Sony and Nintendo are getting it right, so why can't Microsoft?

Sony and Nintendo both offer day-one downloads of select new releases - even including major titles like Assassin's Creed III. Why can't Microsoft get it right, too?

My theory? Trying to keep retailers happy. It's easier to negotiate display preference with retailers when your platform does not compete with them via digital sales.
That's my theory and not an excuse for them. I couldn't be bothered either way, data costs way too much in South Africa for full game downloads to be viable for me.

The_Con-Sept4181d ago (Edited 4181d ago )

Understanding the consumer is crucial in this business. In fact in any business. This is simply what consumers have always wanted and have been enjoying thoroughly on Steam. It is a no brainer to be honest.

Besides Wal Mart won't sell cd's unless the producer agrees to Wal Mart's terms. That may only be for the music industry but it's not a far cry from this happening to games.

nukeitall4181d ago

That is why I don't think MS cares to release digital only games. That market is rapidly growing, but the demand for it is still far far far far outpaced by retail disc sales.

NeverEnding19894181d ago

Microsoft seemed to be leading when it game to full game digital downloads earlier this generation. I remember this distinctly because PS3 fanboys swore that digital downloads would NEVER replace the physical format.

I was impressed to see recently released games already available for download on the PSN store. Good for gamers I guess, but this will bring about the death of game stores much quicker than anticipated.

I'm good with digital downloads, but I want to see more Steam like sales on Xbox Live and PSN (looks at full priced 5 year old map packs)

sjaakiejj4181d ago (Edited 4181d ago )

You seem to remember things incorrectly..

http://news.cnet.com/8301-1...

"In late 2007, Sony began releasing select PlayStation 3 titles as direct downloads. It was the first current-generation console to do so. "

As a side note - Digital versions of the game won't replace retail copies for a long time. We don't have enough bandwidth for it to be feasible, nor will we in at least the next 10 years.

NeverEnding19894181d ago

The link you provided supports everything I have said. I didn't say Xbox 360 was first, I said Microsoft placed more of an emphasis on DD earlier on this gen. SONY has only just begun releasing games digitally on the first day as of September of this year, following Nintendo's lead.

http://www.engadget.com/201...

Thanks for the tip tho:)

Knight_Crawler4181d ago

@sjaak - you may now call NeverEnding Father.

ALLWRONG4181d ago

It is true PS3 fanboys talked up Blu-Ray and now they defend digital downloads. They tend to flip flop like that. It's the same when they say "we don't play sales" then send you PM's talking about sales.

sjaakiejj4181d ago

DD's are shitty on consoles in general - PS3 allows the use of third party hard drives but games are like 25GB each. 360 only allows for insanely expensive proprietary drives, though games take up less space.

In either case, you'll be off much cheaper if you just buy games from retailers.

As for your statement about Ps3 fans flip flopping - that's not something exclusive to them. 360 and Nintendo fans do the exact same thing ;). Remember the whole "Ps3 has no games" arguments?

stone_cold4181d ago

simply because Microsoft sucks

dennett3164181d ago

Of course they do....go back to sleep little one, those big bad other consoles won't hurt you any more. Oh! I see you've wet your bed again, naughty boy.
Now go ask Mummy and Daddy to buy you a 360 so you can get some perspective and stop being a silly little fanboy.

shutUpAndTakeMyMoney4181d ago (Edited 4181d ago )

I think they are giving xbox users what they want or ask for. Making multi player free would be a bad move sice this is not what they ask for.

Hey MS is successful so I can't tell them to do anything different. Not many new AAA IP's since gears 1. They won't allow cross play with portal 2 with steamworks. They make gamers pay for some free pc content like on l4d http://www.planetxbox360.co... & minecraft.

Who else can come to e3 and show off dash boards for 10 mins? & skip all the other gaming events? they get a very special love from xbox gamers.

This is the future.
http://latimesblogs.latimes...

But xbox gamer are a weird bunch or they have to many average joe casual gamers. imo.

dennett3164181d ago

If you call releasing games at £59.99 for download "getting it right", then I suppose you could say Sony do.

I wouldn't though, I think that's a colossal rip off by the various publishers. Sony let them set the prices, I think they need to change that policy and make it fall at least in line with physical copies....if not cheaper. Only then will downloading really take off.

As it is, they take advantage of the lazy or those unwilling to shop around for good deals. Fair enough, it can be played on another console via content sharing, but it's still a lot of money for a single game.

sjaakiejj4181d ago

"As it is, they take advantage of the lazy or those unwilling to shop around for good deals. "

Then stop being lazy and search for good deals. I do it with anything I buy. To be fair, those people really aren't Sony's, Microsoft's or Nintendo's problem. In fact, those people earn them extra money - why would they change it?

dennett3164181d ago

It's kind of like taking advantage of a slow kid, it just doesn't seem right. Then again, if people are willing to pay such amounts, I can hardly blame publishers for not changing it. It just seems to me they'd get more sales if the content was much more reasonably priced.

sjaakiejj4181d ago

I agree that they may earn more, but it's a tricky market at the moment due to limited bandwidth. The question is, how many people are willing to buy digital copies of games, and how many are able to?

Given that the market is significantly smaller than that of retail copies, the higher prices may be out of necessity, in an attempt to regain the money they lost in making it digitally available.

All that is speculation of course, there might be entirely different reasons for it

HmongAmerican4181d ago

I know. How can they rip us off when there is no physical disk loyalty fees, but we still pay 60 for a digital copy. Just wait for a price drop seen right to me. It would be cool if PS+ members get a discount with new releases.

Cam9774181d ago

Because they suck and are driven by money. If you disagree with that ten you're blinded by fanboyism.

RivetCityGhoul4181d ago

every company is driven by money dude. your the blinded one.

NeverEnding19894181d ago

Well not SONY, they're blinded by trying to get money again

ALLWRONG4181d ago

I guess Sony does everything out of the kindness of their corporate hearts.

Right?

Cam9774180d ago

• Do Sony have ads on the XMB?
- No.
• Do Sony charge you for PSN?
- No.
• Do Sony change their focus from gaming to a more profitable media-based service?
- No.

Microsoft’s Surface and Xbox hardware revenues take a big hit in Q3

Microsoft just posted the third quarter of its 2024 fiscal financial results. The software maker made $61.9 billion in revenue and a net income of $21.9 billion during Q3. Revenue is up 17 percent, and net income has increased by 20 percent.

Xbox content + services up 62% while hardware down 31%... seems about right with the way they tout you don't need the hardware to play. People can play on their phones or smart tv or other means. I don't hardly play on my consoles directly since getting devices like the logitech g-cloud and ps portal. Which is to also say I have been playing more digital than physical because of these devices.

Sony Patents To Prevent You From In-Game Harassment By Reading Your Emotions

A new patent recently published by Sony wants to gather biometric data of gamers to track whether one is being harassed using AI tools.

Profchaos1d ago (Edited 1d ago )

I hope this is one of those patents that never comes to fruition.

I already dislike the fact you can pay a significant amount for a online service buy associated games and content on said service and get banned from that service over potentially a misunderstanding the bans are already handed out for flimsy reasons

I'd rather see money invested in a ban that simply removes the offensive players ability to communicate with unknown players allow them to continue party chats with friends but not with Joe blow on cod.

exputers20h ago

Agreed. Blizzard recently banned a college Overwatch 2 player who's dependent for saying "shit." Pretty harsh.

Profchaos5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

How rediculas really. You can't say a word that's allowed in most PG films and prime time TV but the game is based around killing the enemy team using guns, explosives etc.

It's just backwards.

just_looken7h ago

What your talking about is called block list

In 2006 a spaceship dropped of the playstation 3/xbox 360 i say that that generation was the last great gen with game functions/tech that has yet to comeback

Anyhow the playstation 3 if you block listed a id they could not talk to you in chatroom with either text or voice. But that was pre mind fucked 2018 when people were more human than sheep.

But hey gta 6 is coming out billion dollar budget without a single player custom character creator and without singeplayer coop off/online something saints row 1-3 had on the xbox 360.

Take my social security and bank account numbers too! Here’s a picture of my wife and our address.

phoenixwing16h ago

Cmon where's the pictures of your children. Don't hold out on them.

H916h ago

At this rate I feel Sony will eventually sell a room to play games in it where they can monitor your every breath

jambola12h ago

I genuinely get a bit worried sometimes when a friend says something that could be offensive In a party
Because I have no trouble believing some bans would happen when in a private party for saying something wrong

SegaSaturn66915h ago

I want them to censor erotic content by measuring my groin temperature so i dont get too distracted while playing black ops 2.

Popsicle15h ago

Terrible idea. Not only do I not consent to providing my biometric data, the potential for mishandling biometric data is almost a certainty. Positive stress and negative stress can produce similar changes in biometrics. Interpreting the precise emotion a person is feeling is not only invasive but could be easily misconstrued. I hope this never comes to fruition.

Microsoft Seemingly Closes Bethesda France

As part of its plans to cut 1,900 jobs, Microsoft has reportedly shut down operations at Bethesda France, letting go roughly 15 people

Microsoft should have left them stay 3rd party

GamerRN1d 5h ago

If they are let go, they can be whatever they want. They ARE 3rd party now... 🤦

Barlos1d 2h ago

Yeah, they're also jobless.

GamerRN19h ago

They can form a company if they want, they are just as jobless as if "Microsoft had left them as 3rd party".

peppeaccardo21h ago

"MIcrosoft leaves Bethesda do what they know how to do best" ... close! Oh the irony ....
(Citation from a week old article)

ChasterMies17h ago

I think Microsoft and other game publishers are letting people go because they think ai will replace them. Doesn’t matter how much profit they make. They were always going to be let go.

PassNextquestion1d 7h ago (Edited 1d 7h ago )

Bethesda France was made up of roughly 15 people... they couldn't of being doing much

Bethesda France mainly did publishing and marketing within the region

blacktiger1d 5h ago

that's a shame for you to say that, i'm sure Elite loves hearing what you just said.

Mr Logic15h ago

What a stupid thing to say. The elites give 0 fucks what we say on an obscure website in the comments section.

Crows9014h ago

You can always reach out and give them jobs at your company man. Don't wait

Profchaos1d 7h ago (Edited 1d 7h ago )

Bethesda France focused on publishing and marketing in the region. And 15 people lost their jobs as part of the closure.

I wonder if this is part of Microsoft's strategy to abandoned physical media or possibly gamepass advertising makes their roles redundant you don't need to market a game as hard when the majority of players get the game as part of a sub which already promoted upcoming games

Tacoboto1d 6h ago

It's France too, there's a high likelihood only 1-2 people on the team even had an Xbox.

Profchaos1d 6h ago

Possibly guven all the leaks we know the Xbox brand is really struggling in the region.

Yi-Long1d 3h ago

Well, if your consoles and games are barely found in any stores any more, of course you're gonna struggle finding consumers ...

XiNatsuDragnel1d 6h ago

Tbh Microsoft I think Bethesda being 3rd party same with Activision would probably more competitive than thus scenario imo

Profchaos1d 4h ago (Edited 1d 4h ago )

I think it would have been better for all parties really especially gamers

TheColbertinator1d 5h ago

The recently purchased Activision French offices might take over all the licensing and marketing for Microsoft in France from now on.
