.

So again it's not a problem of the Wii U, it's a problem ALL THREE will face.

That said, the Wii U does give you the gamepad experience, and does have much more modern tech that can be tapped when applied. It won't be major, and just like the 720/PS4, the Wii U will be behind PC's, but all three will still be nice.

They just aren't going to be big leaps, and most of the engines will run on the old hardware, as they already have games utilizing them. So really, the 360/PS3 will be viable for a few more years unless they kill off support to force users to buy the new gear.

I'm buying all three regardless, and have a good PC now, but the PS3/360 have the power to live on for a few more years if they allow it.

Oh okay, Look online dude....Cant find em, and I do not live in the sticks, here you cant find em. I live in LA.

Nintendo has enough hardcore fans that will automatically buy the system just to, well, buy the system. It's after this initial hype period is over that things will get especially interesting.

live2play4168d ago (Edited 4168d ago )

Oh come on

If it continues selling people will just come up with another excuse... oh um yea its still selling but its because people think its an ipad... oh um its only still selling because its the 4rth of july holiday... its easter... its another christmas WAIT TILL AFTER ITS 3RD CHRISTMAS

just like the trolls that say i will buy a nintendo console when its HD...

Wiiu releases ....oh um its not HD enough

Christopher4168d ago

@live2play: That's actually the logic from Pachter. He says it'll sell a few million to the Nintendo fans, but he's not sure of the longevity of the device.

Veni Vidi Vici4168d ago

No, if it keeps selling, that means that Nintendo has a product that people outside the hardcore Nintendo market want. If it stops selling then you know they don't. Right now, it's a mix of the hardcore faithful and some people that feel it's a good machine. You can't determine much right now. Things right now get even murkier due to the fact that Nintendo, and every other console manufacturer, intentionally hold back units to create false scarcity. Time will tell the real truth.

kneon4168d ago

I can find one easily, a quick check shows more than half of the Best Buys in my area have them in stock. And they had them in stock on the weekend when I was there.

AsimLeonheart4168d ago

Man, everything sells out at launch. Besides, selling out means nothing because it is a relative term. You can release a few units and then claim sold out everywhere. Nintendo is especially notorious for creating artificial hype in this way. They make people feel that they are missing something which is so hot and desirable. This trick drives even more sales, just like a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I rather have a PS4 and wait for the price to drop for the WiiU. If the latest rumors about the pricedrop for the 3ds is true. Then Im definitely waiting till this thing drop to $200 or lower. That a fair price for this system because the build quality and the hardware inside is just cheap for a 2012/2013 next gen console.

legend9114168d ago

Honestly, I'd wait for the PS4 as well but I also want to see what the Xbox 720 is capable of as well.

New X BOX and Playstation will be beasts

Shnazzyone4168d ago (Edited 4168d ago )

I want one. That remote control functionality alone is reason enough for me. But being an powerful HD console with nintendo behind it helps a bit too.

Anon19744168d ago (Edited 4168d ago )

I want one too. I love the renewed commitment to the core gamer and I love they've said pro-controller support will be available on most games, unlike the terrible support the "classic" controller received on the Wii.

However, I'm not in a hurry to jump onboard yet. I learned my lesson this current gen about buying launch consoles, and I have a backlog of games at the moment with not enough time to play as it is. There's nothing compelling me to pick up a Wii-U at this moment, but I'll probably get one in a year or two. By that time they'll probably be cheaper anyway, the bugs will be worked out and they'll be a more robust library of titles to choose from. Plus, by then my son and daughter will be a little older and they might be able to enjoy some of Nintendo's family friendly games as well.

I think it's better to leave games like AC: Amiibo Festival and Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash forgotten on the Wii U. Best case, they are mediocre games; worse case, they are very bad. It was a dark time for the Wii U, and the first only exists to sell Amiibo cards, whereas the second was put together in a couple of months with a shoestring budget, and it shows.

The rest of the list does have some really cool games, though. I would love to see a remake of Star Fox Zero with decent controls, and Xenoblade X doesn't require that much modification to work.

How would XCX work without dual screens functionality?

Cacabunga5d ago

Same as Paper Mario color splash. One of the best wiiu games and getting even better with dual screen. Same reason why i prefer Splatoon 1

Profchaos5d ago

This article leaves out Nintendo's most controversial game to date devils Third.
I personally found the cover system really fun in that one compared to at the time most fps games completely lacking one.

Stevonidas5d ago

Devil's Third is HIGHLY underrated.

repsahj5d ago

They should remake Starfox to the switch 2. Very beautiful game during gamecube days.

Chocoburger5d ago

Kirby is always ignored or forgotten by people, so good to see it mentioned here.
Play Kirby Canvas Curse on DS, and then play Rainbow Curse on Wii U, they're really fun and unique 'platformers' without any actual jumping.
